Leonotis nepetifolia is an annual or short-lived perennial plant growing from 1 - 3 metres tall. The stem is branched at the upper nodes only and the plant has an easily uprooted taproot about 10cm long. The plant is often gathered from the wild for local use as a food and medicine. It is cultivated as a medicinal plant in India, Malaysia, on the Antilles, in Brazil and Africa; and is commonly grown as an ornamental. It’s distribution are Tropical Africa - widespread from Senegal to Eritrea and Ethiopia, south to S. Africa; Madagascar, Mauritius, throughout the Indian subcontinent. It’s habitat are a pantropical weed, often found at roadsides and in abandoned cultivations at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres. Meeting with Wollemi Pine in Istanbul..! Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis) at Nezahat Gökyigit Botanical Garden, Istanbul. The Wollemi pine is one of the greatest botanical discoveries of our time. The ‘Dinosaur tree’ or ‘living fossil’, the Wollemi pine is certainly one of the greatest botanical discoveries of our time. Wollemi çamı (Wollemia nobilis), yeryüzünün yaşayan Fosil ağaçlarından birisidir. Wollemi çamının en eski fosili 200 milyon yıl öncesine, jura dönemine tarihlenmektedir. Bu nedenle, Dünyada dinozorlar zamanından kalmış tek ve nadir bitkilerdendir. 1994 yılında Blue Mountains ‘ da Wollemi Mlli parkında ( Avustralya ) çalışan bir park görevlisi tarafından keşfedilmiş olup; doğal ortamda sadece 80 yetişkin ağaçın bulunması, Wollemi çamını dünyanın en kapsamlı koruma projelerinin merkezine yerleştirmiştir. Wollemia, Araucariaceae familyası içinde iğne yapraklı ağaç cins olup; Wollemia nobilis tek türüdür. Wollemi cinsi ve familyası, kozalaklılar sınıfının çamgiller takımı içerisinde olduğundan, hem botanik hem de popüler literatürde ağacın evrensel adı Wollemi Pine olmuştur. Ancak, Agathis ve Araucaria ile ilişkili olarak Araucariaceae familyası içerisine dahil edilmiştir. Wollemi çamı, 40 metreye kadar boylanabilen; dış kabuğu çikolata baloncuklarını andıran siğilli bir yapısı vardır. Yaprakları spiral şekilde, uzun sürgünler üzerinde 4’lü düzlemler şeklinde büyümekte olup, 8 cm uzunluğundadır. Tomurcuklar reçinelidir. Erkek ve dişi çiçek kozalakları aynı ağaç üzerinde olup; erkek çiçekler sürgün uçlarında 10 cm uzunluğunda silindirik kozalaklar şeklinde aşağı sarkarlar. Dişi kozalaklar, sürgün uçlarında, 10-12 cm en ve boyunda küremsi kozalaklar olup, kozalak pullarının dış kısmı dikenimsi geriye kıvrıktır. Tohumları kanatlıdır. Hızlı büyür, yılda 50-100 cm sürgün verir.
