It is well known that Sagittarians make great teachers, lawyers, performers, comedians, artists, philosophers, leaders and musicians. And even with Mercury in Sagittarius, great writers too. So that runs the gamut. So this is a comprehensive round up just in case you missed how multi faceted this zodiac sign actually is, its range is wide. Top of the list are the giants like William Blake who straddles poetry, art and mysticism, and Ludwig Beethoven whose work is monumental and will still be listened to in hundreds of years. But there was  also Oliver Messiaen who composed music  La Constellation du Sagittaire which was his zodiac sign.

Sagittarians make great magicians like Franz Bardon.  He was much less known than Aleister Crowley, but nevertheless regarded as one of the most important occultists of the 20th Century, and still we have Dion Fortune, let’s not forget, who was also a Sagittarian and an acute psychologist. for a modern Sagittarian magicians look to  Uri Geller. Needless to say Sagittarians also make great astrologers like Robert Hand Nik Kollerstrom and Karen Hamaker-Zondag and these are only the known charts.

Dec 2nd, is the birthday of Britney Spears, who in spite of her wobbly personality is still much loved and, when on form, delivers the goods as a performer. But so many Sagittarian singers. Note also Christine Aguilera, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Nicki Minaj- who all love to perform. But before them some of the greats of old include Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick and thunder thighs (Sagittarius is linked to the thighs) herself, Tina Turner who became the ultimate Buddhist fulfilling the yearnings of her spiritual nature.

There are also some oddball singers Little Richard, Frank Zappa, Ted Nugent and Tom Waits, and there are two outstanding opera stars Maria Callas, whose voice no one can match, and Jose Carreras.

Sagittarians can even be great hedonists crazies who go off piste from time to time, but are still entertaining. There’s Jim Morrison of the Doors, Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath, Jay-Z and wild man Billy Idol. Some Sagittarians in this category can come across with a certain edgy swagger like Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

Then there are philosopher teachers, leader and gurus like Osho, Bruce Lee and B.K.S. Iyengar also embody many quintessentially Sagittarian traits as ultimate teachers all offering some form of physical practice yoga and martial arts-which marries the higher and lower self. Iyengar said ‘my body is my temple and the asanas are my prayers’ but he also said, as a true Sagittarian, that ‘honesty is essential’ in teaching. With Mercury in Sagittarius he could sometimes be difficult to understand when speaking. But there’s also wiseacre, Noam Chomsky, who functions in dual areas as linguistic philosopher and political activist, and then there's author who popularises 'Life School' philosophy, Alain de Botton.

Then we have the artists and painters from Masaccio, to Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Jan Toroop to Lucien Freud and the ever controversial, Marina Abramovic. But one mention must go to French artist and teacher of painting, William Adolph Bougereau, His name was tarnished as being too traditional, not  being ‘modern’ enough by Picasso and the art gallery owners who ganged up against him and cast him into the margins of art history as an old fuddy duddy, but he was was as skilled and technically accomplished as any of the Renaissance painters, ran his own school and more hard working and prolific than any of the Impressionists or Post-Impressionists or Cubists.

Then we have the visionary Sci Fi writers  Philip K. Dick author of the stories that made it into film: Blade Runner, Minority Report and The Adjustment Bureau. Dick spoke of visions of the future that have if not come true, then are resonating widely. His imagination was as fertile as any and he worked at top speed even bringing downloads of Gnostic wisdom into novels like Valis. Also Arthur C. Clarke and C.S. Lewis were both Sagittarians. These are the big names in the field whose legacy remains strong.

And the film directors can’t be bigger Fritz Lang, Stephen Spielberg and Ridley Scott who directed some of the best known films in past decades and has just directed Napoleon. But working on a smaller, more intimate scale we should not ignore Woody Allen, John Cassavetes, and the lesser known Argentinian film director, Marco Berger.

And who is the most loved actress in the UK?  Yorkshire born, Dame Judi Dench as talented and versatile as any actress can be. But world renowned actors include Liv Ullman, John Malkovich, Christopher Plummer, Brad Pitt, Kim Basinger, Julianne Moore and Jake Gylenhaal, most of them known around the world not just in their home countries.

