#or ALTERNATIVELY sometimes you’re hyping yourself up to speak in french and you get to the cashier and turns out they’re english too

being an intermediate french speaker and trying to speak french in quebec is like. you go up to the cashier and start speaking french. if they clock you as an english speaker they’ll just respond in english. or if you slip up and say “um” instead of “euhhh” they switch to english. or everything could be going well and as you leave the store you want to say “have a good day” but you shorten it to “good day” and in your high from carrying out the whole conversation in french you end up saying “bonjour” while leaving 😭😭

My House
Pairing: Bang Chan X Reader
A/N: This was slightly inspired by Chan’s rude cover of 2PM’s “My House” from the other day... I was considering a different setting but I thought this would be more fitting.
Hoping all is well.
-
“You look hot.”
You made eye contact with your best friend Felix in the floor-length mirror you and your roommate shared, smiling as you glanced over your body a final time.
“Can you help me decide on a pair of earrings to wear?” All of your allotted energy for fashion had been drained putting your outfit together; you couldn’t make one more decision.
When Felix stood up to walk towards your jewelry stash, you gasped dramatically, slightly scaring the poor thing.
“Forget about me, look at the legs on this one!” He was wearing a pair of tight black jeans that complimented his slender figure and making him look slightly taller than his actual 5’7” stature. A little bit of chest was exposed too, allowing for a tiny necklace to shine against his smooth skin.
Felix brushed off your comment with a nervous laugh. You were each other’s hype-man and had been for years, but that doesn’t make accepting the compliments any easier.
“You do look really good, though. The belt was a nice touch,” you reassured him, nudging his hip with yours to bring attention to the aforementioned accessory.
He nudged you back with another laugh and started leafing through the available earrings you had brought to school.
The two of you decided on a pair of silver hoops that you knew would cause regret in the form of tender red ears by the end of the night. Fuck it.
Both you and Felix were freshmen at your university and after spending what felt like years cramming for the final exams you had just completed today, it was a no-brainer when Jisung asked you two if you would consider coming to his frat house for a party to celebrate. The aspiring rapper was known for his crazy “gatherings” and while they may not usually be everyone’s cup of tea, a chance to unwind was desperately snatched up by anyone who was graced with an invitation.
“I still don’t understand how Jisung managed to charm his way into this frat.”
Felix shrugged. “One of the juniors heard his stuff on Soundcloud and snatched him right up apparently.”
“What?” You started walking backwards to be able to face your best friend. “Jisung never mentioned that to me.”
“I got it out of the cute guy in my French class, you know Changbin? He’s a rapper too. They’re thinking of making a rap trio for the showcase at the end of the year.”
“Who’s the third?”
“The junior. Name’s Chris or Chan or CB whatever-the-fuck… Jisung switches up constantly when talking about him.”
You turned back around, matching Felix’s pace as you trekked up the hill to the brick house.
“Felix! Y/N! So glad you could finally make it to one of these!” Jisung greeted, making a slight jab at how unfamiliar you guys were with college nightlife.
A drink was shoved into each of your guys’ hands as if Jisung was waiting for you before you were ushered into the living room.
Purple LED lights allowed you to see the absolute chaos that was this party. Empty cups discarded on the floor, at least three couples getting acquainted against the wall, and a haze of smoke that escaped the bathroom any time the door opened. You and Felix scanned the crowd  for familiar faces, not really sure who to expect.
Your eyes fell on the guy in the corner, typing away on a laptop and seemingly supplying the huge speakers with the music that was rocking your body. His fingers bounced across his keyboard, face scrunched in what must’ve been the cutest concentrated face you had ever seen. The lights made his hair look like a bright magenta color and the silver ring curled around his bottom lip shine.
You gulped as your eyes trailed up the rest of his arm. His white button-up was rolled up to his elbows, exposing his veins with every moment of his hands. The shirt just fit around his broad shoulders, stretching to do so in a way that left his collarbones available for your viewing. This guy’s skin was so pale that it basically blended into the fabric covering it.
His jawline was sharp, his nose strong, and his eyes were looking right into yours.
You spun around as quickly as possible to express your embarrassment to Felix only to find that your “best friend” had disappeared. You couldn’t help but smirk when you saw him practically cuddled into Changbin’s side on the couch, a muscular arm tossed around his waist.
Betrayal forgiven.
Knowing you couldn’t turn back around but also couldn’t continue standing there alone like an idiot, you took a sip of whatever Jisung had given you and pushed through the crowd of people. You hoped this would make it harder for the super cute DJ to find you again and remind himself of your pervy moment of weakness.
Finding yourself in the kitchen that was fortunately better lit, you strolled over to the stack of pizza boxes and started to look for one that wasn’t empty yet. Before your lips could meet the slice of pepperoni you had been graced with, a body was slammed into yours and the pizza slice was barely kept off the ground.
“Shit. Sorry, Y/N!” Jisung, a pretty girl clinging onto his arm, was already halfway across the room before you could string together the perfect insult.
You leaned back into the countertop in defeat, promising to get back at your clumsy friend later.
“Y/N, was it?”
You groaned internally, ready to face some college kid who was as greasy as the pizza in your hand. Thank god you hadn’t been able to take a bite, because you definitely would’ve choked once you saw who was talking to you.
“Uh, yeah. Hi.”
The DJ from before— you know, the one whose shoulders you were staring at?—was standing right in front of you, leaning on the counter to his side.
