hiii rsl enthusiasts !!
i don’t know if this is going to make any sense (and this may be common knowledge & im just silly) BUT the first time i saw robert sean leonard’s name written as rsl i was deeply confused because in australia (where i dwell) an rsl is!! something else!!
here it stands for the Returned and Services League of Australia. it’s a support organisation for people who have/are serving in the australian defence force. a subsection of the rsl are rsl clubs, and often that's what people refer to. it's worth noting that some clubs don't associate themselves with the services league anymore & are now separate entities. the title 'RSL Club' is on a lot of the entrances! the clubs are usually set up as a bar with a restaurant. a lot of them have gambling machines (pokies), and some have arcades and motels attached to them (there’s a whole movement to remove all gambling machines from the clubs though!!)
pretty much anyone can go to one, but there are 18+ sections where you have to show ID. a lot of towns/cities have their own local rsl (mine is 10 mins away)
a bunch of companies host annual parties/gatherings there, and it’s a pretty standard place for families to have celebrations. it’s a whole thing here (at least where im from in nsw!!) to talk about ‘going to the rsl’ if you're gonna grab drinks. they’re also referred to as ‘rissole’, and one might say ‘fancy catching a bevvy up the rissole’. anyway now when i hear people irl referring to going to the rsl my brain produces an image of an australianised robert sean leonard drinking beer at my local club 👍🏻 thank u for ur time 🫡

How video game journalism kickstart my media career
Tumblr media
On July 8, 2024, it was announced that Kotaku Australia and many other third-party brands will be shut down by Nine Entertainment/Pedestrian Group. When the news broke, many journalists who lost their jobs mourned. The same can be said for other journalists and Australian media members, who emphasized that this is another blow in Australian media. This was somewhat expected as the Nine Network announced that it would lay off multiple staff members due to budget cuts as the Australian media giants could not renew a deal with Meta under the media bargaining code.
As someone who has worked professionally in journalism since 2018, I feel for these people. At the same time, it's a shock to see how the gaming and tech news space is slowly dwindling. I know this first-hand as my old place of employment was the first to stumble, which led to many of my co-workers losing their jobs, just days before Christmas.
So as part of my "Australian Gaming Journalism" Eulogy, here is my take on the whole situation, how gaming journalism is important and how it kickstarted my career.
Where it all began
Tumblr media
Video game journalism played a huge role in my career as it was where people noticed my potential to play a role in this industry before I realized it was my calling.
In 2012, my dad was approached by a convention attendee, asking if I was his daughter because my Q&A question during the EBGames Expo was "really good" for someone my age. My question addressed mental health in video games, and whether it made things better or worse.
The next was in 2016. My first year journalism class had this non-graded assignment, where we were tasked to listen to the people we passed by and pitch something the next day. This was supposed to teach us that "a story can be found anywhere, even in everyday conversation." My first pitch was "I witnessed Opal ticket officers playing Pokemon GO using the same device to check our tickets. while on the job" My lecturer got excited for a second and told me to write a full report, like actually report on it. I was still a first year university student, and I had no idea what just happened.
Sadly, I didn't get the chance to do so due to a variety of reasons, one of them being I didn't have media law training yet to report on something that involved Opal and NSW Transport. But this first pitch made my lecturer see something in me that I have yet to discover. I did make up for it by covering the Phil Spencer's keynote address for the student newspaper.
TLDR - Video games made people notice that I have the potential to become a journalist.
There is more to video game journalism than just reviews
Tumblr media
Video game journalism is more than just "video game reviews" or talking about the next game release. It's about reporting on the latest happenings in the industry, the shifts game devs are making, and how this billion-dollar industry is impacting society.
And it's not just my personal stories. There were other events in this field worth talking about. There are video game influencers raising funds for charity, indie companies making strides and making innovations, how accessibility and representation became a form of discussion, video game preservation, media adaptations, and in some cases, how video games are being utilized by the government (looking at you City of Melbourne).
Video Games shaped my journalism career
Tumblr media
For those saying "video game journalism is a waste of resources," think again. My career started with video game journalism. People saw potential in a young girl who had no idea what she was doing. She just pitch and ask questions in a topic that was very familiar to her. All of this shaped my career and I'm truly grateful for it.
Not only did this journalism genre shape my career, but it also got me recognized in the Australian journalism space. It also gave me the opportunity to expand my passion and consider entertainment and pop culture reporting. Meanwhile, other reporters who started in video game journalism expanded towards science, tech and IT, and business reporting. I know someone who's trying to get a PHD because of it. This niche genre is a launchpad for so many reporters and other professionals and it's a shame that it's completely underfunded.
This is a niche in journalism that needs respect and recognition as it gives up-and-rising writers a platform to get published and write something they're passionate about. It's not a waste of time, it's a valuable resource with untapped potential.

