WILLIAM & KATE FAMILY FUN FACTS
7th Earl Spencer & Olive Middleton
Albert Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer a.k.a. the grandfather of Diana (therefore great-grandfather of William) is school friends with Olive Middleton’s (née Lupton, Kate’s great-grandmother) brother, Lionel Lupton. The men studied the same subject together at Trinity College.
Albert Spencer & Lionel Lupton signed up *together* to fight in World War I. Who would’ve though that generations later, Albert’s great-grandson would marry the great-grandniece (is that a word lol) of his friend, and fellow comrade, Lionel.
Reading about the Middleton family had me go down a rabbit hole, and there’s another fun fact about the Middletons & Prince Phillip!
Peter Middleton & Prince Phillip
Olive Middleton’s youngest son, Peter Middleton, is the paternal grandfather of Kate.
Peter Middleton was Prince Phillip’s co-pilot on a two month tour of South America tour in 1962 (see 3rd picture). Peter apparently received a thank you letter and a pair of gold cufflinks from Phillip after their trip.
Again, we see this connection between Kate and William before they even knew each other (no matter how distant this reach is lol). Who would’ve thought that Prince Phillip’s grandson would marry his former co-pilot’s granddaughter one day.
Now I’m really curious if Peter Middleton & Prince Phillip ever met each other towards the end of William & Kate’s courtship. Peter died in 2010, at the age of 90, and while he couldn’t attend the wedding, I wonder if he and Phillip ever spoke to each other about the old times.
Also, there’s the pilot connection between Peter Middleton, Prince Phillip, and Prince William. I wonder if the golden cufflinks were passed down to Michael but I doubt it as Kate’s father, Michael, has 3 brothers and he’s only the second eldest. But wouldn’t it be cool if, let’s say, George joins the RAF and wears the cufflinks gifted by one of his great-grandfather to his other great-grandfather? It completes the whole circle.
I also wonder if Kate & Phillip ever spoke about their family ties. But after reading about the Lupton & Middleton family, Kate’s family had more aristocratic ties than I thought. Her family has been wealthy for generations and no doubt are the Middletons doing a good job with Party Pieces.
This is all so interesting to me and I love this connection between William & Kate before they even met! Even though it seems like all aristocrats or upper class people had royal connections at some point, this doesn’t change the fact that it reinforces my belief that they were meant to be 🧡

THE DUCHESS DIARIES
Just a few days ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice Day, the Duchess of Cambridge paid a surprise visit to the Imperial War Museum.
The Duchess learned about the digital memorial for all those who served during the First World War titled 'Lives of World War I'. The incredible undertaking aims at creating 'a life story every man and woman who made a contribution during the First World War'
She spoke with the museum's curators and historians and also saw some of the museum's First World War Galleries. The Duchess was also able to see the original documents related to her great-uncles Lionel, Maurice and Francis Lupton all of whom were killed in action during the first World War. She also saw their photographs for the very first time.
She also looked at documents relating to her great-grandmother Olive Christiana Middleton née Lupton who along with her sister Anne worked as a VAD nurse during the war.

