The Long Game - Derek Hale Imagine
Requested by @derangedangel : Imagine request :) Reader is the same age as Scott & the others but has a crush on Derek & is always flirting with him but Derek doesn't reciprocate those feelings because of the age difference. But reader is in it for the "long game." Like a GMW Maya & Josh situation. A few years later reader comes back & Derek likes her back. Thanks :D
Word Count: 4,502
Warning: Derek being abused and injured.

Y/N couldn't keep her lips from forming into a smirk as she saw Derek's picture appear on her phone. She had just moved back to Beacon Hills earlier today into her new apartment. She had spent most of the day unpacking her boxes, and was already in bed watching a movie on her laptop. She quickly swiped her thumb across the phone and answered. "Hello, stranger. It’s after midnight. No guy ever calls a girl after midnight except for one-"
"Y/N..." Derek interrupted followed by a loud growl. Y/N could hear Derek's heartbeat going crazy and his labored breathing. What caught her attention was hearing another heartbeat. "I need you."
His voice was filled with worry, which caused Y/N to sit up straight in her bed alarmed. "Derek, where are you?"
"I don't know..." he whispered unexpectedly. He no longer sounded like he was in pain or fighting against someone. He now sounded weak and hurt.
"Derek, I need you to talk to me. What do you see?" She asked as she quickly got out of bed to get dressed.
"I can't... see anything..." he mumbled. She rushed as she heard his heartbeat getting weaker by the second.
She swallowed hard as she closed her eyes, letting a tear fall down her cheek. She was absolutely terrified for him. "Derek... I'm going to come and get you, okay? But I need to call Stiles to help me. Can you answer the phone if I call you back?"
"My phone... is going to die..."
"Fuck!" She whispered to herself. She put on her shoes as an idea crossed her mind. "After you hang up with me, turn off your phone and save the battery for about 10 minutes. That'll be about the time it will take me to get to Stiles’ office at the police station. I'll call you back but you have to answer, okay?"
"O... kay..." he mumbled weakly.
"Derek?" Her voice trembled. He hummed a small ‘yes’. "Please answer the phone."
"I promise," he said before he hung up and turned off his phone like he was told to do.
Y/N grabbed her keys before rushing to her car. Her fingers trembled as she dialed Stiles’ number. For some strange reason a flashback flooded her mind to the first time she went to Stiles for help with Derek.
"Hey, Lahey," Stiles greeted Y/N as she sat next to him. "What's up?"
"I need your advice," she said.
Stiles furrowed his eyebrows. "Don't take this the wrong way, but why don't you ask your twin brother?"
Y/N rolled her eyes. "Isaac is useless when it comes to love advice."
"That's true. The only thing that boy likes are his scarfs." She giggled at Stiles’ sarcastic comment. "I don't know how much I can help you, but I can try my best. If my advice sucks, just remember you came to me when you could have gone to Lydia first."
"Lydia won't help either. Actually, she can't know about this either," she said quietly.
"Wow..." Stiles eyes widened a little bit. "This must be serious."
She nodded her head. "I need help planning a ten year plan."
"For...?"
"Just like you have one for Lydia," she answered, purposely ignoring his question.
"Yes. I get that, but who do you want to have a ten year plan for?" He pressed on.
She shrugged it off as if the 'who' wasn't important. "I just need you to give me some pointers and tips, and I'll be good from there. I just need that little push to get me going, ya know?"
"Yes, I do, but answer the question. Who is it?!" His hands flung in the air, desperate to know who Y/N had a crush on.
"Promise me you won't judge?" She fiddled with her fingers.
"I swear, if you don't tell me-"
"Derek," she finally admitted. She quickly closed her eyes, too scared to see her best friend's reaction.
Stiles jaw dropped as he tried to grasp the name that rolled off her tongue. "Der-" he couldn't even say the name. "Sourwolf?!" He finally mustered out too loudly.
"What about Derek?" Isaac asked as he sat down to join his twin sister and her best friend. Y/N's eyes flew wide open at the sound of Isaac's voice.
"Did you know your sister is in love with- OOOWWWWWW!!!" Stiles yelled mid-sentence as Y/N punched him in the shoulder to shut up.
"With Derek?" Isaac asked as if it's no secret.
"Wait a minute, you know?" She asked shocked.
Isaac rolled his eyes. "Of course I know. A blind man would know. I don't need my werewolf senses to know your in love with him, and I hate to burst your bubble, but you know Derek doesn't like you back, right?"
"How do you know that?" She asked, trying not to show her disappointment.
