This week, I told you about the women's strike in Poland against the government's new abortion restrictions. But there's another country in Europe where it's even worse... Malta. In this highly catholic nation, there's no exception in case of rape or even incest! And most of the rapes happens within the family... Which means some women have to carry the child of their dad or their uncle!! If they have the budget, they may go abroad to get an abortion. If not, they order abortion pills online (not safe & not guaranteed) or worse, they try to get an illegal abortion on the island... risking their life and facing 3 years of prison if they get caught! How revolting is that?! 😡 This new painting is meant to raise awareness about violations to women's rights. Abortion should be a right for ALL women. The goal of my new serie of nudes to raise awareness about rape culture.⁣ ⁣ ⏩ What is rape culture? It refers to the behaviors in a society which allow sexual violence to be normalized and even justified. Here are a few examples : ⁣ ✖️ "come on, did you see how she was dressed?"⁣ ✖️ "she was drunk, you can't call that a rape..." ⁣ ⁣ You get the idea? ⁣ ⁣ In this painting, I wrote into the woman's body names like "whore" or "slut", insults that women hear at least once in her life. A few years ago, I was in the subway in Paris and a guy asked me in a rude way if he could use my phone. I came up with a stupid excuse and said "no", feeling a little guilty by seriously doubting of his intentions. Two seconds later, he went off and called me a whore, a slut, a bitch, "suck my dick", "I spit on you" and so on. ⁣ ⁣ At first, I was so shocked that I didn't know what to reply! When I could finally open my mouth, what came out was : "sorry but you are being very impolite!" 🙄 I just couldn't find the words!!! I wanted to leave but I couldn't, he was blocking the way out of my seat. I looked around, there were people sitting behind me but no one moved nor spoke up nor did anything. They acted as if they weren't hearing! ⁣ ⁣ I thought about punching him to get out (I was a professional athlete, I had decent strength), but what if he had a knife? So I sat still and looked out the window, trying to ignore the endless stream of insults.⁣ ⁣ This went on for the next two subway stations, 6 minutes that felt like 60. Finally, he stood up and left, with a few last insults on his way out. I arrived at my destination a few stations later, pretty shaken up by what just happened to me! A friend was meeting me for lunch, so I told him right away all the details of my horrible subway ride! And guess what was his answer? "Oh yeah, it happens pretty often here..."⁣ ⁣ He was barely shocked, rather jaded. As if it has became normal. As if insults didn't mean anything anymore. As if they didn't hurt, nor haunt. ⁣ ⁣ Well they did. Words should never be underestimated. They are verbal violence, sometimes even more powerful than the physical one. ⁣ ⁣ Have you ever lived such a thing? Have you been insulted, been called a whore, a bitch, a slut? How did it feel?