4) The Quantified Self
Tumblr media
After further discussions with Gareth and Oliver, I have decided to carry on with my research and focus on the Quantified Self movement, which practices self-tracking, a type of self-surveillance that consists on the collection of personal data for in-depth analysis and patterns recognition.
Self-tracking has a long history. It has first been introduced as a method of self-experimentation by the psychologist Allen Neuringer in 1981, who believed that psychologists could use the scientific method to their own bodies and discover better solutions to their problems, instead of observing. It has been done, for example, by Sanctorius of Padua in the 16th century, who has weighted himself, his meals and his excrements, studying the energy of an organism.
But self-tracking is a big and important topic now. In fact, in 2007, two journalists of the Wired magazine, Gary Wolf and Kevin Kelly, have founded the Quantified Self movement in San Francisco, promoting the use of sensors and new technologies to collect aspects of everyday life and improve. In fact, the motto of the movement is “self-knowledge through numbers”, where data become useful piece of information to optimise life.
Deborah Lupton, is a sociologist and one of the main researchers on this topic. As Lupton says, the idea behind the QS is that “the more we know about ourselves and our bodies, the more productive, wealthier, wiser, healthier, emotionally stable and so on we can be”. Here, wearable devices are designed to quantify everyday exercise and rest, mood and diet, and then provide feedback to users such that they can better understand and possibly modify their activities and behaviour.
Moreover, self-tracking is applied in different areas. It can be applied to track food consumption, fitness, sleep patterns, sexual activity, finance, and many more.
Lupton has identified the self-tracking practice as a subculture as it is a way of living through data. She has identified 4 typologies: private where one person looks at personal aspects for self-awareness and self design. Pushed, motivated by particular others. Communal, sharing data among individuals through media platforms. Exploited, where individuals use personal data as a benefit of others.
Finally, to understand the motivations that drive users to self-track, Henner Gimpel has identified 5 principal reasons:
self-healing = becoming healthier
self-discipline = rewarding aspects of it
self-design = control and optimize “yourself”
self-association = associated with movement
self-entertainment = entertainment value
Tumblr media
The Quantified Self is an active movement that has its own forum and website QuantifiedSelf.com . Also, they monthly create and attend meet-ups around different important cities, where they share experiences, suggestions, improvements and technologies used. In the Quantified Self website, there is plenty of material to develop ethnographic research of this user group.
After watching many videos and analyse them, I got quite interested in two particular cases.
One is Chris Angel, who has had a talk in 2015 in one of the Quantified Self London meet-ups. He says that using tracking devices has completely changed him and helped him losing weight and being constantly active, because finally he found something that was tailoring something to him, pointing out what is specifically good for him.Chris says that the need to collect is what made him want to exercise, to get better and fitter, and it was all down to the gamification of these devices. To the point he said that the game is the objective, fitness is a side effect.
Another example, is Alexandra Carmichael, author of the book “Getting a hold on your mood: a Quantified Self approach”. Alexandra, who battled depression for years, has started recording her mood 8 times a day since 2009. She started noticing and accepting patterns, but most importantly, welcoming her emotions. By constantly inserting her data and looking at her infographics, she says that self-tracking helped her to take control of her life and make informed treatment decisions, that doctors have not been able to help with during a decade of chronic pain.

