The Many Benefits of Wearing Artificial Jewelry
Jewellery is a great way to accessorize any outfit, but it can also be expensive. The good news is that there are now many options for artificial jewellery that look just as good as the real thing. In fact, artificial jewellery has a number of advantages over its natural counterparts. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits when you buy artificial jewellery.
Tumblr media
 1. Artificial jewellery is more affordable. This is perhaps the most obvious benefit of artificial jewellery. Because it is not made from precious metals or stones, artificial jewellery is very affordable.
This means that you can buy multiple pieces to build up a collection, or you can simply buy a few key pieces that you really love and wear them often. With natural jewelry, on the other hand, you might only be able to afford one or two pieces due to the high cost.
 2. Artificial jewellery is more versatile. Another great benefit of artificial jewellery is that it is more versatile than natural jewellery. Because it is not made from expensive materials, you can experiment with different styles without breaking the bank.
You can also mix and match different pieces to create unique looks that are all your own. With natural jewelry, on the other hand, you might be limited to only wearing one or two pieces at a time due to the high cost per piece.
 3. Artificial jewellery does not require special care. One final benefit of artificial jewellery is that it does not require special care as natural jewellery does. You can simply put it on and take it off without having to worry about damaging it in any way.
This means that you can wear it more often without having to worry about taking extra care of it. Natural jewelry, on the other hand, might require special cleaning and storage procedures in order to keep it looking its best.
The Dazzling History of Artificial Jewelry
In a world where "natural is best," it may come as a surprise to some that artificial jewellery has been around for centuries—and prized by many cultures. So what is artificial jewellery, and how did it come to be? Let's take a closer look at the dazzling history of this fashion accessory.
Artificial jewellery has been around for centuries, with some of the earliest examples dating back to Ancient Egypt. In fact, one of the most famous pieces of Egyptian jewellery is the widows' tear—a type of earring worn by grieving spouses. These earrings were often made from colourful glass beads, which were affordable and widely available.
The glass was also used to make other types of ancient Egyptian jewellery, including bracelets, necklace set, and rings.
Throughout history, various cultures have had a love affair with artificial jewellery. In the 17th century, French women wore fake pearls made from fish scales glued together. Meanwhile, in 19th century England, Queen Victoria popularized faux flowers made from cloth and wire—a trend that quickly spread throughout Europe. By the early 20th century, American women were wearing everything from Bakelite bangles to jet-beaded necklaces. And in the present day, we see people sporting everything from cubic zirconia engagement rings to Pandora charms.
 Conclusion:
As you can see, there are many benefits to wearing artificial jewellery. From being more affordable to being more versatile, there are plenty of reasons why you should consider wearing artificial jewellery instead of natural jewellery. So next time you are looking for a new piece of jewellery, be sure to keep these benefits in mind!

INCREDIBLE REASONS WHY WE CHOOSE ORGANIC SKIN CARE ESSENTIALS
Having healthy, supple and radiant skin is our dream. Secret skincare routines are handed over through generations to maintain beautiful skin. The present-day scenario is different. The market is flooded with cosmetics made from chemicals. We can easily buy a chemical-based skin care cream across the counter. Or, do we make a conscious decision to use only organic skin care products? We are always careful about what we eat and drink to stay healthy. Similarly, we need to watch out for what we apply to our skin.
It takes extra effort to go for organic skincare essentials. Here are the top 4 reasons why it is worth researching skin care products made from natural ingredients before going for the best skin care and hair care products.
1. Organic skin care solutions have no parabens, allergens and carcinogens in the products. Instead, they are sourced and curated from the purest of ingredients that will rejuvenate and heal the skin naturally. We know that following a healthy lifestyle and diet is good for our well-being. Similarly, what we apply to our skin should be in tandem with the health goals we follow.
2. Ancient practices of Ayurveda have documented facts on how queens and princesses took care of their skin, hair and body with natural herbs, aromatic flowers and oils. India has a rich history of traditional skin care practices and has a prominent place in the global market.
3. Natural ingredients are safer for your skin and environment friendly as well. When we use natural products on our skin, there are no side effects and we do not leave harmful footprints on the environment. Switching to organic skincare, hair care and body care essentials will keep our earth safer, cleaner and chemical-free for our future generations.
4. Natural extracts from coconut oil, herbs, fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrition value and your skin benefits from them instantly. Taking our beauty routine back to nature, you will realize how your skin laps up pure, organically sourced ingredients for the skin to feel nourished. The results are amazing and sustainable.
