"Minthara doesn't even feel bad about the grove raid and killing all the tieflings."
Do you feel bad about killing all the goblins? No? Then you can shut the fuck up about how Minthara feels about the grove raid.

Cults & Love
Tumblr media
I had a very interesting comment under one of my fics and I've been mulling it over for the past few days. Here is what the commenter said in regards to Shadowheart's Sharran path:
Just because someone embraced loss doesn't mean they can't love. Minthara herself is a great example (although not sharran, but drow culture is rather similar), she has lines about how much she loves and respects her mother, but still plans to kill her.
The point that they make is entirely accurate! Shadowheart has demonstrated numerous times over that she is so full of love and compassion. Even when she goes down the route of Mother Superior and drops you down to FWB, she still cannot let you go. Minthara even has a line to Gale about how "love is the strongest thing that anybody can ever do" and how she does not ultimately see it as a weakness. Minthara is so much more emotionally guarded than the rest of the companions, whereas Shadowheart tries to distract you or turn your attention away from her emotions because she is painfully aware she's bad at hiding them.
The thing is though, cults don't actually try to prevent you from feeling love or any emotion at all, they need your emotion. If anything, they redirect who you display that emotion towards and restrict who you are allowed to express it to. So it isn't that Shadowheart and Minthara cannot feel love, but more that they do not have permission to express love to anyone that is not The Idol.
A very common practice within Lolthite culture is how drow are sometimes ordered by Lolth herself to kill their lovers, literally as a display to loyalty and devotion to Lolth. Why? Because Lolth does not want her followers loving anyone but herself. Things like love have a tendency to make people defect from the cult and The Idol, so it needs to be heavily restricted and directed. This is how I know that Lolth did directly order Minthara to kill the Vandree Priestess and that Minthara did love her. She wants love to be associated with violence, that to love anyone who is not Lolth is to kill or be killed.
Your first interactions with Minthara in the game revolve around violence, ie the grove raid. If you choose to save the grove and knock her out, you committed an act of violence against her which causes her to be wary of you (cause you literally assaulted her). And yet, in spite of that assault, she still comes around to loving you anyway because which of her lovers hasn't hurt her? If you raid the grove, well, you committed a horrible act of violence towards other people and it really turns her on. It is how she determines that you are a potentially worthy lover because she has been groomed her entire life that love and violence are one in the same. Where when she is ready to commit to you, she wants to read your mind for violent intent because that is what she expects to happen when she loves someone, and she's tired of it. She's tired of love that has been intertwined with violence. You have shown her that it is possible to not have that kind of love. And she wants it.
Shar on the other hand simply hates everything that is good in the world to spite her sister. But she isn't stupid, she knows how people work. She knows it is not actually reasonable to force people into a constant state of depression or have them pretend that they don't feel feelings. If anything, she provides nihilism as a means of coping with their emotions, rather than having them actually address them. She doesn't want her followers to properly deal with their emotions, she wants them to silently fester and grow. She didn't take away Ketheric's grief over his loved ones, she needed Ketheric's grief and took it to its most extreme to get him to do what she wanted, but to also keep him aligned with her. I also talked in a previous essay how Shar used Viconia's crisis about losing her way of life to keep Viconia in line.
Things got tricky with Shadowheart because she had nothing really in her life that was ultimately negative, and that's all cause Viconia kept wiping her mind. The wolf incident was only intended to make Shadowheart feel she owed her life to Shar, but there was really nothing that drove her to Sharran worship. Shadowheart didn't have anything that needed to be solved. The same commenter also brought up in another comment on why would Shar keep Shadowheart's parents around only to have them be tortured. It was all intended to manufacture a crisis for Shadowheart, to make her associate love with pain and guilt. DJ Shadowheart killing her parents is the catalyst that perfectly brings Shadowheart around, in which she says that it is better to be a blind follower. Because loving Shar doesn't hurt, but loving other people does. I have my own personal theory where if Shadowheart remained in a relationship with you, like Lolth, Shar would order Shadowheart to torture and eventually kill you. It is not a coincidence that between Ketheric, Viconia, and Shadowheart, Shar needed all of them to be drowning in grief to keep them under her thumb.
Shar is not against her followers feeling emotion, she is simply very particular on who it is shown to. She does not want her followers to love anyone but her. She wants every positive emotion that anyone could feel to be felt towards her and only her. We see Shadowheart's wound flare up whenever she expresses empathy towards children, animals, or the downtrodden. But we don't see the wound flare up when Shadowheart is speaking adoration towards Shar. We see Shadowheart hesitate throughout the entire game about being expressive to you, but she does not hesitate to tell you just how much she loves Shar. Shar does not care if Shadowheart feels love, she only cares when Shadowheart loves someone who isn't her.

