so here's the huge beta KC theory i was talking about. for the uninitiated: shadowfall is canon, it's an actual dimension separate from “our” apex games, multiple dimensions have been proven to be a thing in the apex universe by the wraith cinematic, and i have a theory on how the particular beta dimension came to be. wanna preface this by saying this isn't a lore prediction but rather just me filling in the blanks and being a tf lore nerd bc what else is new

it all starts... with effect and cause in titanfall 2. remember that mission? major anderson in the ceiling, the weird looking corpses everywhere, the fold weapon test explodes, leaving cooper conscious in a world frozen in time. we know very little about the ark, but this scene reveals to us that it is powerful enough to manipulate spacetime (and before you ask, the full scale fold weapon does the same thing and cooper doesn’t have the wrist device from effect and cause there)

my theory is that the ark rippled time so strongly here that it created a separate timeline to split off from our “main” timeline, visualised here:

note: the present day was originally 2733 but a year has passed in the lore too as indicated by the writers on twitter, making the present day 2734)

WHAT makes the beta dimension so radically different from the alpha dimension? one simple answer. in the beta dimension, jack cooper died in the explosion caused by the fold weapon test.

the catalyst of the militia victory on typhon dying and hence not causing the destruction of typhon has MASSIVE effects for the course of the frontier wars. the ark gets delivered to the fold weapon, with no one to stop them. no one succeeds in stopping the imc from destroying the entire planet of harmony, home of the militia. the militia never win the war. imc forces grow ever stronger. they have more resources, more territory, more power than in the alpha universe. they invest more in ARES division, and they invest more in hammond robotics, because... well... we all know hammond robotics and the imc and the syndicate hold hands. one significant thing remains the same: kuben blisk still founds the apex games as usual, bc he’s rich and bored and well, blisk.

especially the different hammond robotics is here, because a major player in the beta dimension is associated with them: revenant. well. god revenant. but how exactly did he come to be god revenant in the beta dimension?

let’s superimpose revenant’s timeline over the diagram above.

revenant was already seeking out hammond robotics employees to kill before the events of titanfall 2, before the fold weapon test made the timelines split off. however, with the imc victory and subsequent flourish of hammond robotics, they are much, much better equipped to deal with one (1) murderous simulacrum trying to kill all their employees. they manage to capture him again, make him more pliable. maybe they already have shadow technology at their disposal. maybe they experimented on him with said shadow technology. maybe they unintentionally created a more powerful revenant, invulnerable, in an eternal state of shadow. maybe they created... a god.

the more powerful hammond also succeeded in something else: effectively silencing loba from ever speaking out about what she witnessed in the restaurant that fateful night. no doubt beta dimension loba has the same fierce determination and strong will, but this hammond she can’t beat. she never comes in the position where she goes to look for the demônio. maybe she was finally succesfully lost in the undoubtedly hammond operated foster system. maybe she got caught in bureaucracy. or maybe... she could not fight any longer against the multi headed beast that is hammond robotics after an imc victory.

meanwhile shadow revenant is having a grand time. he kills hammond employees anyway because that’s what he does, but when you’re immortal that might get a bit... boring. so he goes looking for something else to do, and his attention is attracted by the one thing that’s adverstised all across the frontier. the apex games.

shadow revenant stages a coup on the apex games. he kills kuben blisk (it’s what he deserves), he kills the entirety of the syndicate. he takes over the games. watching. waiting.

now let me include something that wasn’t my own observation but one by @brokenghostt​ . included a screenshot bc this is better explained:

blisk (alpha dimension blisk!) throws ash’s head into something that looks like the ark. now this is where my theory gets a little shaky, but obviously there’s something going on with beta KC that made it so that pathfinder got there in his “nightmare” in the first place, and what made ash’s head end up there after being thrown in what-is-possibly-the-ark. the events of the could be another crucial point in that timeline, the ark’s energy being somehow connected to it since it’s a timeline that split off caused by ark technology in the first place?

either way, this is my theory on how beta kc came to be. i have one more point i want to bring up, why did i specifically bring up effect and cause?