There are many home remedies we can try with ingredients right from our kitchen counter. For example, a simple paste of gram flour, turmeric and yoghurt blended together to make a cooling, soothing face pack after a sultry day. Sandalwood, ubtans, rose water and essential oils can tone, exfoliate, cleanse, hydrate and moisturize your skin naturally.
Different countries have their own practices to keep your skin glowing. Argan oil from Morocco, olive oil from Egypt and minerals from the hot springs of Iceland have a therapeutic effect on the skin. Whether you have dry, oily or combination skin, your hair and skin need nourishment.
Going back to mother nature is the best way to give your skin the boost to glow healthily!
“CHEMICAL-FREE LIVING IS VERY VITAL BECAUSE YOU ARE WORTH It, YOUR SKIN IS WORTH IT!”

↳ Caro’s Note › decks out for the end of spooktober! here goes a different type of content aka my lil’ hobbyhorse. even if you’re new to tarot or find it quirky, i hope i can interest a curious soul or two. late september i gave in to temptation and pulled 5 cards for yoongi, asking what sexual style he could have. it was so much fun i did it for ot7 & want to share the results with you. besides listing the card names i don’t use tarot-specific terms so anybody can understand. i also scanned the spreads so you can see the imagery i take clues from. ignore that they’re labeled in german, it’s all in english below. enjoy!
Tumblr media
⇢ disclaimer ♡ this is subjective interpretation; there’s no guarantee for precision and things aren’t definite. divination relies on perspective, believing in tarot is a choice. the reading is for entertainment purposes only, all portrayals are fictive/speculative.
WARNINGS ⚠️ smut ahead, not suited for minors.
↪ kim taehyung
Tumblr media
⌈ THREE OF CUPS ⇁ romantically, more parties could be involved than just two. he might meet his partner in autumn. there will be a lot of upbeat and luxurious activity around sex, especially drinking and eating. his partner could feed him delicious fruits for dessert.
⌈ QUEEN OF PENTACLES ⇁ taehyung likes to be taken care of. sex might go down in the kitchen. his partner likely has the same vintage fashion sense as him, perhaps even more extravagant. taehyung could become shy but his lover will dissolve all doubts.

Understanding Classical Catholic Education
Note:  If you are here after requesting a free PDF copy of the book, check your email for a link.  If you’d like to read online, continue below.
Preface (below)
Introduction As we begin our study of the classical liberal arts, we will first consider the philosophy behind this ancient system of learning. We will see that modern educational philosophies are not alternatives to the ancient system but errors leading men away from sound philosophy and ultimately, true happiness.
The Arts in Ancient Israel In this second lesson we will connect two important points in the history of the classical liberal arts curriculum. We will consider the development of the arts after Moses up to the time of the development of the famous Greek schools.
The Arts in Ancient Greece In this third lesson we will consider the liberal arts curriculum as it continues to develop among the Greeks, demonstrating that the wisdom of the Greeks was in their honoring the ancient wisdom of Egypt and Israel. We must begin by recalling the testimony of Scripture that Solomon’s wisdom filled the nations. We will see that, while many modern scholars admire the Greeks yet despise the ancient religious traditions, the Greeks were themselves eager to preserve and practice the wisdom of the ancients.
The Arts in Ancient Rome In this fourth lesson we will consider the liberal arts curriculum as it continues to develop among the Romans, demonstrating that the Romans added the language of the curriculum and the art of Rhetoric. Once again, the essence of the liberal arts curriculum (the goal of which is true Wisdom) is not changed, but the beauty of the program is enhanced and the systematizing of yet another part is completed.
The Arts in the Hellenistic World In this fifth lesson, we consider the inter-testamental history so as to rightly understand the relationship between classical liberal arts education and Jewish society around the time of the life of Our Lord.
The Arts in the First Century In this lesson, we continue to follow the development of the classical liberal arts in the early Christian Church, and see the foundation of classical Catholic education.
The Arts in the Early Middle Ages In this lesson we will consider the next important page in the history of the classical liberal arts: education in the medieval world.
The Arts in the High Middle Ages Between the 5th and 9th centuries, Boethius, Cassiodorus, Alcuin and others gathered and preserved the wisdom of the Patristic age, but also sowed the seeds that would give birth to the age to come. The developments of this era were caused not so much by the conscious effort of the period’s scholars to bring in something new, but were forced upon them by the new challenges of the spread of Christianity through Europe. Most importantly, they highlighted the centrality of Dialectic in Christian education and set the stage for the flowering of Scholasticism.