“I saw you looking at me in the living room earlier.”
Not one for subtlety, are we? “Yeah, sorry about that. I couldn’t put a name to your face and was trying to figure you out.”
The boy shifted so his back was resting against the kitchen counter.
“I don’t think it was my face you were looking at. At least, not at first.”
Your eyes dropped down to his arms that were still exposed, completely giving yourself away.
“You’re the one in charge of the music?”
The boy’s eyebrow quirked, unsure of where this was going. He nodded.
“What’s with all the Jisung I’ve been hearing? Are you a fanboy or something?”
The boy’s eyes scrunched and his plump lips formed a smile as he laughed at your assumption.
“Not quite. His voice isn’t the only one on these tracks.”
“I recognize Changbin’s too,” you admitted with a tilt of your head. “But the third…”
The boy stretched his arms out, a smirk on his face.
“…is you!” You finished.
You thought back to the conversation you had with Felix on the way to the party.
“You’re the guy with like… a million different names.”
Your ears were blessed with his laugh once again.
The boy stuck his hand out, “I’m Chan. It’s nice to meet you, Y/N.”
You shook his hand, a smile on your face to match his own. He squeezed your hand lightly before letting go.
The two of you found a spot on the staircase at the front of the house to chat, having to shift closer and closer together every time a couple rushed by you two to find an unoccupied room on the upper level.
“So, you run this thing? The frat?”
Chan, looking a bit shy, rubbed the back of his neck with the hand that wasn’t resting on your thigh.
“Not really. I mean, I play a part in picking out new guys but I don’t do it alone. My dad studied here too, was a part of this frat actually,” he nodded towards a class photo to his left, “so when I got accepted… he donated this building.”
Chan looked at you like forcing those words out of his mouth was the hardest thing he’s ever done.
“And… you’re helping pay it off by DJing at college parties?” You joked.
The boy next to you laughed, obviously relieved, and squeezed your thigh before speaking again.
“No, no… I just don’t like to waste time that I could be using to work on music. It used to be just me making shit on my computer but now that I have Changbin and Jisung by my side, I don’t want to keep them in the shadows any longer.”
Even in the dim lighting you could see how his eyes sparkled when talking about the other boys.
“They’re so passionate about it. Changbin can rap as fast as Jisung can get an entire song’s worth of lyrics on the page. I feel like an old man working next to them sometimes.”
You both cracked up at that.
After talking back and forth about your respective majors and comparing embarrassing stories of Jisung (or, J.One, as you learned from Chan). The new drink in your hand was long forgotten and still practically full, time with Chan was too precious to waste.
“You know, when I caught you looking at me a couple hours ago, I was relieved.” Chan confessed. “When you walked in the door with that guy… I basically had to peel my eyes off of you.” He glanced at your body pressed into his for emphasis.
“Do you know how hot you look right now?” He had leaned in close enough to whisper in your ear, his breath sending sparks down your spine.
His finger hooked itself in the belt loop of your jeans, teasing you with a slight tug.
Your hand came up to rest on his exposed chest. It slid from his collarbone down to the first button that wasn’t undone.
You used the slight leverage you had on his shirt to pull him closer to you, his head still tucked into the side of your neck. With a slight turn of your head, the two of you were kissing.
Chan’s lips were twice as soft as they looked and you dropped any doubts of him being a rapper when his tongue started moving against your own. One of his hands was wrapped around the back of your neck, holding you in place as his lips slotted against your own.
You pulled his body into yours, alternating with grips on his collar and light tugs of his curly hair to get what you needed.
Chan pulled away suddenly, lips full, hair disheveled, and shirt shifted completely out of place. In other words, anyone would be able to tell that the two of you were just making out.
“There’s a guesthouse out there,” he explained. “My room is in there since it doubles as our studio.”
He placed another quick kiss on your lips.
“What do you say? Wanna go to my house?”
You smirked, rewarding his perfect idea with a kiss of your own.

50 More Interesting Questions
The last list of questions that made the rounds sucked, so I (@cavern-of-bells) made my own list! I’ll fill this out myself later, but here’s the blank one to get the ball rolling. The rule is: fill this out and tag at least one person you’d like to know more about! Or just fill it out! Or don’t! Answer only some of them! Make up your own questions! “What kind of requirement is that”, you ask? A reasonable one! Who am I to tell you what to do? Anything goes!
1. What kind of food can’t you stand?: Applesauce. I can eat just about anything, and I’ll try darn near anything once, but applesauce slays me. IDK man, the texture just....*shudder* 2. If you could choose one minor inconvenience to never have to deal with again, what would you pick?: When your sheets do that thing in the middle of the night, and the corner comes loose and you gotta fix it when you’re all groggy or else just sleep on bare mattress? Drives me crazy. 3. Have you got any useless talents?: I play a mean hand whistle, and abuse it liberally to play the theme to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Also I can wiggle my ears up, down, and in circles. 4. If you could be really really good at one thing, what would it be?: I always wanted to be a dancer. Too short though, and never did it as a kid. Too old now. 5. Name a few people you think are extremely good-looking: Tom Hiddleston. Mila Kunis. Natalie Portman. Idris Elba. Cha Seung-won 6. What was your favorite way to pass the time as a kid?: Reading. I used to get in trouble for reading too much - I’d sit up in my window at all hours of the night, reading by the light of our neighbor’s porch lamp. The worst punishment my parents ever came up with was taking all the books out of my room. 7. What is something you’re proud of?: I’ve had a couple of short stories published in a literary journal. I also worked as an editor for one, briefly. 8. What’s one character flaw in people that you just can’t tolerate?: Being chronically late. It’s so disrespectful, and just says that you care more about yourself than others. 9. Do you consider yourself to be more of a leader or a follower?: Neither? I tend to do my own thing, frankly. I’m happy doing either though. 10. What kind of student are/were you?: I was always fairly good, though I have a real problem with procrastination.  11. Butterfly effect question! Has there ever been a seemingly minor decision you’ve made (at the time) that ended up having a profound influence on your life?: On a whim, I sent a Myspace (remember that?) message to my old dorm friend from college years after graduation, a boy who lived on the floor above me and who I spent most of my freshman year pining after his roommate. When we finally connected, ostensibly for coffee just to catch up, he asked me if I wanted to actually go to coffee, or if I wanted to take a chance on the ‘Mystery Option’, as he put it.