What I feel would’ve improved StarVS(part two of a few)

Hey, its Mick again, how hangs it? Its weird that I’m both criticizing a show I still somewhat like, as WELL as giving off a list of things that I feel would improve it BEFORE its finale, but I feel its still worth talking about. Today I’m gonna talk about the forgotten Los Angeles suburb that we all miss-

-Echo Creek, settled on the battlefield of a massive opossum war, this charming town is composed of several gi-GANTIC hills that people thought putting houses on was a good idea because its Los Angeles. With that, I’m going to point out all the forgotten characters in the show, and how they could’ve EASILY stayed in the show, or how they could’ve been improved while they were still there. 

FIRST OFF-

-Ferguson and Alphonso. Many wondered where the HELL they went in season 2 after having prominent roles as side characters in season 1. The answer is that they were BANISHED due to the creators being able to write more of the original story they WANTED to write, that never featured them. As you may or may not  know, Alphonso and Ferguson were never meant to be a part of the show, Disney made the writers squeeze them in because they wanted Marco to have male best friends as for whatever dumb reason they thought a show with a female-centric cast wouldn’t sell as much. SPOILER ALERT-it totally sold as much, and once they got the season 2 order Alphonso and Ferguson were PRETTY much out.

How they could’ve been improved: Now once again I understand WHY they were written out, but the fact of the matter is that while the writers hated them, the fans didn’t, hell in one of the comics-

-they were even ADVERSTISED to be in it! They were THAT much of a draw. Ultimately, what I feel would’ve improved their characters if the show straight up ACKNOWLEDGED that they weren’t supposed to be in the story, like maybe have them gone for only half or a quarter of the season, and then explain that Omnitraxis took them out of the space time continuum as they never truly belonged. Either that or just...keep them in normal style and develop them beyond the role of “Funny fat friend” and “Funny foreign friend” respectively, but what do I know?

How they could’ve stayed: The EASY answer is having them be squires to Star as well, allowing them to become just as kick ass as their best pal Marco...buuuuuuuuuuuut there’s a better answer: LET MARCO VISIT HIS FREAKING FRIENDS! Remember in “Marco Jr” how the Diazes gave him crap for not visiting as much? THAT-was a valid ass point considering oh I don’t know-HE OWNS MAGICAL SCISSORS(another reason to hate the original “Neverzone” deal because him getting his own scissors wasn’t NEEDED). He could’ve visited home at ANY time, caught up with his besties, solve a mystery or something, but NO-the bulk of Marco’s arcs in seasons 3 and 4 are pri-MARILY romance based. I would’ve taken like ONE episode of him catching up with his friends, ALL I need, BUT because the writers washed their hands of Echo Creek we’ll never get that chance.

NEXT UP-two characters that are...dis-TURBINGLY the same.

BRITTNEY Wong, the spoiled mean girl head cheerleader in literally every high school story that’s EVER existed because status quo-

-and Jeremy Birnbaum, Marco’s pint-sized karate rival.

How they could’ve been improved: Literally ANYTHING that would the two of them past basic bitch bullies. Now Jeremy had a LITTLE bit of development in “All Belts are Off” in explaining the reason he even HAS a black  belt is because his parents practically bribe Sensei Brantley...much like how Brittney’s father bribed the school to make her...head cheerleader-DEAR GOD-they’re both the exact same character if you think about it! Honestly, just have Brittney and/or Jeremy bond with their rival Star and/or Marco in some way or fashion that either quells or AMPLIFIES the rivalry. Hell, I’m amazed Jeremy never tried to TRULY get back at Marco after “Monster Arm”, give the kid some credit for only enacting petty pranks.

How they could’ve stayed: Okay with Brittney the answer isn’t so much obvious as it is HILARIOUS. You know how Rich Pigeon’s family became royal SOLELY because their insanely rich? Same thing, just have her dad straight up BUY a kingdom and she becomes a princess. Don’t lie, that’d be hilarious. And with Jeremy, I think he should’ve gone full on kung fu rival after realizing EVERY accomplishment he ever had was because his parents bought it for him. He can’t handle that he’s not special, and because of that turns to the DARK side! Plenty of ways to go with him.