The Renaissance & Reformation In this lesson, we will jump ahead to the first great assault made on classical Catholic education. This assault took place over a period of time, from the 14th through the 17th centuries and is contained within two events identified by historians as the Renaissance and the Reformation.
The Scientific Revolution In this lesson, we will look at the Scientific Revolution, which like the Protestant Reformation, is another manifestation of the dark side of the Renaissance. In this lesson we will get at the core principles of the Scientific Revolution, which have caused great confusion in the Church, have provided for several embarrassing moments in Church history and continue to cripple Christian people today.
American Public Education After the establishment of a federal government in the United States, the ability to collect taxes gave educators and lawmakers a means of ramping up this mission. In Europe, the increase in secular power that followed the Reformation inspired rulers to create public school systems for the indoctrination of children in the interest of social obedience.
The Dawn of Modern Education In this lesson we will look deeper into the philosophical and historical context of the American public school system to understand how it evolved from a Protestant endeavor to create an anti-Catholic American citizenry into a secular machine for cultural change.
Catholic Schools in America   The history of Catholic schools in America is only understood when we consider the schools in light of the history and experiences of the Church in America.
The Classical Liberal Arts Academy In this course, we have covered the history of education from the ancient Egyptians through to the Catholic schools of the 20th century. In this lesson we will look at the misguided efforts some have made to “repair the ruins” and the founding of the Classical Liberal Arts Academy.
The Goal of Classical Catholic Education What you should realize at this point is that our challenge in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy is not one of discovery or invention, but a challenge of restoring what was lost. Nevertheless, we must begin with a careful examination of the goal of the classical liberal arts curriculum.
The Means to True Happiness We learned that this true happiness is available to all human beings, but is available in heaven, not necessarily on earth. On earth, we have four objectives to focus on that will enable us to enjoy God forever in heaven.

Preface
We live at an amazing moment in history.  Society is violently divided and bring driven further apart by political controversies.  Technology is making schooling and publishing obsolete.  Catholic schools are closing, parishes are being consolidated, religious communities are selling their empty facilities, families are failing to raise children who remain in the Church.  Yet, in the midst of this decline, the restoration of classical Catholic education has begun in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy.
I was an ex-Catholic teenager who felt the distress of being left to the world.  I knew that the teachers and religious leaders around me were not sincerely interested in my happiness, and that I needed to find answers for myself.  I had a girl I wanted to marry, but I had no idea how to do anything as a Christian adult.
Christian churches, schools and families, are not supposed to produce lost teenagers like me, and Christian children cannot afford to learn the way I did—most of them never will.  The problem modern Christian teenagers face is not a joke, or “just the way it is”.  It is a systemic failure of Christian society.
My long and expensive search for answers led me to classical Catholic education.  I’ve been working on this research, all day, every day, for over 25 years.  In this book, I’m sharing lessons I wrote for a course for Christian parents in 2009—and I am sharing this book with Christian parents who want to save their children’s souls.
Classical Catholic Education
The greatest challenge Christian parents face today is that they have no access to the history that I share in this book.  This ignorance has left them vulnerable to false teaching by a “classical education” movement that is a living example of sophistry—pretending to be wise to get money.  We have to see through this and move forward with real, classical Catholic education.
We can fix these problems. We don’t need to become experts or earn degrees to to give our children the education they need.  Parents don’t need to become teachers because the teachers have already given us what we need.  We need to work together, as parents, to help our own children learn the truth, which their souls will recognize. Let’s get that work started—there’s no time to lose.
God bless,
William C. Michael Classical Liberal Arts Academy www.classicalliberalarts.com

I’m Still Waiting for the Map to Say Home’s a Week Away
I have this little lie that I tell myself constantly to inflate my ego. It goes a little something like this...
“Anything that I’m not really good at is only that way because I haven’t spent enough time to get good at it.” In other words, “If I give something enough effort and time to master then there’s nothing that I can’t become good at.”
Now’s not the time when I’m going to pick that line of thinking apart for how problematic it can be. (of which, believe me, I’m well aware) But I would like to share with you an example of something that proves unequivocally that I am completely mistaken by thinking this way. My proof that I can never be good at some things no matter how hard I try is... floristry.
