lemme get that good daedra lore >:3 with a 2, 6, 10, and 19 !!
Hot steaming plate of Daedra lore coming right up @majorasnightmare! Sorry for taking so long with this one. Orin and Daedra's relationship is one I seldom talk about so it's nice to really dive into the doomed siblings relationship.
2. What was their relationship with Orin like immediately before the tadpole lobotomy? Was Orin sure in her decision, or did she regret what she was going to do?
There was a lot of tension between the two of them because Daedra could feel that the day was approaching and knew Orin was going to try to kill her soon. But felt that Orin wasn't ready yet. Orin had also grown increasingly envious of Daedra, despising the fact that everyone loved her and Daedra didn't even appreciate the adoration and worship that she got. She didn't think it was fair that even after all the work she had done, no one likes her, nobody cares about her, and she can feel Daedra's shadow constantly casted over her. She did start to grow irritated with all of Daedra's lessons, reminding her over and over that she isn't good enough when Orin knows that she is good enough and she is owed acknowledgment for the accomplishments she has made so far. And she was going to prove to Daedra that she was good enough, she wanted to surpass the master.
And as far as Orin was concerned, she did succeed. Although Orin did not realize that Daedra had planned the ambush and was counting on Orin doing what she did, she saw it as a personal victory. And she wanted to rub it in Daedra's face, constantly reminding her over and over and over that she was just as good as her. No, she was better than Daedra. She took out the Dread Ambusher and now believes she deserves that title because she earned it.
After the dinner party and claiming Minthara for herself, Orin was having her fun torturing Minthara down in the mind flayer colony. Daedra beginning to stir awake in one of the pods made Orin less sure of her success because Daedra was still alive. Running on pure adrenaline, realizing that she was still alive, Daedra did try to flee. But Orin gave chase and stabbed at Daedra some more, blinded by rage, envy, and an overwhelming sense of failure. Daedra did scream out, trying to fight back, but Orin just kept stabbing, screaming at the drow for making her feel so pathetic and useless her entire life. She blamed Daedra for her own mistreatment by Bhaal, feeling that Bhaal only looked down on her because Daedra looked down on her and if she could just kill Daedra, then maybe daddy would love her and that's all she wants. She just wants someone to love her, to like her, and tell her she is good enough because Daedra never would.
After returning to Baldur's Gate and becoming Chosen, Orin did take enjoyment and amusement from every report Kressa had sent back to Gortash. She reveled in the fact that Daedra was suffering. She took pleasure knowing that she was in complete, eh heh, absolute control over Daedra. And then her confidence shattered when she learned that Daedra had been put on a Nautiloid, and then that Nautiloid disappeared. The day she learned that Daedra was indeed still alive sent Orin through a whirlwind and any sense of accomplishment came crumbling down. Daedra always made her feel like a failure, but the fact that Daedra is still alive, in control of her faculties, killed Ketheric, earned the Slayer, AND had stolen Minthara from her was proof that she was a failure. Everything she had accomplished in Daedra's absence, Daedra had very quickly undone in a matter of weeks. And to make it worse, Daedra was made into a fucking idiot and still managed to be more successful than Orin could ever dream.
6. Does your Durge consider Orin a sibling? Do they think of her as family at all?
No. Daedra acknowledges that they are related by blood, even if that relation is diluted and a little merky with all the incest stuff. Daedra already has a family, but they are dead and buried in Menzoberranzan and does not care to have another one. She never comes to consider Sarevok, Orin, Bhaal, or any other Bhaalspawn as family.