NEXT UP-

OSKAR GREASON(thought it was Gleason for years)-the boring love interest of Star Butterfly whom she BARELY bonded with in seasons 1 and 2, and was only there to exist!

How he could’ve improved: You know how Marco and Jackie slowly bonded over seasons 1 and 2, how they developed as an actual couple, RIGHT up to the very end? THAT-but with Oskar. Have her go on like, a FEW dates with him, HELL-have them double date making Star realize how little she actually cares for him and have THAT be the point where she realizes she likes Marco! GRAH-freaking waste of a love interest, as well as a generally amusing character.

How he could’ve stayed: Musical apprentice to Ruberiot, easy. Have it be really awkward since Star used to crush on him, yadda yadda, writes itself.

NEXTAH-

Sensei (Brantley) Marco’s dimwitted but lovable sensei!

How he could’ve improved: HONESTLY-he personally as a character needs to improve the least from a story standpoint, he had a pretty funny mini-arc in being a fraud of a karate teacher, somehow getting away with every lesson BEFORE the red belt, it works. A concept that SHOULD’VE been more explored was his friendship with Marco, maybe have the two improve their martial arts together to become CHAMPIONS of justice!

How he could’ve stayed: Become a squire with Marco, easy. No more to say there.

NEEEEEEEEEEEERXT-

MISS MARGARET SKULLNICK-the strict, yet caring school teacher to Star Butterfly and her other classmates! She’s a bad ass troll school teacher, what MORE do you want?!

How she could’ve been improved: Nothing, because she was fucking awesome and underrated.

How she could’ve stayed: FREAKING TUTOR TO STAR AND MARCO! I KNOW the writers think all the magical Mewni nonsense trumps the school aspect but...WHEN THE HELL ARE ANY OF THE KIDS GOING TO SCHOOL ANY MORE?! They could’ve EASILY had an ep where like, Star misses school or something, and then gets her math checked up on by Miss Skullnick, I don’t know I just miss the bad ass troll lady! 

TXEN-

Starfan13, the whacky Star Butterfly fangirl who is also voiced by show creator Daron Nefcy!

How she could’ve been improved: The biggest problem with her is that outside of Star being shown to be bi in season 4, most representations of queer rep in the show are of nameless background characters. THE EXCEPTION-Starfan13, who has a DEFINITE crush on Star. The problem is obvious, said crush is only mentioned once throughout the series, and is never brought up again. Maybe have Starfan13 try to get over Star with another crush, but ultimately that fails because she becomes Janicefan13, basically absorbing the supposed persona of her obsession. Have her go through a real personal arc realizing that before she can obsess about others, she should become obsessed with her-SELF...I worded that horribly, LOVE herself. Also, do we know her ACTUAL first name? Four seasons and we only know her social media handle, what’s up with that?

How she could’ve stayed: Pretty much the same “Getting over Star and learning to love herself” story-BUT-where she somehow follows Star to Mewni and is still as obsessed with her. Honestly, isn’t it STRANGE that the writers never thought about that with her? She’s the most fan-girly fangirl of ALL time, you think the physical borders between realities would stop HER?! Just unrealistic.

FRAAAAAAAAAAAAAH-

How they could’ve been improved: Honestly not by much, they were pretty fun in season 1 and 2-BUT-the one thing that always bugged me about them was in “Heinous” how they FINALLY acknowledged how little they knew about their son and would keep more of an eye him...said subject is CLEARLY forgotten as they just FULL ON allow their son to move to the dangerous hellscape that is Mewni. I know they joke about “Star stealing their son” but-NO-dammit, they could’v said NO , they could’ve tried to be actual parents and showed some FREAKING backbone! ALSO-not have them name their second born after their first born, that is WEIRD!

How they could’ve stayed: Now they actually didn’t have to MOVE to Mewni, but they should’ve been to Marco what Moon and River were to Star in seasons 1 and 2, where Marco would regularly talk to them via magic mirror. If you’ve seen my previous post, you can see how turning Marco into the Star(pun intended) of Mewni was a good idea in theory, but wasn’t well done in practice. They only appeared ONCE in season 3, and only had a passing mention in one of TEN episodes into season 4. River and Moon weren’t abandoned as characters, why were the Earth parents?