I chose the Mystery Option, and we’ve been together for 11 years now.
12. Name your most irrational fear/aversion: I hate anything related to parasites. Like, run screaming from the room if they’re in a movie or on TV. I still haven’t been able to watch any Aliens movie. 13. Are there any fictional characters you find especially relatable?: Jane Foster, from the Marvel cinematic universe. She’s earnest and awkward and passionate and smart, and I love her so, so much. 14. If you drink, what kind of drunk are you? Alternatively, what sort of person are you at parties?: I’m usually a happy drunk, who gets up to shenanigans.  15. Do you fall in love easily? Or does it usually take a long time for you to trust someone?: It takes me a long time. All of the men who’ve confessed to me have done so so? Fast? And I’m just...really? I never can reciprocate right away. 16. Would you rather have one close friend or 100 casual friends?: One close friend is worth a thousand casuals. 17. Do you consider yourself to be more of a slob or a neat-freak?: A bit of both. When it comes to certain things I’m a chaotic mess, and other things I’m a complete organizational neat freak. It’s mostly just a matter of how important it is to me. That being said, I can’t abide clutter for long. After awhile I lose my GD mind and have to straighten things up. 18. Describe a place (imaginary or real) that you would find incredibly cozy: An overstuffed window seat in an old Victorian manor, with a view of a rainstorm outside, with a pot of tea and a good book in hand. 19. Do you have kids? If not, do you want them someday?: I have 3. One is thirteen, one is six, and one is two. 20. What was your favorite book as a child? Beauty, by Robin McKinley 21. Name one thing you just don’t get what all the hype is about: 50 Shades of Gray. And all of the Transformers movies, those look awful. 22. Name one thing that you think is tragically underrated: Being alone. Driving a fast car on a warm summer’s night on a windy country road, with the windows down, radio up, just me and my thoughts and my hair loose in the wind. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. 23. If you had to be glued to a person for a month, real or fictional (who you have never met), who would you choose?: Barack Obama. I think he probably would make for fascinating conversation, and he’d handle the entire situation with grace and aplomb. 24. What’s something you’d like the chance to do someday?: Take a very specific trip in Asia - fly in to Sapporo, ride the trains and such south through Japan, and take a ferry from Osaka to Busan, to fly home from Seoul. We have tentative plans for 2019, let’s see if those pan out! 25. Do you typically speak your mind when you have a controversial opinion? Or do generally prefer to not rock the boat?: I tend to keep my opinions to myself, unless I feel pretty comfortable with the people I’m talking to. I don’t handle conflict well. 26. What’s the dumbest fad you’ve been caught up in?: Oh man, I tend to avoid most but...in the early aughts I had a terrible haircut, long in the front and super short and spiky in the back, and I thought it was so punk and cool. 27. What’s something you thought was cool as a kid/adolescent, but now cringe at yourself for?: See the above answer ^ 28. What’s a trait you consider to be very admirable?: People who can make small talk easily. My husband is one of those, and I usually just stand back and watch in awe as he makes anyone comfortable in about ten seconds flat. He’s a champion schmoozer. 29. Is there a particular kind of item people always tend to give you as gifts? (For instance, people always get you things with ducks on them because you like ducks, etc.): People always default to kitchen gadgets for me, and I’m 100% ok with this. I have the best stocked kitchen I know. 30. Do you speak multiple languages? Which ones?: Sadly, no. I can still speak a smattering of French and Spanish, but nothing resembling conversational fluency. 31. Would you rather live in the big city or the countryside?: Sometimes both. I love the outdoors and the silence and solitude of it all, especially a thick mossy forest of towering fir trees. (I blame being from the Northwest) But at the same time, I love the energy of a city and all the experiences you can have there. I’d die without new restaurants to try, or having a plethora of grocery stores to find whatever obscure ingredient I want from. 32. Has there ever been something you were certain you’d hate, but ended up loving?: Snorkeling. I am a passable swimmer at best, and deep water scares me, but there was just so much to look at! And TURTLES! I was too busy looking at everything to be even remotely nervous. 33. Do you mind being the center of attention, or do you prefer the spotlight to be on someone else?: Absolutely not. I’d rather crawl into a hole and die - I leave making a spectacle of himself to Mr. Otome, and I just watch with amusement from the sidelines. 34. Favorite holiday?: Halloween, all the way. We go big, decorate like mad, have a huge party, get hundreds of trick or treaters. I LOVE IT ALL. 35. Are you a more go-with-the-flow type of person, or do you need to have things planned meticulously?: I’m a planner, at least for the big picture. I can fudge the details but I gotta have a framework or I go crazy. 