Eternal Ellora One of the two columns or Dhwajasthambhas at Kailasa temple, Ellora. It is about 16 metres tall embellished with a decorative bands containing Kirti-mukha or lion-like faces. The Kailash temple at Ellora is a distinct monument in itself like no other and is an architectural marvel executed by digging top down from a basaltic slope. Over 200,000 tons of rock was scooped out of the cliff before the temple could take shape and emerge in the present pattern to which the sculptures were carved to embellish the monument. Inspired by Mt.Kailasha in the Himalayas, the abode of Lord Shiva, the temple scooped out of a single massive rock, was initiated during the reign of Krishna I (mid-8th century CE) of the Rashtrakuta dynasty. This temple complex is among the 34 cave monasteries and temples that constitute the Ellora group of monuments which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located near Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. The Kailasha temple measures 164 feet (50 metres) long, 108 feet (33 metres) wide, and 100 feet (30 metres) high. The temple was built during the regime of the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana and completed or commissioned (as debated by historians) in 1117CE to commemorate an important victory in 1116 CE. It marks the apogee of the Hoysala art and architecture along with the temples at Halebidu and Somanathapura. The presiding deity Chennakesava (Handsome  Kesava = Krishna)  is one of the many forms of Lord Vishnu. The details on this building 💜 Continuing the previous post Hajipur was a revenue center in Mughal times and the legacy continued in British India, when it was made an administrative center. As a result of the new administrative importance of the town, many institutions were established and the town saw a major influx of officers employed under the banner of British Queen. These officers made the town their home and started constructing their residences. The demigods and demons kept on churning the ocean, and several precious life forms, materials, and gems kept on emerging like butter from churnedyogurt. Everyone from among the demons and demigods ran to lay hands on these items. Then emerged poison, and everyone ran away. The one who came forward was Shiva, drinking the poison and keeping it in his throat, elevating him to the status of Neelkanth Mahadev (The blue throated supreme deity). The most potent elixir followed, and jumped in all except Shiva, fighting over the pot of elixir. Vishnu had to take form of the most beautiful feminine imaginable, and tricked the demon, took away the pot and roamed all over the sky, distributing elixir to demigods. In all this act, drops of elixir fell on Earth. One of them fell at Har ki Paudi, Haridwar, in Ganga, exactly at the spot that you see in the photo. The story can be argued as mythological, or some might say it is a true story told through poetic symbols.
