The Human and The Kitsune
What purpose does a shrine hold?
A shrine can hold many purposes, especially for showing appreciation for a deity who protected you for years without fail. Yo-kai adores shrines, and they can claim it to be a second home for them if they do not have one to begin with.
Tumblr media
The Kitsune, deeply fond of the family who had built his shrine, knew everything about them, the good and the bad. He had intervened in moments of terror, his protective nature compelling him to act. But there were times when even he couldn't shield them from the father's unfortunate anger. He longed to, but the risk of being discovered was too great.
The Kitsune's sole reason for staying was a boy he had met years ago when he was a baby fox himself. That boy was Ryuu, a young man who had grown up with the Kitsune by his side, their invisible bond unbreakable.
His name was Ryuu. Ryuu was quite sensible for a young boy his age, almost 19 years in age, which meant he had to do some tasks around the house, and the most important one was wood chopping. His father, Doku, was quite the famous woodchopper, giving wood to the poorest townsfolk with a fake plaster smile on his face, and The Kitsune could feel the darkness in his heart.
Behind closed doors, Doku was quite a horrid man towards his beautiful and patient wife, Misora, who was a hostess and provided for the family most of the time. Due to her hostess job, Doku became a jealous man and threatened Misora frequently, but Misora was a strong woman who never backed down from her job just because of her husband.
And sweet daughter, Yukiko, younger sister to Ryuu, and sunshine to everyone's day. Despite the circumstances of his life, Misora could never be happier hanging out with her older brother, playing games with him, and protecting each other from Doku's wrath.
But what good can a horrid family be?
🐍
"Ryuu," Doku spat towards his eldest child. "Since you think you can be brave enough to try to punch me yesterday, how about you go alone in the forest? No assist from me?"
"Doku, you must be out of your mind," Misora gasped. "Ryuu is still a child."
"Bah! He's 18, I think he can handle it," Doku slurred, glaring at his wife.
"Mother, please, I can handle it," Ryuu pleaded with his mother. "I know my way through the woods, and I can pray for the Kitsune to protect me, ok?"
Misora sighed and looked over at her son. Her eyes were saddened, but a strong nod confirmed what he needed to know.
"I'll be back soon," Ryuu hummed, kissing his mother's cheek. "Yukiko, stay with her."
"I will," Yukiko spoke, sitting by her mother. "Just be back soon."
Ryuu nodded and walked out of his home, taking his wooden basket. It was quite a warm day, the sun sharing the sky with the silver clouds that he was used to seeing. Ryuu looked around before taking the path towards the woods.
Ryuu wasn't sure why his father wanted to live near the woods in the first place, but it made gathering wood for the job much easier. But he couldn't help but get a chill down his spine sometimes when he walked, which Ryuu often blamed on his father, who had instilled many fears into his head. But he shouldn't be so scared of a simple forest, a forest with cicadas making soft melodies whenever he turned a new corner.
The woods also held a significant memory for him. One day, when he was a young boy, naive about the world, he saw a fox cry in pain after his father had mercilessly set a trap and caught the fox's poor leg. Ryuu, when his father wasn't looking, freed the yellow fox and helped them toward the deeper parts of the forest. The fox gave him a small charm as a thank you, and Ryuu kept it, believing it to be a luck charm for him. When he told his mother of his good deed, Misora explained that the Kitsune would bless Ryuu because he helped a baby fox.
Ryuu was unsure if he believed that now, but it was still a significant memory for him. Sometimes, he hoped to see the fox again after so long, but he was never lucky to find the fox. But he did want it again after so long.
Ryuu gasped as he stepped down onto a log, feeling it lower underneath his foot. He was so distracted that he did not see that he was over a makeshift bridge above a roaring river. Ryu sighed as he concentrated on walking toward the other side, but his eyes widened to see eyes staring at him above the water. He chose to ignore it before going to the other side and looking back at the river.
"Ah, it seems that no one ever told you about the kappa, hmm?"
Ryu gasped and turned to see a young boy around his age smiling at him.
"My mother had told me plenty about them," Ryu muttered. "I just am not used to see them in the rivers."
