//////////////
A redwood forest is not invisible at night. The blackness covers it but it covers the blackness.
If they had turned Jeffers into a parking lot death would have been
eliminated and birth also. The lights shine 24 hours a day on a parking
lot.
True conservation is the effort of the artist and the private man to
keep things true. Trees and the cliffs in Big Sur breathe in the dark.
Jeffers knew the pain of their breath and the pain was the death of a
first-born baby breathing.
Death is not final. Only parking lots.

DE RERUM VIRTUTE
I.
Sob o azul: amor e desejo e dor,
Dentro do ovo. Acredito que a primeira célula viva
Tinha ecos do futuro nela, e ela sentia
III.
Homero e Shakespeare—
Como eles embelezaram o povo!
V.
Uma luz nos resta: a beleza das coisas, não dos homens;

I.
Here is the skull of a man: a man’s thoughts and emotions
Have moved under the thin bone vault like clouds
Under the blue one: love and desire and pain,
Thunderclouds of wrath and white gales of fear
Have hung inside here: and sometimes the curious desire of knowing
Values and purpose and the causes of things
Has coasted like a little observer air-plane over the images
That filled this mind: it never discovered much,
And now all’s empty, a bone bubble, a blown-out eggshell.
II.
That’s what it’s like: for the egg too has a mind,
Doing what our able chemists will never do,
Building the body of a hatchling, choosing among the proteins:
These for the young wing-muscles, these for the great
Crystalline eyes, these for the flighty nerves and brain:
Choosing and forming: a limited but superhuman intelligence,
Prophetic of the future and aware of the past:
The hawk’s egg will make a hawk, and the serpent’s
A gliding serpent: but each with a little difference
From its ancestors—and slowly, if it works, the race
Forms a new race: that also is a part of the plan
Within the egg. I believe the first living cell
Had echoes of the future in it, and felt
Direction and the great animals, the deep green forest
And whale’s-track sea; I believe this globed earth
Not all by chance and fortune brings forth her broods,
But feels and chooses. And the Galaxy, the firewheel
On which we are pinned, the whirlwind of stars in which our sun is one dust-grain, one electron, this giant atom of the universe
Is not blind force, but fulfils its life and intends its courses. “All things are full of God.
Winter and summer, day and night, war and peace are God.”
III.
Thus the thing stands; the labor and the games go on—
What for? What for? —Am I a God that I should know?
Men live in peace and happiness; men live in horror
And die howling. Do you think the blithe sun
Is ignorant that black waste and beggarly blindness trail him like hounds,
And will have him at last? He will be strangled
Among his dead satellites, remembering magnificence.
IV.
I stand on the cliff at Sovranes creek-mouth.
Westward beyond the raging water and the bent shoulder of the world
The bitter futile war in Korea proceeds, like an idiot
Prophesying. It is too hot in mind
For anyone, except God perhaps, to see beauty in it. Indeed it is hard to see beauty
In any of the acts of man: but that means the acts of a sick microbe
On a satellite of a dust-grain twirled in a whirlwind
In the world of stars ....
Something perhaps may come of him; in any event
He can’t last long. —Well: I am short of patience
Since my wife died ... and this era of spite and hate-filled half-worlds
Gets to the bone. I believe that man too is beautiful,
But it is hard to see, and wrapped up in falsehoods. Michael Angelo and the Greek sculptors—
How they flattered the race! Homer and Shakespeare—
How they flattered the race!
V.
One light is left us: the beauty of things, not men;
The immense beauty of the world, not the human world.
Look—and without imagination, desire nor dream—directly
At the mountains and sea. Are they not beautiful?
These plunging promontories and flame-shaped peaks
Stopping the sombre stupendous glory, the storm-fed ocean? Look at the Lobos Rocks off the shore,
With foam flying at their flanks, and the long sea-lions
Couching on them. Look at the gulls on the cliff wind,
And the soaring hawk under the cloud-stream—
But in the sage-brush desert, all one sun-stricken
Color of dust, or in the reeking tropical rain-forest,
Or in the intolerant north and high thrones of ice—is the earth not beautiful?
Nor the great skies over the earth?
The beauty of things means virtue and value in them.
It is in the beholder’s eye, not the world? Certainly.
It is the human mind’s translation of the transhuman
Intrinsic glory. It means that the world is sound,
Whatever the sick microbe does. But he too is part of it.

