noticing in a somewhat outside-view kind of way that while I come at star trek with a lot of ships of all kinds, with MASH I really don’t “ship” anyone and I’m wondering where the distinction lies for me between going “xyz has interesting/funny/heartbreaking/etc tension of some kind, so I could ship it” in star trek and “xyz has interesting/funny/heartbreaking/etc tension of some kind, and I do not define that under shipping” in MASH
#it may also be the fact that with star trek i feel less confined by the word ship than with mash#i dont feel an urge to overexplain what i mean when i say whatever julian and martok had going on in the prison camp was 👀👀👀#or brunt and quark are gay on gay violence and would fuck or whatever#etcetcetc.#the word ship in some contexts feels more like it relates to romance and in others not unless you specify#and you know i can and do write about the dynamics in mash that interest me and i very purposefully do not use shipping tags#but it doesn't come easy to me to write little one-line things about dynamics i have to consciously not make disclaimers#(curiously it comes the most easily for me with margaret and hawkeye posts -- i think the ease of their mid-later seasons relationship#spills into how i feel about them/write about them)#romance and also sex as opt-in rather than opt-out within the word *ship*#when does ship carry an implicit hierarchy of relationship-structures and when doesnt it as question to myself#(also with tkk/cobra kai it's a third different thing#because I just DO ship the leads and a few others romantically and sexually)#(I'm not complicating the waters with that space so much)
