Season 3 -Surrealism and its psychoanalysis of Carmy Berzatto

Stick with me here if you like. I'm here to talk about how this season it dove into a psychoanalysis and surrealist style cinema on Carmy and his sexual urges. @currymanganese @caiusmarciuscoriolanus & @vacationship discussed in another thread the surrealism of this season with its close shots and quick cuts as well as leaning into faint storytelling and a focus on moving images. Surrealist Cinema connects with Sigmund Freud's principles in creating this film style.

Surrealist films are connected to Sigmund Freud's ideas about dreams and the unconscious mind. These filmmakers used strange, unexpected scenes and bizarre images to depict what’s going on deep in our minds, creating movies that feel like crazy, vivid dreams. The Surrealists ran with this idea in their art to capture pure thoughts from the unconscious mind.

Freud's ideas are super handy for understanding Surrealist art. Early on, Freud figured out that dreams are like visual poems, using metaphors to show our unconscious thoughts and desires. But our minds censor these dreams, turning the original thoughts into metaphors through something called displacement and condensation.

The filming this season prioritized mood over storytelling, which is another interesting aspect. It also featured a surrealistic style of non-linear moving images like in Episode 3x01 Tomorrow- non linear in Carmy's unconscious stream of thought. This symbolism also shown through the displacement of scenes and images.

What is Displacement?

Freud thought Displacement was the important part of dream work, and surrealist felt this way with film. It swaps out objects or concepts with symbols to hide the real meaning. Surrealist filmmakers committed to this act of symbolism. Symbolism is a figure of speech of a character's actions, words, and events that has a deeper meaning.

One example of symbolism from Freud defines that knives often symbolize male genitalia and boxes symbolize female genitalia in dreams.

What are the odds of a parallel between knives and boxes, and it's only Carmy and Sydney being frustrated by the tasks of cutting and breaking down boxes?

It's the symbolism of sexual frustration between them.

Textbook Sublimation

Another Freud concept is sublimation - this is defined as redirecting sexual desire into socially acceptable behaviors or new aims that are still related to the sexual impulse. (AKA Carmy wants a star, not just to beat Chef David- but what carmy truly wants sexually is to please Sydney)

Remember what Richie said about Carmy as he shouts at him and then Carmy looks at Sydney?

Let's definite what textbook sublimation is:

My theory is that Richie told Carmy that he sees him for who he really is. He knows Carmy and knows that he never wanted Claire in the first place. Richie is aware of the tension between Sydney and Carmy, and Carmy's been repressing it all along. Richie is very observant; look at how he observes the tension between Carmy and Sydney.

Bonus: Look how Carmy stares at Sydney- he could care less about the Faks in this moment. He's feeling bad for giving her a headache but he wants to fight some more.

Remember, we theorize here that season 3 breaks into the fourth wall. At that moment, Richie is talking to the audience, giving us a rundown of why Carmy avoids and creates a prison in his mind. We didn't get a clear answer because we were inside Carmy's mind throughout the season. He was experiencing confusion, repression of his urges, and an inability to feel the pain he was going through. Another thing is that he could not accept any joy or love in his life.

I believe the decision to create a surrealist-style season is great because it complements Carmy's avant-garde food style, through which he communicates his artistic thoughts and feelings.

Through the image, we see that Carmy is in a dreamlike state, gazing at the dish he created unconsciously, which matches Sydney's scarf. This hits at the core truth of his desires that he does not want to address. Sydney is the real fun, joy, and amusement that can happen, but he's been sabotaging and repressing since day one, even with the choice of dating Claire. Carmy is more addicted to adrenaline, stress, chaos, and guilt.

I believe the bear in his dream symbolizes the Carmy's unconscious and repressed feelings - desires, guilt, and longing. These emotions overwhelm him as he returns home and processes his grief. The phrase "let it rip" carries multiple meanings, but in this case, I interpret it as a call for him to embrace his emotions and be true to himself.

The twist

NO! IT CANNOT!

Quit stalling, Syd! We gotta get back to the "Family style, two tops, booths" moment! And for that, she has to speak up!

She has to make HER move.

Whilst I agree with her on that not being the best timing, that conversation she has been avoiding is the one thing that can unstuck them from that dreadful place they are now trapped in till next season.

It's such an awful torment for us to have to wait a year for this resolution because, like I said → here they didn't throw us a bone of hope this time around and we know that everything depends on the choice she makes. The whole plot is in her hands right now and she can twist it as she pleases. Sydney's character may have been deprived of her well-deserved screentime, but it hasn't been written off or put aside at all, she's just in a tacit way everpresent since she received that offer and she started to "have a think".

Don't be fooled by this lay out and fucked up turn of events, chefs: Her character is now more central than ever. She can change it all.

I have a pretty good idea of who what she will choose and my rock solid reasons for not being worried. But patience is not my forte and this is the definition of torture for me.

