"Alright sweetie, let me talk to grandma and you go get ready for bed. Teeth, PJs, and I'll be up in a couple of minutes for a bedtime story, okay?"

Rosie nodded, and whispered a quiet "goodnight, gammie" into the phone before handing it off to Auggie with both hands. He watched her toddle up the stairs, giving her a small smile and a wave, and only put the phone up to his ear when he was sure she was out of earshot.

"Elaine," he greeted tiredly.

"August, you need to be rational about this—"

"No. No. I'm not having this conversation again." His voice still hushed, he headed for the kitchen, the room furthest away from Rosie's upstairs. "I'm already getting enough texts I don't need from him. These are our terms, Elaine. He agreed. One weekend with Rose a month. We are not going to rehash this. It's been almost two years and he's never thought to bring this up until now?"

It was ridiculous, actually, that his ex-husband had exhausted all of his options and put his mother on the case in his stead. Auggie imagined six-foot-something, broad shouldered Jude Lawrence cowering behind his mommy and would've laughed if it weren't for the pressure that was setting in between his temples.

"One weekend isn't enough, and you know it. He's her father too, and he's missing all of these moments—"

"No," he insisted again, his voice getting louder and angrier then. "He did this to himself, and you know it. He wasn't thinking about either of us when he did what he did — not for three years. I'm not going to waste my time thinking about him now."

"August, that's not fair."

A laugh left him like a boom, but he really only registered it through the vibration in his chest; his hearing was getting fuzzier the longer this conversation wore on. "We're not even going to go there. Fair? Really?"

Auggie had become a world-class compartmentalizer in the time since his divorce. The entire sequence of events that led to papers being served — finding the second phone, the spare set of keys to that LA apartment, the numb drive to Los Feliz, the wait there until he heard Jude's key turn in the lock — it had all been packaged and shipped off to the deepest confines of his mind, only to be opened like Pandora's box now, all of it screaming bloody murder behind his eyes.

"I won't hear anymore. If I had it my way, he would never see her, and I wouldn't have to come up with a new way to tell my daughter that her father is a lying bastard every month."

If his former mother-in-law was saying anything, Auggie didn't hear it. "He's not getting more time. If he wants more, he can take me back to court, but if he actually gives a fuck about her, he'll stay away and take what he's already been given. I swear to you, if we end up back in court, he will never see her again."

With a passing 'goodnight,' because August Villanueva was nothing if not well-raised, he hung up and tossed his phone onto the counter. Onto that bedtime story.

First impression(s)

As a sort of Christmas treat, I decided to post Christine's first impression of Meissa from the revised version of "Pandora's Key".

It was fascinating, how different magic was now compared to three hundred years ago. Christine admired the witches that had managed to create their current educational system. Logic and creativity were the foundation for the current way of teaching and even like this, magic could feel like an impossible task. She could not imagine living in a time where your value as a witch was determined by how many spells one could memorize.

She was so transfixed by the lecture she did not even hear the classroom door opening. She only noticed the new arrival when Signor Villanueva abruptly stopped talking. Silence fell over the room, except the sound of what could only be the footsteps of someone in high heels. Christine noticed that her fellow students’ quiet was mostly due to boredom as none of them looked surprised or interested in what was happening. Even the teacher seemed used to it, only annoyance could be read on his face.

An unknown figure entered the periphery of Christine’s visual field. The girl had to blink twice before her brain could process the vision in black and red that was in front of her. A taller than average girl that could only be another student was face to face with the teacher. She had a small pink notebook and a couple of pencils in her hand. The pink was stood out in contrast with her...everything else. She was indeed wearing high heeled boots that covered the inferior part of her legs, going even above the knee where they were met by a scarlet dress. A black leather jacket and dark make-up completed the punk/goth look. Even the girls hair matched her outfit: a shiny black that could only come from a bottle, with a red streak on the left.

“Signorina Fabbri, how kind of you to honour us with your presence. After half of my lecture is already over. Anything you want to say?”

The girl simply shrugged. She did not look in the least concerned that she was scolded in front of the entire class. She had an air of arrogance around her that Christine had seen in only the most powerful and privileged.

“I could say I am sorry, but we both know I would be lying. May I sit down now or would you like me to leave?”

Signor Villanueva did not even bother with a verbal answer, he simply pointed at the empty desk across Christine.

The Fabbri girl sat down and opened her notebook. Christine thought she might be taking notes, but to her surprise the girl was just doodling in it, ignoring the outside world completely.

Christine felt a sudden anger rise in the pit of her stomach. Who did she think she was? Coming in late and being disrespectful was one thing, but not even paying attention to what was taught was simply...unforgivable. There were plenty of witches who would kill to be at this school and this girl was here and had opportunities beyond imagination, yet she behaved like a spoiled brat. Probably one of those legacy kids Nina had mentioned, who believed they were above everyone else.

Maybe feeling the burnt of Christine's stare, the brunette rose her gaze from her notebook and looked straight into Christine’s eyes. Despite being caught staring, Christine refused to look away, somehow mesmerized by the other’s lazy, yet intense gaze. For a brief moment, both girls were engaged in a battle of wills, before the brunette resumed her doodling with a smile on her lips.

This silent encounter marked Christine for a reason even she could not understand. For the rest of the day, she could not help but feel those predatory eyes on her, despite never crossing paths with the other girl again.