This is me, in 2016, a Save Sydney's Museum
Tumblr media
The State Government - (Who's still in power btw) wanted to close it down. 7 years later, iThey're still trying to end this museum.
They may not going to tear it (most of it) down any more, but it's no longer going to be a museum.
The Powerhouse Museum is the best. It's full of all kinds of machines and artifacts, and all kinds of technology.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This, plus the regular exhibitions of all sorts of things.
By 2020, the government apparently stopped the closure. They certainly made most of the media think of if that way, which took a lot of the heat off them. The museum supporters (including former curators, directors, other still active museum consultants, and the architect of the museum, many of whom I got to meet)
But now the the Liberal National Party wants to strip it all out. Wit "a new focus on fashion and design" they want to leave it mostly empty space, and turn it into a function center.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They want to build accomodation and a library, but very little of it will be actual museum. They want to strip out the iconic arched hallway, and put in boring concrete cafe style spaces.
Tumblr media
They're even going to strip museum from the name.
My favourite museum, a place which inspired so many, reduced to a venue.
There's an election coming up on my state of NSW. There's plenty of other things at stake too, cost of living, price of water and power, housing, many costs have gone up as the LNP government sells of everything it can get it's hands on.
There's a lot at stake. I'm kinda scared, bit the LNP have been a bit of a mess, fighting amongst themselves lately. I have my fingers crossed.

Blatantly Partisan Party Review VI (NSW 2023): Group G (Silvana Nile / Revive Australia Party)
Prior reviews (as the Christian Democratic Party): federal 2013, federal 2016, NSW 2019, federal 2019
What I said before: “The CDP sees no place in society for people who think, behave, or believe differently to them. Unless you worship the strict, narrowly-defined, judgemental, petty god to whom the CDP claims allegiance, this party is not for you.” (federal 2019)
What I think this year: This is all just a little bit weird really. Fred Nile was first elected to the NSW Legislative Council in 1981 for the Call to Australia Party, the predecessor of the Christian Democratic Party. He has been in the NSW parliament for over 40 years now; he is 88 years old. He secured the election of his first wife alongside himself for 14 years, the late Elaine Nile, and his second wife Silvana is running this year.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Fred announced his retirement in 2021, endorsing Lyle Shelton as his successor. But then he rescinded the deal (eat shit Lyle) and has served out his term. The CDP dissolved in 2022 and Nile joined Seniors United, but it too has been dissolved. He again announced his retirement in October 2022, but—you can see where this is going—announced last month that he’d stand again. Weirdly, he’s the second candidate to his wife Silvana, and they are the only two candidates in Group G. They do not get a square above the line (you need 15 candidates for that) and even if they had a square above the live and Silvana won election, there’s no chance they’d get a high enough vote for Fred to win a seat from second place. Why is he going out on a loss rather than retiring with dignity? Strange stuff.
Anyway, don’t vote for the Niles, they’re awful bigots. I would say they’ve leapt on the latest bandwagon of bile against drag queens, but Fred’s been pulling that particular wagon since he came to prominence as an opponent of Mardi Gras in the 1980s. Forty years down the track and he has not become a better person.
Recommendation: Give Group G (Silvana Nile / Revive Australia Party) a weak or no preference.