This isn't to say that Daedra didn't care about Orin, because she did. She didn't love Orin nor did she harbor affection, but knew her contingency plan to free herself from Bhaal was dependent on Orin. She did see herself as Orin's personal mentor, grooming Orin in the same way the headmistress from Arach Tinilith had groomed her (and I'm just going to let you look up who that is...). From her vantage, she did see a bit of herself in Orin and recognized almost a little bit too late that she created a little chaos machine, one much much more chaotic than she is. Daedra had to learn the painful way on how to control herself and keep her own urges in check when she was young. But Orin didn't care to control the urges and indulged in them, making it much harder to control Orin or to teach Orin control. Not to mention, Daedra already has a century of experience over Orin and had much more time to learn, while Orin is practically a child in her eyes even when fully grown. Daedra was also very calculated in her defiance, but Orin was nothing but rebellious for rebellions sake. Daedra was classically trained on how to raise a cult, but she was not trained on how to raise a person and she royally fucked up with Orin.
10. What did your Durge really feel about Orin’s art?
Daedra will never say it, she will never admit it, but she actually does really like Orin's art. She sees Orin's art as an extension of herself, and a way to express what she feels what she cannot say. It is something that Bhaal cannot force and cannot control, similar to how Bhaal cannot truly break Daedra's connection to Lolth no matter how hard he tries. It meant that Orin was creative and capable of thinking outside of the box, something other Bhaalists just do not do. Many Bhaalists walk the line and rarely stray from what Bhaal, or even Daedra would say. Orin was different, constantly challenging everything and she expressed it in her art as art in of itself is an act of rebellion. She was constantly demonstrating just how much she stood out from all other the other cultists which is a big no-no amongst cults. Cults HATE individualism and that's what Orin insisted on being. Now, chaotic rule breaker Daedra would normally appreciate someone being a chaotic rule breaker, except it was her own rules that Orin was constantly violating and it pissed her off. It is one of the many reasons why Daedra saw Orin as the only true threat amongst the Bhaal cult because Orin was always going to do whatever the hell she wanted and knew Orin had the potential of becoming unstoppable.
19. Does your Durge remember anything of Orin between waking up on the nautiloid and meeting her in Act 3? Do they recognise her in Moonrise?
Before she was put onto the Nautiloid, the Absolute was learning how to erase people and was in the process of slowly erasing Daedra's mind, fracturing her psyche. But it didn't erase everything entirely before she was moved onto the Nautiloid. When Daedra landed face first on the beach, just minutes away from dying, the only thing she saw in her mind was Orin's eyes. She saw the rage in Orin's eyes, and the tears streaming down Orin's cheeks. She could not remember why because the Absolute erased it, but she could recognize that this strange woman was angry at her. And then Shadowheart came along and healed her, causing her brain to rewire itself. Shadowheart's healing was the true death of the old Daedra, and gave birth to the little chaos goblin many of you have come to love. But those old memories still linger around in her mind because the Absolute didn't fully erase them.
When she sees Orin in Moonrise, Daedra doesn't recognize Orin necessarily. But she does remember Orin's eyes. She remembers the rage and the hatred that was directed towards her. But Daedra, having issues with her short-term memory and object permanence, quickly forgets this the moment Orin is out of her sight.
#one of the reoccurring themes of this game is the cycle of abuse and how many of the characters can either break the cycle or continue it#but daedra is someone who has already perpetuated that cycle and she *did* abuse orin - which in turn led to orin abusing minthara#she mistreated and abused orin in the same way her headmistress from clerical school mistreated and abused her#(which is a really really really funny and ironic cycle of abuse once you realize who the head mistress of arach tinilith is...)#daedra never tortured orin like orin tortured minthara though to make that clear#she ridiculed orin - she slapped at orin - she yelled at orin - she was harsh and cruel and held orin to an absurdly high standard#she needed orin to be perfect so that orin could fit her plan - but orin was never perfect enough for her#orin was always a failure in her eyes and it made her more anxious about using her to get away from bhaal#she made orin feel like shit - she made orin feel insecure and unsure of herself - she ruined orin's confidence#daedra ruined orin's ability to feel and express love properly because former lolth-sworn daedra had love beaten out of her#i love daedra - she's my babygurl - but orin repeatedly stabbing her over and over in a blind fit was deserved#she did have it coming - and orin betraying her and usurping her title is the most drowic thing orin could ever do
