Hawaii visitors uncertain about going as traveler numbers decline
https://www.sfgate.com/hawaii/article/hawaii-visitor-numbers-declining-19475393.php
Tumblr media
All of Hawaii — including Maui — is open to visitors. Across the state, hotels, restaurants and tours are bidding for guests. A few places have even opened in Lahaina as well, such as the Hawaiian entertainment venue Old Lahaina Luau and restaurant Mala Ocean Tavern.  However, some visitors are still uncertain about traveling to Hawaii at all.
“The feeling of being unwelcome started with the Covid lockdown and the treatment of the tourist then,” Shelley Kresan, a visitor from California, told SFGATE in a Facebook message.

Unwind in Maui, Hawaii: The Perfect Island Getaway
Maui, often referred to as the "Valley Isle," offers the perfect escape for travelers seeking to unwind amidst breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture. Whether you're craving a peaceful retreat or thrilling adventures, Maui has something for everyone. Here's a guide to making the most of your island getaway.
Relax on Maui's Best Beaches
Tumblr media
Maui boasts some of the most stunning beaches in the world, where you can sink your toes into golden sands and let your worries wash away with the tide. Kaanapali Beach, famous for its clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, is ideal for sunbathing and snorkeling. For a more serene experience, visit Wailea Beach, where soft waves and swaying palm trees create the perfect backdrop for a quiet day by the sea.
Discover the Road to Hana
For a scenic adventure, embark on the Road to Hana, a winding coastal drive through lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs. Along the way, you'll encounter stops like Twin Falls for a refreshing swim or the stunning Wai'anapanapa State Park, where black sand beaches meet the deep blue ocean. Be sure to take your time and savor the natural beauty that surrounds you.
Explore Haleakalā National Park
Tumblr media
A visit to Maui isn't complete without experiencing the Haleakalā Crater. Located in Haleakalā National Park, this massive dormant volcano offers breathtaking views, especially at sunrise. The park’s landscape feels otherworldly, and hiking through its volcanic terrain provides a unique way to connect with nature. You can also stargaze at night, as the park is renowned for its clear skies and celestial displays.
Indulge in Local Cuisine
Maui’s culinary scene is a delicious mix of traditional Hawaiian flavors and modern fusion cuisine. Don't miss a chance to indulge in poke, a classic raw fish salad, or sample a plate lunch featuring local specialties like Kalua pork and lomi salmon. For a sweet treat, visit one of Maui’s famous food trucks for shave ice, a refreshing dessert perfect for cooling off after a day in the sun.
Experience Hawaiian Culture
Tumblr media
Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture by attending a traditional luau. These festive events include hula dancing, live music, and a feast of local delicacies. The Old Lahaina Luau is one of the most popular on the island, offering an authentic experience where visitors can learn about the rich history and traditions of Hawaii.
Reconnect with Nature in Iao Valley
For a more tranquil experience, visit Iao Valley State Park, a lush, green paradise surrounded by towering mountains and flowing streams. The iconic Iao Needle, a towering rock formation, is a sight to behold, and the park offers short hikes that allow you to explore the area’s natural beauty. It's a peaceful retreat that feels worlds away from the island’s bustling tourist spots.
Conclusion
Maui, with its diverse landscapes, vibrant culture, and endless opportunities for relaxation, is the perfect island getaway for those seeking to unwind and recharge. Whether you're exploring its scenic routes, lounging on its beaches, or savoring local flavors, Maui offers a serene escape that will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.

Going To Maui
 iHey all!
I’ve never been that into talking about my vacations with peers at school so I thought it would be a good idea to document them :)
This summer has been crazy!
I am 13 years old and have been (like most kids at school) addicted to social media. I see so many cool influencers document their travels and I aspire to be just like them. As my gift this summer before Grade 8 (aka HIGH SCHOOL!) I decided to ask my parents for a trip where I can show off all my travels before high school. Maybe it will help me out with some cool new friends at my new school.
My parents wanted to help me out as my last “childhood vacation” before I become a woman...whatever that means.