How she could’ve stayed: Yeah I skipped improved on purpose, she was great and she should’ve stayed. I don’t know WHY TV shows keep doing this, be it StarVs or New Girl, but sometimes REGARDLESS of how interesting they are they’ll just write out love interests completely once the romance ends. A person doesn’t disappear when you break up with them, they continue to exist and live on their life. Maybe Marco could’ve had a Mewni day and have her moving on with a new guy, to which Marco gets jealous or something. Point is, waste of a character and I hope she at least has ONE cameo in the final season.

We recently purchased a new home to use as a renter. Our real estate agent told us to purchase and insurance policy from Old Republic to cover anything that could be wrong with the house since it was built in the 80's. An inspector looked at the house prior to our purchase and didn't notice anything with the property. Once the house was occupied by our renter, he noticed that the lights would shut off and stay off for a few hours. Old republic sent an electrician over and he told us that the prior owner had replaced a new breaker on top of a broken buster. He reported back to old republic and they stated that the insurance didn't cover anything that was not installed correctly. We were precise to inform our agent of the policy we needed for the house. Why donating all the money in the world to wildlife conservation won't solve the root of the problem.

A few years ago, after I had read Redefining Man, It became clear to me that I would be forever obsessed with the fact that while we are struggling as a species, we cannot seem to fathom that some of our most important companions in this journey called Life on Earth are disappearing in front of our very eyes ( and, mostly because of archaic practices that cannot seem to be corrected ) due to overpopulation, misinformation, religion and just basic human kindness.

Younger and naive as I was then ( a little less than now perhaps) I wondered if it had something to do with not being aware of all the efforts currently been done throughout many countries and extensive protection from people doing amazing work, and that was enough. That if we could just spread the word then, through managing resources and changing the current status quo, things would correct themselves eventually. We, (in my limited mind) would stop the savage mass extermination that happens every minute. It seems that I could not understand the complexity of the situation. How, nevertheless of the small, precise changes that are helping, there was still a bigger, intrusive problem eating us from the inside out in the way we deal with non planning or as I call it The procrastination of our time. Kevin Richardson explained it very well in a quote I can’t seem to find after I erased it years back and have been trying to find forever, but it went something like: believing we can just throw money at the problem, which can mean using canned hunting resources, as an example, for supporting non profits against poaching and fooling ourselves that represents some kind of help is simply as bonkers as it is irresponsible. The billions of dollars spent yearly on retrieval and destruction of ivory in Asia doesn’t compensate for the sales happening in front of our very eyes here at home in Central Park, or even DC. At the end of the day, wildlife trade is the third largest illegal industry worldwide. Big business that is hard to stop when the demand is so high I think should be tackled with caution, intelligence and the use of technology to our advantage. But there is another vital side, analysis of human behavior which I wish could be carefully molded through education. In a time where information is everywhere and you can’t trust what you read, I wonder how that could be possible even. When I look at specific examples of communities in Africa where each region that is next to each other, has a unique set of problems/needs, and nevertheless can’t even get it together to apply the same strategy, is when I feel it might be too late. Because we have built our reality as diverse as our thoughts. Our beautiful diversity becomes a handicap in not being able to at least agree on what is out of bounds for our future as a whole. Regulations as well as education, must work hand in hand with the monetary assistance we so eagerly request.

Where lies the answer? Nature is such a precious, magically renewable universe that always seems to surprise us. I wish I could be able to travel vastly through the most remote wilderness, and witness the places where these extraordinary creatures, ->our friends< still thrive, observe silently from afar, be selfish and breathe the fresh air enjoying them first hand knowing that my children might not have that opportunity in a not some distance future, instead of watching documentaries that leave me filled with worry or the horrible bombarding adverstisements non profits use and only promote a sense of fatalism. Which helps no one. At the end of the day, the future is open and unknown, and I dream of the human spirit challenging our ego and joining to start anew.