Kendra DeColo
Kendra DeColo vive em Nashville, Tennessee e tem dois livros publicados: ‘Thieves in the Afterlife’ (2014) e ‘My Dinner With Ron Jeremy’ (2017).
bonito, cintilando além do reconhecimento,

God is a Capitalist
I, too, want honesty in exchange for my good money, a warm body
to accompany me when I'm lonely,
feeling the way trees must feel absorbing the used-up light
along highways, a song whose human-less pulse undoes me
as kindness undoes me, sometimes getting what I want
and wearing the smug look of a road gleaming from within,
how you know when someone, without meaning to, is telling you the truth—
my sister hustling, her Lucite heels steeped in cash,
each of us loaded with expired magic. I'm talking about a weariness of stars, crooked
hope, the kind perfected in southern hemispheres where tourists go
buying up the spirit of revolution. We all want a lap dance
to mean something, and now, watching her up there
I can't say where she got it from, the drive to keep making something
beautiful out of it, glittering beyond recognition,
and it rips my goddamned heart out, watching it unfold as it must
every night, the story of our naked life.

A graça
Eu quero
fazer amor
cerebral, ela diz agora no escuro. Todo esse espaço reluzente
e nenhuma preliminar.
+++
Last Night on Earth We Go to Wendy’s
Starry-eyed and ravenous, we wait for it
to serenade us like a bullet singing to a wound.
Is this what you meant by romance? Me, scouring the remains
of my life over a pool of ketchup, thick as the spunk of creation
while the city blooms smoke, waiting to be swallowed?
Out of everything, I’ll miss the oily contents of tin cans. Colored wrappers.
A fig eaten like a kiss in a stairwell. Your lips, potable wishes. The quiet
grace of Aphasia, the trans cashier who sells us fish sandwiches, her bright
wand of a smile and galactic tits orbiting the fryer. I want to make mind-
love, she says now to the darkness. All this glittering space
and no foreplay. Is this what you meant by loneliness? That stiff
feeling in my hips like rust and rain, a surgery that allows
the patient to watch. We are waiting for it
with graffitied hearts, to discolor and gouge the walls
of the restroom where stains blossom into gesture, fingerprints, a
deliciousness
hard-earned and wreaking, brought down from the heavens
of grease, and I’m glad for once to have a body with fingernails and genitalia,
a tongue like a squatter’s den that knows every violet edge of evening,
to unfold syllables from the book of silences, where we become
gentle, sipping endless refills, and saying thank you, even when it’s obvious.

CONVERSA SUJA
— Osip Mandelstam
Eu testei todas as camisinhas,
enchi elas com champanhe, imaginei
uma casinha dentro da pontinha delas
onde crianças natimortas caçam vagalumes num terreno molhado,
seus dedos pulsando com luz
toda vez que jogamos Roleta do Coito Interrompido
ou o látex não rasga, uma coreografia
no escuro e a bioluminescência plagiada
as fissuras dentro de mim. Me toque como um assassino
acaricia a escadaria de uma igreja. Diga meu nome
+++
DIRTY TALK
“Listen, even a lullaby can bleed.” — Osip Mandelstam
Say my name like the last bright syllable
of olive in a martini glass, your tongue
an eel deranged with moonlight
squiggling at the bottom of a gasoline-
dark sea. I’ve tested all the condoms,
filled them with champagne, imagined
a tiny house inside the reservoir tip
where unborn children catch fireflies in a wet field,
their fingers pulsing with light
every time we play Pull-Out Roulette
or the latex doesn’t break, a choreography
of blackout and bioluminescence plagiarized
from an oyster’s bristled sheen. Love, we are ancient
as the first people who learned to screw standing up
against a pine tree. Only your murmurs can staunch
the fissures inside me. Touch me like an assassin
strokes the steps of a church. Say my name
until I glow, engorged and radiant
as a tick boasting her blood-swollen
hunger without shame.

