You scoffed, not willing to accept his apology, and turned to look over his shoulder.

He took a step closer, setting Scorpius on the ground beside him. His eyes pleaded for forgiveness as he reached out to gently touch your arm.

I visited a dentist today here in Baguio city, since this is where I am staying for months now. Her clinic is near the cathedral. It lies within the 3rd floor of a building. I was greeted and welcomed by the dentist’s assistant and was asked to put my things on a basket as I entered the clinic. 

It is not as spacious as the clinic I used to visit whenever I’m in the province, but the ambiance is a 100% for me. Dr. Jell welcomed me, introduced herself, and asked me to seat. I gave her the copy of my panoramic teeth radiograph and she did her assessment afterwards. 

The dental chair is faced on a window, so the view is all trees and some houses. It was open, so I felt Baguio’s signature cold breeze. She then pressed something to recline the chair, so she can take a further look. My view shifted from all trees to a huge television. Yep, It was positioned there for a purpose. As someone who is always anxious inside dental clinics, I greatly appreciate it. It is something to keep the patient occupied during procedures. 

After that, we had another discussion about my 3 impacted teeth. Among the three, I can only feel pain from one which was on the lower right portion. I was also diagnosed with TMJD or Temporomandibular Mandibular Joint Disorder after asking me a series of questions and feeling the area near my temples as I close and open my jaw. It is also evident in the x-ray. I asked some questions and we did more discussions. 

After everything got clear to me, I settled the consultation fee. We also had a  chitchat outside the consultation room. She’s a good dentist and I find her professional. 

After leaving the building, I walked down and saw a cafe nearby. I wanted to try it, so I gave it a go. It was my first time there and I wanted to taste their best selling frappe, I was offered a Vietnamese style frappe, they call it “Caphe Bak Xiu”. I also ordered a pancake board, everything was completely served after around 30 minutes. Coffee and food was good! Did a little contemplation inside the cafe too. There were like only 3 of us there. The only thing that I did not like about the cafe was the cashier, my total bill was around three hundred pesos and I handed her a thousand note, but she gave me a smirk and asked for a smaller bill instead. I do not have a smaller bill during that time, Why would she smirk? lol It’s like I’ll be the one to adjust.

Sometimes, we get bad runs too.

I blacked out at 3KM. I already felt different on the first kilometer but I figured, maybe like other past runs, I’ll feel better. But at 3KM, I stopped— heart racing, seeing black and white and everything fades. I was getting scared because I can't hear anything anymore.

I have also ben extremely anxious about my dental surgery (which was moved to next week). Due to this, I also barely ate yesterday... except for a very late lunch at 5PM.