So... Maui! Maui was the first stop on this epic vacation! We stayed at this amazing resort named Kaanapali Beach Resort, right in amazing Kaanapali in Lahaina. We got the Ocean Front Family Suite because there was four of us since my dad and mom insisted that we take my dweeb older brother, and also because I wanted the absolute sickest room! It was amazing! We were right on the beach and had multiple rooms. I’ll include some photos :P
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And before anyone asks... yes it was literally as nice as it seems!
My parents and I wanted a hotel where they had multiple activities the guest could do so we would all be happy with whatever activity we wanted to do.
For the ocean activities, my mom and dad really enjoyed the Snorkle Tour because as they said it was “breathtaking”, while I spent most of my time chilling getting a good tan on the semi-private beach areas which included Tommy Bahama beach chairs (fancy I know)!!
Tumblr media
Or surf lessons with the hot surf instructor Daniel. Daniel if you are reading this I haven’t forgotten about you, I’ll come back again I promise!
Tumblr media
Daniel and I are 6 years apart and he and my brother were becoming friends by the end of our 5 day stay... but I know he secretly loved me too.
Me and my brother got into a fight on the third day because he told me I was being “creepy” and he and Daniel could see me in the bushes watching them. He’s such an asshole. He’s just sad because his girlfriend dumped him before the trip. LOSER!
We also went to a luau and spent a lot of time going to cool restaurants and sight seeings! By the last day I was crying like a baby that we had to leave that I actually ended up hiding at a golf course so we wouldn’t need to leave. My dad and mom actually had to get the hotel staff and security to come find me.
But I knew our next stop was going to be killer.
All in all, this trip was so good! It was my first time going to Hawaii and for sure not the last.
Rate 9.5/10
For Daniel <3

Things to do in Lahaina, Maui
Tumblr media
Looking for things to do in Lahaina, Maui? “The west side is the best side”, that’s what we say here in historic Lahaina Town! Shopping, food, activities, the list goes on!
We created a go-to guide so can make your most out of your vacation to Lahaina!
Originally the capital of Hawaii from 1820-1845, historic Lahaina town was once a pit stop for whalers and now sees an estimated 80% of all tourism that comes to Maui! Lahaina’s iconic Front Street runs through the heart of Lahaina Town, connecting Lahaina Harbor, shops, restaurants and historical landmarks. Traveling to Maui is not your bargain vacation due to its desired tropical climate as a U.S. territory, but with AirBnB’s available at all time lows right now and lots of free outdoor activities you’ll find yourself easily content on this little island in the Pacific!
Lahaina is a small town with half the crime rate of Los Angeles and New York. You can walk or bike almost anywhere to shops, beaches, activities and dining, making it a go-to for Maui’s visitors!
Free Things to do in Lahaina
If you’re looking for free things to do in Lahaina, check out the Lahaina Walking Tour for a fun historical walk through along Front Street, which has been rated one of the Top 10 Greatest Streets by the American Planning Commission.
Across from the Wharf Center is the historic Banyan Tree. Planted over 100 years ago this tree is a gathering place for visitors, locals and arts and crafts fairs! If you walk toward the ocean you will find Lahaina Harbor, the busiest tourism harbor in the state!. You can check out the historic museum right under the banyan to learn more about this harbor that was once a pit-stop for whalers and sailors! The historic Pioneer Inn now houses dining and shops, as well as a photo ops with parrots and breakfast at the Inn itself. Art galleries, clothing stores and Hawaii inspired jewelry shops line this quaint little ocean front town!
Surfing is always free, you just need a board and some waves! Lahaina town fronts two popular surf spots, Breakwall and Harbor! Breakwall has a slower softer wave great for longboarding and Harbor’s quick steep drop in waves make it a great pick for shortboarders!
If you’re in Maui during Halloween, be ready for a festive night to remember! Front street hosts a Halloween bash that brings the whole island to it’s little town. Hundreds of amazing costumes, contests, live music and dining! Many restaurants along Front Street offer ocean view and oceanfront dining, here are some of our favorite places to eat in Lahaina!
Dining & Shopping
Starting at the south end of Front Street, you can walk past local shops and good eats. Paia fish market opened their Lahaina location a few years ago and specializes in fish burgers and more! Stop and check out Down the Hatch, one of our favorite places to eat fish, this bar and grill was even on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives! Down the Hatch also has live music at night and game nights! Best burgers in town can be found at Cool Cats Cafe across from the Pioneer Inn and a stop in Captain Jacks Restaurant for salads, fish and philly cheese steaks is a great option! Sunrise cafe is a quaint local breakfast cafe, nestled behind the corner ice cream shop!
