I've largely been thrilled with the amount of sister content for Adaine and Aelwyn in Junior Year considering that Aelwyn's main arc was more or less completed last season and she could have easily been benched like so many other NPCs were this season. The only thing I was hoping would come into play but didn't was the Nemesis Ward. Even if it never comes up though, I still love it so much as a point of characterization for her. That action says so much about who she is as a person. That she would take a piece of magic specifically intended for evil and make it good in the same way that her protective magic which should have been good was twisted to be used for evil the first 18 years of her life? Mwah. Chef's kiss.

Fried Mush and Nug in translation

I'm doing some localization research and just wanted to share the French translation of the Green Eggs and Ham poem by Paragon Seuss (Haut Pignon in French) in The Noladar Anthology of Dwarven Poetry from DAO, because it's just as delightful. I think it's a great example of localization instead of direct translation, which is often necessary with poetry.

The entire poem in English and French, plus my literal translation of the French back into English, is below the cut, but here are some highlights and notes:

"Fried mush and nug" becomes "nug soup"

The concept of the poem is the same in both: a parody of Green Eggs and Ham, where someone is trying to convince someone else to eat something gross and they keep escalating the offers and refusals. But line-by-line the ideas are very different. Whereas the English has Mister Klug offering to eat the same dish in many ways (from a jug, with a bug, etc.) the French has Monsieur Brochard offering different types of food (duck, a bezoar, etc.)

(I don't recall ever reading Green Eggs and Ham in French so there may be additional translation jokes there)

The English rhyme is all words in -ug, whereas the french is all in -ard

"Are you on some kind of drug?" is ruder in French; the phrase could be at its most polite "you're a stupid idiot" or "arrogant idiot" but is really more like "you're an asshole".

The French has a sentence about hating the rich :D

Among the things Brochard offers to the other person are duck and leopard, which begs the question of how dwarves know of these animals. Are there Deep Roads ducks and leopards we haven't encountered before?

He also mentions a hearse, which could be some kind of carriage, but has never been mentioned in association with dwarves before lol

I wish I knew who wrote this codex and who did the localization because they're some of my favourite bits of dwarven lore. The Origins writing team was David Gaider, Eric Baudoin, Sheryl Chee, Daniel Erickson, Jennifer Hepler, Mary Kirby, Lukas Kristjanson, and Jay Turner; I'd bet on Hepler because she wrote a lot of the dwarven characters and questlines, but I don't know for sure. The localization was done by ExeQuo in France.

NB My French is Canadian so I may have missed some of the slangier bits.

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

Not exactly, I'd say. There's an upcoming story where I might have channelled into some frustration from personal events last year, but I don't do that as a rule. Back in the day when I was still attending wrestling shows, travelling all over the place... Well, let's just say the European tours in particular, watching the boys, were always very inspiring and I always ended up writing some fanfiction afterwards. ;-) Generally speaking, however, I truly believe that our writing says much more about ourselves that any writer probably cares to admit, me included.

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?

I'm not really sure to be honest as most of my writing is angsty on some level, I suppose. :-D "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was rather angsty and I keep meaning to go back to that ficlet and elaborate on it. "Left Unsaid", too, in some way. In the back of my mind I also still have a really unrequited, only one-sided love angle that I haven't even properly worked on yet, but if I ever sit down to write that one I fear my poor characters might be in for some serious angst. I guess I am also currently putting Shawn through the wringer quite a bit in "C'est la vie." LOL.
