Any tips on making your own patterns?

Certainly! I could list several, but here are a few that helped me out when I first started:

(1) Have some scratch paper/a pencil on hand OR use a spreadsheet program like Excel or whatever opensource equivalent you have. Freehanding is lovely, but if you're in the mind to publish or at least refer back to your pattern at some point, writing it down as you is essential. (Below is an example!)

(2) Start small and simple. You might have the most beautiful vision for a pattern, but if you haven't gotten comfortable with writing patterns yet, you're liable to frustrate yourself to death. My first original pattern was the little yippie/TBH beast I made for my brother (left), and there is ~2 year difference between that and my latest project (right). The TBH beast is made out of fairly simple shapes that are easy to break down into simple geometries (a ball for the head, a barrel shape for the body, and half-capsule shapes for legs).

(3) Learn to be okay with frogging. It can be tedious to undo several rows or even several hours worth of work, but trial-and-error is all a part of the process when you are trying to get the right size/shape for the given part you are working on.

Just remembered, for anyone in need of office software that works well with MS Office go check out OnlyOffice. It has the highest compatibility with MS Office files, and the desktop suite is opensource. I’d prefer not dealing with AGPLv3 but understandable considering their commercialisation model is selling enterprise cloud services.

It’s a lot better than LibreOffice, though it only ships with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. Then again there are better diagramming/vector editors out there and most people don’t need database software in their office suite.

Overview About Elementh Project

Hi guys , welcome back to my channel , guess what ! WHAT CAN ELEMENTH DO ?

Along with the system of tokens, Elementh has a system of goods, which can also be used in a large number of applications, such as tracking the movement of a particular item from its creation to the current owner, tracking original goods and detecting counterfeit goods. Unlike the system of tokens, the system of goods also provides for the ability to "issue" a particular product at a particular address, indicating all possible item's data (such as name, manufacturer, bar code, etc.). And if identical goods are already present in the blockchain, the issuer will receive a message about it, and he will have the opportunity to indicate how many items of goods he wants to "issue". If an item has a serial number, it is possible to specify it when the transfer operation is being performed. To provide protection against data forging, only the hash of the serial number is fixed in the system, therefore only the person who knows the initial number has the ability to make a valid transaction. Laravel Excel 3.0

Laravel Excel is a package by Maatwebsite that makes working with spreadsheets easy. It’s been out since 2013 and just recently released version 3.0 with some important breaking changes.

In their lessons learned post they go through the history of the project and why they have decided to make v3.0 a major breaking change from previous releases:

My goal for Laravel Excel 3.0 is to cater our own needs first and only add convenience methods that we need and would use ourselves, instead of re-inventing the PhpSpreadsheet “wheel”. The less code to solve the problem, the easier it should be to maintain.

The post is worth checking out specifically to look at opensource from the maintainer’s point of view and how it’s easy to let people change your goals to suit them. This quote is so perfect:

Laravel Excel used to be an opinionated PHPExcel but became an un-opinionated Excel for Laravel.

Laravel Excel 3.0 is now released and this version mainly focuses on exports and making it as simple as possible and is a complete break from previous versions. Here are some of the highlights from this release:

Easily export collections to Excel

Export queries with automatic chunking for better performance

Queue exports for better performance

Easily export Blade views to Excel

To give you an example of exporting in 3.0, take a look at this quick example taken from their documentation.

First, create an InvoicesExport class:

namespace App\Exports; class InvoicesExport implements FromCollection { public function collection() { return Invoice::all(); } }

Next, from your controller initialize the download:

public function export() { return Excel::download(new InvoicesExport, 'invoices.xlsx'); }

Or get fancy and store it to S3:

public function storeExcel() { return Excel::store(new InvoicesExport, 'invoices.xlsx', 's3'); }

Of course, these examples just scratch the surface. Check out the Github repo and official docs for more information.

As mentioned above, v3.0 focuses on exporting and v3.1 will focus on imports, but as of this time, there isn’t a planned release date yet.

A good event for Ariba. Progress on product, a new UX is always positive. Short on new announcements, capabilties - but that's the usual 'lull' with an executive transition. Padgett seems to get started and the next quarters will be important, next year's Ariba Live will be the full record card. On the concern side, SAP Ariba did not talk and show as much AI / ML and Blockchain that it talked about in 2017. Though the contract text analysis in the partnership with IBM has been delivered, it is not the broad uptake the technology needs in Procurement. Did anybody say software agents? But for now, a good event. The mix or more soft / feel good topics vs. product and customer news is new - and I am very curious to talk more to customers, prospects and partners to see how it was accepted.