The fact that the noblestalk is medicinal and can recover one of Shadowheart's memories is a pretty clear indication that whatever Shar and Viconia did to wipe her mind is leaving behind brain damage.

I can never quite get enough of "good only" players who use the knock out exploit to romance Minthara, only to turn around and complain that her romance feels "incomplete". Yeah, probably because you missed the most critical part of her romance that is locked behind the grove raid! Her spicy scene is not what is important, it's what happens after the fact that is.
The moment where her mask unravels and shatters. Where you are the first person in a very long time to see the real her. Where she puts herself in your arms because for just a brief moment, she feels some semblance of safety, something she hasn't felt for centuries. How she begins to express doubt in the Absolute, her experiences, and herself. Where she is completely unable to recognize who she is or the things she has done, because the Absolute has stolen her mind and her body. Where the Absolute amplified all her worst characteristics while suppressing the good and reasonable ones. Where you were the first real choice she has ever made in a long time, a choice that she is completely sure she made for herself. A choice that makes her realize how little she has had all this time. A choice that makes her realize that she actually enjoys the silence of the Absolute because it has been nonstop noise in her head! You gave her peace, you gave her comfort, you gave her security, you gave her silence. You were the choice that begins her Absolute deprogramming. When you come save her in Moonrise, she prays to you because you are the only one she has faith will answer. She sees you as her savior, her god. Because if not you, who else?
And you miss ALL of that by skipping the grove raid. Don't complain that her romance feels incomplete, when you chose to not complete it!

Aight, got a new one for you The First Thrall → Chapter 1: The Forest
Nightwarden Minthara Baenre has been tasked with tracking a weapon that threatens the success of the Absolute. As she gathers her party, she is given a new drow warrior who has recently been repurposed by the Absolute.
It is another AU, except Daedra has been enthralled by the Absolute and is being recruited by Minthara just before the events of Act 1. Not sure how far I'll go with this one cause I have no real plan, but I did bring out some of my I Want This One depravity.
Enjoy!

Lol, not the only canon interaction between Daedra and Naadja being Daedra telling Naadja to unironically get fucked and then summoning a demon and watching Naady get bred.
I kinda like Daedra doing like a little informal crash course on demonology with Zafyna. Demons aren't particularly Daedra's wheelhouse, but I can def see her giving Zafyna tips on how to deal with demons once they have been summoned, since Daedra is constantly being bothered by Fel literally all the time.
WAIT! Phyrnei is 1 year younger than Daedra. And if Phyrnei and Naadja went to Arach Tinilith at the same time and had a rivalry, then could it be that they were there at the same time Daedra was? Did all of our girlies go to school together?
Get @arach-tinilith on the phone right neow! I need to know what year Phyrnei and Naadja enrolled in school.