36. Is there something you loved so much you wish you could forget it and experience it all over again? (A tv show, book, series–anything.) : I wish I could experience Mass Effect all over again, from the start. I’d still fall in love with my awkward digital alien husband Garrus, I know, but it’d be nice to do it all fresh. 37. What hobbies do you have?: I cook and bake, obviously. I sew, do a bit of cosplay, and I knit. I read anything I can get my hands on, run semi-regularly, and also enjoy writing.  38. If you could have a superpower, but it was only mildly useful, what ability would you want to have?: The ability to find lost things. I’m not even talking Important Stuff like the Ark of the Covenant or Amelia Earhart - I’d just like to reliably know where the eff I put my car keys most days. 39. Something people are always surprised to learn about you: That I can sing so well. My speaking voice is meh and one of the things I like the least about myself, so when I do sing people are always shocked. 40. Something that took you way too long to figure out: That you have to live life for yourself. You can’t go about it deferring to other people’s whims or wishes - and there’s a time and a place to put your foot down and say, enough. There’s a difference between looking out for yourself, and being selfish.  41. Worst injury you’ve had? I’ve lived a pretty charmed life in this department. Maybe the time my little brother broke two of my fingers as a kid, smashing them with a rock. 42. Any morbid fascinations?: Serial killers and true crime stories. It’s awful and I cringe, but I love listening to those sorts of podcasts while I knit. 43. Describe your sense of humor: Dry and sarcastic. I’m the one who’s quiet for an entire conversation, and then comes in at the end with the cutting remark that has everyone both laughing and wondering where the heck I’d been the whole time. 44. If you had to be born in another era/place, which would you choose?: Honestly, as romantic as the past sounds, I know objectively how awful it all was for one reason or another. Whether it’s because health care was a joke, or women were treated horribly...but if I could have a perfect, romanticized version of the past, I’d say maybe 9th or 10th century Scandinavia. I love Vikings and Norse mythology. 45. Something you are irredeemably bad at: Opening beer bottles. I haven’t the foggiest clue why, but I always have to have someone else do it, or else I’ll end up wearing most of it. 46. Something that sucked but you’re glad you went through: My first marriage. It didn’t even suck for any dramatic reason, it was just a bad decision and a mistake for the both of us, a couple of dumb kids - but like all of the best sorts of mistakes I learned an inconceivable amount, about myself and life. And I got a pretty killer son out of it. I’d never trade a sad day of it for anything. 47. Would you rather have a really godawful ugly tattoo in a place that is only slightly inconvenient to conceal with clothing (upper arm, thigh, etc.), or the coolest, most beautiful tattoo ever in the middle of your face? (Neither tattoo can be removed or concealed with makeup, and the ugly tattoo will deeply offend anyone who sees it.): Ugly tattoo all the way, I think. I could always have it modified later maybe? 48. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist?: I think I’m pretty optimistic actually. Or maybe just realistic. I don’t get flustered or worked up over much, because I definitely tend towards the ‘I’ve done what I can - what happens now will happen and there’s no sense wasting energy worrying over what I personally can’t change.’ 49. What would be the most flattering compliment someone could give you?: Compliment me on something I chose, or thought, or created. Compliments on looks are meaningless, since they’re entirely out of your control. 50. Something you feel people often misunderstand about you: I’m always labeled the quiet one, and some people let that mistakenly translate to apathy or disinterest.
A lot of the people I’d tag were already done, but I’d like to see answers from @deathatintervals @catchthespade @amigoingbananas and @fooljshgirl

50 More Interesting Questions
Rules: fill this out and tag at least one person you’d like to know more about! Or just fill it out! Or don’t! Answer only some of them! Make up your own questions! “What kind of requirement is that”, you ask? A reasonable one! Who am I to tell you what to do? Anything goes!
Thank you for tagging me @theempresskaizer & @kakihoden! :D <3
1. What kind of food can’t you stand?: Anything fermented. Like, ew. Also brussel sprouts (Then again, I have yet find someone who can cook brussel sprouts “well.” :b)
2. If you could choose one minor inconvenience to never have to deal with again, what would you pick?: Public transit schedules. They’re so darn inconvenient (And yet I’m commuting for the remainder of my uni career. At least I’m saving money..?). -.-’
3. Have you got any useless talents?: I try to make use of my talents, so I’m gonna say no. :b
4. If you could be really really good at one thing, what would it be?: Taking (good & worthwhile) risks because I’m always so darn careful so I end up not trying new things sometimes.
5. Name a few people you think are extremely good-looking: ALL THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY I KNOW AND LOVE. <3 Oh, also Emma Watson, Gal Gadot, Shawn Mendes, Tom Holland, and all the other celebs I tend to fangirl about (I can’t name them all rn, haha sorry~. :P).