Queering Opera

As a queer woman-of-color I personify a lot of non-realities in the opera world. Opera tends to be heteronormative in its convention, not showing much grey area when interpreting gender and sexuality and with these realities dictating much of how operatic works are formulated, it makes it hard for someone who doesn’t fit into these molds of heteronormativity to find an authentic operatic voice when portraying a role, reenacting a scene, or just trying to relate to the lyrics in a particular song.

Ever since I was a child, I knew that I had an attraction to women. I remember the first image of a naked body that really stayed fragmented in my mind was not of my own body, it was an image of a naked, white woman from a pornographic adverstisement pop-up on my family computer. We had a computer virus that flooded our homepage with pornography and I remember seeing this image and then my mother walking in on me seeing the image and subsequently freaking out because I had seen something that would potentially “corrupt” me. I wasn’t allowed to use the computer until the virus had been fixed and even years after that incident, when I was old enough to have my own computer in my room, I still wasn’t allowed to have Internet connectivity in fear that I would see more sexualized images...but I digress. After seeing that female figure with fully-developed breasts, hips, a dramatic waist-to-hip ratio, and a vagina… I was intrigued by its form. I both admired the features of the woman and was aroused by it before I even knew what my own arousal was. Around this timeframe, the years of experimental childhood play occurred and I had all of my playground girlfriends “play doctor” with me: these sessions included seeing each other naked, comparing body parts, pretending to be each other’s “boyfriends” with small kisses and touches here-and-there. I was fascinated more by female friends’ body parts than my male friends, and a lot of my female friends developed earlier than me, and I would be in awe of their curvaceous figures, noticing how they resembled the body of the porn star I saw at age 6. Paired with these external manifestations of my budding lesbianism came the voyeuristic ventures of late-night erotica on T.V. Although my parents thought they were protecting my innocence by not allowing my Internet access, they put a cable T.V. in my room, forgetting about the massive amount of sex all over the place in the media. Perhaps they thought I would fall asleep before the phone sex advertisements, sex toy infomercials, and softcore erotic movies/shows would come on, but I was a youthful insomniac, unable to fall asleep until 3 or 4AM at times. I began watching an erotic television show on “Oxygen”, the women’s network, called “Bliss”. It portrayed examples of female sexuality with soft-lens visions of women’s breasts and buttocks and all different forms of sex that always contained a female protagonist: heterosexual, homosexual, non-binary and gender-swapping sex. Seeing those visuals of women in ecstasy fascinated me, and I remembered always wanting to watch more of the lesbian storylines than the straight storylines. But, still, I was also attracted to men. I still had posters of the hottest male actors, male pop stars and boy bands, and I still liked boys in my classes at school. All of this intrigue of women was something that I kept secret because I felt this unspoken sentiment of being gay-in any form-was bad. My parents were also religious and they believed that being gay was a sin, so I never spoke about my affinity for both men and women until I got older and wasn’t ashamed of who I was. I also found out that I had two gay male relatives, and I began to discuss the hypocrisy behind accepting them and not their own daughter to my parents.

There is this idea of women being able to have ‘acceptable queerness’ in the heteronormative space; women experimenting with other women or being not fully heterosexual as a performance to heterosexual men increased with the rise of modern pornographic culture, but even during the turn of the century women having sexual fluidity was still considered a crime and mental illness, but it was still subordinate to homosexual men due to patriarchal dynamics about gender (women are weaker than men, so their sexual preferences aren’t as detrimental as men’s...men must be straight because they are stronger). However, a lot of traditional conventions behind heteronormativity come from homoeroticism in male-to-male interactions, and this can be seen in opera. Women were not allowed to perform in many on-stage productions, and when the first opera houses began, men were playing female roles. The men who played these roles went through a process of testicular castration  in order to keep their voices high-pitched and these performers were called, “castrati”. (Britannica)

In my personal experience with my own sexuality, I feel as if I have to perform as a straight woman in order to properly portray females in a heteronormative way. This tendency to perform as heterosexual has clouded my own viewpoint of my sexuality and has increasingly made me question where I stood in relation to be attracted to women. During the beginning stages of my transition to larger opera works and meeting my vocal coach and professor, I was experiencing a sexual dysphoria that I felt I had to suppress in order to successfully relay my arias to my audience; I grappled with believing I was a lesbian at the time, and was unable to find opera text that shared any similar sentiments. This is not surprising considering the fact that most operatic composers were heterosexual identifying males. The opera that is primarily studied throughout my schooling years was always works that were written by men, celebrated by other male theorists, and those works were considered the foundation of studying classical operatic texts. This celebration of their works heightened my sense of dysphoria and I believe that it also led to me not fully grasping who I truly was for awhile.