Community welcomes new law banning conversion practices in SA

Community welcomes new law banning conversion practices in SA
Tumblr media
Survivors and community organisations have welcomed the passing of a law banning LGBTQA+ conversion practices in South Australia.
The SA government bill passed 13 votes to 8 on Tuesday night.
“This new law confirms we are not broken, disordered or in need of fixing,” Equality Australia CEO Anna Brown said.
“The legislation is not perfect but it’s an important step forward, and it will protect thousands of vulnerable South Australians into the future.”
Ms Brown thanked SA survivors and advocates for their tireless work over many years.
“I hope this is a moment of great pride and healing for those brave people who have made South Australia a better place for generations to come,” she said.
“This law will save countless people from a lifetime of pain and in some cases save lives.”
The new law criminalises conversion practices that seek to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
Importantly, the law provides redress to survivors through a civil pathway and makes it illegal to take someone out of SA to undergo a conversion practice. The SA Commissioner for Equal Opportunity can also disseminate information and conduct research and education about conversion practices.
Government responds to community concerns
In response to community concerns, the government confirmed that conversion practices could be reported outside the 12-month time limit set under the Equal Opportunity Act.
Third-party reporting will also be considered as part of a broader overhaul in the near future.
Amendments to outlaw single instances of conversion practices were voted down but Equality Australia will continue advocating to strengthen the laws.
“Practices that were experienced by every one of the local survivors we worked with are illegal under this law and we will continue advocating to ensure the scheme is strengthened,” Ms Brown said.
Legislation has already been passed in Victoria, the ACT, and most recently in NSW. Queensland has a ban on conversion practices in health settings, while Tasmania and Western Australia have committed to reforms.
SA Rainbow Advocacy Alliance (SARAA) Chair Leeann Friday said SARAA would continue putting pressure on the government to ensure family or friends who witness conversion practices can report it.
“Survivors should not be made to bear the burden of enforcing this ban alone,” she said.

1. Create Lasting Memories
One of the main reasons to consider hiring a photobooth is that it helps you capture candid and fun moments from your event. While professional photographers may focus on staged shots, photobooths allow guests to let loose, strike playful poses, and create memories that will be cherished for years to come. With options to print photos instantly, guests leave with a keepsake from your event.
2. Fun for All Ages
Photobooths offer something for everyone, regardless of age. Kids, teenagers, and adults alike love stepping into the booth, grabbing props, and posing for photos. It’s an inclusive activity that adds entertainment without needing constant attention. Whether it’s a group shot, solo portrait, or couples’ pose, the photo booth accommodates all kinds of guests.
3. Customizable Experience
Today’s photo booths come with a variety of customization options, allowing you to match the booth to your event’s theme. From elegant backdrops and props for weddings to quirky setups for birthday parties, you can choose features that suit the occasion. Photo strips or digital prints can also be personalized with logos, dates, or messages, adding a personal touch.
4. Social Media Sharing & Instant Prints
Modern photobooths come equipped with technology that allows guests to share their photos instantly on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This not only adds an element of digital fun but also boosts the visibility of your event online. Additionally, many booths offer instant prints, so guests walk away with a physical copy of their photos, which can be customized with borders, filters, or even event branding.
Types of Photobooths for Hire in Sydney
When it comes to hiring a photobooth in Sydney, NSW, you have a variety of options to choose from. Each type of booth brings its own unique features to the table, depending on the style of your event.
1. Open-Air Photobooth
An open-air photobooth is ideal for larger gatherings because it can accommodate bigger groups. Unlike traditional enclosed booths, this type is more spacious and allows guests to use creative backdrops. Perfect for weddings, corporate events, and large parties, the open-air setup encourages more spontaneous and fun group shots.
2. GIF Booth
The GIF booth is one of the most popular choices for parties and social media-driven events. Instead of static images, a GIF booth captures multiple frames that are stitched together into an animated GIF. Guests can then share their creations instantly online, adding an interactive, digital element to your event.
3. 360° Spin Booth
For those looking to wow their guests, the 360° spin booth offers a full-body, rotating video experience. Guests stand on a platform while a camera rotates around them, capturing dynamic footage that can be shared as a slow-motion video or short clip. It’s perfect for high-profile events, product launches, or any occasion where you want to make a lasting impression.
What Events Are Perfect for Photobooth Hire?
Photobooths can enhance virtually any event, but they’re especially popular for the following:
1. Weddings
Weddings are one of the most common occasions for photobooth hire in Sydney. A wedding photobooth gives guests an entertaining activity during the reception, while also creating fun and personalized keepsakes. With customizable backdrops, elegant props, and personalized photo strips, a wedding photobooth adds both fun and sentimentality to the big day.
2. Corporate Events
Corporate functions, from product launches to company parties, can benefit from a photobooth setup. It provides a way for employees and clients to mingle and capture the fun moments from the event. With branding options, such as customized photo strips or branded backdrops, a photobooth can also serve as a subtle marketing tool.
3. Birthday Parties
Whether it’s a 21st birthday bash or a milestone celebration, a photobooth is a great addition to any birthday party. Guests can capture silly poses, play with props, and take home photo strips that serve as a memento of the celebration.
4. School Events