6. What was your favorite way to pass the time as a kid?: Singing all the Disney songs (Which I still do nowadays, haha~.). I would also read books, write my own stories, and act as if I was on a Disney Channel show (I was quite the Disney fangirl back in the day. xD)
7. What is something you’re proud of?: My friends who are just starting college/uni this year. Most of them are already setting up their dorms and getting ready for classes. They’re growing up so fast! :’)
8. What’s one character flaw in people that you just can’t tolerate?: Dishonesty. I don’t associate with phonies.
9. Do you consider yourself to be more of a leader or a follower?: I’m a bit of both. Then again, being a follower makes you a kind of leader: you essentially lead people to follow your leader, if that makes sense Okay I’ll shut up about leadership theory sorry y’all. :P
10. What kind of student are/were you?: The diligent one (but people often claim I’m the overachiever even tho I’m not always a straight A student lololol).
11. Butterfly effect question! Has there ever been a seemingly minor decision you’ve made (at the time) that ended up having a profound influence on your life?: Ohhhhh yes. This kind of thing has happened to me many times (In like the best ways possible, thankfully.).
12. Name your most irrational fear/aversion: Being alone/left out (Even though “I’m never really alone” ((Which I know I’m not. Hence the “irrational” part of this particular fear/aversion.)).)
13. Are there any fictional characters you find especially relatable?: Yup. Plenty of ‘em.
14. If you drink, what kind of drunk are you? Alternatively, what sort of person are you at parties?: I don’t drink... Yet. My Canadian friends are trying to get me to drink with them since I’m now legal in Canada but I’m scared heeeeeelp. :b I’m usually the wallflower if I don’t know anybody too well at a party. However, if I find people I’m comfortable hanging out with, I’ll stick with their squad throughout the event, talking, eating, dancing and taking pictures/SnapChats to our hearts’ desires~. ^-^
15. Do you fall in love easily? Or does it usually take a long time for you to trust someone?: Nope. I have to get to know the person before I “fall in love” with them, let alone having a crush on them. Which is why the biggest crushes I’ve had were on some of my closest friends. But I’ve never told them because I didn’t want to risk our friendships IDK I’M A NOOB WHEN IT COMES TO LOVEY-DOVEY THINGS. :b
16. Would you rather have one close friend or 100 casual friends?: One close friend. <3
17. Do you consider yourself to be more of a slob or a neat-freak?: Neat-freak. Definitely a neat-freak. xD
18. Describe a place (imaginary or real) that you would find incredibly cozy:
Both of these locations are places where I’d have more than enough room to move or think. ^-^
Outdoors: Somewhere near the sea, where I could feel the sand on my toes, hear the waves splashing onto the shore, smell the ocean breeze, and watch the orange sunset glowing along the horizon.
Indoors: An empty practice room. Wooden floors, large mirrors in front of the room, dance barres along the side walls, a few windows displaying the outside world, and a speaker/stereo system perfect for blasting the music around the room.
19. Do you have kids? If not, do you want them someday?: No kids atm, but I love working with them! Yes, I’d like kids someday~.
20. What was your favorite book as a child?: I read many books as a wee child. But one book I can clearly remember is Stellaluna. It’s an adorable story about a bat who discovers who she truly is thanks to both her adoptive and biological families (The former being a family of birds and the latter being a family of bats.).
21. Name one thing you just don’t get what all the hype is about: Fidget spinners. I’m still seeing people freak out about those things. Didn’t the trend die a month or two ago?
22. Name one thing that you think is tragically underrated: Myspace. *evil laughs despite the fact that I never had a Myspace account* :P Sorry I couldn’t think of anything else bahaha~
23. If you had to be glued to a person for a month, real or fictional (who you have never met), who would you choose?: I mean, I’ve never met MYSME’s 707 IRL, so I’ll stick with him And we can visit his space station, haha~ ^-^
24. What’s something you’d like the chance to do someday?: Act in a theatrical production. I haven’t done theatre in a year and I already miss it. T.T
25. Do you typically speak your mind when you have a controversial opinion? Or do generally prefer to not rock the boat?: I’ll definitely speak my mind if I’m well-versed in the topic and if I’m passionate about it. If I want to present a controversial opinion, I have to be sure that I can articulate my POV eloquently and professionally. I’m also more than willing to listen to the other side, as long as they fully know what they’re talking about (Frankly, I will not take any B.S. if I suspect B.S.).
26. What’s the dumbest fad you’ve been caught up in?: I’m blanking... Yeah, IDK, but I’m pretty sure I got caught up in some kind of dumb fad back in middle school. *shivers b/c I don’t want to relive those years*
27. What’s something you thought was cool as a kid/adolescent, but now cringe at yourself for?: When I was younger (like elementary/middle school-age), I dreamed of becoming a singer. In order to accomplish that dream, I joined my school and church choirs: however, that turned out to be a pretty toxic experience since almost everyone I was singing with treated every single practice and performance as a singing competition. Like, c’mon you guys: we aren’t on Glee. -.-’
28. What’s a trait you consider to be very admirable?: Honesty: I admire people who are genuine and true.
29. Is there a particular kind of item people always tend to give you as gifts? (For instance, people always get you things with ducks on them because you like ducks, etc.): Books (people know I’m a huge bookworm), clothes (b/c I’m usually too lazy/don’t have time to shop for my own clothes, LOLOL), stuffed animals (I’m a child at heart and I love cuddly & cute things), sweets (especially chocolate).
30. Do you speak multiple languages? Which ones?:
English is my mother tongue.
