They dropped the key points in the first place because senior skaters gave them the feedback that it restricted their ‘creativity and freedom’. Junior coaches wanted them kept for development purposes. No shit senior skaters who want medals and prize money don’t like their turns and timing being scrutinized! The technical panel didn’t have to give in to them!
(Also, any artist, writer, musician or dancer will say that strict parameters can aid creativity because it forces you to think outside the narrow box. A theme as wide as 80s and seventeen teams go with Scorpions. ‘Movies’ would inevitably see every team pick from a very narrow range of Anglosphere blockbusters because nobody will dare to do something they’re not 100% sure an audience will instantly understand if the team before them gets a standing ovation to Titanic. ‘Waltz’ ‘Polka’, ‘Samba’, ‘Quickstep’ etc completely removes this negative incentive.)
they can’t have it both ways - they can’t say they’re encouraging creativity and at the same time skew the theme towards the lowest common denominator. you can’t manufacture moments and think they’ll move or grab anyone. anytime skating goes viral it’s because a skater is being authentic or did something outside the box or caught some lightning in the collective moment

Our stars got funky to the hits of Motown in this week's episode of Dancing With the Stars!
Former Giant and current Good Morning America cohost Michael Strahan joined the judging panel as the remaining stars danced to some of Motown's greatest hits. Though it wasn't explicitly stated, it does seem each couple did have to incorporate some sort of move associated with Motown into their routine.
So who ended up dancing in the streets and who fell flat? Let's see how the stars did!
Tyson and Jenna: Poor Tyson. But he was one of the weakest dancers this week. I noticed a few missteps in his foxtrot to "Master Blaster (Jammin')" with Jenna. I think he also fell off the beat at one point and didn't really get back on it. He also seemed to stumble when he and Jenna were preparing for her spin and I worried they would lose a point from the Lift Police. But though Carrie Ann did not that there was a lift, she said she was not docking anyone for lifts this week. It didn't save Tyson and so we must say goodbye to him until the finals.
Ariana and Pasha: Ariana continues to soar. Her quickstep to "You Can't Hurry Love" was pretty amazing. I felt it was a bit rushed in the beginning but once she found her groove, she shone on the dance floor. Pasha is doing great with her and I think they can really win this all if they keep this up.
Jason and Daniella: Jason continues to nail his routines even though he still seems to be his toughest critic. He got to do a jive to "Do You Love Me" and it was the perfect song for this dance style. His face was much better this week - or maybe it just better matched the energy of the song. With how well he and Ariana are doing, Daniella may be facing her husband in the finals.
Charity and Artem: Artem has recovered from COVID and has been reunited with Charity! Her father came to visit her in rehearsals as he's a big Motown fan and watched as she learned the foxtrot. She and Artem danced to "My Girl" and again, I felt it was technically proficient but she still hasn't found the emotional heart of dance yet. And if she wants to compete against Jason and Ariana as well as Xochitl, she is going to need to find to add some extra oomph to her routines.
Xochitl and Val: Xochitl closed out the night's competition with a foxtrot to "My Guy." It was her first slower routine with an elegant dance that required her to be more in hold. And she proved she could channel her energy and focus on such a routine. Val continues to do amazing work with her while keeping her age in mind like he did with Zendaya. Xochitl has the emotional connection to the music and can play a character while dancing, proving she could easily end up on the top of the leaderboard.
Lele and Brandon: Lele danced a cha-cha to "Super Freak" though she and Brandon did do a little nod to MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" with their dance moves. I enjoy watching Lele and I think she's a really great, positive person. I just can't figure out why she's now fallen into the middle of the pack and what she needs to propel out of it. Maybe I will put my finger on it soon but for now, I'm just going to enjoy watching her and Brandon dance.
Mira and Gleb: Mira had a rumba to "Let's Get it On," arguably one of the sexiest songs possible and perfect for a rumba. And she continues to look beautiful and handle the dances well but I think she's still letting her nerves get the better of her. She had hoped to lose herself in a character for this dance but she didn't really let herself. I could tell when she was thinking and it made the dance lose something. She needs to trust herself and Gleb if she wants to breakaway from the middle.
Barry and Peta: Barry shook off his low scores last week and returned with a pretty good tango to "Get Ready". There was more dancing for me this week and he didn't just seem to be hitting poses. He recalled meeting the Jackson 5 while on the Brady Bunch and experiencing the height of Motown so I think he let that experience inspire him to really succeed with his tango. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next week!
