Clue Candlestick #2

Clue: Candlestick #2 IDW Publishing 2019 By Dash Shaw     Was it Miss Scarlet in the conservatory with the lead pipe?! In issue two of this mind-boggler based on the timeless detective game, suspicions mount and Scarlet's story is revealed. Still, more bodies will fall. Cartoonist auteur Dash Shaw deepens the mysterious, quirky, and colourful world of Clue!     Now no offense to Dash, and I have to say each I see or say his now out loud I keep thinking Dash Goff writer, but this isn’t usually something that I will normally gravitate towards. The artwork isn’t a style I am terribly fond of as I find it much too simple. However, that being said there really is something utterly charming about the overall story that we see which with the interior artwork translates into a book we can all relate to. Sure I feel a lot of Golden Girls influence here but that’s something that is probably more personal than deliberate. Regardless I have to say what we get as an end result is far from anything that I could have been expecting.     This is the story of Miss Scarlet. Her life leading up to her invitation to Mr. Boddy’s is laid out for us in some very interesting clips of her escapades. Granted we can assume that Scarlet is a very beautiful woman she’s always been portrayed that way so her role in this version of the story is one that Dash has decided to explore so creatively. This story is full of the characterisation that will either make you love or hate her and quite possibly both at the same time. Envy, greed, lust every last damn thing that you are warned against is present and accounted for and by god does Dash present it well.     The way the book is structured really is quite brilliant. How we learn about her and how Mr. Boddy knew of her paints such an interesting picture for us. It is one that should give people the chills when it’s depths are realised. From the past to the present to the way the dinner guests must traverse this story while being in the dark abut each other is being done in such a way that I found myself not only strangely fascinated but fully immersed and engaged in the story.     There is almost this kind of art deco style to the interiors for me. The people are crazy looking but for whatever reason it works extremely well. Plus that Miss Scarlet seems to be in a version of the same dress throughout the book is somewhat disturbing and yet has it creates her signature look as well. Why she’s one of those most sought after women is something we don’t see. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a very nice eye for storytelling. The colour work is just as odd and interesting and while you care stare at the pages trying to make sense of what we’re seeing we’re still in the story with her. There is something about it that I cannot help but say what the hell and be utterly charmed at the same time.     There are pages in this where there are activities and those were such a delightful surprise to me. It almost makes me think of the old Jack & Jill magazines in paediatrician's office. Dash has done something that not only surprised me but absolutely delighted me and he won me over completely. This is something that has a charm to it that you don’t notice on the surface but at some point within will it dawn on you that it’s happened. This is a perfect example why you need to step outside your comfort zone and you’ll find there’s a whole world of excellent comics (this one for example) that await you.