Italian shares jump on new coalition talks - markets latest news
Second Chinese suitor emerges as frontrunner to buy 'Boris bus' maker Wrightbus FTSE 100 and Europe's main share indices gain ground after yesterday's losses Boris Johnson should remind Merkel of these four hard economic facts when they meet Jeremy Warner: Global leaders are too divided to counter looming economic darkness 10:21AM Transatlantic mergers slump British defence company Cobham is currently the subject of a £4bn takeover bid from US private equity group Advent. Our mergers and acquisitions reporter, Vinjeru Mkandawire, has been taking a look at the latest figures: The number of transatlantic mergers and acquisitions (M&A;) between the US and UK fell by nearly a quarter in the first half of this year, according to research by Deloitte. This was on the back of an 18pc decline in global dealmaking, which was partly driven by increasing uncertainty around trade tariffs and the global economy, the firm said. Transactions between the US and the UK were down 20pc compared to 2018 but still exceeded the combined number of deals between the US and Germany, France and Spain.   Deloitte’s Paul Lupton said that despite the fall in transatlantic deal volumes across many of the major European markets, there was still “strong appetite” for technology assets, which accounted for 28pc of all US-UK deals in the first half of the year.  “This is attributable to the asset‑light business models which enable greater potential for geographical expansion and scalability,” he said. 10:12AM Goldman Sachs predicting a 'very volatile' three months for Italian economy Credit: ALBERTO PIZZOLI/AFP Economists at Goldman Sachs are predicting a bumpy few months for Italy's economy.  "In our view, the next three months will be very volatile and challenging for the Italian economy and its assets." They are also predicting a delay to the preparation of next year's budget if a new coalition cannot be formed and fresh elections have to be called.  9:59AM What next for Italy? The political upheaval in Rome has come at an awkward time for the country, as Berenberg's European economist Florian Hense has observed:  "With the submission of the 2020 budget to the Italian parliament and European Commission looming by 30 September and 15 October, respectively, the timing is unfortunate: Italy needs to find more than €20bn (£18.3bn) in savings to avoid the already legislated rise in the VAT by 3 percentage points in 2020." Berenberg has set out the three most likely scenarios for Italy:   1. Italy avoids snap elections for at least nine months: Five Star join forces with the Democratic Party (PD) for a new centre-left government, probably with Giuseppe Conte returning as prime minister. Markets could rally if the short-term uncertainty of snap elections is averted. The centre-left coalition could then focus on agreeing a budget and compromises with the EU over its deficit.  2. No poll for now but elections in early 2020: President Sergio Mattarella appoints a technocratic government to draw up the 2020 budget, with snap elections to follow early next year. Five Star and the PD could support the move as it would shield them from having to announce painful adjustments to the 2020 budget themselves. This option could avoid a volatile reaction from markets.  3. Snap elections later this year: The final option is for Mattarella to call snap elections for late October or early November. Current opinion polls suggest far right Matteo Salvini would likely win and become prime minister. A Salvini government could set Italy on a collision course with the EU over its budget. Bond yields could surge, driving up Italy's cost of borrowing.  9:36AM Italy seeks a new coalition in a bid to avoid fresh elections Italian president Sergio Mattarella (left) will try to find a viable coalition government after Giuseppe Conte (right) resigned as prime minister yesterday Credit: FILIPPO ATTILI HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/REX Italian president Sergio Mattarella will begin intensive talks with the country's political leaders today as he seeks to determine whether a new ruling coalition can be found after prime minister Giuseppe Conte resigned yesterday.  If a coalition cannot be found, Matarella will be forced to call fresh elections.  Conte resigned just over a year after agreeing to lead a populist alliance of the League party, led by Matteo Salvini, and the Five Star Movement. Mattarella, whose role as president is normally a largely ceremonial one, has the sole power to appoint governments and call elections. He is ready to give Five Star and the opposition Democratic Party, or PD, time to strike a deal. But he will allow them days, not weeks, to reach an agreement, Italian media reported.  The talks are set to begin this afternoon.  Rome's FTSE MiB index fell 1pc yesterday but has risen a healthy 1.46pc so far today.  8:59AM Fiat-Renault merger hopes buoy markets Credit: Eric Gaillard/REUTERS A report in Italy about continuing merger talks between Fiat Chrysler and Renault has helped to push shares in the car industry higher. The pair abandoned talks on a mega merger in June after meeting resistance from the French government, which is a major shareholder in Renault.  Take a look at the long road that led to Fiat Chrysler to propose a tie-up with the French manufacturer:  Timeline - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles For more on why we're seeing a wave of deals in the car industry, take a look at Alan Tovey's long read from the weekend: Automotive industry alliances: who's joining forces with who and why? 8:50AM A strong start for European shares European stock markets have enjoyed a strong start to the day, with all of the major indices gaining ground. Here’s how the continent’s blue-chip bourses stood as of about 15 minutes ago: The FTSE 100 was 0.5pc up France’s CAC 40 was 0.75pc up Germany’s DAX was 0.5pc up Spain’s IBEX was 0.75pc up Italy’s FTSE MiB was 1.19pc up Remember you can use our handy Markets Hub tool at the top of the blog to keep tabs on the latest stock market and currency movements! 8:34AM Ryanair - what's happening today? There's a lot to keep track of in this Ryanair story so this might help:  When are the strikes? Pilots in the UK and Ireland are planning separate 48 hour stoppages starting from midnight tonight in disputes over pay and conditions.  What's happening in the London courts? An application by the airline for an injunction to block UK pilots striking is to be heard by a judge in London on Wednesday.  What's happening in the Irish courts? The Irish High Court will rule on whether to grant the airline an injunction to block the planned strike by 180 pilots based in Ireland.  Anything else? Quite a bit, actually. The airline is also facing a wave of strikes over the next month by staff across its Spanish and Portuguese bases. The first Portuguese strike action is set to begin today. Belgian unions have told members not to comply with the carrier's request for them to staff flights that have been hit by the Portuguese industrial action.  And the share price? It's dropped 17pc in the past month.  Markets Hub - Ryanair Holdings 8:21AM Ryanair could attempt to break strikes Ryanair has been drawing up plans to keep as many services as possible in operation if it fails in its legal action. Just in from our transport correspondent Oliver Gill: One senior insider has told me @Ryanair has contingency plans in place to run all, or nearly all, UK flights even if the legal action fails and strikes go ahead. This will be announced after the High Court decision this morning.