As much as I wanted to mix the powders with almond milk, bananas and other ingredients to make a smoothie, I needed to have a control in order for me to test the powders fairly. I did not want other ingredients masking the true flavor and texture of the product. This is why I would have the protein powders with water only. I chose all chocolate flavored powders as another control for the taste test to compare them all fairly… and because chocolate is delicious!
Experiment: I tried a different protein powder each day for 6 days in a row, rated each powder on a scale of 1-5 (1 being poor, 5 being excellent), and gave an honest review of the taste and texture of each product.
Results:
1st place: Plantfusion Complete Protein, Chocolate. 5/5. It was just so tasty! I really enjoyed the flavor and thought it had the right amount of sweetness. This was the first powder I tried and was expecting much worse due to a general distaste of protein powders among customer reviews online. It mixed really well and was enjoyable overall.
2nd place: This Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein, Chocolate. 4/5. It was also really good! It is hard to explain but it may have had a slightly more “sticky” texture and less chocolatey flavor than Plantfusion but I may have been mistaken. Overall, it tasted great and I would be happy to have it again.
3rd place: Amazing Greens Protein Superfood, Chocolate Peanut Butter. 3.5/5. This one was decent. The texture was not that gritty and it went down smoothly. The flavor was sweet but subtle. The peanut butter flavor addition was a nice touch.
4th place: Vega One All-in-one Nutritional Shake, Chocolate. 3.5/5. This one was a bit chalky like the Sunwarrior powder but the flavor was better. It was sweet with hints of both fruity and chocolatey flavors.
5th place: Whole Foods Plant-Based Nutritional Shake, Dark Chocolate. 3/5. I was not really impressed by the flavor. The chocolate flavor is really subtle. The powder was slightly gritty but not the worst in regards to grittiness.
6th place: Sunwarrior Warrior Blend Organic Plant-Based Protein, Chocolate. 2/5.  My first reaction was, “Oh yeah, that’s foul!” It definitely is grittier than the other powders and it has a weird taste. I adjusted to it somewhat after the first few sips but it was still just tolerable and not good.
Conclusion: I would definitely buy the 1st and 2nd place powders again. All of the protein powders succeeded in filling me up and making me feel more energized, but I found that the flavor and texture of the Plantfusion and The Garden of Life protein were superior. A bonus is that they both are sweetened with stevia and have very little actual sugar. They both taste great but I do not have to worry about intaking too much sugar from the powders. I am excited to buy these powders again and try them in smoothies and other delicious recipes. I also would have them with water alone again since they taste great and mixed so smoothly. Since many protein powders are available in vanilla as well, I will try vanilla flavored powders next!
Notes: I usually would have the protein powders shortly after waking up in the morning (after my hot water and lemon). I would still would have a light breakfast such as cereal, oatmeal, or toast & almond butter after the protein drink. This way, I consumed some protein, carbohydrates, and fat, in order to have a good balance of macronutrients to start the day. I used to feel hungry a couple hours after breakfast but the addition of the protein drink made me full for much longer and energized for the day ahead. On a couple days, I had the protein powder in the evening when I was really hungry before dinner. Then I would have a light dinner and would feel satiated for the rest of the night.
The reason why I picked all vegan, plant-based powders instead of whey protein or anything else is because there are numerous benefits to having a highly plant-based diet. The powders I tried contain protein from nutrient-dense ingredients such as peas, quinoa, hemp, flax seeds, and more. Also, whey comes from dairy, and I find that dairy can sometimes cause me an upset stomach and skin breakouts. Therefore, I try to avoid dairy when I can. I did a lot of research online before buying the protein powder packets and made a list of brands that I was interested in trying. Then, I went to the nearest Whole Foods and picked out the powders that were available in a single-serving packet. I did not do any research on the Whole Foods brand protein powder prior to purchasing it, but it had the nutritional profile I was looking for so I threw it in my cart.
There were also products that I am interested in but were not available at Whole Foods.