What’s in a radiograph? The effort it took to get this Panoramic was quite massive and a definite concerted effort of the team Med Hx of Pt - I can’t recall the exact details. - basically stroke abt 18 months ago - almost complete paralysis, on PEG feeding and bed bound when Pt was being seen at our centre frm the start: 1 yr ago - locked in syndrome: can understand what’s happening around him Dental Hx - limited examination could be done when he first came in 1 year ago by my colleague - because he was seen on a trolley bed - he was completely clenching most of the time - sent off for a 6 month to 1 year review due to the limitations of what could be done for him: no signs of infection at the time, just cleaning/swabbing for whatever accessible surfaces at the time + OHI for the caregiver Hx of complaint : - when I saw him one month ago, the family c/o Pt having and incident of facial swelling of the lower left submandivular area: according to the family - given antibiotics by his son who is a medical doctor by the time I saw the pt, the swelling had gone down I still saw him in the trolley bed and I could do another limited examination Findings: - heavily restored dentition, I couldn’t really see posterior beyond the #34i, #35i (didn’t even know they were implants at the time ). - Noted that #33 was mobile but we weren’t convinced if that was the cause of the swelling because there wasn’t any abscess/sinus tracts/swellings intra-orally. Unsure if it was the #34,#35 as well because they were firm but couldn’t really assess their integrity or condition. - With help of my department head, we could sort of pride his mouth opening, not enough to put a mouth prop in but enough to realise there was #37 there - I wasn’t convinced that that was a source of infection because it felt firm and I couldn’t feel any swellings or see any signs of infection (although it was really hard to see!) Further investigations : We tried to attempt intra oral radiographs. The radiographer has a hard time trying all sorts of films etc but most of the time we couldn’t even place the film in or the Pt would clench back up in protest and groan angrily So my consultant says to put on a one month review and see if swelling returns. As I spoke to his wife and caregiver, it turns out that patient has been making some improvements in his rehab. Has been doing speech therapy once a week to improve muscle control and attempt some verbalisation it sounds Been placing him on a wheelchair for 1-2hrs per day and they use a hoist on him for transfers at home. So my plan: N/v bring Pt in a wheelchair, see if that wheelchair can allow Pt to be seated to take an OPG which maybe more diagnostic than our previous feeble attempts at intra-oral radiographs Second visit w me: One month later (which was 2 weeks ago), we saw Pt again. He was in his reclinable wheelchair, and seemed to be in a more relaxed mood, didn’t seem to clench as much. Unfortunately the mechanics and design of the wheelchair didn’t allow him to be positioned him properly. The radiographer want him to sit in a specific chair that would be better. So 3 of us decided to use our available hoist to transfer Pt frm his wheelchair to the regular chair. Even this transfer was quite challenging because our x-ray room was really small. We had to do the hoist transfer outside the room and push him on the chair into the X-ray room. And someone has to support his neck while we pushed him on the regular chair. His caregiver wore a lead apron while supporting and positioning his neck when taking the X-ray itself. And I think the resulting radiograph was worth the effort. We have a clearer picture of his current dentition. I doubt that the source of infection was from the 35i 34i or 37. 33 was the one with mob2+ and u can discern some PARL. Wife agreed for exo the #33. Pt understood what was happening as I explained to him slowly and he rolled his eyes, the Wife says that means he agrees to it. Anyway 33 just popped out of the socket after I gave LA infiltration and when patient clenched down. I didn’t even have to use my forceps. It was a scary near miss as it rested on the pt’s tongue as I retrieved it quickly w my tweezers. So pressure gauze was applied with digital pressure until bleeding was stopped and pt was fit to go. Okay so that eventful appt took a whole 90 min but it felt satisfying. It may sound something really simple on the surface and even the radiograph looks unremarkable but the whole process was just the opposite. I was initially at a loss of what to do and how manage the Pt when I first saw him, but I feel a little bit more confident now. Of course it was a collective effort of so many ppl. We are fortunate to have a hoist and a radiographer who knows what he’s doing. We are fortunate that the pt’s family invested so much in his care: having a hoist that makes him familiar with the procedure, gg for rehab and speech therapy to help w his control, posture, etc. So all in all... yeah this long ramble was because I felt this was quite an interesting case.

Many children are ambivalent about getting braces.  On one hand, they like the idea of perfect teeth, but on the other hand, they are nervous about whether the braces will cause pain and discomfort.  The good news is that the placement of orthodontic braces is not at all painful, and the end result will be a beautiful straight smile.

Something I Never Forget

Hi there! so sorry I failed to fulfill my last commitment for 30 days writing challenge. It’s super challenging especially when something urgent messed up your schedule. I know I’m not supposed to have any reason for this but yeah it happened. Before speaking about the title, I want to share a story about my experiment having a minor surgery two days ago. This is one of the reasons why I decided not to do anything including writing. 

I’d been suffering from toothache for several months. It began after I enjoyed two or three days tasty beef meal. I made steak and gyoza and my mother made some beef stews. Unfortunately the beef was so thick, couldn’t be chewed, and hard to swallow. I think it left a significant injury inside my wisdom tooth so I had to feel the pain for months. I gave up last week. I started to feel worry if I had to consume antibiotic and painkiller everyday and in the end my father advised me to go to the dentist.