4th of September, or rather, 9/4
there’s a market for and access to everything (even dog agility)
So many Chanels but they all show the same thing for ages then something else for ages
Everything is linked like the phone plan without subscriptions to stuff
Everyone wants to give you a credit card except for to me because I can’t get a social security number
Things are small. In Japan things are small but it all kind of works. It in Australia things are small and annoying but in the US you just get the size of fridge and burners that are really convenient (albiet in my opinion at times a bit excessive)
People are the perfect amount of friendly. People don’t really talk to you all of the time but people are friendly. Other places Americans are too friendly so by comparison they probably think New York is rude but it’s not really
There’s a lot of name for sandwiches (hero’s)?
There’s different names for things: clothespin, trashcan
Everyone has a number you can call and everyone’s happy to help you. So much of Australia is emails and going into medicare and Service NSW
Energy drinks are so cheap
It’s like being in the best conversation at a party
People ask if you want everything on stuff
People don’t say it’s such a shame
People are actually really happy to be here and agree it’s a great city - maybe because there’s mostly immigrants
I’m so grateful to live on an earth where New York exists. The density, the hustle and bustle, the people yelling about stuff either in a friendly manner to someone their with, on the phone, or just good old fashioned yellin about stuff. I’m happy here because the city is absolutely pure magic and Ritchie is happy here too and loves the kitchen and the house is fantastic.
The house is weirdly dark but honestly we know so much about what makes a house good or bad that we are pretty confident it’s awesome here. It’s so well designed for us and our area is amazing, I am going to be here for a while and I fucking love this city.
I’m having the familiar thoughts of “we need more time here” as ideas of touristy things like museums and galleries are thrown in with normal every day things like wandering midtown or getting high at the park. It’s so normal to be thinking in how many weekends we are somewhere. Prior to this, even just being in Seoul for 7 weekends was monumental and I can’t help but calculate that 6 months is 24 weekends but the idea that there could be heaps more here if we like it is so deeply exciting and energising.