"Kappas accompany every part of water," the boy mentioned, walking towards Ryuu. "Good thing they didn't drag you down, too. You look too cute to be drenched in water."
Ryuu blushed and turned away. "And may I ask who you are to act such a way towards me?"
"Ah, I forget to introduce myself? Shame on me, shame on me," the boy grinned. "My name is Kōmyō, and I happen to take naps around here."
"My name is Ryuu, Kōmyō," Ryuu spoke. "I am trying to chop wood for m father."
"Oh, I do believe that these trees are perfect for chopping and can live for long, long fires," Kōmyō exclaimed. "I do think they can work."
"You seem quite knowledgeable about these things, Kōmyō," Ryuu acknowledged.
"I have lived here for a long time, Ryuu," Kōmyō smiled. "And trust me, with all my time here, I have never encountered such a beautiful face like yours before."
Ryuu blushed and turned away. "Enough with the flirting, you-"
"Hm? You what, Ryu?" Kōmyō teased.
"Please let me go," Ryuu sighed. "I have to chop the wood or else my mother and sister will worry about me."
"And leave you with the dangers around you?" Kōmyō gasped. "You seem to lack any survival skills, my dear. I think it should be best for me to protect you in case anything happens."
Ryuu rolled his eyes and walked away, ignoring the strange man. He didn't have time for this, especially since the day seemed to pass on quite quickly, and knowing his father, his wrath was something Ryuu wished to avoid.
"I am not a child, sir, and I thank you for your concern," Ryuu frowned. "But it's best for you not to interact with me again."
Kōmyō grinned, his eyes glistening underneath the sunlight. "Oh? Are you sure? You seem quite interesting."
Ryuu blushed and rushed away, trying to ignore Kōmyō, but the stranger followed him continuously, talking endlessly. It was annoying, but it did beat him being alone most of the time, and throughout the wood chopping, he began to tolerate Kōmyō's rabbling.
"Have you seen Yo-Kai before?"
"Oh, yes, I have of many times," Kōmyō spoke. "And I heard that your family are quite fond of the Kyuubi, a kitsume yokai of good fortune."
"They are protectors of the innocent," Ryuu explains. "My mother always believes that the Kyuubi are great protectors and fortune givers, and each tail represents their power. With each 100 years pass, a tail grows until it becomes a Senior Kyuubi, a kitsune of many possibilities."
Kōmyō found himself blushing, and a pair of kitsune ears sprouted from his head, but before Ryuu noticed, he brushed them off. "Well, I'm quite surprise that you know a lot about the Kyuubi."
"My mother, grandmother and great grandmother before me have worshipped the Kyuubi for many generations, and vowed that I will be the same," Ryuu spoke. "It's not based on knowlegde, but more based on belief really."
"I am not surprised," Kōmyō spoke. "If you were to meet one for the first time, would you be happy?"
"I might be," Ryuu spoke. "But that's a secret I keep to my grave."
Kōmyō chuckled. "Ok, ok, I'll stop. You have prove you have more knowlegde than I do."
Ryu smiled and laughed, putting the wood in his basket. "You know, it's nice to talk to someone during this."
"I'm glad to give you company," Kōmyō smirked, taking Ryuu's hand. "If I were to ask, would you be intrested in accomanying me to a nice shop?"
"Oh," Ryu gulped and looked down. "Maybe some other time. I have to get back before my mother notices I took too long."
"Of course, we wouldn't want your mother to worry," Kōmyō spoke. "I should apologize for being so selfish."
"No, don't be," Ryuu blushed. "Just some other day?"
Kōmyō blushed and smiled, giving Ryuu a nod. "Of course! I presume tomorrow will be good for you?"
"Yes, tomorrow sounds nice," Ryuu agreed.
Kōmyō looked over and took Ryuu's hand. "How about I walk you home? My treat?"
Ryuu stared into the man's green eyes and managed a small nod, letting Kōmyō lead him towards the path. He didn't understand it; what was happening to him? This guy was a mere stranger, and yet he was being asked on a date, and he agreed like it was nothing. But there was something about Kōmyō that Ryuu couldn't describe but very much enjoyed.