At the north end of Front Street, Waikiki Brewing Co. and Tommy Bahamas Bar and Grill are new additions to our Lahaina Town Dining! Further down (maybe a drive more than a walk), behind Safeway shopping center, there is a trio of ocean front dining that are must trys!. Star Noodle, known for it’s asian fusion dishes offers outdoor dining and a contemporary setting! Honu has indoor and oceanfront outdoor dining, seafood dishes, gourmet pizza are their specialities. Mala Ocean Tavern, rated best oceanfront dining in 2019, offers a more elevated dining experience and just recently bought a delicious brunch to the table!
Do you have dietary restrictions and want a dining experience that caters to your needs? Lucky for us, Lahaina is home to a few delicious vegan restaurants! Moku Roots is our top choice, serving amazing vegan dishes made with local ingredients like coconut, kiawe flour, macadamia nuts and tons of fresh fruits and veggies. You won’t even know it’s vegan when you taste it, it’s just good, and grab a dessert on your way out! Choice Health Bar is another great veggie option, their veggie bowls, acai bowls, smoothes, soups and desserts are all made locally and with your health in mind!
Looking for dessert? Banyan Tree gelato and Lamperts Ice Cream (home of the Dole Fruit Whip) are your next stops on front street! Breakwall Shave Ice (located inside Down the Hatch Restaurant) even serves Hawaiian Shaved ice Adult Style (must be 21) and an assortment of other shaved ice desserts, acai bowls, ice coffees and smoothies!
Activities
Whale Watching in Lahaina
Whale watching is the top activity in Lahaina, Maui! Because the Maui Nui Basin is the choice spot for our humpback whale visitors, it became a protected sanctuary for whales in the 1990’s. You can whale watch from shore, your hotel or better yet, on a boat! You can find all styles of vessels to choose from! Large sailing vessels like Trilogy Excursions depart from the loading dock, while smaller rafting style boat like ours leave from Slip 17!
Snorkeling in Lahaina
You can snorkel from shore most anywhere in Lahaina! Mala Boat Ramp is our top spot to snorkel from shore in Lahaina, followed closely by Oluwalu Reef! Mala has an artificial reef made from the old boat harbor that sank into the ocean, creating an underwater home for everything from tropical fish, lots of green sea turtles, octopus and even reef sharks! Olowalu reef is one of Hawaii’s oldest and largest reefs, hosting unique pinnacle style reef structure, lots of marine life and the home to many manta rays! Snorkeling by boat is also a great adventure! Most snorkeling tours that depart from Lahaina Harbor will take you to the island of Lanai where the reef is in pristine condition, and we often see the resident spinner or bottlenose dolphins!
Fishing in Lahaina
If you’re wanting a fishing experience, best to pay for a charter where they can get you on the ones that are biting! Finest Kind and Die Hard are our top fishing company choice for Lahaina!
Luas in Lahaina
Luaus are back in action, with tasty local Hawaiian cuisine and traditional dance! Most luaus are located on a beach front location where you get to enjoy ocean views with a sit-down dinner and Hawaiian style entertainment. If you’re looking for Luaus located in Lahaina Town, Old Lahaina Luau is the go to spot! This luau is located right on front street and has an authentic styled venue with ocean front dining!
Whether you’re staying in Lahaina, or will make the short drive from Kaanapali or the day trip from Kihei or Wailea, it’s definitely worth the stop for some fun shopping, ocean activities and ono food!

Maui Hawaii Recap
Last September Zach and I took a trip to Maui, Hawaii for 8 days and had the BEST time. Plus, we got engaged! I figure it’s about time that I do a round up of what we did, where we stayed, where we went, what we ate, etc!
Transportation:
We opted for a convertible Camero and LOVED it! Everyone said you need a jeep for The Road to Hana, but that’s not the case whatsoever. Maybe the roads used to be bad, but in 2018 they were great!