Alyson and Sasha: I forgot which judge said it but I do agree that may Alyson and Sasha spent too long in the canoe before getting into their foxtrot to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Because when they did dance, they looked very good. Alyson continues to improve though I think she lost her footing once or twice. Her daughters were very sweet when they came to watch her at rehearsals and asking the judges to give their mom 10s. I am a bit surprised that the show had a "bottom three" and Alyson ended up there but she made it through so I look forward to seeing her perform in the next show.
Harry and Rylee: I think it was Harry's best dance so far this season though I don't think it was better than Mauricio's. There's still something awkward about him that Rylee hasn't managed to help him overcome yet. I think right now they are more focused on the technical aspects they have worked on the emotional. His face during the foxtrot was just all concentration and didn't match the song "Easy." So hopefully they can make him less awkward and start working on emotional connections soon.
Mauricio and Emma: Mauricio shook off last week's disaster and recovered for his foxtrot to "Working My Way Back to You" this week. It looked very graceful and I felt he was a bit more connected to the music than Harry. While he still needs to work on a few things, I think he could continue in this competition for a few more weeks still. Let's see what he can do.
Adrian and Britt: Adrian is still trying his best but I'm not sure if his best will help him win the competition. Unlike with other couples, I feel I was watching Britt more than him during their quickstep to "I Want You Back." He just kinda faded away. But I do appreciate Strahan's kind words to him while acknowledging their old rivalry. It was very sweet.
I found it interesting that Alfonso did mention the judges' save during the show. He said it was not in play "yet" which makes me wonder if they are planning on bringing it back more towards the end to again prevent a Bobby Bones situation. I don't really think we'll have one, especially since Harry did end up in the bottom three this time. So I guess we'll have to see.
Week 4 will celebrate Disney's 100th anniversary - so it's pretty much Disney week. Our remaining couples will dance to songs from the past ten decades of Disney magic and I'm sure there will be some Disney magic in the ballroom. Maybe even a sneak peek at its upcoming movie Wish.
See you then!

It was Michael Buble week on Dancing With the Stars! He opened the show with a performance of "Sway" and then also sang "Higher" while Derek, his fiancée Hayley and the pros danced to the song about halfway through the show. He also joined the judging panel, so all the scores were out of 50 this week.
(I lost points on my DWTS fantasy game as I predicted a couple would dance to "Just Haven't Met You Yet." No one danced to it. What gives, show?)
Anyway, did Michael Buble bring our contestants luck or not? Let's find out!
Jessie and Alan: Apparently Jessie's fans have been telling her she's been dancing the salsa on TikTok for years so she hoped she would easily pick up the song. She still struggled but I thought her salsa to "Come Dance With Me" was one of her best. The judges kinda agreed but unfortunately the voters didn't. Jessie at least saw a silver lining in her elimination - she could take her children trick or treating on Halloween. And I think she can hold her head high. She was the Prom Queen and went out on a good routine.
Charli and Mark: Charli was back on top with her foxtrot to "Fever." Though she struggled to be sensual in rehearsals, she delivered where it mattered and steamed up the dance floor with Mark. She looked like a professional dancer, which could work against her with some fans but I think they won't affect her too much.
Gabby and Val: Val called in some help this week. Jenna came to rehearsals to help Gabby get in touch with her sensual side and to give permission for Gabby to be sexy with Val. It was nice seeing Jenna again and her baby bump! Jenna's lessons seemed to work as Gabby was a bit more relaxed while dancing the rumba to "Home" with Val. But I still want to see a little more heart in her routines. They still feel more technical than emotional.
Heidi and Artem: Heidi's samba to "It Had Better Be Tonight (Meglio stasera)" was good, though it didn't surpass Wayne's from last time. But she certainly bounced back from being in the bottom two to once again be competition for her daughter. She just needs to hold onto this momentum and hopefully not end up in the bottom two again.
Shangela and Gleb: Shangela continues to make her mark on the ballroom while pulling away from the pack. Her tango to "Hollywood" exuded old Hollywood elegance and style. She is putting in the work to get better and rightfully declared herself the dark horse. And she did that tango with fried chicken tucked into her dress! Impressive.
