DKZ’s Park Jaechan is excited for his first historical drama! Memories from filming "Check in Hanyang": “The senior actors took great care of me.” [ Kstyle 🇯🇵 Interview ]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First challenge in a historical drama! “I was excited to work with my senior co-stars.”
What kind of drama is Check in Hanyang? Please also introduce the character you played.
Park Jaechan: This drama portrays four young people who experience various events in the same place, deepening their bonds, reaffirming their friendship, and gradually growing closer.
The character I played, Ko Sura, is filled with a strong sense of responsibility, believing that he must rebuild his family as the pillar of the household. He is a passionate person at all times.
What made you decide to take on this role?
Park Jaechan: Since this was my first time challenging myself with a historical drama, I naturally became interested in it. The opportunity to create a great project with senior actors also made me want to take on this role.
What should viewers pay attention to?
Park Jaechan: The four main characters are called the “Haona Four” in the drama. At first, they are wary of each other, but as they face various incidents together, they deepen their bonds and become trusted companions. That journey is something to look out for.
Tumblr media
While playing Go Sura, what aspects of the character did you find particularly appealing?
Park Jaechan: Sura is a very straightforward character. However, after meeting the “Haona Four,” he gradually learns the value of friendship and begins to open his heart. Watching him transform into a loyal friend over time is what I find most appealing about him.
Go Sura begins working as an intern officer at “Yongcheonru” in order to rebuild his fallen family. If you were in the same situation, how do you think you would act?
Park Jaechan: I think I would also try my best to join Yongcheonru, just like Sura. Since I share the same desire to protect my family, I would work hard to fulfill the tasks given to me.
Comparing yourself to your character, what similarities and differences do you see?
Park Jaechan: One similarity would be that I have a hard time opening up to people I meet for the first time… I’m actually really shy (laughs). However, unlike Sura, I don’t strictly follow a set way of doing things, nor do I feel like I always have to do what’s “right.” I actually prefer a more flexible approach.
Tumblr media
While acting, were there any aspects you paid special attention to or put extra effort into?
Park Jaechan: I felt that Sura’s emotions were incredibly complex. At times, he acts as if the "Haona Four" means everything to him, yet at the same time, he worries about his family. He also struggles to stay rational, believing that he must pass the Yongcheonru exam at all costs. Since he experiences so many emotional conflicts, I paid special attention to how I expressed them.
Was there anything new that you challenged yourself with in this project?
Park Jaechan: Rather than taking on something entirely new, I always feel a sense of responsibility toward the characters I play. I constantly thought about what kind of expressions would best bring out Sura’s true nature.
In the drama, despite being surrounded by three troublemakers, Sura gradually opened up to them. How did you analyze his change in mindset, given that he initially had such a strong sense of justice and was always in pursuit of what was right?
Park Jaechan: At first, he really sees Deoksu, Junhwa, and Lee Eun as troublemakers who are completely unreliable, right? (laughs). But as time passes, Sura starts to rely on them as well—there are moments when they help him, and even in life-threatening situations, he survives thanks to them. Through these experiences, I think he gradually learned to trust them and open his heart.
The set was full of fun and laughter! “Gunjoo’s ad-libs were just too funny…”
Tumblr media
What do you think is most appealing about Lee Eun and Hong Deoksu, who were central to the story?
Park Jaechan: Lee Eun is a very profound character. He helps people from behind the scenes without them realizing it, and at decisive moments, he becomes the strongest support, leading everyone forward. He hides his high status, but he helps everyone as they struggle to get through life at Yongcheonru. I found that aspect of him very appealing.
As for Deoksu, he is incredibly intelligent and reliable. His determination to perfectly achieve whatever he sets out to do was really admirable.
Go Sura was portrayed as the person Deoksu trusted the most among the Haona Four. Do you have any memorable stories from filming with Kim Jieun?
Park Jaechan: I think Jieun was the mood-maker on set! She always brought lots of snacks and food to share with us. When we arrived at the set, she would encourage us by saying, “Let’s do our best today!” and helped boost our morale.
Honestly, when I first met her, I thought she was just a kind older sister. I never imagined she would take on such a strong leadership role on set. But once filming began, she really stepped up as a leader, which surprised me but also made me feel incredibly grateful.