Lodging:
We went the Air BnB route and stayed in a groud level condo at Kehei Akah. Our room had a washer/dryer, one bedroom, full kitchen, one full bathroom, large living room, patio, and access to a pool. We would 100% stay there again.
Activities:
Surfing (very mild) at Kalama Beach. Zach went across the street to Maui Wave Riders Shop and rented a surfboard and shirt. There was a dog out there surfing named Church and it was the cutest! You can purchase lessons and actually learn with the dog - maybe I’ll do that next time.
Scenic drive to Ahihi-Kinau natural reserve lava fields and saw little wild black goats along the side of the road. Head up, you will not have any service out there.
Yoga with goats. This was one of the coolest things we did and we found it on the Air BnB “Experience” section. It’s literally in the STUNNING backyard of someones house. They were incredibly nice, you get to feed the goats, the goats LOVE to be all over you, you get time at the end for photos, and can rent a mat through them.
Drove to top of Haleakala Crater which was recommended from everyone to do at sunrise. However, you are required to book tickets in advance and they had been sold out for months so we just went in the middle of the day on a whim after Goat Yoga. It was cool, but if you’re short on time I think there are cooler things to do. It’s a little chillier up there so bring a sweatshirt. I definitely got sick on the way back down the mountain because of the twists and turns and perhaps the altitude so heads up.
Road to Hana. This was for sure the best part for us, but we like to explore. It’s an ALL day thing so be prepared. We planned it out the night before and used the GyPSy app (download it before you leave because you won’t have a lot of service) and it was AWESOME! Seriously use it the entire trip, not just Road to Hana. Bring extra shoes with you - I wore flip flops but you’d be more comfortable in sneakers but be ready for them to be wrecked if you like to explore and climb rocks, walk, etc like I do, a bathing suit if you want to swim, towel, sunglasses, camera, snacks, and a car charger for your phone. Here is a detailed itinerary of what we did and where we stopped:
Stopped at Ho’okipa Beach to watch surfing,
Hiked at Waikamoi Nature Trail (muddy and rooty),
Garden of Eden where Zach proposed at the Keopuka Rock Overlook which is a scene from Jurassic Park. We bought presents at their little gift shop and took lots of photos here.
Ke’anae Arboretum where you will see rainbow eucalyptus trees and taro fields.
Ke’anae Peninsula where you’ll see lava rocks, big crashing waves, little fishies in tide pools, old church, and lots of locals camping.
Had passion fruit coconut ice cream (vegan) at Coconut Glen’s (delicious)
Mae ate ahi tacos at “Up in Smoke BBQ” (side of road)
Wai’anapanapa Beach is a must! Black sand beach with a crazy lava rock blowhole and sea arch. Zach saw a weasel (they’re invasive in Hawaii.
Got a Gold Coast pineapple at Ono fruit stand on side of road
Stopped on side of road at Wailua Falls. It’s a very tall waterfall that you can see from the road if you don’t want to stop.
Seven Sacred Pools (has an entry fee, but got in free bc of it being the same park as Haleakala State Park). View is incredible and it looks like you’re in another country! You can’t swim in pools anymore because it’s dangerous and they have lepto bacteria from weasels
Skipped bamboo forest hike bc we were tired.
Turned back towards home and stopped at general store right after Hana. The store was full of random stuff, food, light sockets, etc. no AC.
Drove back with gypsy app and learned about history of Hawaii.
It took us 13 hours from Airbnb to Hana and back, but we spent more than normal at Garden of Eden since we got engaged there!
Scuba Diving with Barry. I HIGHLY recommend this as well, and no experience is needed! It was another thing we found on the Air BnB “Experience” section. You will meet Barry and do a mini learning lesson and quiz on shore. Then you get your gear and he takes you out into the ocean. I freaked out during the small lesson in the ocean and almost quit because it was scary to me at first. He was very encouraging, but firm and explained that you CANNOT just shoot up to the top of the water (like I did) because it’s super dangerous. Once I calmed down, I passed my mini test and was able to go out. If you’ve never done it before it’s kind of insane honestly. Nature is freaking crazy! You’ll get to go down by the reefs (you can’t touch them obviously) and see fish. THANK GOD we didn’t see any sharks or anything. The whole time I was like, “Mae if you see a shark you cannot shoot up to the top!” Scary, but worth it. Truly a badass experience. Barry takes photos of you and you can purchase packages. We bought everything because hello, when will I ever do that again?