I apparently used to speak Tagalog fluently when I was very young, but then I stopped speaking that language once I started preschool; however, I’ve picked up some terms over the years, so I can sort of dissect my parents’ conversations w/ the other adults (”Yes, Mom, I knew that you were talking about my uni stuff with Tita *insert name here*.” :P), plus I’m going to take a Tagalog 101 class in Autumn Quarter, so I’ll (hopefully) learn how to say complete sentences instead of just the names of foods, holidays, and Filipino Folk Dances. xD
I learned Spanish throughout my high school career, so I’m okay in that department even though I haven’t practiced speaking/listening/writing in that language recently. I’m still fluent enough to help my sisters with their Spanish homework, so that’s something. :P
I tried learning some French, Japanese, and Korean through various language learning apps, but to no avail.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
31. Would you rather live in the big city or the countryside?: Can I choose like a little town instead? Big city: the countryside would be MUCH too quiet for me (Plus I’d be much too tempted to run atop every hill Sound of Music style and start singing at the top of my lungs - which would probably annoy a lot of people, myself included. :P).
32. Has there ever been something you were certain you’d hate, but ended up loving?: Giles Christophe a.k.a my Midnight Cinderella bias. Ironic, huh? xD <3 Also Jumin Han from MYSME. :P
33. Do you mind being the center of attention, or do you prefer the spotlight to be on someone else?: I will hide from the spotlight like I’m a friggin vampire unless there’s a damn good reason for me to be under it.
34. Favorite holiday?: CHRISTMAS!!!
35. Are you a more go-with-the-flow type of person, or do you need to have things planned meticulously?: If I’m in charge of scheduling something, then I MUST have everything carefully planned. If I’m leaving the scheduling to someone else, then I’ll just go with the flow~.
36. Is there something you loved so much you wish you could forget it and experience it all over again? (A tv show, book, series–anything.): My first trip to Hawaii: I’d love to explore the islands and swim in its oceans again.
37. What hobbies do you have?: Reading, writing, singing, dancing, listening to music, playing the guitar or ukulele, checking social media (JKJK :P), drawing/arts & crafts (If I’m EXTREMELY bored), playing video games, watching TV/YouTube, exploring places both old and new Yeah, I do too many things, haha~
38. If you could have a superpower, but it was only mildly useful, what ability would you want to have?: “Mildly useful?” (O.o) I guess the ability to learn things VERY quickly - like, master an activity on the first try. I actually have a friend with that ability, which has allowed him to almost effortlessly master almost every sport he’s ever learned: he’s basically a superhuman and I admire and envy him for his “superpower.” :P <3
39. Something people are always surprised to learn about you: My age: people think that I’m much younger than I actually am, mostly because of my shorter-than-average height and my baby face. I’m basically an adult stuck in a teenager’s body. xD
40. Something that took you way too long to figure out: How to apply the Unit Circle to various math problems eff you precalculus and calculus never again ugggghhhhh.
41. Worst injury you’ve had?: My broken heart (JKJK, sort of. :P) I got burned by the metal tip of a very hot glue gun. Thanks to that, I have a tiny scar on my upper right arm.
42. Any morbid fascinations?: Does watching playthroughs of horror games through YouTube count?
43. Describe your sense of humor: Clever/witty, sarcastic, sassy. Oftentimes unintentional: jokes will usually come to me naturally through conversation. If we’re close, plenty of embarrassing stories, inside jokes, and horrible puns will be part of our daily doses of humor.
44. If you had to be born in another era/place, which would you choose?: I’d want to be born in Canada, mostly because I’ve got a lot of family living up there, plus I’d love to live in a place that isn’t completely messed up rn. #SorryNotSorryAmerica *crosses to the Canadian border like a badass*
45. Something you are irredeemably bad at: LOL, WHAT’S A SPORT? :b
46. Something that sucked but you’re glad you went through: Freshman year of high school. I first moved to my new home that year, so being the new kid sucked for a while, but I eventually made some friends and found more opportunities to grow as a person (through writing and theatre).
47. Would you rather have a really godawful ugly tattoo in a place that is only slightly inconvenient to conceal with clothing (upper arm, thigh, etc.), or the coolest, most beautiful tattoo ever in the middle of your face? (Neither tattoo can be removed or concealed with makeup, and the ugly tattoo will deeply offend anyone who sees it.): Ugly tat. At least I’d have a place to hide it. xD
48. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist?: Realist. Leaning on the pessimist side. However, I do try to believe that things will get better, that there’ll be more bigger and better opportunities out there, etc. etc.
49. What would be the most flattering compliment someone could give you?: That I’m a hardworking and genuine person. Then again, I don’t do well compliments anyway: I’ll definitely blush and stutter and try to hide behind some kind of an object while complimenting you back. xD <3
50. Something you feel people often misunderstand about you: I’m often quiet and reserved when I’m meeting new people. Some may think I’m naturally calm and composed, others take it as slightly intimidating. But I’m just quiet because I’m awkward, plus I don’t usually start conversations. :b
Tagging: @princessofwysteria, @sukio-sakamaki, @allforthecrown, @o0w0o, @widzzicles, @rizosrojizos, and anyone who wants to do this! (I would’ve tagged more peeps, but I didn’t know if they had been tagged already. So please join in if you haven’t done this already~.). ^-^ <3

44. If you had to be born in another era/place, which would you choose? well I wouldn’t want to live in another era because they weren’t such fun times for poc’s. But If I could live in another place, I’d rather live in either Canada or France. Maybe Japan.
45. Something you are irredeemably bad at I can’t summarize that well without rambling.
46. Something that sucked but you’re glad you went through school. Even though it made my cry and my workload stressed me out I met my best friends there and more importantly I got an education.