Finally the athletes. Sagittarius is a fully developed physical sign – the hybrid centaur- so we have runner Florence Griffiths-Joyner, Donovan Bailey, and Oscar Pistorius, and football player Kylian Mbappe, along with Tennis players Boris Becker and Monia Seles.

And now to end with comedian Bill Hicks, a Sagittarian, capturing the essence of a daily thought in the minds of these fiery, idealistic spirits:

If you think the world is accelerating towards a collective psychosis, you are not alone but it could be a  magnified reflection of our own fears. According to author Paul Levy to recognise that there’s a dream-like quality to reality is the first step to activating your creative higher self, and to use the Daimon- the inner genius or ‘higher’ self- is a way to counter the wetiko mind-blindness that appears to have become virulent in the world. This means taking a ‘quantum’ perspective and Sagittarius is at home with the quantum world and the weird and multiple perspectives and dimensions it brings to bear on the old solidified way of seeing reality.

Yuja Wang Left Me Gobsmacked

I often aim for some shred of originality when writing these concert reviews, however, I fear raving about Yuja Wang is a tale as old as time in the concert hall sphere. Wang has a reputation that precedes her, as one of the most critically acclaimed pianists of our time with a palpable star power. Her recordings have floated around my playlist for years, and I was awestruck when I saw videos of her iconic bows, where it seems her head might even brush the piano keys. It nearly goes without saying that I was profoundly excited when I heard she was coming to the concert hall nearest and dearest to my heart. This was the first time I had ever seen a solo recital as a part of the Seattle Symphony’s season, and it was like nothing I’d experienced before. This was my version of what I imagine to be a Swiftie's experience at a Taylor Swift concert, with the unique joy of fangirling.

I’ll admit, I was particularly excited to see what Wang would be wearing, as I have always adored her sense of style. She didn’t disappoint, with not one, but two stunning dresses. One, a full-length teal gown, and the other, a shorter bedazzled cocktail dress paired with impossibly tall Loubitins. I take the time to describe her outfits in an attempt to impart just how dazzling she is and to revel a bit in the fangirl lifestyle. Moving on to the good stuff though, the program was really a sight to behold. I was introduced to French composer Oliver Messiaen with a few selections from his Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus. Upon reading that title, I was a bit skeptical, thinking that it was about to be something akin to 17th-century sacred music. However, Messiaen has a modern impressionist sound that I was really quite fond of, especially with “The Kiss of the Infant Jesus,” where Wang would bring forth complex chords, which then settled on my ears like a light snow. In addition to the Messiaen, Wang also played Scriabin’s Sonata No. 8 and Debussy’s L’isle Joyeuse, so truly a feast for those hungry for complex tonal relationships. 

After Wang emerged in her second outfit of the evening, she endeavored to play all four of Chopin’s ballades. As a Chopin fangirl (there is a picture of him hanging in my living room), seeing Yuja Wang perform some of my favorite pieces made for exponential fangirling, fangirling squared if you will. The ballades were listed in order on the program, but my ears immediately pricked up as she chose to play Ballade No. 2 first. No. 2 is perhaps my favorite of the four, so my confusion regarding the order quickly faded into excitement. She then played the other three with impeccable technique and feeling, but the order now escapes my memory because soon after, I was gobsmacked by the seven encores that she played.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the way that recitals of the classical tradition typically go, one can count on an encore after the main program, and perhaps sometimes a second or third can be squeezed out if the audience continues to clap for an obscene amount of time. The first two encores performed by Wang were pieces that were unfamiliar to me, with a Phillip Glass etude and a movement of a Samuel Barber sonata. I knew things were getting real with the third encore, which was a rousing piano arrangement of Arturo Marquez’s Danzon No.2. I was shocked when she came back for a fourth, with “The Lark” by the father of Russian music, Mikhail Glinka. The fifth encore had me absolutely giddy, with a piano arrangement of the third movement of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, which I wouldn’t have thought possible for human hands. When she returned for a sixth, it seemed the room might break out into chaos, and she played yet another insane piano arrangement, this time, of Shostakovich’s 8th string quartet. By the seventh encore, I was seeing God. It was a beautiful way to wrap up the evening, with Chopin’s Nocturne No. 8, the audience was in rapture by the restrained beauty, and it seemed things had gone full circle. There’s nothing quite like the internal pride felt at being able to identify 5/7 of Wang’s encores on the fly, and the determination to expand my brain’s repertoire so that one day, I may identify all seven. 