There I was at the dentist, the dentist suggested me to have a panoramic x-ray for the whole teeth and bring it to the oral surgeon to make a consultation. She also gave me prescription to kill the pain for temporary. Day after, I went to Pramita to have an x-ray. It took only 30 minutes from registration until getting the photo (FYI, I spent Rp 245.000,- for this photo (in case you need this information)) then I brought it to RSKGM Unpad. But unfortunately, the specialist was only available until 12 pm and I got there around 11 pm so I had to fill the appointment form for the day after. On Tuesday, I met the oral surgeon. He showed me that both of my bottom wisdom teeth have an abnormal position. They grow horizontally and push the other teeth forward. It affects the nerves so that’s why It hurts. He suggested me to pull out these horizontal teeth.

We made an evening appointment then at that day for this minor surgery. It was held in his clinic which is near my home so I didn’t have to drive that far while experiencing an aftereffect pain. And guess what ?

My bottom left wisdom tooth was hard to take because it contains a very high calcium. I spent around two full anesthesia injections and I still felt the pain. Whatever it was, it had to be pulled out because it was already broken down to pieces so i had to bear the pain while the surgeon was trying to forcibly remove it. Trust me when you have good teeth, you’ll feel the pain when it has to be pulled out. Seriously I almost gave up but in the end I made it. 

That day I decided to take two teeth (upper left and bottom left) at the same time. Luckily for the upper left wisdom teeth, it wasn’t that hard because the position makes it easier to be removed. Why do I have to remove it then ? Because there’s a hole in the tooth and it turns out making a headache. And after two hours of struggle, finally it finished. For the bottom left wisdom tooth with this position I supposed to spend about Rp 1.350.000,- but because I spent so much anesthesia liquid and chose threads that don’t need to be unplugged, then I had to pay about Rp 2.000.000,- (for 1 tooth). For the upper left wisdom tooth, I spent only Rp 1.350.000,-. So you can sum it up by yourself for the total fee of this surgery. The surgeon then gave me antibiotic, anti inflammation, and painkiller prescription to recover from this brutal surgery and I spent Rp 90.000,- for it. 

Today is my second day after surgery and I’m still feeling an inflammation around my mouth. I feel my inside cheek is swollen and i still couldn’t eat properly. Still consume porridge and still afraid to bite a hard food like fried chicken which is my favorite. Soon I recover I promise I will treat you with KFC hey my lovely teeth. 

Sigh. Finally it’s over. Still one tooth left to remove but It can wait I guess :)

So speaking about something someone told me about myself but I never forget, it must be something that stays inside my consciousness. Whether it’s amazing or terrible. I bet only these two conditions which can make one thing inherent in our subconscious. Right ?

Tapi kalau diingat-ingat amazing sih karena satu kata yang keluar dari ucapan seseorang mengenai kita, terkadang bisa membuat kita memproses informasi tersebut keluar dari jalurnya (overthink mungkin istilahnya).

Aku inget banget waktu itu, teman SMA yang ketemu lagi di tempat kuliah pernah membicarakan mengenai aku ke yang lainnya dan bilang kalau aku itu minoritas waktu SMA sedangkan dia super exist. Ya nggak bisa dipungkiri sih aku memang lebih suka melakukan banyak hal sama circle aku dan aku waktu SMA memang minder. Tapi yang aku nggak suka di sini adalah diferensiasi kasta sosial. Awalnya aku cukup kagum sama sekolah ini. Swasta, isinya high class students, orang-orangnya ramah, dan siapapun itu pasti diajak kenalan dan diajak ngobrol. Paham sih memang nggak semua orang akan punya karakter yang seragam tapi ternyata panggilan ini sangat membekas while yang aku pahami bahwa siapapun kita, kita sama-sama satu spesies. Mungkin karena adanya perbedaan prinsip sosial di sini. Tapi nggak papa ini jadi bumbu kehidupan yang menarik.

