Algerian state energy firm Sonatrach announced on 22 August that the fuel aid promised to Lebanon has departed Algeria and is en route to the Levantine nation. 

The Ain Akr ship left the new oil port in the eastern Skikda region of Algeria on Thursday and is loaded with 30,000 tons of fuel under approval from the North African country’s president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Sonatrach said. 

“After the loading process was completed, a few hours were waited to complete the technical commercial and security procedures before the ship was released and set off for its destination,” Hussein Belabed, head of the eastern Algerian port unit, told local media. 

Director of the Skikda Oil Refining Complex, Abdel Hamid Marabet, said that “this shipment of fuel oil directed to the State of Lebanon is produced at the Skikda refinery, which has an estimated production capacity of 16.5 million tons annually.” 

It was announced on 19 August that Algeria would supply Lebanon with immediate fuel assistance after a shortage at the country's last operational power plant caused a widescale blackout of the state grid last week.

Iraq said on 20 August that it remained “committed” to delivering fuel to Lebanon and that a delay in new shipments was due to “technical” and “logistical” issues. A new fuel shipment from Iraq would arrive “in the coming days,” an Iraqi cabinet spokesman said. 

Sources had told Lebanese media on Sunday that Baghdad decided against renewing its agreement with Beirut, as the Lebanese Central Bank failed to approve a new $700 million credit line required to fulfill Lebanon's obligations under the deal.

For the past three years, the Lebanese government has been awaiting the implementation of a US-backed and World Bank-funded scheme that called for the transport of Egyptian gas and Jordanian electricity via Syria to Lebanon.