ÀS VEZES O TRABALHO DE DEUS É DESLEIXADO MAS SEMPRE VEM A TEMPO
Hoje eu assisti um corvo, com muito
tempo em suas mãos, roubar penas
da cauda dourada de um falcão,
mas que se dane, eu bisbilhotando
ruas suburbanas onde as árvores
absorvem aspirações dos quadros
de desejos dos universitários, raízes
nutridas pela estrume de sonhos
inacabados. A casca grossa me lembra
das mãos do Dr. Phil, tateando nosso
subconsciente como um funcionário de
cabine de pedágio macio, sua nuca calva
brilhando como mapas luminosos onde você pode
encontrar todo ato gravado
da decência humana
e eu não quero me gabar
Fiquei vigiando o monte fresco
e cantei para os embriões, novinhos
em suas conchas instáveis. Arranjei
um giz e desenhei um coração rosa
em volta do lugar, escrevendo
em letras garrafais: Cuidado,
Vida Frágil Aqui —
que é o que eu digo a estranhos
quando minha aura fica fraca
e eu preciso de uma camada extra
de proteção para me estabilizar
através do desenrolar do dia e
de suas atrocidades. Vou apontar
para o meu peito e lembrar
como a alegria sobrevive,
cantarolando através das rachaduras
da graça acidental,
fazendo casa a partir do nada.

SOMETIMES GOD’S WORK IS SLOPPY BUT IT’S ALWAYS ON TIME
Today I watched a crow with too much
time on its hands steal feathers
from a hawk’s golden haunches,
just for the hell of it, stalking
suburban streets whose trees
soak up aspirations from vision
boards of college students, roots
nourished by dregs of unfinished
dreams. The thick bark reminds me
of Dr. Phil’s hands, groping our
subconscious like a smooth toll booth
operator, the back of his bald head
shiny as a lit-up map where you can
find every recorded act
of human decency
and I don’t mean to brag
but I once spent the day
watching over a tuft of tilled earth
where a turtle had laid her eggs,
right in the middle of a busy walkway.
Maybe she was distracted or had a lot
on her plate, but goddamnit,
she got the job done, squeezing
out each leathery wet egg.
After she scuttled off
into the marsh behind a Wendy’s
I stood watch over the fresh mound
and sang to the embryos, brand new
in their woozy shells. I procured
some chalk and drew a pink heart
around the site, writing
in big letter: Caution,
Fragile Life Here —
which is what I say to strangers
when my aura gets dim
and I need an extra layer
of protection to steady me
through the day’s unraveling reels
of atrocities. I’ll point
to my chest and remember
how joy survives,
humming through the cracks
of accidental grace,
making a home out of nothing.

Playlist Para um Striptease
Às vezes quando estou dirigindo,
e o para-brisa está manchado
pela luz do crepúsculo,
eu lembro do meu corpo,
como ele saracoteia involuntário
a forma como a chuva convulsiona
sobre o estacionamento
sempre que o toco.
Minha irmã escolhe
músicas, não pelo ritmo
mas pela emoção, batendo palmas
asteriscos para suas costas,
dançando como se estivesse submersa
para a música fazer
homens se sentirem menos finitos como eles
veem as suas palavras traduzidas
entre gestos, pernas laqueadas
sob luzes negras, imitando
opiáceos e boca machucadas.
Não há lugar onde eu tenha dormido
sem esculpir suas iniciais,
às vezes confundindo
as sílabas dos nosso nome.
O que eu quero dizer é que
cada naufrágio mantém algo
em seu corpo, partículas impulsionada
por um sonho, um hatchback branco
em outra cidade guardando a cartilagem
da minha pele de vinte anos,
engessada e implorando
para um apagão, para ser anônimo
como um corpo numinoso
e encharcado de luz azul,
dançando lento o suficiente
para dissolver, tornando-se
belo de novo.