"He said you're too young."
I rolled my eyes. "What's 5 years?"
"Age is just a number," Stiles added. "Besides, in ten years she'll be 26 and he'll be 31. It won't matter then." He looked at Isaac before turning to look at his best friend. "I'll help you... If this is really what you want, Y/N."
"I do," she said honestly. “I’m in it for the long game.”
"Okay, then let's get started on your ten-year plan with Derek." Y/N smiled at Stiles’ words as Isaac groaned in annoyance.
"Stiles," Y/N’s voice wavered as she walked up to his desk, ignoring the rest of the deputies giving her a worried look as her eyes were filled with tears.
He immediately stood up from his chair and hugged her tight, whispering everything would be okay and that they'd find Derek. Stiles pulled back but kept an arm around her shoulder and pulled her close to him as he led her to the Sheriff’s office. Stiles was expecting her. She had called him on the drive over here. He knew exactly what he needed to do, but he couldn't do it around deputies who didn't know about the supernatural world, and he knew the Sheriff wouldn't mind them using his office.
Jordan looked up from his paper work and quickly saw Stiles before going back to filling out the rest of the report, not noticing Y/N behind him. "Stiles, you can't just barge in here like you used when your dad was Sheriff. The least you can do is knock."
The sound of someone sniffling caught Jordan's attention. He looked up and saw Y/N in tears. "It's Derek," she whispered.
"Shut the door, Stilinski," Jordan's voice had turned into his Sheriff voice, ready to ask questions and investigate what happened. "What happened to Derek, Y/N?"
Already knowing what happened, Stiles ignored Jordan's question and jumped in to take over this case. "Are the ten minutes up?"
"Ten minutes?" Jordan asked confused. "What happens in ten minutes?"
She nodded at Stiles as she pulled out her phone. Y/N didn't have to time to catch Jordan up, and decided to follow her best friend's actions by ignoring Jordan’s questions to prevent wasting anymore time.
"We're going to trace the call and we'll find him," Stiles said as he pulled Jordan up from his chair by the arm. This wasn't the first time Stiles had done this. Jordan decided to let it go instead of arguing with him about him being the boss and not Stiles, as he had never seen Y/N this scared and worried in her life before. They fought together years ago when Jordan joined Scott's pack and faced a lot of supernatural creatures and death together, but something about this situation made Jordan realize how serious it was as Y/N slowly unraveled by the minute.
As Stiles typed quickly on Jordan's keyboard, Jordan wrapped an arm around Y/N to comfort her. "We'll find him," he whispered before kissing her forehead. She nodded with hope.
"Okay, I'm ready," Stiles said as he put a pair of headphones on. "Call him."
Y/N didn't hesitate to dial Derek's number. She put it on speaker for everyone to hear. Derek answered shortly after the first ring.
"Y/N..." his voice was raspier than before. It sounded like he hadn't had water in days. "I... didn't... think... you'd-"
Getting the gist of what he was trying to say and wanting to save him from using his voice, Y/N quickly spoke. "I'm sorry. I got here as soon as I could," she sniffled. "Stiles and Jordan are here. They're tracking the call so we can find you."
"You have to stay on the phone for 3 minutes," Jordan spoke up.
"Derek, please stay with me," her chin trembled when he didn't respond and only heard his heart beating slower than its previous beat. She closed her eyes, silently praying he’d pull through.
"Y/N?" He whispered.
"Yes?" She whispered back, too scared of what he'll say next.
"I need to tell you something," he wheezed after each word. His words paralyzed her. Something about the way he said them, gave her a sense of what he was going to say.
"Don't you dare, Hale!" She whispered yelled. "You don't get to do this. Not now. Not when you're dying," she let out a small sob as Jordan engulfed her in a tight hug. He rocked her back and forth as his hand ran up and down her back to soothe her.
"Derek," Stiles spoke up. "Hey, buddy, I need you to stay on the phone for a few more seconds. You're a fighter. I know you can do this, okay?"
Y/N turned around and stared at Stiles. His words registered another old memory with Derek.
Y/N moved side to side after every punch Derek threw, dodging every hit. She surprised him when she caught his wrist, held it tight before flipping him over to land on the floor. She had his arm twisted and pinned down with her knee on his chest. She couldn't help the smirk on her face as she tried to catch her breath, feeling victorious she finally beat Derek in a training session.
