Classics are such a contentious idea! While for some of us there's just no question that certain books belong in the canon of classic literature, others may look at the same books belovedof so many and cringe in distaste. To me, "Goodnight Moon" (1947) by Margaret Wise Brown, with its bright yellow, orange-red, green, and blue pictures by Clement Hurd, and its gently rhyming, repetitive bedtime refrain wishing goodnight to everything in the anthropomorphic bunny-child's room, was always the epitome of quiet bedtime relaxation. So I was a bit taken aback to discover how loathed this book is by many adults (though interestingly, I still haven't met many young children who don't like it, which is probably telling in itself). Is it the book itself, or that schism that occurs between childhood and adulthood that changes our perceptions? When I took out "Eloise" (1955) - originally titled "Eloise: A Book For Precocious Grown-ups" - from the library, I was excited to refresh my memory of this beloved classic by Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight and share it with all of you. After all, we all know how much I love a subversive picture book, and mischievous protagonist. Instead, much to my chagrin, it just seemed ... obnoxious.
