Who's got good eyesight then? This is a section of old growth pine from the roof of an Oxford college building, built in 1911. I've sanded it to 360 grit and got busy with a magnifying glass and a pin in an endeavour to count the growth rings, of which I believe there are at least 360 (surely a coincidence) in just 10cm (4") of timber!! In terms of growth rings this might be the oldest sample in my collection. At my work this evening we hosted a Repair Cafe, with volunteers from Abingdon Carbon Cutters. I'm told it was mostly sharpening jobs but we fixed a few electrical items too, with 29 repairs completed overall. I'm really happy to be part of an organisation that encourages us to all reduce our waste. This being the season when many folks start sowing I've today been making some of last year's coracle lath off-cuts into garden plant labels. Approx 300mm long x 35mm wide these smoothed strips of ash can be easily written on with chalk, canyon, pencil, paint or permanent marker, and if you put oil or varnish on afterwards they could be used for the same crop over multiple seasons. For the longest lifespan they're best taken out of the ground when the crop is lifted, cleaned of mud and stored in the dry until next you need them. After a year of Coracle making courses I usually have a big pile of rejected laths and off-cuts, so the following spring they all get fed through my thicknesser and made into these handy garden planting labels, which are popular in all of the shops I supply. Previously I've bundled then up with coloured wrappings, but was recently introduced to the more subtle brown paper above, which I think I prefer. Today started with a beautiful air dried ash plank that became 14 blanks for cereal bowls, and had now ended with me sat in front of the fire having just bundled up the 325 wooden plant labels and 170 gift tags that I made this afternoon - all utilising discarded ash laths from the Coracle making courses that I've run through the summer.