"I wouldn't smirk if I were you," he said with a husky voice. Before she could ask why, his legs wrapped around her waist and used his weight to pull himself up while pushing her back to the floor. While doing that, he managed to free his arm and pinned her arms above her head. His face was inches from hers, his warm breath fanning against her lips. Her eyes flickered to his slightly parted lips and she swore she heard his heart skip a beat.
"Derek..." she smiled before locking her eyes with his.
He quickly sat up, letting the moment they were about to have slip away. He cleared his throat. "You can't lose your focus when you're fighting. You'll get hurt.”
"You worried about me getting hurt?" She teased as she sat up and pulled her legs to her chest, crossing her ankles together. "I'm a werewolf, remember? You shouldn't worry about me."
"Werewolf or not, you need to be careful. I don't want you getting hurt."
She scooted a little closer to Derek. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you care."
Derek sighed. "Of course I care, Y/N. You're my beta."
Y/N tried not to let it show that his words stung her as much as they did, but she couldn’t fool him even if she tried. Derek could sense the sudden change in her chemo signals. He sighed as he stood up, hating himself for causing her the slightest ounce of pain.
"Derek, why can't we be together?" She bluntly asked. She didn't care if she was putting herself out there, especially when she knows he already knows how she feels about him.
"Y/N..." Derek paused for a second, gathering the right words to say without hurting her more. "You're in high school-"
"So?" She quickly stood up from the floor. "What's 5 years? It's not that big of an age difference."
Derek turned around to face her, locking his eyes with hers to get her to understand. "You don't get it now, but you will someday. Okay?"
She looked at him, and judging by the seriousness in his eyes, she knew he wasn't going to give in, at least not right now, but that was okay. She had a 10-year plan still in progress. She smiled at Derek as she walked over to her duffle bag and slung it over her shoulder. "That's okay. I can wait. I'm in it for the long game." She walked out of his loft, leaving Derek with a smirk on his face. He couldn't help but chuckle as he shook his head at Y/N’s boldness. He watched her walk away and couldn’t help but think about what it would be like when they got together someday, because like her, he was also in it for the long game. She just didn't know it yet.
"Got it," Stiles shouted a little too loudly, pulling Y/N out of her memory with Derek.
"Where is he?" Jordan and Y/N asked in unison.
"He's in an abandoned warehouse in Canaan," Stiles stood up immediately after writing down the address. "We gotta go!"
"I'm coming with," Jordan said as he quickly grabbed his jacket.
Y/N turned off the speakerphone and put the phone to her ear. "Derek, we're coming for you. I'm coming for you. Please fight it. You can't leave yet. It's too soon," she closed her eyes as a tear fell down her cheek. "You have your whole life ahead of you," she whispered as she remembered when Derek used the exact same words the night before she left for college.
"Why do you have a crush on my cousin?" Malia's blunt question startled Y/N as she had been staring at Derek from across the bonfire for the past 5 minutes.
"I have no doubt he heard that," Lydia said as she took a sip from her red cup.
Y/N shrugged her shoulders. "I don't care if he hears. He already knows I have feelings for him."
"Well in that case, answer Malia's question. What is it about Derek that has you crushing on him for the past two years?" Lydia asked with a smile.
"It's not a crush," Y/N answered honestly. "I may be young, but I know what I'm feeling isn't just a crush."
Y/N's answer left Malia and Lydia in complete shock, unable to find words to respond. They had no idea she had real feelings for Derek. They always thought it was puppy love and would eventually fade away someday.
"Do you think I'm stupid-"
"For having genuine feelings for someone? No." Lydia interrupted.
"No, for leaving. I mean, me going away to college doesn't exactly give me a chance to see if things could ever happen between me and Derek."
The girls noticed a hint of worry in Y/N's voice and gave her a sympathetic look.
"Y/N?" The girls all turned around to see Derek looking at Y/N. "Do you have a minute?"
Y/N swallowed hard as she gave him a half smile. She nodded at the girls, letting them know she'll be fine, and walked towards Derek. He offered her his hand. She didn't hesitate to take it as he led her to the woods. She couldn't help the smile forming on her lips as he held her hand tight, refusing to let her go.
After a few minutes of walking, Derek stopped as they reached a clearing. The scene in front of them was too good to be true. It was something you'd only see in a professional photograph or movie. The moon hung low and shined through the warm water as small ripples waved through with the breeze. Fireflies flow throughout the woods. The stars were bright and twinkling in the night sky. It was absolutely beautiful.
"Derek..." Y/N said breathlessly. "It's beautiful."
"I found this place a while back when I went for a jog one night and you were the first person I thought about."
"You did?" She turned around to look at Derek, whose eyes were focused on the scenery in front of them.