So I’m actually good at somethings when it comes to flowers. I can identify wayyyy more different types of flowers than your average person. I can tell you a lot of basic flower care techniques. I can even put together an 8ft eucalyptus garland table runner in less time than most people take to make dinner. But when it comes to arranging flowers in a way that’s eye-catching and unique, the really creative part, it’s like my brain just shuts down. But then I watch my wife create (did I mention she’s a florist? - @wyldroot - shameless plug) it’s as if she’s playing 4-dimensional chess when I’m playing tic-tac-toe with side-walk chalk. It’s freaking art man.
People have this ability to create, some more elegantly than others, and it’s legitimately amazing when you think about it. We can transform things into other things. We can take raw materials, move them around, combine them, break them apart, and present them completely differently than they were before. That’s because we were made in the image of the creator. We are mini creators, using the materials that God crafted for us to subdue in order to make wonderful things.
But our world is broken and our creativity is affected by our fallen nature. Our sin distorts our power to create, and sometime when we make something that we think will be good it has the opposite effect on us or our neighbors.
After the Israelites were liberated from slavery in Egypt and crossed the Red Sea, they came upon a desert. Just weeks after being literal slaves, in Exodus 16 they begin to complain, saying that they’d rather be back in Egypt. “There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted” (v. 3). Never mind that God had promised to lead them into a land of abundance and a place of rest. Never mind that God had shown himself to be faithful and powerful as he rescued them from lives as slaves. None of that mattered, because was had been built in Egypt for them was familiar. At least they new where they could get some stew for dinner.
In contemplating sabbath rest and everything that comes with it, one of the recurring themes is sabbath being a miniature Eden in time. Eden, being the “cosmic mountaintop” (as put by Tim Mackie of the Bible Project) is the result of the kingdom of God existing here on Earth. It’s the goal. Not a place somewhere in our past, but a destination in our future. It’s our place of rest, which is promised to believers of Christ in the same way that the promised land was promised to the Israelites.
We want Eden in our deepest heart of hearts, so we try to make our own versions of what we think it could be. I do it by customizing my iPhone home screen so that it looks super clean and original, the Egyptians did it by forcing the Israelites to build the pyramids for them. Our broken creation creates a distorted Eden. People end up creating the antithesis of what God’s designed for us, but when it’s taken from us we look back on that broken thing that we made and declare that it is actually the Eden that we want to return to.
It’s so easy to look at the actions of the Israelites and call them big dumb dummies for acting the way they do in Exodus 16. But I do the same thing they did in every time I turn away from what’s good for me spiritually for what’s comfortable for me immediately. Every time I spend 4 hours a day on my phone, every time I distract myself all night with Netflix, every time I get too competitive at a board game, I’m running back to the false Eden that I’ve built for myself.
Some people have alcohol, some people have popularity, some people have their online image. I have a need to prove that I’m better at something than someone else. They’re all the same thing, a place where I can tell myself that I’m getting filled up. It makes me feel better. It’s my place of rest and abundance. Yeah, no. At least not in any way that’s going to last.
I wonder what other false Edens I’ve made for myself. I wonder if I’ll ever really be able to leave them all and never go back. At least I know that the Israelites finally listened to God enough to make it to that place of rest and abundance. Hopefully I will too.
In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling. - Exodus 15:13
P.S. If anyone got the Wonder Years reference in the title of this post then we need to be best friends forever

🎉[HAPPY NEWS]🎉 #JewelieBday2020⠀
Tumblr media
Dear Jewelie, following your amazing “Happy News” reports, this year we also want to celebrate your special day by sharing our “Happy News” back to you!  📰
WISHING YOU THE HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY!  🍰 🎈
- Your worldwide Co-MYV family from Planet Earth.
--------------------------------------------------------
From: Aunty Ku Country: Malaysia Dear my lovely Jewelie~ I have a son one year younger than you, thus, seeing you grow healthy and happily makes me happy. Like a cotton flower, you bloom beautifully and continue to bring happiness to my heart as I wait for the flower to turn into a boll, and then into a bur that reveals the cotton fiber.
Tumblr media
You probably didn't know this, but Malaysia is not a country where people believe the cotton plant can grow commercially. My country focuses more on rubber tree and palm oil tree. Therefore, planting cotton trees is a little bit strange to Malaysians, especially on layman's side. However, the cotton tree is a quite a resilient type of plant. At my home, given enough nutrition and water and suitable soil, it can live all year long and bear fruits with lots of quantity twice a year! And they have lived in my garden for almost two years now! I watch them grow, learn about their sicknesses, and learn most of the insects and critters that visited them, eat them or made them as their nesting ground or home. Discovering new things, seeing new creatures is also my own kind of happiness.
