Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died four days after being doused in petrol and set on fire by her former partner, authorities announced.

Cheptegei -- who had been receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret City, Kenya -- succumbed to her injuries after sustaining burns to almost 80% of her body in the attack, which occurred on Sunday.

Cheptegei was doused with a can of gasoline before being set on fire during an argument over land, according to a police report. Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital announced Cheptegei died at the age of 33 after her organs failed on Thursday, according to hospital spokesperson Owen Menach.

"We have learnt of the sad passing of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei following a vicious attack by her boyfriend," Donald Rukare, head of the Uganda Olympic Committee, announced Thursday on X. "May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women. This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure."

The Ugandan marathon runner had competed in the women's marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing in 44th place with a season's best time of 2:32:14, just a month before the fatal attack.

She had a personal best in the marathon of 2:22:47 set in December 2022.

The Ugandan athlete had been living in northwestern Kenya, with her father saying she recently bought land in Trans Nzoia County to build a home and be closer to Kenya's athletics training centers, according to The Associated Press.

Cheptegei's Kenyan partner, who allegedly carried out the attack -- identified as Dickson Ndiema -- is said to have sustained "serious burns" in the attack and is receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The Uganda Athletics Federation said it is "deeply saddened" by the passing of Cheptegei.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence," the federation announced on Thursday. "As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice."

The incident is the latest in a string of domestic violence cases against female athletes in Kenya.

In 2021, Kenyan distance runner Agnes Tirop was found stabbed to death in her home in Iten, in northwest Kenya. Just a few weeks earlier, the rising athletics star had set a new women's 10 kilometer road running record at the "Adizero: Road to Records" event in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Tirop's husband -- Ibrahim Rotich -- was subsequently arrested and charged with her murder. The case is currently ongoing.

Just a year later, Kenyan-Bahraini athlete Damaris Muthee Mutua, 28, was found murdered at her home in the same town, with Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations saying her cause of death was strangulation.

Kenyan police launched a manhunt for Mutua's Ethiopian boyfriend -- Eskinder Hailemaryam Folie -- who is the main suspect in her murder and is alleged to have fled Kenya.

Cheptegei, 33, suffered horrendous burns to 80 per cent of her body in Sunday's brutal attack that was reportedly carried out by Dickson Ndiema, according to medical officials. 

She was rushed to the intensive care unit at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, but the facility's acting director Dr Owen Menach confirmed Cheptegei died late last night after all her organs failed.

Why Richardson was back at the old Apartment wasn't important. So maybe it was because Cornelius had called them incompetent, an egomaniac and self absorbed with delusions of grandeur for weeks on end. Maybe Richardson had snapped back, just once, and said at least their delusions didn't kill anyone. Maybe it was the way Cornelius had shut down and didn't even bother kicking Richardson out because fuck him right? Dick was just his fucking husband.

Anyway. The point is. The fucking point is- the Millenials and Tigers went from fighting it out in the finals to being kicked out barely a week into postseason. Richardson's sure the... Moist Talkers or Wings or whatever were having fun. But the Millenials and Tigers had a longstanding tradition of pickling their immortal livers and trashing whichever house they're in at the smallest excuse, and the end of elections was as good as any.

No one even cared Dickson was in the Apartment looking for his next mistake- it takes him a shitty screwdriver, half a kegstand and a round of beer pong to go screw it and stand next to Famous Owens. Who was, probably, gorgeous, Dickson thinks, if not for the way half their division talked about them.

What matters is this-

Maybe Famous really is into homewrecking because it only takes ten minutes before they've got Richardson on their lap, a bit of molly passed to Dickson with their tongue licking into his mouth.

And it was painfully easy, for once, to be able to look at Famous and call them pretty with their hands around Richardson's waist. When those hands, calloused and surprisingly strong, pulled them into one of the bedrooms.

Richardson wraps a hand around Owens' shoulders, and it is divine when Owens makes their hips grind against each other, and it's easy to beg them to touch him and under the haze of molly, it's good enough.

Richardson, upon pain of death, will admit he understands Famous' reputation.

In fact, dying would have been preferable when Scorpler fucking slams the door open, jolting Richardson awake. Richardson lets out a groan, as the horrible fucking light of day tries to open his eyes. "What the f-"

"Good morning, Scorpler," Famous cuts in. Richardson is not awake, but he musters enough energy to squint at Famous. The fucker's already sitting up, their head a rat nest and sprawled out like a king. Even with the eyebags and pillow creases.