47. Would you rather have a really godawful ugly tattoo in a place that is only slightly inconvenient to conceal with clothing (upper arm, thigh, etc.), or the coolest, most beautiful tattoo ever in the middle of your face? (Neither tattoo can be removed or concealed with makeup, and the ugly tattoo will deeply offend anyone who sees it.) I don’t want a tattoo ever, so the ugly one but like what’s so offensive about it??
48. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist? for a pessimist i’m pretty optimistic
49. What would be the most flattering compliment someone could give you? “you fight good”. uh i’m not sure. I don’t take compliments well so even if it was the most flattering thing I probably wouldn’t believe whoever said it and just awkwardly laugh and say thanks.
50. Something you feel people often misunderstand about you hmm people who don’t know me think I like talking irl. I’m more of a listener.
i’m only tagging two people bc I like to see them suffer with me but this is open to anyone who wants to do it

25. J Hus feat. Burna Boy - “Good Time”
I started writing something about how well this song encapsulates J Hus’s London upbringing, his Ghanaian heritage, and the current dancehall boom through it’s canny blending of Afrobeats, bashment riddims, and a just a sprinkle of grime…but then I realized that that is what’s interesting about the song, not why I love it. The reason it’s stuck in my mind is really simple: it’s a suave, unassuming earworm of the highest caliber.
24. Alice Glass - “Without Love”
I really can’t express how heartbroken I was to learn about the abusive relationship that existed during Alice Glass’s time in Crystal Castles, who were my entry point into the entire world of electronic music. But that sadness pales in comparison to how glad I am that Alice is now out of that situation, making art on her own terms, and dropping alternately eerie and whiplash-inducing Fuck You’s like “Without Love.”
23. Stormzy - “Big For You Boots”
The song that took Stormzy from the guy who was making charming videos with  his mum on a shoestring budget and getting tagged as “grime’s next big thing” to making arresting, big budget video epics and getting dubbed “the biggest thing in grime.” What a leap. And he did it while rapping about how “You’re never too big for Adele.”
(Oh and if I had made a Top 5 Pronunciations of 2017 list, his pronunciation of “boots” as “boooouuuus” would definitely be #1.)
22. The xx - “I Dare You”
Here’s where Taylor writes a really hacky paragraph by saying you should listen to this song and then ending it with, “I dare you.”
Or it’s where he just says that this song may be the perfect xx song, an ideal swirl of a silvery, romantic duet.
21. Drake - “Gyalchester”
There is only one way to improve this song.
Tumblr media
20. St. Vincent - “New York”
A few weeks ago, my aunt (who mostly attends Fleetwood Mac and Marshall Tucker Band concerts) and my sisters (who mostly attends Miranda Lambert and Kelsea Ballerini) somehow wound up going to a St. Vincent show together. They liked parts of it, but didn’t like others. (The fact that her “opening act” was the middling horror short she directed for the anthology film XX, for instance, was not well received.) And although they couldn’t remember the names of any of the songs they liked, I’m sure they liked “New York,” because I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to dislike “New York.”
19. Boy Harsher - “Motion”
You know that feeling you get when the blacklights sweep over skin as you’re on slinking your way through a German industrial dance club, on a mission to assassinate a double agent who crossed your secret government organization for the last time? Well, I guess I technically haven’t either. But I’ve listened to Boy Harsher’s song “Motion” so I basically have.
18. Chief Keef - “Can You Be My Friend”
2011 Taylor looks though the Future Sight Machine.
2011 Taylor: Chief Keef and Young Chop made one of the best songs of 2017? Nice! I’ll bet that’s one helluva headpunch of a drill track, right?
2017 Taylor: Actually, it’s a playful, romantic dancehall jam.
2011 Taylor’s monocle pops out.
17. Perfume Genius - “Slip Away”
You know how some songs can go from “I like this. This is good. This a good song,” to, “HOLY SHIT I LOVE THIS OH GOD WHAT YES THIS IS A MOTHERFUCKING SONG MOTHERFUCKERS,” in single pivot point? Well, “Slip Away” has the best pivot point of any song this year. If you’ve heard it you know exactly what I mean; if you haven’t, you will as soon as you do.
16. Amber Coffman - “No Coffee”
Even though I ranked other songs above it on this arbitrary and poorly defined list, I don’t think there’s been a song that’s made me happier this year than “No Coffee.” Though Amber made her name with vocal fireworks, her voice is still every bit the wonder in subtler, smoother settings like this. And when it’s paired with a chorus as utterly inescapable as this one, the result is pure contentment.
15. DJDS feat. Amber Mark and Marco McKinnis - “Trees On Fire”
After their album Stand Up And Speak left me cold, I was worried about DJDS’s transition from working with vocal samples to actually collaborating with singers. But after hearing the Jenga tower of R&B hooks and house shuffles that is “Trees On Fire” (and that Charlie Wilson collab from last year) consider any fears I had to be wholly dispelled.
14. Dirty Projectors - “Little Bubble”
There was no more aptly named song this year than “Little Bubble” a perfect, self-contained miniature nestled in the center of Dirty Projectors’ deeply petty and fitfully brilliant self-titled album. While most of that record revels in deeply specific personal detail, “Little Bubble” touches on something more abstract, the ultimate impermanence of all things, no matter if it’s a shadow, a relationship, or (as the video suggests) man’s place on earth. It’s all just a little bubble, for a while.
