What with all the axolotls in the ONIMAI opening?

Well, according to Wikipedia, axolotls are one of the few amphibians who don't undergo metamorphosis, in which they would lose their gills and start living on land. Instead, they remain aquatic and gilled without taking to the land. This is because their body does not produce the proper hormone to undergo metamorphosis.

However, the axolotl can be given artifical hormones and be able to live on land. (THIS PRACTICE IS HIGHLY DISCOURAGED AS THIS COULD RESULT IN DEATH EVEN IN SUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS).

Anyway, similar to giving an axolotls hormones to undergo metamorphosis, Mihari gives Mahiro hormones to undergo the "metamorphosis" of female adolescence and get him used to going outside.

The aquatic form of the axolotl is stuck in the video game world.

However, as soon as we see the land form of the axolotl, we cut to a game-over screen. And we see Mahiro, who is going through his own artificial metamorphosis to become a productive member of society.

Not a perfect analogy, but an interesting one to be honest.

Any good anime this season?

I haven't really started much this season! I have been having mental/physical health issues, and also been super busy with life stuff and these archiving projects, so I haven't really prioritized it.

Part of it, honestly, is that nothing *really* jumped out at me this season. I thought MagiRevo looked interesting so I watched a few episodes of it, but while not bad at all it has this very slow pacing that gets repetitional, and is a bit too in love with making its characters cutesy-perfect without having the kind of plot to match that. I may continue it later? Oniichan wa Oshimai! looks like it could be a fun show, but I haven't started it yet. I really like a lot of script writer Michiko Yokote's works - Princess Tutu, Genshiken, Call of the Night - but they work on so many shows that I don't really know if they are adding a lot of their own touch to those shows versus being a part of the machine (not an insult, this is a role structure/org thing), I don't think they are a Yōji Enokido or anything.

I did just finish Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which was extremely good, second best thing Trigger has ever made. And I have been reading more manga these days, its a field I want to get into. I could recommend my darling Kei Toume's new work, Karakida-ke no Koshogurashi, about three sisters running a used bookstore? If you want to learn about how the Japanese bookstore industry runs its auctions and coordinates bids, you are gonna! Its fucking great!

But yeah hopefully a bit later I will tackle some of the 'seasonals', just hasn't been my time this winter.

As much as I'm into manga in the aggregate, there's not a large number of series I really follow. For a long time, there were only really three that hadn't already made the jump to anime in some manner.

Then Komi Has A Communication Disorder got picked up. it's now in its second series. And Idolmaster Cinderella Girls U149 now has a series coming out this summer, which is a series I really did not expect to get that treatment.

So I was down to one. Oniichan ha Oshimai! ("Onii-chan is Done For!", or the localized title, "Onimai: I'm now your sister!") is a cute little series, originally launched as a we manga and subsequently given serialization, that combines genderbending with a sort of "adolescence do-over" plot. Our protagonist, Mahiro, is a college-aged man who's dropped out of life, living as a self-styled "in-home security guard" and rarely leaving his room. His younger sister, Mihari, a genius medical researcher despite being of high-school age, drugs him with an experimental formula that turns him into a roughly 14-year-old girl, in an attempt to rehabilitate him. Under the guidance of his sister, he'll have to learn to go outside, make friends, and become a useful member of society, all as a cute young woman. Despite the odd premise and occasional troublesome content, it's very funny and not-infrequently touching, and it's placed highly in various "manga we want to see animated" polls. But I didn't really figure it had a chance of making the jump to anime.

But it's a strange world out there.

The first episode of Oniichan wa Oshimai! streamed early! One of the things you will notice about the main character Mahiro is that he owns a lot of manga and games.

The manga on the left reads 「ア二マルフレンズ」. This translates to "Animal Friends", and is likely a reference to real life franchise Kemono Friends.

The manga on the right reads 「この見上げた世界を祝福せよ」. This translates to "Bless this world you look up to!". This likely is a reference to the light novel series - Konosuba / God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!

The poster on the top reads "Clovers"

The poster on the bottom reads 「Lazy Cats 黄金作戦」. This translates to "Lazy Cats Golden Tactics". No idea what either is a reference to.

The manga in the front reads 「ももいろライノ」. This (probably) translates to "peach rhino". Again, no idea what this is a reference to, lmao. (Edit: there is a nonzero chance of this being a dick joke lmao)

I'm not actually fluent in Japanese. I only know enough to be able to read hiragana and katakana and plug kanji into Jisho.

Also Studio Bind really decked out Mahiro's room. It's nowhere near as detailed in the manga.
