#TravelThursday Aussies and New Zealanders have been international travellers since, well, the moment we could pull on a backpack, and board a boat or plane to places needing a stamp in our passports. Back in the 1970s, New Zealand Tourism had a fun, cheeky, very effective campaign telling Kiwis; "Don't leave home 'til you've seen the country". 2020 and 2021 are the years for Aussies to see the country. Starting in your own backyard. You'll be surprised what you discover. #visitbigvolcano #goldcoast #discovergoldcoast #goldcoastlife #coombabah #helensvale #themeparks #queensland #exploregoldcoast #nationalparks #parksandgardens #secretdestination #naturalattractions #familyfun #freeattraction #hiddentreasures #familyexperience #discoverholidayplaces #Repost @igersgoldcoast • • • • • • The Coombabah Lake Conservation Park is a beautiful spot to escape the rat race and to see an array of birds, roos and wildlife. Congratulations @untold.visuals and thanks for tagging #igersgoldcoast! Background Study for Project
WEEK 10, 11 & 12
Arbor Day at Waiwhakareke
Rotokauri- on my walk
During the COVID lockdown, I traveled back to Hamilton to my home with my family. I spent a bit of my time going for walks around our area and the lake. It was nice to be back home as I was born and have grown up in Hamilton within the Rotokauri area. Throughout my childhood I would go for morning walks with my mum in particular and my nana when she would visit. My primary school is also within very close proximity to my house so I would walk daily to and from school. I shared my bubble with my family, brother and two parents. This was nice as it brought us all back together as both me and now my brother live in Wellington now.
Over the years the area has been developed and built up with homes, especially as our home was one of the few early homes built in the area. So we have had a good connection to the land and development of the area. Since being at the school and having now left, I have seen many changes since. Such as more footpaths being created, more school area warnings such as road paint markings and electronic signage to keep the area safer during school hours. Native trees have also been a big part of our community especially during my time at primary school as it brought out]r community together with different planting activities and events. Some within the school and others involving the wider area such as schools from Hamilton city. In particular, once ( launched in 2004) a year schools would come together to the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park (a short walk from Rotokauri school) to plant around 20,000 native trees each year to help sustain the wildlife birds we have in our Rotokauri area.
Natural weather patterns in the area consist of fog build up in the low valley sections in the early mornings. In our area, we are surrounded by mountains including mount Pirongia in the distance where the sun sets behind at night. The Waikato is known for its farmland and agriculture and within my area, it consists of lifestyle blocks and farming lands. Filled with sheep, cows, and also a large population of ducks because of the lakes around.
Tikanga is the way of doing and Maori way of life and is seen in this with the community keeping nature and the area respected.
Kumamoto stream
The experience in the space she created is catered for everyone, people who know the history and background, or for people who know nothing and still understand and appreciate the choices that were made. She wanted the space to be remembered in the back of your mind whilst walking through and after leaving the space.
more than 2500 people attending the 2015 event, Each year around 20,000 plants are planted by the community
this long-term planting program will see the remaining 34 hectares planting in native species.
The name of the lake where we planted the plants are (Waiwhakareke) translates as (wai) water (whakareke) to plunge a pole.
The reason for this program starting was to restore what was once there before the return of rare plants and wildlife to the project area. As well as reconnecting current and future generations in with their environment through this education engagement  - ‘Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is the flagship project for biodiversity in our city. This is a science-based, community-led project, representing a vision of bringing back Hamilton’s native flora and fauna.’ - Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, https://www.hamilton.govt.nz/our-city/parks/parksandgardens/waiwhakareke/Pages/default.aspx
In the 1820s European settlers began arriving in the area and cutting down native trees particularly the kauri trees to use as wakas from the swamplands which this area was and now is. Then after the 1860’s, they began to drain the area and from the swamp land; till now it has been used for farming
(In pre-European times) the land was used for Maori taking their goods to trade across the Tasman Sea.
The lake and surrounding area is now owned by the Hamilton city council as well as Waikato University, Wintec, Waikato Regional Council
Stated by Professor Bruce Clarkson, ‘dean of science and engineering, has students helping monitor the progress of the trees and sees the restoration as an amazing opportunity to revive our cultural and ecological landscapes.’ - Twins dig deep to recreate past, Marnie Hallahan, 05:00, Jun 04 2011- stuff.co.nz
“Studies in 2006-2008 indicated very poor water quality and show little improvement over the period of testing.” - by Duggan, University of Waikato, Page 33, Operative Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park Management Plan, 2011
The shape of the lake has changed only slightly since 1865 as it used to be the head of an ancient stream
Prior to settlement in the 1860’s flax traders and mission stations
“first European to have passed through the Hamilton West area was named Korehako sometime during the late 1820s”  - https://www.hamilton.govt.nz/our-council/council-publications/districtplans/ODP/Documents/Rotokauri%20Greenway%20NOR/NOR%20App%20F.pdf November 19th, 2018 Sian Keith Archaeology Ltd. page11

Back to the award-winning Vauboin Priory Garden.