Ada lagi waktu akan naik ke tingkat dua. Waktu itu lagi jamanya Ospek Jurusan. Aku nggak bawa peralatan ibadah waktu itu dan diminta untuk berdiri di depan teman-teman dan minta maaf. Bukan aku nggak mau minta maaf, tapi waktu itu aku punya kesulitan untuk public speaking. Aku merasa sangat anxiety karena semua mata orang-orang tertuju ke aku dan menunggu aku untuk mengucapkan kata-kata. Rasanya kayak lagi di dalam tekanan. Saking takutnya untuk bicara di depan umum, tiba-tiba detak jantung aku nggak teratur, nggak bisa menyuplai oksigen ke otak, sehingga membuat tangan dan kaki lemas dan kesemutan. Waktu itu aku jatuh sebelum mengucapkan satu kata pun. Aku akhirnya diantar ke rumah. Sebelumnya juga pernah sih waktu kemitraan. Waktu itu aku flu berat dan nggak mampu ngikuti pelajaran. Aku izin sama dosen fisika karena nggak enak badan. Aku pulang dan mencoba untuk istirahat. Besoknya aku kembali ke kampus dan dipanggil rektorat. Diancam di DO karena nggak izin sama mereka. Setelah itu mulailah tragedi yang sama terjadi. Berakhir di rumah sakit dan dokter bilang aku kena panic attack. Kembali ke Osjur, setelah kejadian itu hampir semua senior melabeli aku dengan nama ”Drama Queen”. Dikata-katain di plurk dan aku bisa baca. Nggak hanya senior, tapi semua angkatan 07 satu kampus tau kejadian ini. Sampai-sampai ada temennya pacar aku waktu itu sms dia dan bilang “Serius lu nyu jadian sama dia ? Dia kan Drama Queen”. Ini sih memorable. Tapi label ini hilang dengan sendirinya ternyata as time goes by. 

Pernah juga dikatain sesat. Sebenernya ini karena aku punya pemikiran yang nggak sejalan dengan yang lain mengenai suatu hal. Aku merasakan suatu pemahaman yang berbeda setelah aku memberanikan diri untuk keluar dari kotak identitas bawaan lahir ini. Awalnya aku merasa tersingkirkan, tapi karena aku percaya dengan apa yang aku alami jadi it’s not a big deal. Aku juga pernah di sana, berdiri di atas pijakan mereka jadi sangat mengerti apa yang mereka pikirkan. 

Ini sih yang bikin aku nangis, ketika orang terdekat berkata “Gimana kamu mau jadi designer kalau penampilan kamu aja kayak gini”. Kata-kata ini luar biasa sih. Breaking my heart to pieces. Bukan my heart aja tapi my dream juga. Dan untungnya ada orang terdekat lainnya yang bilang “Sebenernya dia mencoba meng-encourage kamu by discouraging”. Dan akhirnya aku mencoba untuk membalikan persepsi membuat kritik ini menjadi suatu hal positif yang membangun. 

Nggak cuma kata-kata yang nyelekit ada juga kata-kata yang membahagiakan yang nggak bisa dilupakan. Yaitu ketika my significant other bilang bahwa aku punya kebaikan hati, selalu pengen menolong orang lain, lebih memikirkan orang lain ketimbang diri sendiri (nggak papa aku yang rugi asal orang lain nggak). Dan kata-kata kaya gini yang sejatinya bisa meningkatkan self-esteem (rasa percaya diri). Awalnya aku sangat nggak percaya sama diri sendiri, sejauh mana kemampuanku, seperti apa karakterku. Selalu aku melihat keburukan di atas kebaikan yang terus mentrigger untuk bilang “I’m not good enough” “I can’t do it because I’m stupid”. Namun ternyata ada yang melihat di sisi lainnya dan ini sangat membantu aku untuk berkembang. Banyak banget nasehat positif yang aku selalu dapat dari dia dan aku merasa bersyukur. Di samping itu diri inipun juga harus terima bahwa kelebihan ataupun kekurangan pasti akan dimiliki oleh setiap individu, yang terpenting bagaimana kita memprosesnya menjadi sesuatu yang bisa mengembangkan diri kita ke arah yang lebih positif. 

Sebenernya banyak sih yang masih membekas tapi kalau diceritakan mungkin terlalu panjang jadi mungkin cukup segini. Pada intinya, apapun yang orang lain bilang tentang diri kita, jadikan itu masukan untuk melangkahkan kaki ke arah yang lebih baik. Tetap menjadi manfaat bagi banyak orang dan ketika kita melihat ke belakang, bersyukurlah karena mereka telah membantu kita berkembang melalui opini mereka.