So, Daedra was born in 1338 and I have her enrolling in Arach Tinilith around 1357, which would have made her 19. I know that's pretty young for a drow to enroll, but she was an out of control serial killer and the Inquisitor who caught her said she could either learn to use her skills to serve Lolth, or die. Daedra chose not to die.
Daedra would have graduated around 1407ish, but she lingered around the school. She adamantly refused to join any noble house and she was the headmistresses little "apprentice". So she did live on campus for quite a while and would roam outside from time to time to do her little Priestess duties, but would return. She was not really an instructor, but she was well known by the students and some did come to her for lessons and advice as she was one of the few Death Domain clerics around. It was also bizarre to have a Priestess there not come from a noble house and not join a noble house.
Daedra does not end up fleeing the Underdark until she's around 120ish, so she would have lived at Arach Tiniltih for about a century. So, it sounds like by the time Naadja, Zafyna, Phyrnei enrolled, Daedra was already done with her primary education. Daedra was a aloof and quite the loner so it is genuinely possible that the three girlies might not have run into Daedra. But I feel most people at Arach Tinilith would have known about her given her long tenure there without being a formal instructor. Not to mention, she was the pupil of Quenthel Baenre and that would have most certainly gotten the attention of some aspiring young Priestesses who would want to be in her position.
WAIT! Phyrnei is 1 year younger than Daedra. And if Phyrnei and Naadja went to Arach Tinilith at the same time and had a rivalry, then could it be that they were there at the same time Daedra was? Did all of our girlies go to school together?