Tumblr media
You see Jewelie, sometimes happiness doesn’t come instantly. Sometimes you have to wait for it patiently, invest your time, your energy and your financial resources to make your dreams come true. However, there will be times when happiness doesn’t come, when though you have achieved something, sometimes it came when you have some sense of relief and security. Your heart is at ease, as some people would say.
However! Some happiness can also be bought thru shopping. Like this one here:
Tumblr media
This is takli. It is used as a tool to spin fiber into yarn. From the yarn thread, we can either crochet it, or knit it, or weave it to turn the yarn into fabric for clothing items or household items like a blanket, cushion cover, and other stuff. I couldn't find it anywhere in my country as spinning the cotton fiber and turn them into yarn is also a strange practice in my country. I've been waiting for this little guy for almost two months since I last ordered it. Due to covid19, postage has been delayed. And finally 2 days ago (14/10/2020) it arrived safely at my home
That is all I wanted to share with you today. Happy birthday Jewelie.
May you grow into an amazing person, whom love and cherish her parents until the end of their lives, and achieve all of your dreams. May life is kind to you and provide you enough.
Sincerely yours,  - Ku Shairah Jazahanim -16 Oct 2020

🎈 HAPPY NEWS 🎈
Hello, princess!
"ありがとう" is a universal word that brings people a little happiness.
In the shop an old woman said to me, "I want that item there."
I handed it to her and she happily said "ありがとう" over and over again. It made me smile too.
When a kind little action makes someone else happy, it makes me happy too. It's always in our lives. And we can all be happy if we don't forget to say "ありがとう(Thank you)" to each other.

From: Becca Country: USA
Jewelie,
Hello Jewelie! My name is Becca and I am from Tucson, Arizona. I am 21 years old and am a senior here at my local university, the University of Arizona! I am also part of our school’s marching band, which we traditionally play at our home football games. Sadly, this year though, we are not allowed to play at any of our games because of COVID-19 and our sports conferences not allowing us or fans to enter the stadium.
This being said though, one bit of ‘good news’ that I would like to share with you is that we have been able to schedule our 67th Annual Band Day virtually AND have it available for people nation-wide since it’s online! Band Day is an event we traditionally hold in-person at our football stadium and have around 40 high school marching bands from around the state compete. This year will be a little different, seeing as it will be held virtually and they cannot compete, however it will be equally as exciting! Especially seeing as we can still share our passion for music and the marching arts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope this finds you very well, and I hope you have a wonderful birthday! You deserve the best birthday ever, and the love you receive every day! <3 <3

From: Maura Country: USA
Happy Birthday Jewelie! Since I know that the environment is important to you, I wanted to share some HAPPPPY NEWWWWWS about the environment in honor of your birthday!
“Singaporean Government Plans to Plant One Million Trees by 2030”
The government of Singapore has announced a plan to plant one million native trees by the year 2030, with the goal of helping endangered species thrive and ensuring that every resident of Singapore lives, “no more than ten minutes from a park”. Although Singapore is a small nation, their ecosystem is rich and precious. By planting these trees, they will provide habitats for “numerous birds, reptiles and plants” which may face extinction. These trees will also help fight pollution and improve air quality for Singapore.
Tumblr media
I think that the Singaporean government has a great idea, and I hope that other governments follow suit, and create even more plans to help our planet!
Wishing you a joyful birthday full of happiness and love! From your CoMiyavi Auntie, Maura (News Source: https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/singapore-to-plant-1-million-trees-bringing-parks-to-people/)

From: Betty Country: Italy/Ethiopia
Hello Jewelie,
Here is a CoMYV aunty writing to you from Italy, but the happy news I want to share with you is from my home-country Ethiopia (somewhere  in the Horn of Africa).
I also did some research like you & this news was something that made me happy in this past weeks. Following sustainable development & clean energy, Ethiopia is now on the final stage of the long awaited start of “The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam" on the Blue Nile.
Tumblr media
It is set to become the largest hydropower plant in Africa, providing renewable energy for many people, and helping them to greatly improve their daily life. This made me really happy and hopeful for the future of my country. It was big celebration in Ethiopia too, also because the rainy season this year helped this first stage to be completed in a shorter amount of time. They saw it as a good sign from Mother Nature!