Playlist For a Striptease
Sometimes while driving,
the windshield smeared
with late afternoon light,
I remember my body,
how it shook involuntarily
the way rain convulses
above a parking lot
whenever I was touched.
My sister chooses
songs, not for their rhythm
but emotion, hands palming
asterisks to her back,
dancing as if underwater
to music that makes
men feel less finite as they
watch her translate words
into gesture, legs lacquered
under black lights, mimicking
opiate and bruised mouths.
There isn’t a place I’ve slept
without carving her initials,
sometimes confusing
the syllables of our name.
What I mean to say is
every wreckage keeps something
of the body, particles boosted
from a dream, the white hatchback
in another city guarding gristle
of my twenty-year old skin,
plastered and begging
for a black out, to be anonymous
as a body numinous
and drenched in blue light,
dancing slow enough
to dissolve, to become
beautiful again.

FANTASIA
vindo a descer? Eu costumava seguir
o motorista do Audi prata
era Ron Jeremy.
Eram as Grandes Festas
e as ruas estavam abarrotadas
de folhas brilhantes. Esperei
a noite inteira para que ele
saísse, imaginando quão bom
seria: nós dois
em um restaurante comendo ovos
cozidos, falando sobre a última
vez que nos sentimos verdadeiramente vistos.
Seus olhos verdes crepitariam
de gratidão e reconhecimento —
como dois prepúcios como nós
tem tanta sorte
Eu não sei, ele diria
tomando um longo gole —
Mas ele não me viu
afivelada e esperando
e aliás, eu não tenho estrutura
pra esse tipo de prazer.

Fantasy
Like a perv in a pickle park,
do you ever feel you’re standing outside
your own life, watching the scenes
unfold like a montage of favorite
Bang Bus episodes, highlight
reels of bukaki-reverence,
open-sore epiphanies
and the inevitable spermicidal
come-down? I used to follow
nice cars on highways, get off
at their exit, split
before the roads turned
residential but one time I made it
to a small town’s enormous
synagogue and, true story,
the driver of the silver Audi
was Ron Jeremy.
It was a High Holiday
and the street was loaded
with bright leaves. I waited
all night for him to come
out, imagining how good
it would feel: the two of us
at a diner eating soft-boiled
eggs, talking about the last
time we felt truly seen.
His green eyes would sputter
with gratitude and recognition―
how two shmucks like us
got to be so lucky
I don’t know, he’d say
taking a long sip―
But he didn’t see me
buckled-in and waiting
and besides, I’m not built
for that kind of pleasure.

CARTA DE RUPTURA PARA MEU CLITÓRIS
Só porque não saímos
mais não significa
que você é uma única joia sintética
afixada ao umbigo da dançarina,
a última moeda dentro do cintilar
decadente do caça-níquéis.
diferente, e eu irei me mover pelo mundo
seca como um centavo. Mas você, clitóris,
terá direito a cada sussurro
de prazer, uma jukebox com uma pequena
gravação repetindo-se por dentro.
+++
Break-Up Letter to My Clitoris
Just because we don’t hang out
anymore doesn’t mean
you aren’t the single synthetic jewel
affixed to a dancer’s umbilicus,
last coin thumbed into a slot
machine’s decadent gleam.
To be a gargoyle above your
baroque foyer is more magnificent
than a water birth in the Playboy
Mansion, more opulent
than finding free condoms
in the back of a Limousine
but when I rise from the climate-
controlled leather seats
and leave behind a sleek stain,
it is a desolation. To think, one day
my fluids will take on a different
hue, and I will move through the world
dry as a penny. But you, clitoris,
will be entitled to every susurrus
of joy, a jukebox with one tiny
record looping inside.