Cults & Crisis: The Exiled Drow
Tumblr media
As I go through these cult dissections, one of the hardest things to realize is that just because someone left a cult does not mean they cannot find themselves in another cult. It also does not mean they won't walk back to the cult they left. One of the people that I am following to learn more about cults says, "You cannot reason someone out of what they did not reason themselves into." Cults do not operate on logic, they avoid it like a plague. Cults latch onto emotion and they twist it to placate their members, to make them dependent on the cult and The Idol. For some, they were born into cults and molded by it, and the cult is all they know. This applies to Minthara, Lae'zel, Orin, and I will consider Shadowheart as well since she was dragged into one as a child and her life before the cult was wiped from her memory.
Cults take advantage of those in crisis, and sometimes generate crisis to keep their members dependent on the cult. Cults provide community, a sense of belonging, a home, a family, answers, and a higher/divine purpose. Cults figure out whatever the person is missing and they fill the void, they find whatever is wrong and promise to solve it. They present themselves as a panacea, the cure to someone's every ailment. Once you're in, cults fracture your emotional regulation to keep you in. They put you through constant ups and downs. They create a problem, freak you the hell out, and then give you a solution. Whenever there is pain, the cult is there to alleviate it. They quite literally reshape your brain and manipulate how you see the world, where the only thing that is the truth is the cult, and The Idol.
Viconia was a Sharran in the previous games after having left the Underdark and Lolth. On the surface, it seems strange. Why would someone who rejected and defied Lolth go to Shar? She should know better! Well, no, she doesn't, thank Lolth for that. For some back story, Viconia was once given an order to sacrifice a child (not her child, but someone's in House DeVir). She refused the order. This caused quite the kerfuffle which resulted in Viconia needing to flee the Underdark.
All of this put Viconia into crisis. She lost her entire family, lost her house, lost her home, lost her god, lost her purpose, lost everything she has ever known (sound familiar?). It isn't as if the surface has been kind to her either. She has been harassed, prosecuted, hunted, and assaulted. The surface isn't kind to drow. She understandably would have been filled with fear, grief, despair. Those are all Shar's brand. Viconia being a former Lolthite already has a poor relationship with her own emotions. She was prime for manipulation from Shar, and Shar sure did have a field day with Viconia. That's how Shar gets people. She comes to them while they are in crisis, promising that "all this pain, all this loss, I can fix it all for you. Don't you want the pain to go away?" And for some, Shar does steal their memories and so they do not recall their crisis. But for the rest, Shar gives purpose to their pain. In Viconia's case, Shar twisted Viconia's pain so she would do Shar's bidding. Shar did the same thing to Ketheric.
I know I'm a broken record on this, but Lolth and Shar are similar gods and fond of the same things: darkness, death, treachery. So as a cleric of Shar, Viconia easily falls into old habits as Shar filled the void left behind by Lolth. Shar gave her a purpose, a place to belong, a home, family. Unfortunately, Shar also tasked her with destroying her enclave in Waterdeep, claiming they were all full of traitors. A rough, but easy task for Viconia to accomplish. In an old life, she would have been expected to slaughter her own family on a moment's notice. The drow like to play it off, like murdering your family is just a normal day. She even says that she had doubts about their treason because they had always shown loyalty to her. She put her faith in Shar, and believed that what she had to say was the truth. But there is no way it didn't fling Viconia back into another crisis and looking for answers. But it's okay, all she has to do is go to Baldur's Gate and do it again. She'll get her home back, her family back, her purpose back.
One day, Viconia is tasked with retrieving a young Selunite who is going through her own rite of passage. The father of the young child found out that Viconia and her Sharrans were in the woods, ready to snatch his daughter. So he goes full lycanthrope to protect her. But the girl doesn't know her father is a lycanthrope and thinks it to be a wolf chasing after her. She is scared and running for her life, thinking she is going to be mauled to death. The young Selunite trips to the ground, blood tricking from the new wound on her face. The wolf approaches, trying to warn his daughter, but all she sees are sharp teeth primed at her throat. And who swoops in at just the last second? Viconia and her Sharrans, saving the frightened little girl from the big bad wolf. Telling her she and Shar will keep her safe, that the dark is nothing to be afraid of, and that others (Selune) were leading her astray and into danger. Only she and Shar can protect her, and they will show her the way.
Viconia invented a crisis to trick a young Shadowheart into going with her and joining Shar. And no matter how many times her memory was wiped, this is the one memory that remained. This crisis is the foundation of Shadowheart's Sharran worship. Her first memory is one of Viconia and Shar coming to her when she needed help, solved her crisis, gave her a place to belong. They gave her a family where she forgotten she had one. The cult, Shar, Mother Superior, they became her family and all she had ever known. Viconia made it so that Shadowheart felt that she owed her life to Shar.
Unlike Viconia, Minthara did not choose to reject Lolth, but she was exiled all the same. She lost her entire family, lost her house, lost her home, lost her god, lost her purpose, lost everything she has ever known. Twice. Once with Lolth, and then again with the Absolute. The Absolute was ripping her brain apart, targeting her emotional core. She thought she was going to die. She was in a crisis. She prayed and begged for someone to come save her because she knew she couldn't save herself. And who swooped in and saved her? You did. You came in while she was in crisis and you promised her, "I will save you from all that troubles you, and I can keep you safe from the biggest threat of your life." I used to say in previous posts that Minthara sees you as a "god figure" to replace Lolth. Now, I am sure that is exactly what is happening in her head. You and the vagabonds become her family, her home, her purpose. You are The Idol. And if you're Durge, your existence as a demigod reaffirms her faith in you as a god-figure. Babygurl still thinks she's in a cult, but it's centered around you.
Yes, Minthara is actively in the process of deconstructing things, but still engages in cult like behavior with you. She has an undying loyalty and devotion to you, literally willing to die for you, and her oath keeps her to it. Her oath is literally a divine vow to you. She does not believe you would ever hurt her because she has faith in you, and you as The Idol promised that you never would. That, and she has no reason to believe that you ever would hurt her, she has no reason to believe you would ever lie to her, use her, or manipulate her. She is very selective of genuine criticism of you to where it mutates into cognitive dissonance if you do something she doesn't agree with. She has to find reason in the things you do that she doesn't understand because The Idol cannot be wrong, so she twists her own logic so that you are right. She is pretty quick to insult the others, but she would never dare to insult you because when you're in a cult, you. do not. speak ill. of the leader. The moments where she is actually afraid of you, she either internalizes her fear, or expresses sexual arousal as if that will keep her safe from you.
This cult thinking could lead her to repeating certain habits that you would think she would have learned a thing or two about. But her previous cults literally and actually prevented her from learning these things. Ugh, why is she pushing Shadowheart towards Shar, is she stupid? She's in a cult. Ugh, why is she pushing Durge towards Bhaal, is she stupid? She's in a cult. Ugh, after everything she has been through with Lolth and the Absolute, she's such a hypocrite to want you to claim the Absolute. Yeah, SHE'S IN A CULT!
You cannot reason her out of what she did not reason herself into. She will say to your face you cannot change her mind, and no amount of evidence will change her mind. Her desire for power is not driven by reason or logic, it is driven by emotion, it is driven by fear. She says it plainly, she wants to be free from the gods, she wants to be their equal, she does not want to need Idol's. She wants autonomy, she wants safety, she wants security. She is being driven by her lack of autonomy, safety, and security. It takes the emotional turmoil of killing Orin to see the first real and true cracks in her programming. Where she finally sees things for what they are and finally uses reasoning. The gods like Bhaal, Lolth, the Absolute were the reasons why she didn't have autonomy, safety, or security.
With you by her side, Minthara can safely continue to deconstruct her own cult mindset and get out of it. You are no longer The Idol, just her lover. She lives for herself because you didn't punish her like every other cult she has been in. These cults taught her to fear the world, to fear someone like you. But it was your kindness, compassion, and mercy that made her realize that all of these cults told her nothing but lies. But without you, she goes right back into crisis mode. She doesn't feel a bond or connection with the rest of the team. You do not want her around. She has no community or family, and with the destruction of the Absolute, she has no purpose. The sun burns her eyes and burns her skin and the surface doesn't want her, it can never truly be her home. So she goes back to the Underdark to fulfill the only purpose she has ever known, to look for a solution to her pain, to the one thing that can fill the void, Lolth.