— Oliver Gill (@ojngill) August 21, 2019 8:15AM Ryanair's last ditch bid to avoid strike chaos Parked Ryanair planes will be a common sight in the next couple of days if strike action proceeds.  Credit: ALBERTO PIZZOL/AFP Ryanair should learn this morning whether its request to block 180 of its Irish pilots from striking tomorrow and Friday has been successful. The Irish High Court is due to issue its decision on whether the 48 hour stoppage can proceed.  Ryanair claims that the strike action breaches an agreement it reached with the union last year. The budget airline also claims that  the union has failed to submit detailed proposals ahead of balloting its members or issuing its strike notice and that the industrial action is timed to cause maximum disruption by coinciding with a scheduled strike by UK pilots.  We'll keep you up to date on developments throughout the day.  7:59AM Facebook moves to address privacy concerns Credit: Dado Ruvic/REUTERS Facebook is launching a long-promised tool that lets users limit what information the social network can gather about them on external websites and apps. The move is an attempt by tech firm to head off criticism of its privacy practices which have been heavily scrutinised in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.  Facebook said it is adding a section where users can see the activity it tracks outside its service, including through its "like" buttons. Users will be able to turn off the tracking.  The feature has been launched in South Korea, Ireland and Spain and is due to be rolled out in other markets in the "coming months".  7:37AM Ryanair in bid to stop pilot strikes Ryanair is going to the High Court today in an attempt to block Thursday's strike action. An application by Ryanair for an injunction is to be heard by a judge in London on Wednesday. In Ireland, Ryanair has also sought an order at the High Court in Dublin to prevent around 180 pilots based in Ireland from going on a 48-hour strike from midnight on Thursday. The application was contested by Forsa, the parent union of the Irish Airline Pilots Association. A judge is expected to give a ruling on Wednesday morning. 7:22AM Boris heads to Boris, while crisis reigns in Italy Good morning. Equities across Europe were lower yesterday amid political uncertainty, not least in Italy where prime minister Giuseppe Conte said he would resign. The pound went in the opposite direction after comments from Angela Merkel that Europe would think about practical solutions to the current Brexit impasse were interpreted as a chink of light in the stand-off between Downing Street and Brussels. Today the German Chancellor will be meeting with Boris Johnson in Berlin.  5 things to start your day 1) Second Chinese suitor emerges as frontrunner to buy 'Boris bus' maker Wrightbus: One of China’s biggest engineering companies has emerged as the frontrunner in the race to save “Boris Bus” maker Wrightbus. Weichai, part of giant state-owned conglomerate Shandong Heavy Industry, is in detailed discussions to buy the struggling bus company, The Daily Telegraph has learnt. 2) Shareholder revolts at annual meetings have “little impact” on restraining runaway pay across FTSE 100 companies, despite a fall in the average salary paid to chief executives last year, according to the CIPD and the High Pay Centre. Between 2014 and 2018 shareholders approved all FTSE 100 company pay policies presented at an AGM, with most votes sailing through, a report by the association for human resource professionals and the think tank found. 2018 income figures for the CEOs of the FTSE 100   3) Yellowhammer port chaos is not even Project Fear: it is slapstick, writes Ambrose Evans-Pritchard. The Yellowhammer report excited my interest because it makes extraordinary warnings about ports in a no-deal Brexit, and I happen to have been talking to port officials over the past two weeks. These included the Boulogne-Calais chief and the head of the UK’s biggest port complex on the Humber. My conclusion is that the Yellowhammer section on ports cannot be true. 4) Britain is a touch richer than previously realised after new sums by the Office for National Statistics added an extra £26bn to annual GDP. The Government and charities replace buildings, machinery and other capital more frequently than expected, businesses develop more software in-house than was known, and services exports are larger than had been appreciated. 5) Lucy Burton finds out who the Hong Kong 'Superman' that's taking on British beer is: Hong Kong's richest man Li-Ka Shing. The 91-year-old was determined to change his circumstances from a young age, telling Forbes in 2010 that the "burden of poverty and this bitter taste of helplessness and isolation" that he felt as a child drove him on in adult life. He is the 28th richest person in the world with a net worth of around $32bn.   What happened overnight Asian shares flatlined on Wednesday as investors took a step back after recent gains, with focus now turning to a key speech by Federal Reserve boss Jerome Powell at the end of the week. Rising hopes for China-US trade talks have provided a much-needed lift to markets over the previous two days but with few fresh catalysts, dealers are keeping their powder dry ahead of Friday's address. After positive signals from Donald Trump and some of his top advisers on Monday over progress in the talks with Beijing, and an olive branch with the delay of a ban on Huawei purchases, there have been few developments for traders to buy on. "Our trade-war headline-inspired relief rally appears to have run its course as I suspect there is still a lot of nervousness among US investors as the global economic realities are just too hard to ignore," said Stephen Innes at Valour Markets. With so much riding on the Fed, investors were understandably anxious. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dithered either side of flat after three straight days of gains. Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.3%, while Shanghai blue chips added a slim 0.06%. Hong Kong stocks went into the break slightly higher after swinging throughout the morning. The Hang Seng Index added 0.11 percent, or 28.98 points, to 26,260.52. This summer’s most inspiring design books
Summer is a time for creative renewal, and for many of us, that means new books. 2018’s most exciting new design books have something for everyone, whether you just want to peruse coffee table eye candy or you finally have time to pore over the essays you didn’t have a chance to read during the winter. We’ve compiled some of the most compelling new and forthcoming releases, from significant design research to pure, unadulterated fun. Find the first 10 titles below, and stay tuned for part two.
Architects’ Houses
By Michael Webb
[Cover Image: Princeton Architectural Press]
What happens when an architect becomes his or her own client? That’s the premise of the projects in Architects’ Houses, which looks at the stories behind homes designed by architects for themselves. Take the husband and wife team, Antón Gargía-Abril and Débora Mesa, whose studio spent more than a year on structural calculations for their remarkable balancing act of a home. When the architect is in the driver’s seat, the typical process–and timeline–for finishing a house can easily go out the window. Often, that’s what makes these buildings so worthy of our attention.