I hope you, dear blawg reader, have gathered how much this show rocked my world. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and my most heartfelt thanks go out to the Seattle Symphony and my beautiful city.

Sebastian Reynolds Does It Again on Ambient Dance Single + Video for "Fetus"

Out today is  “Fetus,” the second single from Oxford, UK-based electronic composer Sebastian Reynolds‘ from his new album Canary, out September 29th via PinDrop. Reynolds describes “Fetus” as “a modern classical dreamscape for a disrupted mindstate.”

Where the claustrophobic leadoff single “Cascade” confronts the horrors of terrorism (while still managing to be dance-y), “Fetus” creates a hallucinatory sense of spaciousness that recalls film composers Hans Zimmer, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and experimental cellist Oliver Coates.

Reynolds explains: “Our son was born asleep on 24th July 2020, and I composed ‘Fetus’ as a tribute to Noah and is shared with love and empathy for all those affected by tragedies such as this.”

“Fetus” combines haunting piano, chiming Thai Gong Circle, a heart-stopping cello performance from Stornoway’s Jonathan Ouin, and vocal samples from Cornish singer Sarah Tresidder.

Inspired by Susumu Yokota, Luigi Nono, Olivier Messiaen, Stockhausen, and Thom Yorke, Canary‘s soundscapes visit upon traumas like the stillbirth of a child, the death of one’s parents and survival after a bomb attack, as well as themes like the fragmentation of our collective cognition, the awakening of machine intelligence and Pali Buddhist notions of consciousness.

As always, Reynolds remains intent on preserving a sense of meaning in his hybrid of programmed and organic sounds.

Born to a computer-engineer mom who worked for Research Machines, Sebastian Reynolds grew up “surrounded by dusty, strange machines that played games from cassettes.” Naturally, he was drawn to electronic production before he ever picked up a “real” instrument. But when he started kicking around in bands, his music acquired a living-breathing-sweating essence that it’s maintained over his 25-year career. This is, after all, an artist who named one of his releases Nihilism Is Pointless…

His new album Canary, however, raises the bar with soul-stirring meditation on life, death and the afterlife in the wake of his mother’s passing, followed not long thereafter by the stillbirth of his son. Influenced by what he describes as the aural “dreamworld” created by Susumu Yokota, as well as the post-traumatic shell shock that galvanized the compositions of Luigi Nono, Olivier Messiaen, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, Reynolds is especially adapt at blurring the line between mechanical and organic sound sources.

Reynolds hybridizes programmed and played sound sources not like some gleeful modern-day Frankenstein/Kurzweil who’s lost perspective on what it means to be alive, but as someone who sees electronic music as a fertile medium to express meaning.  As a teenager growing up in Oxford, England during the ’90s, Reynolds was close to ground zero when Radiohead showed that they could conserve the humanity of their music, even as they plunged head-first into a kind of digital abyss.

Similarly, though Canary peers over the edge of the precipice we all find ourselves facing today — a bomb going off, the fragmentation of our collective mindscape, the awakening of machine intelligence, a child’s life cut-off at birth, and the quotidian reality of living the rest of one’s life without their parents — Reynolds always manages to locate a heartbeat in his electro-organic mélange of sounds.

Reynolds has collaborated with Anne Müller (Erased Tapes) and Alex Stolze (Bodi Bill), Mike Bannard at The Aviary, and others. Sebastian also continues to work on commissions for Neon Dance. His projects have received airtime across the BBC and beyond.

Since we’re heading into the Christmas season, I thought I’d choose as today’s Random Contemporary Music, the tenth movement of Oliver Messiaen‘s Vingt Regards sur l'enfant-Jésus ("Twenty looks at the child Jesus") for solo piano. This is X. Regard de l'Esprit de joie ("Contemplation of the joyful Spirit"), played by Pierre-Laurent Aimard. The full work—only rarely performed in its entirety—is over two hours long, and is absolutely filled throughout with the same fervent passion as you’ll hear in this single movement. I strongly encourage you to seek out the work in full!