what new languages has Daedra learned?
Thanks for the ask @arach-tinilith!
The only other language she has learned is common. But, she didn't learn the language until she came up to the surface. Before hand, she never saw much of a need to learn it. Daedra isn't much of a book reader because of the dyslexia, so she never had a formal education on common. She learned the language from interacting with others who speak the language.
She also knows some tidbits, idioms, swears, etc in other languages as well. The surface is a much more mixed pot than Menzoberranzan and she has interacted with all kinds of people from all kinds of places. Speaking with people from another language, she would always pick something up.
Daedra is also a master at code switching, in which she would swap out the words she would use, how she would say those words, and the demeanor she would present herself depending on where she found herself. Daedra is low born and initially uneducated so she naturally speaks with a lot of slang and wasn't "proper". Going to Arach Tinilith, she learned how to speak very formal and with proper etiquette. On the surface, this has provided her some mobility when interacting with people of different economic classes. She was very useful during Gortash's dinner parties with partiars and duke's of the city, she would play them all like little fiddles. She knew when to talk like a noble, and when to talk like a commoner to get what she wanted out of them.

DAEDRA CONFIRMED BUG EATER!!! interested to know what the deets are on the bets she won and lost, if theres anything interesting there!!
Thanks for the ask friendo! @majorasnightmare
Yes! Daedra is a bug eater! She has spent some bits of her life homeless and had to get a bit resourceful. She has literally dug through garbage and eat spoiled food to get by. If bugs were nearby, she would catch them and chow down (they're a good source of protein you know). During her serial killing sprint in Menzoberranzan, she would rarely indulge in a bit of cannibalism cause, well, she was hungry and it's not like anybody else was gonna eat the corpse. Post-lobotomy Daedra does continue to eat bugs, but not because she's homeless or starving, but because she cannot stop putting things she shouldn't be in her mouth.
Now, Daedra can be a bit of a gambler and she always gambled on people. She prided herself on being able to assess other people's skills and talents. Before being enrolled in Arach Tinilith, she got involved in a mercenary guild and she would often bet on the success rates of other the mercs. Sometimes she'd win, sometimes she'd lose. The bets she never lost were bets made on herself because she never took a job she didn't think she could complete.
The gambling did stop for a while after going to clerical school. But she got back up to it once taking over the Temple of Bhaal. And the betting would get people motivated to do things, it would make them want to gain her approval. But Daedra did the betting essentially as a means of marking the people she no longer wants in the Temple as those who failed her orders, were sacrificed. They all quickly caught on that those Daedra would bet against meant she did not think they would be successful. She was never wrong.
Post-lobotomy Daedra on the other hand is a gambler but without the inhibition and without any kind of tactical thought. She would bet just to bet and she would bet it all. She losses a lot. It's why Shadowheart and Minthara stress out so much about Daedra hoarding all the teams gold because if they ever end up in a gambling situation, Daedra will gamble it all and lose it all.

And yet, another tag game! More Daedra posting! Thanks @majorasnightmare.
