Marseille, day 2, part 1

I had a bike tour scheduled for the afternoon, which meant I had a backpack with me today, which meant I couldn't go to the only museum in the city that's open on Mondays (the Mucem, a museum of "civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean," which sounds like it might attract the wrong kind of people, if you know what I mean) (I mean white supremacists). So instead I stuck to parks. First up was Parc Longchamp, which has this massive fountain/monument at its southwest corner. The buildings on the left and right are museums, both of which were closed for Monday.

The Parc Longchamp is also home to the "Funny Zoo," which used to be a regular zoo back when animal welfare wasn't a thing, and now they just have a bunch of sun-bleached, unmaintained fiberglass sculptures of animals in cages that are still upsettingly small, even though the animals are made of fiberglass and thus do not need the room.

The lack of maintenance also led to some horrifying tableaus, such as this one. Poor baby.

(Also, why is the log fiberglass? They couldn't find an actual log? They were concerned an actual log couldn't hold the weight of the inanimate bears in case they tried to walk across it?)

The Funny Zoo was worth the wander, though, because I managed to catch this amazing moment with a stray cat:

From there I began my trip to Parc Borely. I took the metro to the Vieux Port, where I waited for a bus under this giant reflective glass sunshade. It's like The Bean, if The Bean were less visually interesting but served a needed utilitarian function.

The bus I was waiting for takes a path around the Vieux Port and then the coast, and the traffic along that path is horrendous. I haven't seen the likes of it since Wildwood, NJ on Memorial Day Weekend. I could literally see the bus and the tracker said it was still 5 minutes away. Since the bus was leaving from a tourist hub and was headed to all the beaches, it was also absolutely packed. Not my favorite bus ride, but at least I had an ocean view as we inched our way along the coast.

Checked out of Montpellier apartment and drove to Arles for a short visit. Parking was difficult, but we managed to find a space. Walked into the city center past the Roman Colliseum and Theater- quite impressive. Went to the Foundation Vincent Van Gogh museum, which had a few lesser paintings by Vincent and a slew of mediocre paintings by 20th century female artists. Not impressive. We then went to the Place where the Vincent Van Gogh Cafe (Starry Night) is located for a few pics. Very sweet. Speaking of sweet, we had ice cream in that same Place. Then we moved on to the Place de la Republic with its 4th century obelisk and the incredible 15th century Eglise de Saint Tromphime. Headed back to the car and drove to the Marseilles airport to drop off our roller skate. Got an Uber to our apartment in Marseilles, run by a very nice man named Franck. Walked all the way round the Parc Longchamp in search of dinner, which we found at a tapas place.

Alice habite à Bruxelles. Elle est une chatte spéciale, non seulement elle est intelligente, affectueuse, avec une doux pelage noir, mais aussi elle peut parler. Elle ne sait pas pourquoi, mais son père et sa mère pouvaient parler aussi. Malheureusement, Alice est seule au monde. Ses parents sont morts il y a deux ans. Ils étaient très vieux, ils avaient 20 ans. Alice est souvent triste parce qu’elle n’a pas d’ami. En fait, elle ne peut pas communiquer avec les autres chats, elle peut seulement parler avec les humains. Comme tous les matins elle prend le tram 7, descend à Longchamp et va au Bois de la cambre pour regarder le petit lac.

Mais ce matin quelque chose de nouveau arrive. Dans le tram il y a un vieil homme tenant un poulet, immobile, apparemment mort. Un chat blanc le regarde tout le temps.

Enfin, le chat saute et attaque le poulet qui commence à se tortiller. Sur quoi, une dame crie “Ce poulet est toujours vivant ! Ce poulet est toujours vivant !”. Le vieil homme descend à Longchamp avec le poulet, suivi du chat qui ne veut pas abandonner le poulet et d'Alice qui veut aller au parc. Dans la rue, le chat blanc pousse Alice et lui dit “bouge je suis pressé !”. Alice est surprise, c'est la première fois qu'elle entend un autre chat parler, à part ses parents, et elle se met à le suivre. Sur quoi, Alice le poursuit et lui crie “Arrête, je suis comme toi ! Moi aussi je sais parler !”. Le chat blanc s'arrête et se présente. C’est le conte de la première rencontre entre Alice et le chat blanc Richard.