Wayne and Witney: Wayne fell from the top of the leaderboard! He was sick during the week - but it was not COVID. Based on what he said, it sounds like exhaustion led him vulnerable to a classic stomach bug. So he and Witney lost valuable rehearsal time. But the fact that even without as much rehearsal time Wayne still ended up in the middle of the leaderboard shows how talented and dedicated he is. His quickstep to "I Get a Kick Out of You" wasn't his best but it was just a blip on his DWTS journey. And fan Michael Buble still gave him a 10 so there's that.
Jordin and Brandon: Jordin and Brandon continue to be a steady couple and their foxtrot to "You Make Me Feel So Young." The story of how Jordin would dance with her grandfather to this song in her kitchen was so sweet and it was clear that emotion propelled her dance. The judges are right that she has some technical things to work on but she could break away from the pack once she improves those.
Daniel and Britt: Daniel bounced back after a not-so-great week with a nice foxtrot to "Feeling Good." Britt decided to share the lyrics with him so he understood the song better and that seemed to help him connect with it. It definitely moved Carrie Ann and she couldn't stop praising him.
Trevor and Emma: Trevor looked absolutely dashing as he danced the foxtrot to "Come Fly With Me." And thankfully he survived a second trip to the bottom two though I don't think he deserved to be there. He keeps getting better and could win it all as the male dark horse. So thank you to the judges for saving him. Again.
Vinny and Koko: Look, I get why Vinny gets votes. He's likeable and he is fun to watch. But I'm starting to reach my point where I don't know if his fun and genuine packages/interviews can outweigh the fact that more talented dancers are landing in the bottom two over him and Koko. His cha-cha to "Save the Last Dance" was good but still worlds away from the other competitors - and not in a good way. As we get closer to the end, I am starting to worry that we may have another Bobby Bones situation on our hand and I'm not sure we can handle another one of those.
So that was Michael Buble night! Next time, it's everyone's second favorite episode after Disney Night - Halloween!
See you then!

It was a celebration of everything Taylor Swift in the ballroom as the stars danced to her songs in hopes of making it into the semifinals. Our show opened with a performance of "Love Story" featuring most of our pros. Several later did a routine to a slowed down version of "Style" to promote the Dancing With the Stars tour. I did not see Peta during the show so I hope she's doing alright. Barry, though, was there to cheer everyone on.
Mandy Moore (no, that that one), who has choreographed for the show before and choreographer Taylor's Eras tour, joined the panel as a guest judge. Alfonso also confirmed that bandleader Ray Chew is a Swiftie and has also worked with her before. And all the disco balls were turned to hearts for the evening's celebration. Taylor even sent another video wishing everyone the best before the competition began.
Who made sparks fly and who had their castles crumble? Let's take a look!
Harry and Rylee: I think this was the right outcome. While Harry has made some improvement, I don't think he was ready for the semifinals. However, I think he should be applauded for all the hard work he did to get to the quarterfinals. I'm glad Rylee put a lot more content in their rumba to "August" after Billy Porter's comment about Harry being a tree for Rylee to dance around after the dance off in the last show. He handled it well and maybe if the show had a few more weeks, he might've been almost as good as some of the others but it was just too little too late.
Jason and Daniella: Jason took stock of his position in the competition and decided to fight his way back to the top of the leaderboard. And he succeeded. His Argentine tango with Daniella to "Don't Blame Me" was fierce and sexy. It also included a lot of leg work that he executed impeccably. I also loved his little wink to the camera toward the end. Definitely one of the best routines of the season. I still think he's a lock for the finale, especially as he's now the only man left in the competition.
Xochitl and Val: Xochitl and Val danced a quickstep to "Paper Rings" and it was upbeat and as energetic as she is. We also got to meet her mother during their package, which was a nice treat. She's clearly Xochitl's number one fan. I also think Xochitl is a lock for the finals but she does have to be careful. Some of her kicks didn't look as clean as they could've been so she just has to watch out for her technique.
Charity and Artem: Charity hopes that winning the cha-cha dance off last week will help give her the spirit and energy to beat the others. She and Artem dance an Argentine tango to "Look What You Made Me Do." But I don't think she really absorbed Carrie Ann's comments from last week. She had flawless technique but there still didn't feel like there was much emotion behind them. I don't know if she's a lock for the finals. This was her third appearance in the bottom 3 in a row and I don't know if she could survive a fourth time.