Evicting a tenant for non-genuine reasons? You could soon face a fine in this state
Key PointsNSW landlords would need to have a good reason to move tenants on, Premier Minns has said. The changes would bring NSW into line with other states, including the ACT, South Australia and Victoria. With about a third of NSW’s eight million-plus residents renting, Minns said the market was the toughest in decades. NSW Premier Chris Minns has detailed the grounds landlords will be able to use to remove tenants from homes as part of a ban on no-grounds evictions. Landlords could be fined for making up a “non-genuine reason” for punting a tenant under NSW laws to scrap no-grounds evictions. Premier Chris Minns told Sunday’s NSW Labor conference in Sydney his government was aiming to introduce legislation to end the practice in September, making good on a 2023 election promise. Under the proposed reforms, homeowners would need valid reasons to end tenancies for both periodic and fixed-term leases. These would include existing rules for breach of lease, damage to property or non-payment of rent. Other eviction reasons would include a property being sold or offered for sale with vacant possession, a property requiring significant repairs, renovations or demolition, or a property no longer being used as a rental. A homeowner would not be able to re-list a property for at least four weeks should the eviction be sought on renovation or repair grounds. Landlords could also kick out renters if they were no longer eligible for an affordable housing program or if the property was purpose-built student accommodation and the renter was no longer a student. Under the legislation: The owner would need to supply evidence with a termination notice, with penalties payable by homeowners providing non-genuine reasons. The termination notice period for fixed-term agreements of less than six months would be lifted from 30 to 60 days and from 60 to 90 days for those more than six months.Notice periods for periodic agreements would remain unchanged. The changes would bring NSW into line with other states, including the ACT, South Australia and Victoria. With about a third of NSW’s eight million-plus residents renting, Minns said the market was the toughest in decades and suggested the reforms would give both homeowners and tenants more certainty. Chris Minns said the reforms would give both homeowners and tenants more certainty. Source: AAP / Dan Himbrechts “There will still be reasonable grounds to end a tenancy … it just can’t just be to put up the rent,” he told party faithful. “Something has to change — we are losing twice as many young people as we are taking in — and the next generation feels locked out of the place they were brought up. “Young people are fleeing our cities and towns and moving to cheaper places, not even to regional NSW, which we know is very expensive as well, but moving to other states.” Housing Now! chair David Borger said the reforms would help ensure renters who follow the rules and take care of their homes can live without the fear of sudden eviction. “By aligning with other states that have already implemented similar laws, NSW is setting a new standard for renter protections,” he said. Committee for Sydney chief executive Eamon Waterford said the no-grounds evictions ban could be the single most effective action the government takes to address the housing crisis. “Unfair rental laws are not only hurting people’s well-being, they’re slowing the state’s productivity,” he said. Greens MP Jenny Leong, chairing the inquiry, welcomed the government’s announcement but said tens of thousands of people had been evicted in the time it had taken for movement on a pre-election commitment. “We are thrilled Labor has finally got their act together and is moving forward,” she said. “It has taken a Greens bill coupled with the threat of a lashing from the experts in this inquiry to force Labor to finally act on their long-overdue promise.” Source link via The Novum Times