"Shut the fuck up and get in the car," Scorpler snaps and, fuck, Dickson had never hesrd that from Scorpler before. Was their voice fucking trembling? Underneath the hissing and the fucking scorpion mouth things clicking, there's a tremor Richardson has never heard before.

Slowly, half asleep still, Richardson starts to rewind through all the bullshit gossip Dom texts him.

Famous pats Richardson back- even groggy and barely sober, it feels contemptuous, which is another thing Dickson already hates about them. "I can't leave poor Dix," and that was even weirder, "alone, now can I, darling."

"Wha-" "Famous, is that what this is about?!"

Dickson jolts as Scorpler snaps at Owens, louder and sharper than he thought the scorpion capable of, and nearly rolls onto the floor with their dick out. The other two ignore him. Fucking great.

Dickson snaps his mouth shut. Famous seemed as unbothered as ever while Scorpler.. Stops whatever scorpions do and stops hissing.

Richardson grabs his fucking pants as Scorpler crosses the room.

"Famous-" and fucking hell, Richardson didn't know Scorpler could sound that soft either. The scorpion always had that veneer to them, the kind of thing Richardson thought was as bad as Owens'. They definitely did when Dickson had slipped and called them babe and Famous had answered by slipping their pants off and shutting Richardson up.

"Enough. Richardson, sit the fuck down."

Richardson does not move for a moment.

Then they fucking booked it, just as Scorpler sits on the bed to hold Famous fucking Owens' hand with the weirdest, most tender expression-

"Better get out of here Dick," and of course it's Dom. Of fucking course. And Richardson is fucking naked with their jeans awkwardly held over their dick.

Richardson yelps. He's not afraid to admit. He turns around, fumbling into his jeans. "Fuck, did you know they were like this?" Richardson complains as he zips up. When he turns around, Dom looks at him with a sort of pitying amusement that makes Richardson frown even more. Hidden behind the couch, Nagomi Meng starts fucking laughing.

"Confesses to Firing Building," Owen Sound Sun. September 2, 1913. Page 3. ---- Wesley Russell, 18 years of age, and a grandson of Constable Russell of Walkerton, was arrested last Wednesday by Provincial Detective Reburn charged with setting lire to the stables barns of the Hartley Hotel, Walkerton, on August 11th, and to the Queen's Hotel on August 18th and 19th. Russell was lodged in the Walkerton jail, and after an examination by the detective confessed to having started the Hartley fire, but denied all knowledge of the fires at the Queen's Hotel. For the past month Walkerton has been in a state of fear owing to the numerous incendiary fires throughout the town. The most serious of these was the Hartley fire, when, on Monday, August 11th, the stables and barns of the hotel were entirely destroyed. On Monday, August 11th, two attempts were made to set fire the the Queen's Hotel, and the following day another attempt was made. All, however, were discovered he- fore the flames could gain any headway. The local police were unable to find any clue to the perpetrator, and final- ly the people of the town asked Crown Attorney Dickson to place a man on the case, He notified the Attorney General, who detailed Detective Re- burn on the case, and the result was the arrest of Russell, The detective is not satisfied that was Russel was the only pyromaniac, and is still working on the case, and expects to make an- other arrest shortly, Russell, who claims to have no motive for the crime, told the detective that he went up into the loft of Hartley's stable and threw a lighted match into the hay. As soon as the hay caught fire he ran away.

Poetic License

For my Poetic License assignment, I have decided to use the poem Fire and Brimstone, by Sue Owen. This poem has an over-looming influence of concepts such as the Devil and angels, by using them almost literally as onlookers of the events being described in the poem. Fire and Brimstone describes a smoggy world, dirtied by pollution. The poem describes the Devil looking at the world being corrupted by the pollution created by mankind, and how he takes joy in seeing the evils caused by humanity. The poem describes waters that have become dirty, and the sky has become the same. Chimneys are described as puffing poisonous smoke out of them and birds are described as being choked by the polluted air from said chimneys. The poem ends with they sky turning red from pollution and that angels would never want to land on this polluted and destroyed ground.

This poem was created to show the evils caused by human pollution on Earth and uses the Devil as an easily identifiable evil force and shows how he takes satisfaction in the evils caused by man as a way of showing what scale of evil is being done. The poem also gives descriptions of how the world is being destroyed by human pollution, such as the previously mentioned waters, sky, and birds being harmed by pollution, as a way to further emphasize what damages are being done by humanity. And finally, it uses the angels as a way of showing how far gone the world has become, that the purest beings would never want to come to the land of pollution and destruction.
