I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you
I don't wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you
I've been sleepin' so long in a twenty-year dark night
And now I see daylight, I only see daylight

So am I really the shipper I claim to be?
We are all (well, okay, me then) Emma Woodhouses at heart (Emma,by Jane Austen; worth a detour if you haven’t read it already). Like Emma, when I see an attractive couple who seem to be ‘right’ for each other my instinct is to match-make. Even if in truth they are ‘wrong’ for each other.
I like and admire Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe; I think they are both great actors, Sam just as much as Cait. I think his acting skills have have been overlooked by the people who hand out the major awards. I thought Cait, particularly in 2.07 and 3.10, deserved more than just a nomination for the Golden Globes. Together, as in 1.07, 1.09, 1.11, 3.07 (hope I’ve got the numbers right) and in numerous episodes since, they have made an entirely convincing screen couple. It’s a wonderful love story, Outlander, and I can’t think of any actors who could have performed these roles better.
Off set, Sam and Cait come across as people who have an amazingly real chemistry together. They both make each other laugh, a great way to keep themselves as good friends, if not actual lovers. In many ways, they are better off just as friends and partners than as real life lovers, for passionate love can fade so fast, and even turn to hate. Not a good recipe for the stars of a long-running TV series
Have they been, at least for a while, lovers? I wouldn’t be in the least surprised, indeed, the only surprise would be if they hadn’t been. One can only carry ‘method’ acting so far, and lets face it , they’re both physically ‘hot’ as hell, and although I suspect much of it has indeed been ‘put on’ to help ‘sell’ the show, there’s enough there underneath to tell me that they are, or at least have been, very close. They are certainly very affectionate, and tactile with it, as are so many actors.
I’m not blind to their faults, but then, I’m no plaster saint either (and neither, dear reader, are you). I’m sure after four years of acting together for ten months of the year plus all the rest they must be as aware as anyone, if not more so, of their partner’s every tic and character flaw that grates, flaws which would cause every normal couple to reach for the gin, if nothing worse. Sam and Cait probably see more of each other than most husbands and wives. It’s a high pressure coexistance.
For them to have stayed together this long without a public falling out indicates a rare ability to get along with each other, an affection, a trust and a confidence in each other that has remained once the first excitement and novelty of being in a major TV series has waned, and once that first rush of physical intimacy has passed. To me this indicates a real friendship as well as their being very, very fond of each other, but I’m not surprised they haven’t holidayed together. At least, not to our certain knowledge. ( I don’t count fuzzy pictures and masks as proof, thanks very much). One would need a break, no?
Believe me, I would truly love to see them ‘come out’ as a couple, get married, have a brood of kids and live happily ever after.
Even now, when Caitriona has publicly declared herself engaged (presumably to Tony -it’s a rum way for a newly engaged woman to behave, but then I’ve never felt Caitriona was entirely happy with the way in which Hollywood stars are expected to parade their private lives for the delectation of their fans. Hollyweird is indeed the word). Even now, when Sam’s name has been linked to the fair Ms Mauzy for the last two years.
Yet, I’d still prefer Sam and Cait to be the ones together. I guess that makes me a shipper, albeit in a minor key.
What I am not, however, is the type of shipper who desperately reaches for ‘proof’ that their love is for real, and, where that proof is lacking, invents it. What I am not is the kind of shipper who invents ‘secret marriages’ and ‘secret love children’ , which I find rather nauseous. What I am not is the kind of shipper who thinks they are in reality lovers but are blocked from declaring their love by The Powers That Be.( If such powers exist, they would be telling Sam and Cait to play it up for all it’s worth; isn’t that what Sam once called ‘the pantomime’? )
What I am not is the type of shipper who throws a tantrum whenever their apparent real life partners appear alongside them, which I find rather pathetic, nay , even bathetic. What I am not is the kind of shipper who each week needs to find someone or something new about Outlander, its cast, it crew, it writers, its author and its producers, even its frigging drivers, to hate in order to compensate them for the feeling that they’ve been had for a sucker, fooled, gulled or duped, simply because they had convinced themselves that chemistry they thought they saw off set between Sam and Cait was more real than the reality. However much Sam and Cait may have wittingly, or unwittingly, contributed to that illusion. What I am not is the type of shipper who thinks that because they spent their ‘hard earned money’ on Outlander subscriptions or merchandise, that gives them the right to dictate how Sam and Caitriona run their lives and with whom they chose to go to bed, or even marry. What I am not is the kind of shipper who thinks that acting is all about grasping for fame and grubbing for money.
If that is shipping, then count me out.
But if shipping is hoping that one day what I desire for Sam and Cait finally comes true, then count me in. I like to think though that I’m mature enough to recognise that they may have other, better plans for themselves. It’s their own lives and happiness, after all, that counts. Not my foolish hopes.
Whatever happens, I hope and pray for their happiness and for the continued success of a great acting partnership. I think we can all ‘ship’ that.

Am I going to meet a tall dark stranger, or journey across the sea?
There’s the curved leaf for a journey, but it’s crossed by the broken one that means staying put.
And strangers there are, to be sure, several of them.
And one of them’s your husband, if I read the leaves aright.