Mental Illness Group Support in Canberra

They hold regular meetings in places like healthcare services, community centres and local halls. These may include guest speakers and social activities. They also provide information and advice to people living with lung conditions.
The With Friends Initiative
The 'With Friends Initiative' was started by Canberra mum Ros Kewley as a way to get her neurodivergent son out and about during the pandemic. The initiative runs social activities that are age appropriate for young, neurodivergent adults. From dinner parties to escape rooms, the initiative provides a safe and supportive community.
Meetings are held in healthcare services, community centres and local halls. They often feature guest speakers and offer discussion opportunities. Many support groups are also online, where participants can interact via message boards and social media. This helps you to stay anonymous if that is your preference.
Carers ACT
Carers ACT is the peak body for unpaid family and friends who care for someone with a disability, chronic health condition, mental illness or who is frail aged. It provides peer support groups in person and online, training, and information.
The organisation also runs the 5 Ways to Wellbeing program which introduces people to five simple and effective ways of improving their mental health.
Each public service care agency and associated provider must ensure that their officers, employees and agents take into account the principles of the Statement when developing, implementing or providing care supports. This obligation does not conflict with any law of the Commonwealth.
Silver Rainbow
Silver Rainbow is the national LGBTI aged care organisation that supports the health and wellbeing of older LGBTI people. It works to create a more LGBTI inclusive aged care sector by providing subsidised staff training, Champions training and community of practice support.
The Rainbow Hub at COTA SA hosts social events, community visitor programs and can help LGBTI people navigate the aged care system. They also deliver LGBTI inclusion training for aged care service providers, and publish an e-newsletter to keep community members up to date.
The ACT’s Rainbow Hub is a member of the NSW-based National LGBTI Ageing Network and is supported by LGBTIQ+ Health Australia. They work collaboratively to improve referral networks, share best practice and advocate for better local services for LGBTIQA+ people.
Women With Disabilities ACT (WWDACT)
ACT-based systemic advocacy and peer support organisation for women* with disabilities (including feminine identifying, non-binary and trans people). WWDACT has a strong focus on human rights.
Sue recalls a time when she was nervous about taking the first steps into frontline advocacy. She quickly realised that this would be no ‘graceful retirement’ for her.
WWDACT aims to empower, connect and inspire carers so that they can care for their loved ones and maintain their own wellbeing. They also help to raise expectations for individuals with disability through conferences, workshops and 1:1 support. They believe that a connected community can realise better life chances for all.
Transgender Health Australia
Transgender Health Australia is the national peak body that works to strengthen the health, rights and wellbeing of all trans people – binary and non-binary. Their Board and Sub-Committees include trans health professionals, and incredible cis allies.
The organisation offers a variety of support pathways for gender diverse people, their families, and their friends. They also provide training and resources for healthcare professionals.
Their work includes a Gender Affirming Doctor List, and advocacy for better local services for the community. They are also a hub for information, resources and community networks in Canberra and the NSW region. You can find out more here.

Blatantly Partisan Party Review XII (NSW 2023): Shooters, Fishers and Farmers
Prior reviews: federal 2013, VIC 2014, federal 2016, VIC 2018, NSW 2019, federal 2019, federal 2022, VIC 2022
What I said before: “This party would dismantle every policy that confines gun ownership to its legitimate grounds ... It’s not even funny to scroll through their ranting.” (federal 2022)
What I think this year: Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Amazing how they manage to be wrong on everything: the lead articles on their website are anti-environment rants and shilling in favour of problem gambling. But of course worst of all is their approach to firearms. I reiterate what I’ve said before: I’m from a rural family, I know the value of a rifle on a farm, and I know this party is full of shit.
Australia has had extraordinary success with its gun laws, but it produced the Christchurch terrorist and it has not adequately faced up to this legacy of armed violence. Do most voters even realise that the last NSW election happened in the shadow of an NSW-raised terrorist murdering 51 people in Christchurch, or that the fourth anniversary was earlier this month? The fact the answer to this is obviously “no” reflects very, very, very poorly on Australia.
When I voted in the 2019 NSW election, I made a point of putting the SFF last. A fortnight out, it possibly seemed like a tough choice, with the likes of Mark Latham and David Leyonhjelm also on the ballot, but I have always possessed a special derision for gun nuts and the tragedy in Christchurch confirmed my choice to place the lead SFF candidate last. This party has not been properly asked to face up to the consequences of their pro-gun ideology and this is frankly poor form by the NSW political media.
As it happens, the SFF has experienced quite significant ruptures in the past year. Helen Dalton, member for Murray, quit the party in 2022. SFF’s leader, Rob Borsak, remarked in parliament that Dalton should be “clocked”, and when he failed to apologise or retract his remarks, two other MPs quit the party. This meant SFF lost all three of its lower house members, leaving Borsak and Mark Basaniak in the upper house.
What a surprise the leader of a party called the Shooters would be unapologetic about violent language. You should be unapologetic about giving SFF a tremendously bad preference.
Recommendation: Give the Fans of Gun Violence Party a weak or no preference.