California Captured
By Marvin Rand, Emily Bills, Sam Lubell, and Pierluigi Serraino
[Cover Image: Phaidon]
Marvin Rand is the most famous architectural photographer you’ve never heard of. Like his better-known peer Julius Shulman, Rand chronicled the aspirational architecture of mid-20th century California, but his work remained largely unknown until 2012, when journalist Sam Lubell discovered an archive of more than 50,000 of the photographer’s negatives and transparencies. California Captured (Phaidon) showcases nearly 250 of these images. Sleek, single-family homes by architects such as Richard Neutra, Craig Ellwood, and John Lautner figure prominently, in addition to Googie landmarks like the Theme Building at LAX and Tiny Naylor’s drive-through–all rendered in Rand’s crisp, unfussy style.

California Crazy: American Pop Architecture
By Jim Heimann
[Cover Image: Taschen]
Almost 40 years ago, Jim Heimann published a book called California Crazy. It brought the state’s folly-filled pop architecture to the mainstream, documenting its theme parks, fast-food stands, and roadside buildings. In June, the book is being republished anew. It still features page after page of rich, archival photos of countless SoCal typologies–from buildings shaped like pumpkins, cameras, and ice cream cones, to studio sets and faux castles. But Heimann also reflects on what makes California such fertile ground for architectural experimentation and the “dicey business” of preservation, including how the first edition inspired new research into many of these formerly obscure structures (some of which no longer exist). Here’s hoping that the 40-year-update will become a regular thing.

Coffee Lids: Peel, Pinch, Pucker, Puncture
By Louise Harpman and Scott Specht
[Cover Image: Princeton Architectural Press]
Did you know the Smithsonian has more than 50 coffee cup lids in its permanent collection? Thanks to the work of architects Louise Harpman and Scott Specht, who have been collecting lids for years, this form of “invisible” design will be preserved forever. The duo’s new book about the typology, titled simply Coffee Lids, is a glimpse into the depthless variation and ingenuity of an object that few people have ever even considered. “Looking something as simple as a humble coffee lid is an entry into that conversation,” Harpman told Co.Design‘s Katharine Schwab, “to slow down, take notice, wonder, ask questions–what is that, how is it made, who designed it?”