Once we will be able to travel again safely, I hope you will keep visiting many places around the world, noticing the beautiful diversity that also connects us. Remember that you have all of us, a bunch of comyv family ready to welcome you.
Happy Happy Birthday to you, wishing you just happiness. መልካም ልደት
CoMYV love from Betty/Kanmisa
(News Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/interactive/2020/grand-ethiopian-renaissance-dam-egypt-nile/) -------------------------------------------------------- From: Sarah Country: USA
Dear Jewelie,
I want to wish you the happiest of birthdays. Thank you for participating in the Ishihara family lives, and for always sharing such HAPPY NEWS with us! Your heart is so big and you are such bright light in this world, bringing so much joy to all of us!
I have a bit of personal “happy news” that I wanted to share with you, and hope it puts a smile on your face - recently, my family adopted a puppy! She is a sweet girl we named “Lucky”, because we are lucky to have her, and she is lucky to have a home now. Every day she is growing big and strong, and she is a super smart dog! We enjoy teaching her tricks like “sit” and “paw”, and she really likes to play fetch with her ball.
Tumblr media
Some interesting facts about American Pit Bull Terriers: they are super friendly and have a goofy personality; they’re great as therapy and emotional wellness dogs; they have a great sense of smell and are often used for search & rescue and other sniffing jobs; they are very muscular and athletic and can jump very high; they are wonderful family dogs and used to be known as “nanny” dogs because they love children so much.
Tumblr media
She is bringing lots of joy to our family since we are all working and learning from home this year. I think we also bring her lots of happiness by giving her a warm and loving home.
I’m thankful for the virtual connections we all have in these times, and I look forward to the day that friends and family can celebrate and enjoy time together again. Please take care, stay safe, and keep smiling! Remember, we are always under the same beautiful sky!
Happy Birthday Jewelie! ❣️
Much love from your CoMYV Aunty, Sarah --------------------------------------------------------
We hope you keep looking for HAPPY NEWS every day!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEWELIE!

Tumblr media
Turning up the collar of her cream colored wool coat, Hannah hurried down the crowded sidewalk towards the little flower shop on the corner. It had taken some smooth talking, along with the promise of a glowing online review, but the owner had come through for her. “Be right there,” a frail voice called out when Hannah tumbled into the little shop. A few minutes later a petite elderly woman with owl like eyes and a white top knot appeared from behind a curtain, a smile on her wizened face. “How might I help you?”
“I placed an order for Hannah.” Tucking her lips between her teeth, Hannah waited with baited breathe. 'Please don't have sold my flowers, I know its Valentine's Day and I'm late getting here but those flowers are important,' she thought, her heart constricting at the thought. The recipients wouldn't know whether she brought a single flower or a full dozen each but Hannah would know. She'd made a promise to herself and come hell or high water she would honor it.
“Ah yes!” The elfin lady's face lit up. “Five dozen red roses. I have them in the back.” Without another word, she ducked behind the curtain. Moments later she returned, five beautifully arranged bouquets carefully set upright in a wooden crate. “Thought this might make it easier for you,” she beamed. “Must some very important people for you go through all this trouble.”
“The most important.” Emotion constricted her throat. It never got easier. Someone had told her that it would but they had lied. 'Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry,' she silently chanted as she handed over her credit card. Two hundred and fifty dollars on flowers would hurt, and she would be paying on them for months, but they were the only thing she could do for the people she loved. In an ideal world she would have been able to select the perfect gifts and enjoy the excitement on their faces when they opened them, but Hannah had learned and accepted that there was nothing ideal about the world in which she lived. It was a cruel, lonely place.
The florist offered her a gentle smile, her gnarled fingers raising in a quick goodbye when Hannah hoisted the crate into her arms. “Do come back.”
Hannah murmured that she would before ducking her head and carrying her crate of flowers out the door. The quiet, gravity of how she was spending Valentine's Day weighed on her as she made her way towards the older Toyota she had purchased with a prayer and a thousand bucks Victor had loaned her. She carefully set the crate in the passenger seat, wincing when she glanced at the time on the dash. There was only two hours before her shift at the coffee shop. Her heart screamed that it wasn't nearly enough time while her mind reminded her it was the perfect amount of time. It wasn't good to dwell where she was headed.