He hummed a 'yes'. "There's something beautiful and comforting about this place, and I told myself that one day I would bring you here."
"You did?" Her voice sounded happier than before as she smiled at him.
"Y/N... I don't want you to stay here."
Her smile completely vanished as his words had once again caused a pang of pain to her heart. Derek didn't let that go unnoticed as he turned around and looked at her. Her eyes were clouded with confusion and pain. Derek grabbed her hands in his and hoped he could bring back the sparkle in her eyes he loved so much.
He sighed. "Y/N... I want you to go to college and live your life. Make friends, go to parties, join a sorority, and make a bunch of stupid mistakes that will teach you a lesson. Go live the life I never had the chance to live. You have your whole life ahead of you and I don't want to be the one that gets in the way."
"Derek..." She whispered as tears brimmed the edge of her eyes. "I-"
"Hey, don't worry about me. Don't worry about us, okay? I'm in it for the long game too... when the time is right," he smiled.
She chuckled as she buried her head in his chest, embarrassed. She had no idea he had known about her 10-year plan. Derek chuckled as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead before he spoke, "you and Stiles weren't exactly discreet about your 10-year plan."
She stayed in his warm embrace for a few minutes before looking up at him. "Don't tell the others, but I'm going to miss you the most,” she whispered softly.
"I miss you already," he whispered back as he rested his forehead against hers.
"Are you sure this the location?" Jordan asked as Stiles pulled up to the abandoned warehouse.
"According to the GPS, yes it is,” Stiles answered.
Y/N didn't even wait for Stiles to turn off the car as she quickly got out and rushed inside, ignoring Stiles’ and Jordan's protests for her wait for them.
"Derek?!" Y/N yelled as she pushed through the door and into the dark building. She concentrated as she closed her eyes. In a matter of seconds she had shifted and used her werewolf eyes to make her way around the dark building. With her senses, she could hear a faint heartbeat.
"Y/N!" The boys called out as they walked in with their flashlights.
She quickly turned back to Stiles. "Go back to the car, turn it on, and wait for me."
"Why?" He asked.
"Because when I find him, I need you to haul ass all the way to the nearest hospital or animal clinic," she said.
Stiles nodded as he pulled out his phone. "I'll call Melissa and Deaton to meet us there."
"Do you know where he is?" Jordan asked as he walked up to her.
"No," she closed her eyes and focused. She could barely smell his scent as it was mixed with blood and wolfsbane. Her eyes flew wide open. "But we have to hurry."
"Why?" Jordan asked worriedly.
"Because I smell wolfsbane and that's not good. There's no one else in here. Let's split up and find him." Y/N took off before Jordan could agree or protest.
They looked everywhere, checking every room behind every door. They called out for him, but got no response back.
"Where are you?" Y/N whispered as she closed her eyes and leaned against a wall, focusing.
"Base... ment..." Y/N's eyes opened as she heard Derek's weak whisper.
"Jordan! Basement!" She yelled as she ran to the stairs that would lead her to Derek. Jordan was already there struggling to open the door. She pushed him aside and kicked down the door, kicking it off the hinges with her werewolf strength.
"Yeah, that'll work," Jordan mumbled as he followed Y/N.
"Derek!" Y/N yelled as she saw him on the floor in a pool of his own blood. "Stay with me," she said as she wrapped one of his arms around her neck. "Jordan help me," she grunted.
Jordan did the same as they lifted him up and carried him up the stairs. Derek rolled his head to Y/N's shoulder and struggled to lift his head to look at her. "You came..." he whispered.
"Of course I did," Y/N panted as she carried Derek. "Why wouldn't I come looking for you?"
"I didn't..." Derek started but couldn't finish what he had to say because he passed out.
Y/N looked down at Derek to see his eyes closed. Her heart dropped but she picked up the pace, as did Jordan. "Stiles!" Y/N said as they reached the car. He opened the door. Y/N quickly got in before Jordan and Stiles put Derek in the back seat with her. Tears were streaming down her cheeks as she cupped his face. "Please, Derek, stay with me. I had a ten-year plan..." she sobbed as Stiles stepped on the gas.
Y/N felt Derek's hands twitch between hers. She sat up straight as her eyes watched him carefully on the table in the middle of the animal clinic. Stiles had called Deaton first and told him to go to his friend's animal clinic in the town next to Canaan. Melissa was actually on her way home from a weekend getaway with Chris when Stiles called her next. She was less than 10 minutes away and would stop at the animal clinic to help Derek. When Stiles arrived at the clinic, Deaton, Melissa, and Argent were already waiting and immediately started examining Derek. Whoever had kidnapped and tortured him had injected him with three different types of wolfsbane, which nearly killed him. By some miracle, they were able to save Derek. They just had to wait for Derek to wake up on his own.
