the sex scene in volume 8 makes otherside picnic one of my favorite depictions of transfeminine sexuality of all time. even if it's never explicitly stated, the allegories are so strong that it's almost impossible to ignore.

sorawo and toriko, two women who are outcasts in society through no fault of their own, who have been abused, manipulated, used up, and discarded by the people they trusted most, who have had their bodies permanently altered in ways the average person would find repulsive and dangerous, tried to be normal. they tried to fit the mold and be what they were supposed to be, to have normal sex, to follow the script laid out for them, and it was disappointing and upsetting for both of them. it could do nothing but make them miserable, a cruel reminder that they'll never be accepted by society.

however, when they discarded all pretenses, when they refused to feel shame over using the parts of their bodies society finds repulsive, when they accepted - no, embraced! - their bodies, their lives, and each other, something magical happened. they transcended the realm of normalcy, shattering its boundaries altogether, until the sex they were having could no longer even be recognized as sex at all. by embracing the qualities that make them different, they came to love not only each other, but themselves. for 8 volumes they lived in fear of the otherside, a world that represents all of society's greatest fears, all the while still feeling inexplicably drawn to it - addicted to it. but here and now, through the act of loving themselves as the freaks and perverts that they are, they became one with the otherside, and realized its true beauty.
