this really is all rather special, and absolutely bursting with an infectious and unrelenting energy that crushes modern life into the ground through the supreme power of perfectly choreographed, smoke-inducing, tough-ass multi-banshee dance – and a genuinely well-meaning lyrical wry smile (complete with “gotcha!” laughter drop).

at its heart, french songstrel mai lan’s “technique” seems devilishly simple, revolving, as it does, around a singular, non-stop, muscular, elastic, swerving, diving, bucking, weaving 8-note groove, but you can rest assured that there’s far more to this than meets the eye – indeed, to come across as this simple, effective and so fiercely catchy takes immense craft, precision and, well, technique. the track was co-created by mai lan, max labarthe and godmode founder, nick sylvester, and you can certainly sense the latter’s incisive and insistent production craft driving the whole thing along.

ultimately, what makes the track is the sheer obsessive attention to detail on that addictive and evolving core, both lyrically and instrumentally. while resolute and tenacious in its essence, it’s hypnotically iterative and ever-expanding, taking on new cues and subtly accessorizing with style and impressive panache at every turn. whether it’s the added squelch-stretch-eq on the main groove, the metronomic muscle-man cowbell clobber, the down-low octave bass, the reversed / unison down-pitched male / major third harmonised vocal layers, or each extra element of chuggingly percussion, the catwalk stride never misses a beat, and each runway return brings with it a fresh look, a new surprise, and adds another ‘must-have’ piece to the collection. this is matched by mai lan’s own incremental vox gymnastics, as she alludes to in her take on the writing process: “the track never stops building up, getting more and more technical. everything gets technical, even losing control is under control.” her crisp emphasis and elocution, kinetic and arresting word choices, smart syncopation and repetition adds further jet propulsion and precision engineering. the whole thing is a finely tuned engine, designed to deliver maximum thrust.

no surprise then that panamæra’s visual and aerodynamic styling is similarly painstaking and precise. they really have done a truly spectacular job of capturing mai lan’s irrepressible character and channeling it through a stunning array of custom-built movements, gestures, accessories, symbols and effects to create an equally exciting accompaniment. It’s technically accomplished, sharp as a razor, edgy and energetic, restless and inspiring, and completely on point from start to finish. there are far too many highlights to mention (although the alien-mai-lan-communicator, “where’s the drop?” look-out, and “in this tummy” hand inflections are all particularly sublime), but it is the visceral and turbulent shooting of such tempestuous and vigorous dance (in conjunction with choreographer aziz) that really sets it apart: hair flies, limbs flex, pleats pivot, smoke rises, and the very ground on which they stand, march and stomp is shaken completely to the core.

this has to be one of the best tunes this year. and such great fun besides. so get amongst it, get energized, and never forget to “moisturize. take breaks.”
