in the context of zoro learning from mihawk his swordfighting skills during the timeskip, the fact that he might have also picked up some of his speech patterns is so funny to me

So, repeatedly during his fight with Hyouzou, Zoro calls him a カエル/kaeru (frog), even though he’s pretty clearly an octopus, and Hyouzou is obviously baffled by this. It’s not until the end of the fight that we get the explanation. Zoro cuts Hyouzou down and then states what he thought he was a frog because 井の中のよ/i no naka no yo. Basically, “(Because) you’re in a well.”

This is a reference to a pretty well-known Japanese proverb. The full thing goes 井の中の蛙大海を知らず/i no naka no kawazu, taikai wo shirazu. “The frog in the well knows nothing of the great ocean.” It’s about how people with narrow worldviews and experiences don’t know jack shit, basically. So Zoro spends this entire fight essentially calling Hyouzou an ignorant dumbass.

Sanji has some pretty clever culinary-based wordplay here when finishing off Wadatsumi!

Basically, Sanji has been mocking Wadatsumi by calling him フグ/fugu (pufferfish). Wadatsumi, on seeing Sanji jumping through the air, says ド肝抜かれた/dogimo nukareta, which means basically ‘I’m astonished/flabbergasted,’ but literally means something like ‘to draw out guts/nerve.’ The main component parts of the phrase are 抜く/nuku, meaning ‘to withdraw/pull out’, and 肝/kimo, meaning ‘nerve’ or, importantly here, ‘liver.’

Now, the liver is the most poisonous part of the pufferfish.

So, when Sanji annihilates Wadatsumi, he turns his earlier words around on him completely by saying, 肝抜きに気を遣う/kimo nuki ni ki wo tsukau. “(When preparing pufferfish), one must take care in extracting the liver.”