Ariana and Pasha: Ariana feels the pressure now that Carrie Ann said she could win it all. And she delivered with her beautiful rumba to a slowed-down version of "Cruel Summer." She and Pasha continue to have great chemistry and she keeps mastering each move while putting emotion and intention behind it. I think she is a lock for the finals and still believe it could be a battle of husband and wife for the mirrorball - will Pasha or Daniella take it with their respective partner?
Alyson and Sasha: When this competition started, I thought Alyson would only make it a few weeks. I didn't peg her as the dark horse but she has proven herself to be. She has certainly come a long way since her first dance. I do agree with the judges that Sasha needs to let her dance more. It took them 30 seconds of a 90 second routine to finally get into the proper cha-cha. That needs to change. He needs to let her dance from the beginning and show off her moves and maybe they might make the finals. I think it will come down to a choice between her and Charity and either one could go home at this point.
After the individual dances, we had a dance relay. Our couples were paired up and each pairing was assigned a different dance style. One couple was selected to dance first and then the second couple danced. One judge was assigned per couple and they voted on who would get 3 extra points. So let's see how that went!
Ariana and Pasha vs. Xochitl and Val
Our first relay was between two of our best couples. Ariana and Pasha kicked things off and then Xochitl and Val took over. Both danced beautiful Viennese waltzes to "Lover" and it's amazing how different they felt. Ariana and Pasha's had a more classic and old-school feel, like I was watching a routine from a classic movie or Broadway show, while Xochitl and Val's felt more modern, like something you would see today. Carrie Ann had to make the decision and ultimately awarded the point to Xochitl and Val. It was a tough decision and I think either couple could've won.
Harry and Rylee vs. Alyson and Sasha
The second relay featured a jive to "Shakes It Off". The two couples at the bottom of the leaderboard competed in this one with Harry and Rylee going first and then Alyson and Sasha performing. Neither couple have danced a jive before so this was new for both. They seemed to do well enough but I do think Alyson was a bit better than Harry - her legs were more on point during her kicks than his. But both had plenty of content and showed off their dance abilities. However, I do think Bruno made the right decision to award the extra points to Alyson and Sasha.
Jason and Daniella vs. Charity and Artem
Our last relay featured our two "middle" couples, for lack of a better word. Jason and Daniella and Charity and Artem danced a cha-cha to "Lavender Haze", marking the second time in a row that Charity had to dance a cha-cha for extra points. She won last time and hoped history would repeat, even wearing the same style of pants as last time. But Jason brought a little more energy along with technique to his cha-cha, just inching out her excellent routine with Artem, and so Derek awarded Jason and Daniella the extra points.
So that was Taylor Swift week! Next time, we have the semifinals. Now, I have my sister's wedding this coming Saturday. I may not be able to post on time next week like I would usually. So my semifinals post may have to be combined with my finals post. I'll have to see but I wanted to give you a head's up.
I'll see you next time!

I remember going home when I was in middle school, grabbing a snack and then settling down to watch TRL to see what the top videos were for that day. I was a big Backstreet Boy fan so I always cheered for them to be on the list and hoped they were number one. But I loved watching the music videos and I also loved Pop-Up video, where they would put facts either about the song, the video or just some fun trivia (like popping up a fact about how most people in Africa are Muslim so they don't celebrate Christmas during the video for "Do They Know It's Christmas?").
So I was pretty excited for this theme night.
Paula Abdul joined the panel to judge the remaining stars as they danced routines inspired by some iconic music videos. They were tasked to incorporate the dance moves from the videos while remaining true to the dance style assigned to them. And then in the second round, we had the team dances.
Who is still standing after Music Video Night and who had to say Bye, Bye, Bye? Find out!
Lele and Brandon: Lele had a great night and Brandon was right that she didn't deserve to go home. It looks like the judges agreed - I caught Derek mouthing "Wow" after her elimination and then he and a concerned-looking Bruno had a pow-wow. She was assigned to dance to Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever" and rose to the challenge, letting her hips do the talking. Yes, she her lifts were a little clunky but everything else was amazing. She should've made it further but I'm glad she made as far as she did. We'll miss you, Lele.
Ariana and Pasha: This is likely to become another iconic routine. Ariana really channeled Britney for her cha-cha to "I'm a Slave 4 U" and I think incorporated the classic moves best into her cha-cha. She really did nail the middle where she led the pros in the routine from the video. Everyone was absolutely on point and Ariana looked like a pro herself. No wonder she topped the leaderboard and earned immunity from the dance off next time!