Ho’okipa Beach to see the resting sea turtles at sunset. This is a MUST! This happened accidentally - basically Zach and I love to talk to the locals when we travel and ask them what we should do. We don’t overly plan our trips in advance and this was recommended to us by a local. Go right before the sun goes down. Park in the parking lot and walk down to the very narrow beach. You will see people surfing and to the right is a small rock wall. You probably won’t notice them at first, but there are giant turtle coming ashore slowly. Do NOT cross that rock wall and do NOT ever, ever touch a sea turtle! Admire with your eyes and enjoy them from a far. You also have to be quiet while you’re there not to disturb the turtles so if you have a screaming child with you, this might not be for you. This is not a “tourist attraction” so only go if you’re going to be respectful.
Kehei Market Place. Just a small shop area run by locals where you can buy souvenirs.
Old Lahaina Luau. This is a MUST! It’s seriously so well organized, you’re greeted with a drink and lei, you walk around listening to amazing live music while stopping at various stations set up to learn about history like learning to throw a net like they did back in the day, learning a dance, get your photo taken at sunset, and more. You will need to book this in advance. I booked it about a month in advance and got sets on the ground closest to the stage which was awesome! The food is buffet style but so incredible and Zach (who is vegan) could actually eat there which was surprising. Everyone is so nice, the drinks are included, and the show is AMAZING. 10/10 you have to go.
Go out one night and admire the stars. We pulled over on the way back from the Luau because it was crazy how many stars you can see!
Molokini snorkel and sea turtle trip. We booked this on a whim through Boss Frogs shop. You will have to wake up early and be on a boat with other people and hope the wind isn’t too bad. We ended up ok because of how early we went out, but did have to leave Molokini because of the wind, but we had already had plenty of time there so we lucked out. You will snorkel there which is awesome and you’ll see a lot of fish, eel, corals, etc! Then they drove us to “Turtle Town” and we got to snorkel again, but this time with sea turtle! Again, don’t touch them and stay out of their way. They are such beautiful creatures! If you get boat sick, I wouldn’t recommend this.
Food:
So look, Zach is vegan so this might not be the best place to read food recommendations as we were limited to only going places that also had something for him.
Maui Tacos
Starbucks
Papaya Sorbet
Joys Place
Nalu’s South Shore Grill
Grandma’s Coffee
Jersey Mikes (look, basic I know but when you’re starving and vegan you do it)
Coconut Glen’s (on Road to Hana)
Up in Smoke BBQ (not vegan on Road to Hana)
Ono Fruit Stand for Gold Coast Pineapple (on Road to Hana)
Veg-out Food truck
Da Nani Pirates Food Truck
Threes Bar and Grill
Beach Street for breakfast (once we found this place we stopped going to Starbucks)
Hawaiian Moons Natural Food (kind of like a tiny Whole Foods)
Old Lahaina Luau (dinner and a show - A MUST)
Mendo Food Truck

10 Awesome Things to See and Do in Maui, Hawaii
Tumblr media
Ever think about taking a trip to paradise? Maui’s got you covered. Being Hawaii’s second largest island, it has no shortage of interesting and exciting things to do.
Itching to see some truly wonderful natural wonders? Maui’s got it. Have a hankering to try water sports or just relax on some remote beach? You can find them there. Good food? Nice hotels? Beautiful hula-clad girls? Yes, yes and yes.
1. The Old Lahaina Luau
Some things are just unavoidably interwoven with a particular place’s identity. In Maui’s cause, perhaps this is never more apparent than with The Old Lahaina Luau, one of the biggest and most popular venues to view the traditional Hawaiian hula dance, fire-eating shows and sampling some delicious native dishes.
2. Haleakala National Park
Home to the world’s largest dormant volcano, millions of visitors come by to see this majestic sleeping giant. Sitting 10,000 feet above sea level, it is a place where you can wonder about the powers and dangers of Mother Earth—without getting too close to red-hot lava, ala Mt. Kilauea.