Tumblr media
Your collaboration with Bae Inhyuk was also a hot topic. Do you have any memorable experiences from the set?
Park Jaechan: Since Inhyuk had already done many historical dramas, I learned a lot just by watching his acting. From his way of speaking to his gestures, there were so many things I could use as a reference. He was probably the most well-informed person on set. Whenever I had a question, I would immediately run to him for help (laughs). He was calm, decisive, and very reliable.
It’s said that Jung Gunjoo’s ad-libs were a huge hit on set. Was there anything surprising about him compared to your first impression?
Park Jaechan: When I first met Gunjoo, I thought, “Wow, he’s so dignified and cool!” But now, he feels more like a playful and lovable older brother (laughs). It was always hard to keep a straight face while filming with him. He constantly came up with hilarious ad-libs, which made the scenes even more entertaining.
If you could play a different character besides your own, who would it be?
Park Jaechan: I’m not sure if I could pull it off, but I’d like to try playing Cheon Bang Ju, the character portrayed by Kim Uiseong. He is the most powerful figure and has everything at his disposal, so I think it would be interesting to take on such a role at least once.
How did you spend your downtime while waiting on set?
Park Jaechan: During long waiting times, especially during location shoots in the countryside, we would eat together, have coffee, and enjoy snack time. Those little moments gave us the energy we needed.
Tumblr media
If you were to rate your satisfaction with the filming of Check in Hanyang on a scale of 100, what would you give it?
Park Jaechan: I’d say about 70 points… I regret that, because of my shyness, I wasn’t able to get close to everyone at the beginning. As filming progressed, I started feeling a great sense of synergy with the team, which made me even more disappointed in my initial self.
You are recognized as a rising young actor. Is there any experience or project that changed your life or served as a turning point?
Park Jaechan: Every project I’ve been a part of has been a huge learning experience for me, so it’s difficult to choose just one. Check in Hanyang is also a project where I learned a lot. Every time I take on a new role, I feel like I’ve encountered another truly valuable project. That’s why all of them are meaningful and important to me.
Since the start of filming for Check in Hanyang, have you developed any new hobbies or interests?
Park Jaechan: Recently, I’ve been focusing on exercise. On my days off, I sometimes meet up with Gunjoo to work out together. I always liked exercising, but I feel like I’ve become even more passionate about it.
Japan has the best atmosphere no matter how many times I visit! "There’s still something I haven’t been able to do…"
Tumblr media
Check in Hanyang has been loved by many viewers in Japan. What are your impressions of Japan?
Park Jaechan: I’ve had many opportunities to visit Japan, and I really love experiencing its unique retro aesthetic. Above all, the atmosphere is amazing! Even something as simple as a random street has a certain charm, and I also love the city nightscapes. Every time I visit, I get excited and feel refreshed—Japan is that kind of country for me.
If you visit Japan again, is there something you’d like to eat or do?
Park Jaechan: I really want to go to an amazing tempura rice bowl (tendon) restaurant! I’ve been to Japan multiple times, but that’s still one thing I haven’t been able to do yet (laughs). I also love yakiniku, so if I get another chance to visit, I definitely want to eat that as well. Honestly, I love almost all Japanese food (laughs).
Do you have a favorite Japanese word, or have you learned any new Japanese words recently?
Park Jaechan: I learned the word “悔しい (kuyashii)” (frustrating/regretful). I picked it up when I was in Japan for a DKZ schedule, while joking around with the members (laughs). Fans really loved a video I filmed with Jonghyeong!
Lastly, do you have a message for Japanese viewers?
Park Jaechan: To all the Japanese viewers! We worked really hard and had a lot of fun filming Check in Hanyang, so I hope the energy from the set reaches you as well. Please continue to show Check in Hanyang lots of love! And please send lots of love and support to Jaechan too!

DKZ's Jaechan: 'Thanks to fans, I'm growing. Living in the present, not the past' [Interview ③]
Tumblr media
Do you have a most memorable scene that hasn't faded from your mind during your entertainment career?