It made Ryu hold his hand back.
🐍
"That's a lot of wood," Yukiho mumbled, looking into the basket. "You must been pretty focused with this."
"Hm, I was, but I was with someone at that time," Ryuu mentioned, drinking his tea. "He was a strange man."
"How strange?" Yukiho questioned.
"Just very aloof but incredibly flirtatious," Ryuu described. "But he wasn't malicious in any way. Just very strange in general."
"Oh? He was flirtatious?"
"He was very flirty towards me," Ryuu blushed. "I don't know how I can describe it without feeling warm about it."
"Aw! You have a crush," giggled Yukiho.
"No, I don't," Ryuu huffed. "He's just a stranger I just met, Yukiho."
"Yeah, but you are blushing at the thought of him," Yukiho teased, pointing at Ryuu's blushing face.
"That doesn't mean anything." Ryuu stated. "…Though he did ask if we could hang out.."
"Oh…?"
"Don't you dare, Yukiho," Ryuu glared, watching his sister slowly get up. "If you…"
"Mother!" Yukiho called out, rushing inside.
Ryuu rushed back inside, now embarrassed.
"Oh? What is it, my dear?" Misora giggled. "You seem happy about something."
"Ryu is going somewhere with a nice man," Yukiho whispered.
"No, it's not like that," Ryuu gasped.
"A date? How scandlous of you, Ryuu," Misora teased. "Is he quite the handsome man?"
Ryuu blushed and looked away. "…Perhaps he is, but I do not believe that should matter at this moment."
"And how come?" Misora asked. "I believe you need some time outside of the house. Your father has already robbed you of enough, so I think you should go."
Ryuu looked up at his mother; seeing her sweet but very safe smile made him sigh.
"I'll consider it, Mother."
"Wonderful," Misora cooed, kissing his forehead. "But let's keep this a secret, hmm?"
"Yes, we should," Yukiho giggled. "Ah, when can I find someone?"
"When you are older, Yukiho," Misora laughed. "Now, help me with the riceballs please?"
That night, Ryuu couldn't stop thinking about the elusive Kōmyō. It was amazing how Kōmyō managed to sway Ryu into a scandalous date, which could lead to a bad reputation if he isn't careful, but why couldn't he say no at that time?
Maybe some fresh air could do him some good.
Ryuu carefully sneaked away and walked towards the shrine, feeling the nice breeze around him. It was quite pleasing for him as he sat down by a nearby patch of grass to simply admire the nightly sights that surrounded him. As he looked around, a shadow caught his eye, and what he saw…
A Kitsune, no, more specially a Kyuubi. A pure Kyuubi, with its yellow, white, and lilac fur that seemed to glow under the moonlight and green eyes that made Ryuu stumble back by how familiar they looked to him. He couldn't stop himself from staring at the sight, and the Kyuubi seemed not to mind as it landed by a nearby tree.
"You seem content to stare, hmm?"
"…I apologixe if I seem to transfixed on you," Ryuu stammered.
The Kyuubi smirked as he rested on a tree, staring down at Ryuu. "No, truly I don't mind. As you are the one who had worshipped me for years."
"Yes, I have," Ryuu gulped. "It's strange to see you in the open like this."
"Yes, you seem to catch me on a very rare night," The Kyuubi spoke, playing with his flames. "But you seem troubled, what could be that matter?"
Ryuu pressed his lips together, now debating if he should talk about his recent encounter.
"…I don't understand the concept of love," Ryuu spoke. "I have been surrounded by only hatred. A man has asked me to go on a date, and yet I do not know if I should go."
"Well, you might also know that the Kyuubi are quite experts on love, and though the advice I give may seem unconventional, I hope you understand the meaning behind them. Go with what your heart says, young human, and by the time you do, let the heart speak for you always."
Ryuu wanted to question that further, but the Kyuubi was already gone before he could even ask. Ryuu began to think about it, and maybe he should try it, just this once.
But he should be getting back to bed now.