Seeing the majestic sunrise from the top of Haleakala (pronounced “hah-lay-ah-kah-lah”) is one of the most favourite things to do here, but that also means dragging yourself out of bed at three in the morning, making a two and a half hour drive up to the summit, and bundling up in every piece of clothing you’ve brought, because although it could be one of the most beautiful sights you would see in your lifetime, the temperature there is frigid and the winds are relentless.
3. Snorkelling and Other Ocean Activities
I don’t think anyone’s ever managed to disassociate Hawaii with the ocean, and there is certainly a surfeit of potential places and tours in Maui.
There are also packages available for snorkeling, surfing, whale watching, cruises, kayaking, outrigger canoeing, scuba diving, fishing, surfing, parasailing, kite-boarding, stand up paddling, windsurfing, and jet skiing. You can experience all those thrills in this island.
The white-sand beaches found all around Maui also offer a truly spectacular opportunity to see the secrets of the depths, from vibrantly-colored fish to ghostly shipwrecks such as the wreck of the Carthaginian. Watch out for sharks, though!
On the flip side, if being in the ocean scares you, there are other ways to appreciate it without actually jumping in it. The Ocean Center in Maui is a conservatory and aquarium all in one, home to a fantastic, teeming variety of fish and other marine life for the curious.
4. Helicopter Tours
If you’re the kind of adventurer going for something different, consider going on a helicopter ride and afford yourself some breathtaking views of not just Maui, but of all Hawaii’s islands. Take a ride to the skies and experience the majestic islands in all their glory.
5. Take the Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is also another favourite tourist activity in Maui. The journey through this winding and steep road begins at Maui’s northern shore and proceeds along the coastline to the small East Maui town, Hana, a peaceful community bordered by abundant green pastures decorated with white-coloured cattle.
Hana is a beautiful destination, but the road to get to it is also a destination. You would not want to rush this road trip and you would definitely make more than a handful of stops to enjoy and take Instagram-worthy pictures of lush greeneries, remarkable waterfalls, and breathe in the fragrant smell of guavas and ginger that grow along the roadside.
6. Play Golf!
Yes, this small Hawaiian island also boasts of impressive golf courses open to the public. Maui offers a great variety of golf experiences for both novice or amateur and professional players. So whether you just play to relax, or you’re a pro-golfer, you will definitely find Maui’s golf courses remarkable and the view spectacular and breathtaking.
7. Take a Bite of Maui’s Gastronomic Paradise
Who doesn’t like to eat? Everybody loves grub and if you are in Maui, you will have even more reasons to love food! Dining is one of the top things to do here and the experience is one for the books. Though the area is just small, Maui unbelievably offers a vast array of dining choices from affordable mom-and-pop cafes to posh and luxurious celebrity-chef owned restaurants.
The locals would advise you to taste a bit of everything in Maui: Hawaiian-style fast food, fine-dining restaurants, local favourites like Spam musubi, or ethnic foods like Portuguese malasadas that represents the island’s culinary identity.
8. Immerse Yourself in Maui’s Rich Culture
Hawaii’s rich and colourful culture is absolutely unique; and there’s nowhere in the world like it. There’s the famous Hula dance and a lot of festivals, art galleries, museums, and special shows that immerse you in the beautiful Hawaiian culture.
Music is also an immense part of Maui’s cultural heritage. You will hear their music everywhere—in your hotel, in the beaches, parks, and even shopping centers.
9. Shop til’ You Drop
Because the island of Maui offers a vast pool of choices to shop in—from large shopping malls with high-end designer brands to tiny hole-in-the-wall boutiques, chances are you are going to end up buying something during your stay. Maui’s largest Swap Meet happens every Saturday from 7am to 1pm at the UH Maui College campus in Kahului. Here, you will meet both visitors and locals roving through the rows of booths. Arts and crafts, clothing, jewelery, souvenirs, flowers, produce, and everything you could think of from some couple of hundreds of vendors.
10. Sightsee
Aside from Road to Hana and Haleakala, Iao Valley is also a notable natural park for photography and hiking. Upcountry Maui (on the slopes of Haleakala) has quaint little towns, wide grazing grounds, and a picturesque landscape. Other towns like Wailuku, Makawao, Paia, and Lahaina, offer local food and are perfect for day or afternoon strolling.