How To Make Repeat Patterns: A Guide for Designers, Architects and Artists
By Paul Jackson
[Cover Image: Laurence King Publishing]
Channel your inner M.C. Escher with How To Make Repeat Patterns (Laurence King). The guide, by paper artist Paul Jackson, reveals the rules of symmetry that undergird complex patterns and offers tips for producing your own designs, whether for wallpaper, architectural facades, or digital products.

Inside North Korea
By Oliver Wainwright
[Cover Image: Taschen]
The humans in Oliver Wainwright’s photos of North Korean buildings look like scale models: Tiny figures, invariably dressed in drab tones, that serve only to underline the yawning size and shimmering jewel-tones of Pyongyang’s architecture. “It looks as if someone has emptied a packet of candy across the city, sugary pastilles jumbled up with jelly spaceships,” writes Wainwright, the Guardian architecture critic who visited the country on a tour in 2015, when he shot the photos in this Taschen tome that will be released in August. Unlike most accounts of the city, Inside North Korea (Taschen) offers a thoughtful analysis of Pyongyang’s urban history, situating its widely photographed architecture in context with the Kim dynasty and the way it seeks to articulate its goals through building. It’s sobering, and mesmerizing, at the same time.

Lorna Simpson Collages
By Lorna Simpson
[Cover Image: Chronicle Books]
The collages in this monograph are a revelation. Artist Lorna Simpson takes models from vintage Ebony and Jet ads and gives them elaborate new hairstyles, using ink washes, geological formations, and other mysterious imagery. The book features 160 artworks that, together, form a meditation on the language of hair and black identity. As poet Elizabeth Alexander writes in the introduction: “The repetitions in these images suggest that we are thought of by some as a dime a dozen: undervalued, yes, but also, abundant. Black women are everywhere glorious and unsung.”

Shakespeare Dwelling: Designs for the Theater of Life
By Julia Reinhard Lupton
[Cover Image: University of Chicago Press]
This inventive book by an English and comparative literature professor at UC Irvine examines the spaces that bring Shakespeare’s tales to life. Author Julia Reinhard Lupton analyzes dwellings in five classic works–Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Pericles, Cymbeline, and The Winter’s Tale–and draws on theory from the likes of Martin Heidegger and Don Norman to offer insight into everything from “the ethics of habitation and hospitality” to “the literary dimensions of design.”

Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts
By Patrick Syme and Abraham Gottlob Werner
[Cover Image: Smithsonian Books]
Skimmed-milk white. Arterial blood red. Celandine green. In the 19th century, naturalists were struggling to standardize the colors they observed in nature–without the utility of post-Industrial Revolution digital precision of CMYK or RGB. Werner’s Nomenclature Of Colours, published in 1814, gave scientists, artists, and naturalists a common language to talk about color–even Darwin famously used the color dictionary on his travels. This spring, the Smithsonian re-released the book in a small, pocket-sized version, perfect for travelers or anyone who spends time outdoors. It’s an evocative creative document–and a lovely antidote to life lived online.

Women Design
By Libby Sellers
[Cover Image: Frances Lincoln]
Women Design (Frances Lincoln) assumes the Herculean task of highlighting women’s contributions to design–including architecture, industrial design, digital design, and graphics–from the 20th century to the present day. It has no business being just 176 pages, but author Libby Sellers, a prominent British gallerist and curator, manages to pack a wealth of information in profiles of 21 women designers. Historic pioneers such as Denise Scott Brown, Ray Eames, and Lella Vignelli get their due, as well as contemporary stars like Neri Oxman, Patricia Urquiola, and Kazuyo Sejima. “Women have always been, and remain, a significant part of the design profession,” Sellers writes. “…Yet, if asked to name the design world’s greats, most people would produce a list of predominantly male names.” This book attempts to correct the narrative, and it tells some rollicking stories along the way. Be sure to check out the section on the “Damsels of Design,” a group of women industrial designers GM hired to address what a 1957 press release described as “woman driver’s problems” like “anything in cars that might snag their nylons.”
