Étienne Dinet ou Nasreddine Dinet après sa conversion à l'islam, orientaliste français et algérien d'adoption (1861-1929) est l’un des plus fervents amoureux de l'Algérie. Il a eu une passion pour ce beau pays et sa population dont il épousa la terre, la foi et la cause.

Il découvre l’Algérie en 1884 à l’occasion d'un grand périple jusqu’à Ouargla et Laghouat. C’est la découverte décisive et émerveillée du Sud qui va profondément marquer la vie d’Etienne Dinet.

À partir de 1895, il renonce à toute source d’inspiration en dehors des sujets algériens et s’installe dans l’oasis de Bou-Saâda dans la famille de Slimane Ben Ibrahim qui sera son trait d’union avec la société saharienne. Il a vécu la plus grande partie de sa vie en Algérie.

Décédé à Paris le 24 décembre 1929 d’une crise cardiaque à l’âge de 68 ans, Nasreddine Dinet est enterré dans la Koubba mortuaire qu’il avait fait construire à Bou-Saada.
