Do you have any headcanons on how Starscream and Megatron deal with each other post-canon (considering Megs comes back to life courtesy of Unicron)?

After Rising, I imagined that once Megatron finds out Optimus has sacrificed himself to restore the Well, he leaves Cybertron on a self-imposed exile. Even if he’s lost his taste for inflicting oppression, he might realise changing his ways is easier said than done; violence was all he knew for millions of years—how can he hold something, now, without crushing it, without staining it with the ‘blood’ on his hands? Is it really his place to reintegrate into the society he destroyed?

He might figure he has no right to be forgiven, but it’s an undue burden on his victims to keep him alive, even if it’s in a prison cell. If he stays, he might tear everything down again, so the kindest option is to leave and not look back. Reconstruction is better left in the servos of those who still hold gentleness in their sparks.

I feel like Starscream would have mixed feelings about that. It might take him a bit to accept that the Decepticon cause is truly lost now—no more soldiers, no more war, no more glory. He can either cooperate in the endeavour towards peace or cease to exist himself. And in the end, of course he’ll cooperate, because that’s what it takes to survive. But isn’t it maddening / pitiful / laughable that after all this time, even after Megatron is gone, he’s still on someone’s leash? He’s still beholden to the whims of other people? He’s still having to pose and grovel for forgiveness? When Megatron could just slag off into deep space with no accountability for his actions?

(And, aside from that, it emphasises how—past, present, future—Megatron could always stand on his own. He could always make his own decisions, whether anyone liked them or not. He always had that kind of power, that force of will Starscream could only ever dream of. How sad.)

(And how tragic that when Megatron left, he took Starscream’s chance of finally getting to ‘win’ with him. Three million years of power struggle and trying to prove he was just as good a leader, if not better, down the drain. What’s left after that—table scraps cleaning up someone else’s mess? A poor victim shambling to pick up the pieces? Terribly unbecoming! Time to reframe everything that ever happened so he doesn’t have to look so pathetic.)

Still, Megatron’s gone, which is… Better. Even if Starscream still has to play by the rules, at least these rules are less cruel. And there’s no more Megatron! He should be happy about that! (If only it was so easy when the entire way he operates has been moulded by the abuse, but idle hands are the devil’s playground and all that, so if he just keeps busy as usual he doesn’t ever have to self-reflect 😏 He can just strategically not think about useless things like the past or his feelings, and instead focus on the here and now! And he does a very good job of that!)

I do imagine he recovers a bit eventually, though—as people return to Cybertron and society gets rebuilt, his world gets bigger and fuller to the point Megatron is just a shadow on the horizon… And then maybe Megatron comes back at that point, which sticks a wrench in things, but at that point I’d like to believe they’ve both grown enough as people for Megatron to go about things rationally without being cruel, and for Starscream to keep a very professional distance if they absolutely MUST interact, and NOT vie for his attention anymore.

(Sadly, I don’t think Megatron ever apologises for what he did to Starscream, but I don’t think Starscream would care for one anyway. I’d like to think he wouldn’t care how Megatron feels about him at all, by then.)

I get that it's entirely dependent on the iteration but I think its a little funny when Megatron and Starscream are portrayed as having this 100% abuser/victim dynamic because it just looks like this to me