13. MUNA - “I Know A Place”
Dancing to pop music at a club is often used in films and television as visual shorthand for carefree joy, the sort of thing that people to celebrate happiness and success. But in the real world, it’s just as often something that people do to escape the troubles and fears that burden them. MUNA’s “I Know A Place” is expressed about that experience, dancing yourself free from whatever inescapably looms in the daylight. The result is uncanny: a joyful pop song that’s also a shoulder to cry on.
12. Lydia Ainsworth - “The Road”
Sometimes when I write these things, I hope that I can come up with some sort of perfect three-or-four-word summation of a song or album. But sometimes I encounter a description so perfect that there’s no need for me to even try. So, mad props to Lydia Ainsworth’s friend who described this song as “a marriage of Enya and The Weeknd.” As soon as I read that, I threw in the towel.
11. Cardi B - “Bodak Yellow”
If this list were based solely on which song I rapped along with the most during my commute, we all know what song would be #1. If this list were based solely on how dramatically a song increases the hype of any party that it’s played at, we all know what song would be #1. If this list were based solely on how likely a song was to come up in any given conversation I had this year, we all know what song would be #1.
…wait…
Did I just completely invalidate this list?
10. The National - “The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness”
Six notes. That’s all it took to announce that this was new kind of The National song. Sure, all of their hallmarks were there (Matt Berninger’s rich baritone, swelling strings, their brooding rhythm section) but there were also those six notes, a quick electric guitar riff, like an engine desperately trying to turn over. And when it finally does and Aaron Dessner rips into a massive solo midway through, the mold is shattered forever. “We’re in a different kind of thing now,” indeed.
9. Miya Folick - “Give It To Me”
On this list last year, I said that Mitski’s “Your Best American Girl” was the best soft-loud rock song ever written, so be aware of the import that the next sentence holds: Miya Folick’s “Give It To Me” should be the lead in to “Your Best American Girl” on your next mixtape.
8. Posse - “Horse Blanket”
The title track from Posse’s final album is a glorious contradiction: a slacker rock epic. A towering, laconic achievement for people who hate achievement, with ringing guitars that echo to infinity and dead pan vocals drifting through a duet. Then as the whole thing ambles aimlessly up the mountain, the guitar solo starts. And then the other guitar solo starts. And the whole thing tumbles toward nirvana.
7. Lorde - “Green Light”
A few years ago, I once jokingly handed out The Lorde Memorial Award For Most Infuriating Reaction™, to artists that I thought were fine, but that everyone else needed to just chill out about. While I still stand by that evaluation of the award winners (Are you still hyped about Raury?) I have come here to officially announce that I’ve changed my tune about the award’s namesake. Oh and also to say that “Green Light” is a delightful romp of a song.
PS: Clicking that Raury link will also let you travel back to a time when I had to explain who the Chainsmokers were before I railed at length about how much they sucked. Simpler times.
6. Haim - “Want You Back”
“Want You Back” aka the exact moment that Haim’s blend of 1970s soft rock and 1990s R&B finally (FINALLY) hooked TWG and he finally chilled out and finally got on the same page that like 99.9% of cool humans on the planet have been on for, like, y-e-a-r-s at this point.
5. The War On Drugs - “Strangest Thing”
Adam Granduciel’s m.o. as The War On Drugs has always been to take the classic rock of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and smear it across the cosmos.
“Strangest Thing” is when the whole thing goes supernova.
4. Migos feat. 2 Chainz - “Deadz”
Man, remember when Migos made fun, disposable, chintzy music that evaporated from your brain the minute it ended? Who would have ever thought that they’d eventually wind up making rap music that’s approximately a billion times more grandiose, baroque, and bombastic than their early recordings? Or that it would somehow also be about a million times more fun than anything they’d ever made before? It’s enough to make everything they made before this year seem like juvenalia.
3. Carly Rae Jepsen - “Cut To The Feeling”
How great is it that we’re just going to spend the next decade getting cast offs from the best pure pop album of the century, and then people are going to ask why they weren’t included on the album, and CRJ’s just gonna keep giving explanations that all kinda sound like “because it was too good…?” See you guys next year when some other terrible French animated movie snags a piece of undiluted pop gold for its soundtrack!
2. Creek Boyz - “With My Team”
A while ago, I had a conversation with a fellow student at my grad school about how his pick for the best movie ever is Forrest Gump. His rationale was that that film makes you feel every emotion at one time or another. Although I remain unpersuaded that Forrest Gump is the greatest film ever made, I do think he has a pretty good definition for great art. And “With My Team” does it one better. It doesn’t just make you feel the entire spectrum of emotions one by one; it gives you every single one at the same time. The joy of friendship. The sting of loss. Anger and resignation and resiliency. But the real secret of the song is this: those emotions hit so hard by the fact that the song is about sharing them. Humans are inherently social creatures and the only way that we can survive is by sharing them with our friends, with our family, with our team.
1.  Charli XCX - “Boys”
Why didn’t a get around to listening to a bunch of major albums?
I was busy thinkin’ ‘bout “Boys.”
Why did I forget to pay my gas bill in December?
I was busy thinkin’ ‘bout “Boys.”
Why isn’t my master’s thesis in better shape?
I was busy thinkin’ ‘bout “Boys.”
What was I doing at any given point this year?
I was busy thinkin’ ‘bout “Boys.”