Saint Michael's looked the way it always did. A picturesque cathedral that looked cozy despite its size, and air of welcome about the cemetery tucked next to it. Sniffing and then clearing her throat, Hannah gently gathered one of the bouquets in the crook of her arm. She murmured a greeting to the groundskeeper and Widow Harrington before focusing on the headstone to the left of the statue of Saint Michael himself. “Happy Valentine's Day Jonathon,” she said softly, crouching before the marble slab that was etched with her brother's basic information. Birth. Death. Loving Brother and Son. And only a dash to represent the life he had lived. “I know, red roses on Valentine's Day is so contrived but hey, I wouldn't be your annoying little sister if I didn't intentionally do things to piss you off.” She squeezed her eyes shut, willing to the tears to disappear. It was a useless plea. The salty drops were already running down her cheeks. “Your friend Zig put in an application at the coffee shop,” she whispered. Crouching, she placed the bouquet in the urn attached to the headstone. “I told him I would put in a good word for him. He was always nice. A little hot headed at times but nice.” Her fingers shook as she fluffed out the arrangement, shifting the stems until they looked the way she wanted. “I'm supposed to hang out with this girl Kaitlin and her roommates after work tonight. We're going to try to make it to the midnight release of that new wizard movie. It's more your kind of movie then mine but...I told you I would try and I'm trying.” Taking a deep breathe, she laid her palm across his name. “I love you Jonathon, and I miss you more and more each day.” She blinked back several tears and let out another huff of air. “Don't forget to look after Eleanor, Thomas, Clarissa, and Simon for me. They're our family now too.”
Clearing her throat, Hannah stood and hurried back towards her car. There were those who thought she was crazy for wanting to spend Valentine's Day wandering from cemetery to cemetery, leaving expensive flowers that would wilt and die. What they thought didn't matter. Valentine's Day was supposed to be about love, about reminding people how important they were and even if it didn't make sense to anyone else, what she was doing made sense to her. During the thirty minute drive to Braidwood Manor she went over the things she wanted to tell the Waverly's. She'd uncovered so many things that they would have wanted to know and it sucked that she couldn't actually tell them. On New Year's she'd tried. She'd let herself be conned by some gypsy who swore they could commune with the dead. Hannah might have bought into it if the woman hadn't gone into some spiel about their peaceful deaths. Murder and suicide were never peaceful. 'Stop thinking about that,' Hannah ordered, blinking back tears as she turned her car off the main road and onto the seldom traveled lane would take her to the family cemetery where Eleanor and her siblings were buried. 'Remember your promise. You're only going to focus on the good.'
“Happy Valentine's Day,” she called out, her voice echoing in the woods that surrounded the small plot. “I tried to get a different color for each of you but the florist was only able to promise red, so...I'm sorry Thomas but you're going to have to get over having the same as Simon.” She walked around the car to retrieve the crate from the passenger seat. “I have some news that will make you smile Clarissa but first...” Hannah stopped in front of the first of four identical headstones. Eleanor Waverly. She dropped to her knees and traced the name with the tip of her finger. 'I should have said yes,' she silently sobbed,' when you offered to stay I should have been selfish and said yes.' It had seemed too good to be true, nobody got a second chance at life. Or did they? Hannah found herself questioning that more and more. She'd read some things, met some people, specifically an Egyption antiquities dealer named Kamilah and her  girlfriend/assistant Lily, that made her think maybe there was more to life after death than, well, death. “I discovered something you would find interesting. There's a Waverly Hall at Hartfeld. I had forgotten all about it because I'm not an English major. I did a little digging and it turns out the funds to build it were donated by your father! Since you...none of you...had the opportunity to attend college he had a hall built in your honor. There's even a plaque with your names on it.” Shifting slightly, she reached for a bouquet and laid it at the base of the headstone. “I wish I could give you these in person. I mean, if you were here I probably would have done something a little more personal like baked a cake or made your favorite dinner.” She paused, closing her eyes. “I should have told you that I loved you,” she murmured. “I should have been brave, like you, and just...” She shook her head. There was no use in dwelling on what she could not change.
