If I don’t make it back... That is not going to happen. And while you’re gone, I will tell [Jemmy] how brave his father is.

Thoughts on Outlander 5.07 - ‘The Ballad of Roger Mac’
Tumblr media
Well, we’ve made it to the back half of this season, and things are finally picking up!  I loved this episode, it’s definitely the best one, so far.  The pacing, the dialogue, the acting, the score, pretty much the whole episode was top-notch.
I was surprised, and a little disappointed, that Roger wasn’t as much of a focus in this episode as the title would suggest.  I’m hoping we get to see Roger’s side of the story in episode 8, maybe with flashbacks and voiceovers?
Anybody recognize the melody from the title card?
Tumblr media
I loved hearing Roger sing ‘Clementine’ to Jemmy.  Both Bree and Roger sing the song to Jemmy throughout The Fiery Cross, so that was a great little nugget for book readers.
I was pretty adamant when the season 5 trailer came out, that the back shot of a woman removing her shift was Brianna, and it turns out I was wrong!  So, I’m eating crow.  In my defense, the warm lighting in the tent made Claire’s hair look red.
At first, when I heard Brianna’s line, in the season 5 trailer, about Alamance being the spark for the American Revolution, I didn’t like it and I didn’t understand why they would change this from the book, in which all the time travelers are completely ignorant of the Regulator movement.  But, I think it made sense in the context of the episode, because it gives Brianna a reason to be with Jamie and Claire and a reason for Roger to visit the Regulator camp (they haven’t established trust between Roger and Jamie yet in the show, so it wouldn’t have made sense for Jamie to send Roger as a peacemaker).  Also, I’m a bit tired of the “let’s try to change big historical events” stuff, so I’m glad this was a short-lived plot device that didn’t go on for multiple episodes with them sitting around trying to figure out how to stop Alamance from happening.
Things that stood out to me during the Jamie in a creek scene: the sound effects of the babbling brook (so peaceful!), Jamie’s wig is still looking great, that was a really big gash on his hand, and I’m glad Sam’s chicken legs were hidden under pants, so I could admire his perfectly sculpted upper body without distraction.
I’m really, really tired of Governor Tryon and his stupid face and voice.  I am not exaggerating when I say the majority of the time that he has been on my TV screen, I am bored out of my freaking mind - I pick up my phone, I stare out the window, I get up for a drink refill.  I really think he could have just written a bunch of letters this season, instead of showing up in person all the time.  Hopefully, we won’t have to see much more of him.  Unless it’s for Jamie and/or Brianna to spit in his face.
I’m wondering why they even bothered to introduce Herman Husband at all back in Episode 2.  Was he even in the background at all in this episode?  Keeping Murtagh alive in order to keep viewers invested in the Regulator storyline was a good idea, but was not executed very well, in my opinion.  I still found all the Regulator stuff in very boring, and I wish it had been more in the background, so that Alamance kind of sneaks up on everyone.  That’s how it felt in the book, with all the characters thinking the Regulator movement wouldn’t amount to anything because it was missing from history textbooks...then BAM Alamance happened and it was very dramatic.
I loved the changes made from the book regarding Roger’s scene with Morag - hugging her instead of kissing her forehead, and punching Buck to protect Morag.  The escalation of that encounter felt natural, but they didn’t make Roger look like an idiot.
I’m on the fence about Graham McTavish playing Buck.  At first, I was excited.  But, now, I’m not so sure.  I haven’t read book 8 yet, so I don’t have a really good idea of Buck’s character.  But, I always pictured him as more of a cowardly man - more stupid or short-sighted with a temper, rather than straight-up brutal.
“I just don’t know which is worse: that he’s missing or getting shot at.”  I really liked this line from Brianna.
So, the legs being dragged in the opening credits are not Jamie’s, but Isaiah Morton’s.
Claire’s syringe is broken! #breengineer
I surprisingly teared up when Murtagh died.  I thought Sam and Duncan acted these scenes very well.  I can see why Sam has said this is his favorite Season 5 episode.  Jamie was definitely the focus, and Sam bore that burden well.  (and I’m relieved that Murtagh will not be taking up screen time the rest of this season.  With Murtagh gone, Jamie will finally have time to bond with Roger.)
I didn’t notice or appreciate the score during the battle scenes until I watched the episode a second time, but I liked it.
Jamie’s anger towards Tryon when he throws the redcoat on the ground is warranted, but I wanted to see some of that same rage from him when they discovered Roger.  Jamie’s body language/facial expression came across as dejected, but not angry.
Sophie, Sophie, Sophie...bravo
Tumblr media
And that’s it.  I was on the edge of my seat for the last 10 minutes of the episode, wondering when we were going to see Roger again.  The dramatic build throughout this episode was very well done.  I was nervous about them killing Murtagh and hanging Roger in the same episode, because I was worried Murtagh’s death would overshadow Roger’s story (like Laoghaire and Frank overshadowed Roger in 4.07).  But, I thought the two were fairly well balanced and given equal weight.  By putting Roger in the episode title, they had me wondering “Where’s Roger?” so much, I didn’t see Murtagh’s death coming.  I think (hope!) Roger will get some spotlight in Episode 8.

We have all seen Jamie "celebrating" his 50th birthday in 5.07... Will Claire have a similar celebration?

They sang us a sorrowful song ... a reflection on Outlander 5.07 "The Ballad of Roger Mac"
They sang us a sorrowful song … a reflection on Outlander 5.07 “The Ballad of Roger Mac”
Once asked to describe what her books were about, Diana Gabaldon responded, “History, warfare, medicine, sex, violence, spirituality, honor, betrayal, vengeance, hope and despair, relationships, the building and destruction of families and societies, time travel, moral ambiguity, swords, herbs, horses, gambling(with cards, dice, lives), voyages of daring, journeys of the entire body and soul,…

Well, I’m interrupting this very serious episode-watching to bring your attention to the fact that this random colonel

was also Jamie Fraser’s butler in “Christmas at Castlebury Hall”.

Ohmygosh they brought Graham McTavish back!!!
Oh, right, I think he’s supposed to be Dougal and Geilis’ son. XD
(Although the character shouldn’t be much older than Brianna, I think...?)

I’ve been so excited about this season of “Outlander” that I’ve been watching it religiously on Sundays...
...except, for some strange reason, this week’s episode (“The Ballad of Roger Mac”). I keep waiting for a good evening to watch it and keep putting it off, until tonight. Given the title, I think we’ve already—finally?—reached that part in the book.
Well, here goes!