▶️It would have to be during my debut. We wore these jumpsuits, each member in a different color. I was in red, feeling like a Power Ranger. That's the most memorable. At the time, I thought it was ridiculous clothing, but looking back, I think when else would I wear something like that? Thanks to that, the phrase 'the guy who knows how to have fun' became our team's slogan. I always cherish experiences. With experience, you always gain something.
What does growth and development mean to Jaechan?
▶️It seems to be the reason for living. When a new year comes, I pledge to become a better version of myself. If I feel like I've grown even a little compared to the previous year, I consider it a well-spent year. Also, fans have been turning things I've only imagined into reality since my debut, giving me awards, and allowing me to hold fan meetings. Feeling the love from many people, when I meet fans, I want to show them better things, tell them better things, so I strive to improve even more out of a desire to give back more to them.
What was 2023 like for Jaechan?
▶️It was a bit of a restful year. After receiving so much love in 2022, I felt like I needed a break. It was a year to gather my thoughts, take a breather, rather than rushing to work harder. It was a year to find what I really want to do and gradually suppress any overexcitement.
Tumblr media
I'm curious about Jaechan's days off.
▶️I enjoy exercising, but I also cherishes moments of stillness. Recently, I went on a temple stay, attracted by the aroma and the desire to experience phytoncides. Although it was a fulfilling time for personal growth, I found myself with too much free time and ended up cutting short my planned 2-night, 3-day stay (laughs). Nevertheless, I gained valuable insights. The monks advised letting go of attachments to everything. Initially, I thought it impossible to let go of attachments in modern society. However, I believes that reducing attachments could be beneficial for me in various ways, so I'm determined to make an effort.
Where does Jaechan currently stand, and what destination is he heading towards?
▶️I don't dwell on the past; I think about the future. Instead of dwelling on past moments or regrets, I ponder, 'What should I do next?' I used to be full of ambition and passion. However, I've come to realize that pushing too hard can wear me out. It seems that things go better when I have a peaceful mind. Sometimes, pushing too hard can make things seem more awkward, but when I have a peaceful mind, people seem to see me more naturally, and I've become someone who prefers to be natural.
Plans for future activities? Do you have any goals set for this year?
▶️As DKZ, it's been quite a while since our last comeback, and we're currently preparing for it. However, I can't guarantee exactly when we'll be able to show it. Our team's goal is to finish that work quickly and come back in a good form. As an actor, I'm striving to do well in the current filming project and show a better side of myself. It's my dream to find characters that I can excel in.

201102 Yves for Teen Vogue “When we ask 23-year-old Yves why she chose her first photo, she replies honestly, ‘I actually didn’t know we [could send selfies to Teen Vogue], so I chose this photo I took around midnight while waiting for my turn during the “Why Not?” music video shoot. It was just before the last scene and all of our members gathered together in our white dresses and the quiet sounds that the night made. The moon was hanging there above all of us. It looked like a movie. I felt alive because of the smell of the dirt, trees and midnight air. I shook a little bit while taking the photo [so it’s a little blurry], but it has a lot of memories attached to it.’ “For the ‘Why Not?’ photo… ‘I chose this photo for those who are not a stan of Yves... that’s basically a love gun to make people stan me. Olivia Hye took this photo with different angles. She tried her best. Choerry and Olivia Hye had a competition to see who could take the best pictures of me, and Olivia Hye won.’ “‘My favorite part of preparing our new album was that I think I became more mature, more like… I grew up while I was waiting for the comeback. It was hard for me to empty my mind slowly because I always think too much. But now I have the courage to do it,’ Yves says. ‘I think carefully about a worry, from beginning to the end, and if it’s not something that I can solve, I stop worrying about it, put down, and focus on getting better. Then, I can concentrate on what I have to do. As a team, we depend on each other and became stronger [as we prepared]. We think more about the group itself, rather than [about ourselves as individuals.]’ “When asked what advice she’d give to Orbits having a difficult time, Yves says, ‘I watched a k-drama called The Light In Your Eyes and that really helped me. The most touching line was, “Life is worth living, even if it’s not a big day and a small day comes. Don’t ruin the present because of the past full of regrets and an unstable future. Live today. You deserve it!” It was comforting to me and at the same time, I really wanted to say this to our Orbits. I am dazzled every day by the light that Orbits give me. And it will continue to be.’”