Y/N never left his side throughout the night. She sat uncomfortably on a fold out chair next to the table Derek was on, and held one his hands with both of hers as she silently prayed for him to wake up. She didn't care if her butt was hurting or went numb; she wasn't leaving that chair until he woke up. Six hours later, Derek finally moved his hand in hers.
"Derek?" She whispered.
He squeezed her hand at the sound of her sweet, yet worried, voice. He slowly opened his eyes as he swallowed hard, noticing his mouth felt extremely dry. He closed his eyes before slowly opening them again and adjusting them. He didn't know where he was and he didn't care. All that matter was the girl in front of him who was watching him closely.
"Derek, you're at an animal clinic and you're going to be okay," her voice trembled.
He slowly lifted his hand and cupped her cheek. She leaned into his warm touch as tears slowly made their way down her cheek. Derek brushed them away with his thumb as tears were now forming in his eyes too. After the events that happened to him tonight, he never thought he'd see her again.
He slowly sat up, groaning and hissing in the process. Y/N was quick to help him, placing her hand gently on Derek’s bare chest. "Easy. You're going to be sore for-"
Derek silenced her as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in for a hug. He buried his head at the crook of her neck, taking in her scent, which he also thought he'd never get to smell again. Y/N's hands rubbed up and down his back to comfort him as she sniffled.
"Derek...?" He pulled back to look at her but kept his arms wrapped around her figure. His tired blue eyes locked with hers. Again, he appreciated her beautiful hazel eyes with specs of gold.
"Are you okay...?" She knew it was a stupid question but she had to ask. She wanted to make sure he was okay, and if he wasn't she'd do whatever he needed.
"I am now," he croaked. Y/N let out a small chuckle. Derek's grip tightened as she tried to turn around and get out of his embrace.
"I'm going to get you some water," she pointed at a water bottle on the counter top.
Derek let her go. She was quick to get the water bottle and go back to him. She helped him drink the water and she could see the cool water was a relief to Derek's throat. He sighed once he finally finished the entire water bottle.
He pulled her in, to where she was now standing between his legs. She had one hand on his chest and the other was on his cheek, her thumb sliding back and forth.
"You called me," she finally said. "You could have called anyone, but you called me... why?" She whispered, too scared to know the answer.
Derek let out a shaky breath before he swallowed hard. "Because tonight my life flashed before my eyes and all I saw was you. The moment I first saw you, the moment we first met, the moment I gave you the bite, your first full moon, our training sessions... seeing your perfect smile, your beautiful eyes, and seeing you laugh hysterically with your head rolled back..."
"Derek-”
"I thought I was going to die tonight and all I thought about was you, how stupid I was for not being with you sooner, or how I had to fight as long as I could because I knew if I died, it would have caused you this unbearable pain and I didn't want to be the one to cause you that-"
"Derek-" she said again, trying to say something, but he wouldn't let her as he shook his head. He had so much to say and he needed it get it all out.
"I love you, Y/N. I always have. I just didn't want to be the one to hold you back from your life because you had so much to see and do before you settled down, because trust me you are it. You are the one. You are the one I want to love the rest of my life, to get married to, and have kids with... you're my long game."
Happy tears spilled uncontrollably down Y/N cheeks as Derek spoke. She cupped his cheeks and pulled him in for a deep and passionate kiss that was long overdue. Derek didn't hesitate to kiss her back. He didn't care if he was still in pain and healing. Just like her, he waited for his moment for so long.
They pulled back when their lungs were burning for air, but kept their foreheads pressed together as their warm breaths mixed and fanned against their semi-swollen lips. Derek's hands were firmly on her hips as Y/N's hand cupped his cheek. She looked into his dark blue eyes. "I love you, too, Derek."
Their moment was interrupted by a hand banging against the window on the door, causing Y/N to jump out of her skin. They turned around to see Stiles with a goofy smile. "I guess my 10-year plan worked!"
Derek and Y/N chuckled as she buried her face at the crook of his neck, slightly embarrassed. Derek wrapped his arms around her figure and held her tight to his chest before kissing her forehead. "Did you really have a 10-year plan?" He asked.
A small smile tugged her lips, remembering how long ago that was. She looked up at Derek who smiled back at her, "yeah, I did. I was in it for the long game."
