Kai & His Tragic Nature.

I often give Kai a ton of shit because he’s sort of the worst with few to no morals, problems with restraining his emotions, addiction, desire for violence, etc.

But… Sometimes I also remember just how awful it was to grow up surrounded by a family that didn’t want him, who told him that often, and only cared about appearances. Although he spent a lot of his time trying to rebel against his parents, he spent a good amount of time trying to please them when he was younger, too. His parents didn’t care about him as a person, though, only that he fulfilled his position as an heir to the Van Doren family. When they saw he couldn’t do that, they threw him away. In truth, he isn’t angry at his parents for doing what they did to him. He agrees with it, even— thinks they were right. In the depths of his heart, he only wishes he could’ve been the son they wanted.

As such, he truly believes he has no worth and no longer believes in forming strong bonds with others because he was so isolated growing up. Anyone he befriended, his parents would turn against him through their influence. He had no one. He was always alone. No one asked him how he felt or why he acted out. No one tried to understand him. Seeing his parents cut everyone off from him taught him to do the same, even if it hurts him deeply as an extrovert.

Without any way to manage his emotions, things got progressively worse. He turned to unhealthy ways of releasing his emotions (violence, addiction, running away, sex, suppression) because that’s literally all he had. His emotions built up far past the point where he could control them and he ended up lashing out, causing destruction to himself and others. He can’t talk about his emotions because he simply does not have the language for it. No one ever cared to ask him about his feelings, so how is he supposed to give voice to them?

His most prevalent emotions that twist into his anger and hatred? Shame, disgust (for himself), guilt, and helplessness. He thinks he can’t do anything positive, that he can only destroy, so at every turn, he self-sabotages, whether that be by cutting someone off or feeding his addictions. He doesn’t even do it consciously anymore— it’s the only thing he knows. He wants to be better, but doesn’t believe he can be.

Kai yearns for acceptance and connection, wants it so bad it hurts. For someone to see him and not flinch away from his sharp edges. But now that he’s so far gone and has turned himself into a monster, he knows he’ll never get it. He knows there will never be a place in the world for him, so he seeks out death in everything he does.

The worst part of it all is if he was accepted as a kid, he could’ve been one of the world’s most empathetic, loving people. He would’ve been playful. Funny. Sensitive. Caring. Thoughtful. Charming. Intelligent. Talented. He could’ve had it all, but instead, he destroyed himself.

There’s only a hollow shell left of what he could’ve been. He’s struggled through so much pain and rejection, it’s difficult to fathom. Perhaps it’s understandable, then, that more than anything, he wants to die.

And he will— he won’t live to see his late 20s.