“Clarissa,” she choked out, scooting on to the next head stone. “I found out the most fascinating thing. Do you remember that boy you were telling me about? The one you had a mad crush on but never had the chance to tell?” Reaching back, Hannah dragged the crate towards her. “I think he might have a crush on you as well because...” smiling sadly, she placed another bouquet near Clarissa's headstone, “...he had a daughter named Clarissa. I tried to find out more information, like did any of his ancestors know how his wife and him came about that name...and in the process I got to actually meet your namesake! She's an elementry school teacher in Northbridge. She says her father named her after a dear friend of his that died too soon. He didn't forget you Clarissa. He made sure you were remembered.” As she had done with Eleanor's, she traced Clarissa's name, her heart tightening with each letter. Her hand fell away and she made herself move on to the next headstone. Thomas.
“I'm not sure if you heard me telling Eleanor about Waverly Hall at Hartfeld, but that isn't the only memorial on campus. My friend Kaitlin is a music major and every day she practices piano in the Thomas Waverly room. Your father did that for you...just you.” The crate was almost empty, save for the two bouquets for the boys. It hurt to pull out the flowers, to lay them in the dirt that covered where Thomas's body rest. “When I found that out I had to tell her about you. What an amazing musician you were and how you probably would have become famous if you hadn't died so young.” It was hard to say what Thomas's musical future would have been but Hannah liked to think he would have become a household name. “And Simon,” she forced herself to lay the last of the flowers against his headstone, “I found your insect collection in our science department. College students marvel over it and the fact that it was built by someone so young makes it even more awe inspiring.”
Rising to her feet, Hannah struggled against the sob tightening her throat. She had known this would be hard, had thought she was prepared for the onslaught of emotions, but like so many times before she'd been wrong. “I miss you,” she whispered, her eyes welling with a fresh onslaught of tears. “I miss you more than you could possibly know.” Sniffling, she took a deep breathe and let her eyes wander from headstone to headstone. “I...I have to go now but I promise I'll be back soon.” She took a shuddering breathe, whispered her love once more, and then made her way back to the car. If she hurried, she would just make it to work on time and then after..after she would try to pretend her heart wasn't shattered in a million pieces. 'Who knows,' an all to familiar voice whispered on the wind, 'maybe you'll find love again.'

The Twelve Brothers
“The Twelve Brothers” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, from The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, translated by Jack Zipes. Read online.
youtube
There’s so much happening in this tale. Parts of it overlap with “White as Milk, Red as Blood” from the von Schönwerth tales. Other parts are almost Oedipal in nature with a father ordering the executions of his sons.
A king has 12 sons and decrees that if the 13th child is a daughter, all 12 of his sons will be killed. There seems to be some discrepancy on the motivation of the kind from version to version. In Jack Zipes’ translation in The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, the king doesn’t want a daughter and seems to be ordering the deaths of his sons to spite his wife if she so contrary as to produce a daughter. However, in The Great Fairy Tale Tradition, another version which was also translated by Jack Zipes’ says that the king wants his sons killed so that his daughter will inherit everything. It seems the Brothers Grimm themselves changed this tale somewhat from edition to edition of their collected tales.
Regardless, the brothers flee to the forest where they live either in a cave or in an enchanted cottage depending on which version you read. They agree to slaughter any girl that shows up because all of their troubles have been caused by a girl. One day, though, little sister finds out about their existence and goes out looking for them. She finds only the youngest brother at home, and she convinces him to both spare her life and to let her live with her brothers and keep house for them. This works for a time, but then she picks 12 flowers from the forest, and that turns her 12 brothers into ravens. She is told that the only way to change them back is to not say a word for 12 years (or a mere 7 years in the later version).
The commits to the plan to save her brothers. Meanwhile, a king comes along and falls in love with her, takes her home with him and marries her, silent treatment and all. The king had a cruel mother, though, who spoke ill of little sister on every occasion and eventually wore the king down into believing that his wife was guilty of some treachery. Luckily, by the time he decided to have her put to death for her imagined crimes, her 12 years were up. Her brothers transformed back into themselves and showed up at the last minute to rescue her. She was able to to finally speak up for herself.
And the wicking mother-in-law was boiled in oil, of course.
The differences between the two versions of the tale are interesting. In the later version, the youngest brother is named Benjamin, which draws a clear parallel between this story and the Biblical tale of Joseph being sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers. Is the sister a Joseph figure? Perhaps partially. She does restore her brothers to their former lives in time, but instead of being wronged by them as a child, she is the reason for their displacement twice. She then has to pay penance over time in order to save them.
The tale has its share of true villains but the lesson here is in the importance of paying penance for the harm done to other inadvertently or unintentionally. This is one of life’s difficult tests that few people could pass.