GOLD SOUNDZ
e ainda continuam amigos no dia seguinte. A verdade

Gold Soundz
For E.M.W.
I can’t stop singing that Pavement song,
the one that sounds like an old lime green
Volvo and bottles of Old E, like autumn
in the suburbs where rich kids do bad things
to each other in their enormous empty houses
and are still friends the next day. The truth
is that most of us would be fine, except
the ones who weren’t, the guy I dated
with the shaved head and rotten front tooth
who lived in the woods with two pitbulls,
Honey Bear and Jack, and punched a hole
in my bedroom wall before he disappeared.
Or the friend who stopped taking her lithium
after college and married a man who months later
stabbed her in the backseat of a car, left her
bleeding to death on the side of an unmarked road
and I think we used to sing this song sometimes
on our drive to Walden Pond where we’d swim
topless and yell at the lurkers, the man
who once pulled it out and we laughed
at his sad gesture, and it’s her laughter
I’m hearing now, her head resting on my shoulder
on the drive home, eating an apple
that had rested between my legs.
She was the kind of friend who’d laugh
that the apple smelled like pussy
and eat it anyway.

O Guitarrista (Wes Montgomery & James Clay, Hollywood 1958)
desvie, o saxofonista inclinado
na curva da respiração, o arco
reluzindo nos seus lábios, quase
desajeitado, pernas grossas, a precisão

The Guitarist (Wes Montgomery & James Clay, Hollywood 1958)
It is the look of terror on his face—
the glossy flank of an open grand piano
untouched & muscled with light
behind them—that makes me turn
away, the saxophonist leaning
into the curve of breath, the arc
glinting from his lips, almost
unwieldy, thick-limbed, the precision
of a volt striking the ground. He is cruel,
I think, his lips gripping the brass
mouth & wood tongue, because
he knows he can’t be touched
as the fighter who doubles
inside the ring, winged fits
of blood & electricity humming
like a halo around the near-corpse
of the man he’s whipped, fists
demarcating notes into the haze
between them, the guitarist’s mouth
& eyes swollen with knowledge
he is ill-equipped, his left hand
a culled constellation, flaccid above
the strings as if to form the chord
of a blistering universe, the first
cut into darkness, deliberate chaos
of the child who pretends to play
lifting the wooden body to his chest,
who knows what stirs in his cells
has no name, the crook & jag, blue
smoke, a bud opening in his abdomen
swelled to the size of hope as we become
the shape of whatever we hold
in our hands when asked to lift up
what we cannot bear to touch.

Craca

Barnacle
Barnacle, I would like to be remade
in your image; hollowed tooth, dress of calcium, blue-salt tongue.
Your language of echoes colonizes the earth’s cold thighs. I want it
as I sometimes want the uncomplicated diminuendo of my life,
to disperse and fade, blurred into the music of bees, thirst, words
scratched into plexiglass, this being human such a dirty
business. I crave your sterile logic, philosopher’s beard glittering
with fleas. You, clutter of fossils, oxidized starlight, you fist
of loaded dice, three-card hustler of the sea, rapture of knuckles
along the mouth. You suicide letter of glee, treble cleft
kiss, you alphabet of orgasms, mineral lung, you bootlegger
of miracles, preacher with a lisp, you stripper’s robe
on the dressing room floor, you slow-cooker of meth,
glint of gold in the blues singer’s mouth, you rickshaw
vanity plate, you ten-part harmony grinding on a street corner—
Your solemn voice proliferates like spores, your junky arm
bloated with jewels, your face of scars made of history and indifference—
You breeder of ghosts, you sprawl of eyes, you cemetery
of unborn children haunting my small city.