Xochitl and Val: Xochitl talked about directing a music video for a friend and how it was a great experience. She and Val then did a jazz routine to Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" and she handled it well until she had a little malfunction with her costume. She struggled to put on the replica of Stefani's band coat and her hat fell off. But she seemed to recover nicely to finish the routine, though the stumble did cost her some points with the judges.
Charity and Artem: I was a bit surprised Charity ended up in the bottom three but I think it might be the jolt she needs. The judges gave her some good critiques for her jazz routine to Janet Jackson's "All for You" but I don't know if she can achieve the one thing she needs to really elevate her performances - have an emotional connection rather than just focusing on being technically perfect. All the female pros spent time with her and had a brunch with her but I don't know if it's something you can teach. Paula talked about how Janet Jackson tapped into her inner power and channeled that, which is what Charity needs to do. I just don't know if she can.
Jason and Daniella: I don't know why Derek thought Jason's routine was more of a Week 1 or 2 dance. I thought it was great. One of the judges noted it was a proper jazz routine and I thought it felt like something that would be performed on Broadway. Jason and Daniella really captured the feel of "Take On Me" and still made it feel fresh and new. I think they should've been higher.
Alyson and Sasha: I think Charity needs to learn from Alyson. While Alyson isn't the most technical dancer, there is something about her ability to connect with the music that elevates them. I could tell she was having fun with her quickstep to Christina Aguilera's "Candyman" and she let that give her energy to tackle the dance. And it shone through in her performance, drawing people in. That's what Charity needs to tap into and channel to elevate her performances.
Barry and Peta: Barry's reaction to seeing Bruno in the video for Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" was priceless. I loved it. He also had a lot of fun with his quickstep, much like Peta. There were times where it didn't feel very "quick" but I'm not sure if that was due to the music or Barry. Because when he did step it up, he handled it well and made the routine shine. Either way, it was pretty fun to watch - especially when he got to shower Bruno with some glitter.
Harry and Rylee: Harry and Rylee were assigned to dance a jazz routine to NSYNC's "It's Gonna Be Me" so Lance Bass stopped by to give Harry some tips and to help with the choreography. During the routine, Harry was strongest when dancing the video choreography with Gleb and Alan but didn't carry that confidence over when he was dancing with Rylee. There's more to say about Harry but I'll wait for the team dances.
Now it's time for the team dances! Harry and Alyson were appointed the team captains. Harry chose Lele, Xochitl and Charity for his team and they were assigned Gangnam Style as their song. So they chose to name themselves Team Young 'N Style since everyone on the team were younger members of the competition. Meanwhile, Alyson's team included Jason, Ariana and Barry and they were assigned "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" for their song. So they decided to call themselves Team 4 Everybody.
Team Young 'N Style: This was a fun routine to watch. Everyone was in sync and rose to the challenge. I believe Lele and Brandon had the strongest solo portion and it just highlighted how much of a shame it was that they were eliminated. Derek noted afterwards that Harry is better in a group than solo and I have to agree. He was strongest when everyone danced together but was weak in his solo portion. Unfortunately, I don't think he and Rylee can just dance in a group until the end of the competition so he needs to figure out how to bring that to his solo routines.
Team 4 Everybody: It was another fun routine though maybe not as tight as Team Young 'N Style's. Jason, Alyson and Ariana had strong solo sections while Barry's was the weakest. But they clearly had a lot of fun together and I think Alyson really stepped up as the team captain. I also loved the end where they all switched partners and danced in same sex couples. And I loved how much of a Backstreet fan Ariana is that she nearly collapsed in tears when AJ McLean walked into the room to give them some pointers in rehearsal. Same, Ariana, same.
And Music Video Night is in the books. I wonder after a string of unexpected eliminations - Mira, Mauricio and now Lele - if the producers are considering bringing back the judges' save. Or maybe we'll go the entire season without it. Right now, I feel I could only understand Alyson possibly winning it all as she has been the most improved dancer in my opinion. But I guess we'll see what happens next time.
Speaking of next time, Billy Porter will be the guest judge as the remaining couples dance to the music of the one and only Whitney Huston. Can't wait to share my thoughts on those performances as well as the dance off!
See you then!
