@stthomaspubliclibrary For this #worldwaterday take a deep dive into the lives of trees with this book review from @neilhubert137. Without water, there would be no trees to sustain us!⁣ ⁣ ⁣ What a concept … having a meeting with a tree. And with Thomas Pakenham, historian and arborist, as our guide you can imagine it will be an insightful journey. ⁣ The trees in his books are mythical, sacred, beautiful and scarred. Witnesses to history.⁣ An elephant or a macaw might live 80 years, turtles 100 and some whales and sharks up to 200. We are among living trees dating hundreds of years old, possibly 500 years plus.⁣ ⁣ The trees in my neighbourhood growing up seemed ancient when I passed through them daily on my way to and from school. I felt somewhat protected by them and watched as they weathered terrific storms and swayed gently in the summer. As a solitary child, these trees heard all my angst and hopes.⁣ ⁣ Their deep roots keep them grounded and nourished, allowing the upper branches to bend in the wind and to reach for the light and I think I decided early-on to live my life as a tree would. I return to them now to share my gratitude.⁣ ⁣ If I had a bucket list, I would schedule a chat with each of the wonders featured in this book, hoping to make friends with each of them.⁣ ⁣ -Neil⁣ ⁣ #worldwaterday #oldestlivingtrees #thomaspakenham #earthslungs #sttont #stthomaspubliclibrary #ldnont #stpl #stthomasproud #librariesofinstagram #books #instabooks #bookish #bookblogger #bookstagramfeatures #reading #bookstagram #bookaddict #bibliophile #ya #amreading #explorerailwaycity (at St. Thomas Public Library) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvWX8E2nl5x/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xubzautmg7jz

#ArborDay is celebrated all over the globe. In America it is most often celebrated on the last Friday of April, but the date around the world varies. The earliest recorded Arbor Day was in 1594 in the Spanish village of Mondoñedo.
The #LastUniversalCommonAncestor between a human and a tree lived over 3.5 billion years ago. Forests began to develop 350 million years ago. Humans only began to evolve 4 million years ago. Trees have been here 87.5 times longer than humans.
The #OldestLivingTree to date is a 16-foot spruce in Sweden that is 9,500 years-old. It is a clonal tree that regenerates itself every 600 years. The oldest single tree is a 5,062 year-old bristlecone pine that lives in the Great Basin in California's White Mountains. In 2012 a 26-year-old woman set fire to the #Senator, a 3,500-year-old cypress tree in Orlando, Florida.
The Earth loses 18.7 million acres of forests per year.
Do the math. Plant trees.