Gay men have a larger space in larger musical works than gay women. These can be seen in the crossover works of the musical theater/Broadway space, where gay males stereotypically ‘run’ the discipline. I believe this can also be said when detailing the idea of castrati and the homo-eroticism of being able to perform as gender-fluid icons on stage: even though it is unspoken, gay men are widely more accepted and prevalent in the opera world than gay women. I felt more accepted in the discipline when I was told of modern operas now allowing women to play ‘contralto’ and ‘countertenor’ parts. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a contralto is “...a singing voice that has the range between tenor and mezzo-soprano [typically females]...” (Merriam-Webster) A countertenor is “...a tenor with an unusually high range [typically males]…” (Merriam-Webster). (A tenor is typically described as a high-voice male vocal part, and a mezzo-soprano is a middle-high voice for a female.)  This allowed for women to play the parts of male characters in lead roles. This is a phenomena not to be thought of in the older years of opera and it allowed me to feel more comfortable with my identity when I found this out. Another interesting factoid, though, is that I’m a soprano which usually fares to more traditional female roles. For my voice part, there aren’t many roles that allow me to explore gender-bending or any form of masculinity.

My opera studies have always been strictly heteronormative - I have not performed any operatic works that are for male leads; I’ve never portrayed a different gender or etc. The closest form of gender-fluidity that I’ve portrayed is the aria, “Ballata” by Ottorino Respighi. When I studied this song, it fit the correct voice part and intonation needed for my voice (soprano), but when I looked up a performance of the piece I also found that it could be performed by a male tenor. There are many pieces that have gender-neutral lyrics which could be for any gender to sing, and maybe these lyrics also allow a space for queer people to sing about/to whomever partner they prefer. In my experience, however, my voice teachers have assumed that I would be singing to a male protagonist/antagonist and maybe that is because they never knew about my queerness. (Perhaps, it was also because of how we assume most people to be heterosexual before anything else which is less of an operatic issue and more of a cultural/social issue.)

Black queerness is something that is completely absent from opera. Since blackness is a minority in the opera world, in general, the minority of blackness interwoven with queerness is even smaller. These two intersections personify another part of my public vs. private space persona - the reality that my private space (my queerness and my blackness) does not have a home within the public space (opera). Since opera is a performance of art for an audience, how you present yourself is automatically put in the public eye - my blackness can be both private and public but I categorize my blackness as more private space because it’s an identity that goes beyond skin color and this can also be said for my queerness-it goes beyond liking women, there is a culture behind both identities that does not exist in the public lens of the opera space. This conflict of the public space mingling with the private space allows me to have to perform while already performing. I feel as if parts of my blackness and queerness must be hidden from the main-stage due to my voice part, depending on what songs I am singing, and how I present myself to the audience. I feel that they must already adjust to seeing a dark-skinned black woman on the stage, so they should not be presented with all facets of my identity all at once. This assumption is assuming that my audience is primarily white heterosexuals and of a different class background than me, and this particular audience’s private space (whiteness, heterosexuality, etc.) is allowed to take up public space.

So, how does this all affect my queerness overall? In the space of opera, I find myself performing as straight, and this performance affects my activist space when fighting for LGBTQIA+ rights in the social justice world. Because I feel the need to pass and mask my queerness when performing opera, I grapple with feeling like I belong in the activist world because I am not always authentic to who I am unlike other queer activists. This change from passing to non-passing hinders my ability to be comfortable in my own skin, at times, especially when I know that because I am bi-sexual, it is easier for me to access privilege in the queer world. This ability to pass and not have to morph into who I really am when performing gives me rights and abilities that other queer identities/minorities do not have.
