A Glimpse Beyond the Purple Rain: Remembering Prince in a Different Light.

As the autumn leaves began their fiery dance in the late 1980s, a moment forever etched in my memory unfolded high above the clouds on a flight back to Minneapolis.

I, a bodyguard in the service of the enigmatic Prince, found myself in a rare, quiet conversation with the artist who had captivated the world.

The Minnesota State Fair was drawing near, its allure as one of the country's grandest celebrations not lost on me.

I spoke of it with the excitement of a child, recounting the vivid tapestry of sounds, smells, and sights that awaited. The fair was a mosaic of life, a place where joy was unbridled and free.

Then, Prince cloaked in his usual aura of mystery, turned to me, his eyes reflecting a longing that words could barely capture. "I wish I could go," he said softly.

The weight of his words hung in the air, a poignant reminder of the chasm between his world and the one he observed from afar.

In a moment of naive empathy, I blurted out, "Well, we can make that happen." But as quickly as the words escaped, I realized their folly. With a wistful smile, Prince replied, "You and I both know that wouldn't be a good idea."

His voice had a profound sadness, a resignation to a fate he had long accepted. "Those days for me are long gone," he continued. "Sometimes I wish I could do the things that normal people do, but I can't."

In that exchange, far from the roar of adoring fans and the spotlight's glare, I saw a side of Prince seldom revealed to the world.

Here was a man who, beneath the layers of fame and glitz, yearned for the simple, unattainable pleasures of anonymity.

Despite shaping an era with his music, he became a spectator to the everyday joys that elude the grasp of those touched by fame.

As we remember Prince, the icon, the legend, let us not forget the man who, in quiet moments, longed for a taste of the ordinary, a brief escape from the purple rain that forever poured upon him.

His music will forever echo in the annals of time, but these unseen, tender fragments of his humanity paint the truest portrait of the artist we loved and admired.

This morning I rode my bicycle to the Minneapolis Uptown Art Fair. It's been several years since I've attended.

Most of the art is interesting. People watching is good. There are plenty of food and beverage trucks/stands. And I had nothing else going on today.

There is a free bicycle valet service. Riders leave bikes at a fenced-in area with people monitoring everything. No need to lock. I unclipped my pannier bag and carried it with me like a man-purse. It contained some bottles of water and my regular glasses (so I could switch out with sunglasses). My heavy, urban bike lock and a cable were in the bag. I didn't think to leave them with the bike. The bag got uncomfortable to carry after a while.

Several artists do paintings or drawings of the Minneapolis skyline. I always like those. The artisanal, hand-made, all-natural bars of soap interest me too. Today I didn't buy any, but other times I get some despite them being pricey. I saw some really beautiful dining tables made from enormous, solid chunks of wood for the table top.

This set of drinking fountains running from a fire hydrant looked cool (figuratively and literally).

I got paella from this stand. It was delicious and expensive. But my economics degree tells me that with a short, steady line the owner has a pretty solid price point.

All the food and beverage places are up front about expecting tips these days. There's not really any service involved. "Here is your bowl of food. We don't have tables and chairs, so you'll have to stand somewhere. Help yourself to napkins. So would you like to add 15, 20, or 25% to price?"

The tall, narrow shelves of pottery make me nervous. People tend to look one way and walk another. Children and dogs are everywhere. Yet I didn't see or hear a single vase or mug break.

Numerous THC-CBD stands featured seltzers, drops, gummies, potions, elixirs, and salves. There was a bit of a snake oil vibe as sellers described all the ways CBC would improve one's life.

I bought a can of beer. Despite this being an event, the price was a respectfully low $5. A stand next door sold bottles of water for $4. It's nice knowing that the malt, hops, and yeast that came with my water added only a buck to the price.

From the land of sky blue waters. That was the line in the old commercials with the Hamm's Bear (he got a home run in that commercial below).

I think I saw every art display. After finishing my Hamm's and paella I retrieved my bike from the free valet. Those people provided a worthwhile service and deserved a tip. I didn't mind putting something in their jar.

One the way home I passed a small neighborhood brewery. Is a bike ride complete if don't stop at a brewery?

Isham led an extraordinary life traveling around the world with her diplomat husband, carefully absorbing and transforming the myriad cultures and traditions she encountered into her own distinct abstract style. Beyond the Brush explores Isham’s enduring interest in philosophy, nature, and spirituality through the lens of a specific technique and decade in the artist’s illustrious career: her spray gun works from 1968 through 1978. Although Isham’s work is held in some of the country’s most esteemed museum collections – including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum; Washington, D.C.; and Minneapolis Institute of Art; to name just a few – it has not been the focus of a major solo exhibition in the United States for over a decade. Spanning both floors of Hollis Taggart’s recently expanded flagship at 521 West 26th Street, Beyond the Brush intends to reintroduce audiences to Isham’s ethereal works and celebrate her remarkable ability to translate the metaphysical into the visual.

Born in New York City in 1927, Sheila Isham married Hayward Isham, a U.S. Foreign Service officer, after she graduated from Byrn Mawr College. Her husband’s career caused the couple to frequently relocate internationally, while Isham’s inquisitiveness led her to fully immerse herself in each culture, diligently studying local beliefs and traditions. In Germany, she became the first American to be accepted at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied from 1950 to 1954 under German Expressionists. In 1955, Isham accompanied her husband to Moscow, where she immersed herself in Russian avant-garde art, and in 1962, to Hong Kong, where she began a rigorous study of classical Chinese calligraphy as well as Eastern philosophies. During her time in Hong Kong, Isham was especially influenced by her studies with the master Feng Kanghou, who oversaw her calligraphic efforts. After a brief return to the United States, the Ishams moved to Haiti in 1974, where the artist became especially preoccupied by the natural world and studying the effects of light.

While in Hong Kong and upon her return to the United States in the early 1970s, Isham became interested in merging Eastern and Western artistic traditions and philosophies. This spiritual inquiry led her into the atmospheric color abstractions that are the focus of Beyond the Brush. Aiming to achieve an impressionistic light effect and to imbue her abstraction with spirituality, Isham embraced the spray gun – an instrument that releases pigment under pressure – which she had been experimenting with since the mid-1960s. This technique, along with her delicate palette, allowed her to create cloud-like forms that capture the sensation of ethereality. As Patricia Lewy notes in her catalogue essay, “Isham followed an internal drive to affirm a higher consciousness through color and form,” leading her to develop of a singular, meditative visual language. Beyond specific cultural influences, it is Isham’s commitment to spirituality and interest in the sublime that provides the strongest thread between the works in Beyond the Brush.

“We are thrilled to devote both floors of the gallery to this incredibly rich decade of Sheila Isham’s career,” said Hollis Taggart. “Though Isham – now in the ninety-fifth year of her life – contributed greatly to the art of the twentieth century, her fascinating life and oeuvre has not been studied or exhibited extensively, especially in the past decade. With Beyond the Brush, we hope to not only begin to give Isham’s work the scholarship it deserves – starting with Patricia Lewy’s scholarly catalogue essay – but also to share the sheer beauty of her canvases with wider audiences.”
