#or to avoid having in universe characters perceive them as masc/fem and give ammo to people who hate trans rep in media

while I always appreciate seeing non binary characters in games, it's always so funny to me when other characters in universe just, magically know their pronouns, when they really shouldn't lol
they introduced a nb character in xenoblade 3, and everyone is immediately refering to them by singular they/them pronouns, when they never really did the same for other characters unless referring to a person clad in armor (which said character isn't, you can easily see what they look like) or in a similar situation where they can't reasonably assume their gender/pronouns
I guess it's better than said character being misgendered in an annoying way, but the fact that so many fictional characters have a functional non binary radar is still something I'm endlessly amused by
#said character isn't particularly androgynous or anything either#which obviously isn't a pre requisite to being nb#but would at least justify the characters who never ever interacted with them knowing to treat them in a gender neutral way pff#I would maybe guess it's a translation issue where in Japanese they use a language that's more Coded as non binary#but I've seen this in other non Japanese media#so idk how much this can be attributed to localization or it's the best alternative people got to avoid misgendering them#or to avoid having in universe characters perceive them as masc/fem and give ammo to people who hate trans rep in media#like you can literally have a character look at the camera and say they're trans and people will still refute that character's gender#so maybe it's for the best to be as blunt and unsubtle about it as possible