All my hopes are now put on WTF will Carmy do after seeing that review:

If he changes his route and heads to Syd's apartment, we're golden because having that conversation right after that panic attack for Syd is the best thing that can happen to her, due to her avoidant nature. Having her defenses down and being forced by her own body to be vulnerable is the best scenario for her to really open up to Carmy, tell him she's thinking about leaving and whatever else she feels at the moment, just let it all out, for instance, why she's having such hard time accepting that offer, why she felt alone AGAIN after he told her that was not gonna happen again, etc. All of that has to be voiced out by her and even though he's definitely not in the best place to hear it right now, then again he may never be, the fact that he will see her in such a vulnerable state will force him to have to deal with it and then he will be able to open up too about how he doesn't want her to leave, but he won't stop her and then she can freely make that choice. I hope all of this happens in 04x01 and it wouldn't be a stretch at all.

BUT NOTHING CAN HAPPEN IF SHE KEEPS AVOIDING IT.

It all depends on Syd now. She's the twist.

For this third day it was impossible for me to choose between my two main ships and writing for both would become too complex for my poor burnt neurons.

As a timeline, I projected them after all the events of Chaos Theory (Yes, I am a big supporter of Brooklynn is Sydney theory)

I wanted to give a change of look to Darius and I must say that I really like that hairstyle on him, while for Brooklynn I tried to make her hair a little more wavy still keeping them short, also imagine them in a more purple shade. I added some scars because yeah, something was missing without them!

While for Yaz and Sammy, there is not much to say, they would be perfect in any context, come on look at them!! But I must admit that the pirate style shirt on our cowgirl has really conquered me!

The Bear in 5 Acts : We're really in the Act III weeds, pals

One of the first thing's they'll teach you about good story telling is about the 5 act structure - it's tried and tested, from Shakespeare to films like I don't know, Past Lives, they all follow the same beats.

I think's it's significant that the title card at the this season and maybe season 2 (I'm gonna have to go back to check) says "The Bear Part III"; these seasons are components of a cohesive whole, it's not being made up as they go along. This is part of the reason why the writing and filming is so quick: the bare bones of the story arc is already there, they are just embellishing and perfecting.

Season 3 thoughts under the cut!

Now, I know Season 3 has the crowd split. My initial reaction was that I loved the cinema of it: the first episode I think was one of the best, most innovative bits of TV I've seen in a minute. I really enjoyed how they played with memory and anxiety. The show had a lot of interesting things to say about grief and regret and shame this season, and the ways we cope with it all.

It also cemented for me that The Bear is following v classical 5 act storytelling.

Act 1/ Season 1: Almost pure exposition, and probably why it stands out as a very strong standalone season. You could get away with not watching any episodes after Braciole and still feel like you've watched a great show. The money in the tinned tomatoes, and Carmy's proposal (of a restaurant) to Sydney is the inciting event. You could also think of Sydney coming back as the inciting event - this is probably the first time in Carmy's life where someone outside of his family (maybe even including his family) has seen the worst of Carmy and decided to come back

Act 2/ Season 2: Rising tension. Will The Bear make it? Will Carmy escape his traumas? Will Sydney and Carmy actually find their way back to each other?

Act 3/ Season 3: This is where we are now. To mix metaphors. The traumas and bad copies strategies are coming home to roost. This is Carmy at his very worst, because somehow he thinks this is him at his best. This is how Backstage, a theatre newspaper describes Act III : "Oftentimes, the end of your third act leads into a “dark night of the soul,” where the main character is at their lowest moment as a result of the climax. They believe that they cannot achieve that new, overpowering goal established at the end of Act 1. " I think that pretty much sums up Carmy and Syd this season, on the surface their goals have been achieved: The Bear is a functioning kitchen, it's packed out every night. There's modern Danish design, there's two tops, a tasting menu at the bar, and a window on the side for the sandwiches (the family style has been scraped, but we'll get to that later). So why does it feel so off? Can it be that neither of them wanted any of that shit in the first place? Can it be that they were at their happiest eating gluey spaghetti with their friends they loved in a place that had regulars who knew them, a place they could innovate with the odds and ends they had lying around and still make wonderful food. Could it be that a place where bricklayers and teachers and postmen were eating was the goal all along?

Act 4/Season 4: Where next? I think both Syd and Carmy are gonna reckon with what is actually important to them. And we alreayd know what that is, it's that scene under the table last season: they love to take care of people, they love to cook (not be "chefs"), they love to be there for each other - be someone the other can rely on. Everything they absolutely were not doing in Season 3.

Act 5/ Season 5: The real coming back. I remember watching Braciole for the first time thinking fuck, is this just an extremely silly show? It feels so real, so earned all the way up until the cash falls out of those tomatoes and Syd comes back. Because nothing has actually been resolved or addressed. Carmy has learnt absolutely nothing. Syd is as impatient and green as ever, jumping into a new business with a guy who has absolutely shown himself to be volatile and unreliable. But we forgive them, because as the viewer we've come to love Carmy and understand that the angry, doughnut slamming Carmy is not the real him, and we understand Syd because sure, of course it feels intoxicating that when the person who made the best thing you've ever eaten, the person who can seemingly finish all your sentences, the pinnacle of your professional ambitions looks at you with his freakishly blue eyes, and ask you open a restaurant with him, you're gonna say yes. The series from Season 2 onwards feels to me like a redux of the last few episodes of Season 1 in slow-mo but this time with real learning, real consequences, and real, abiding love. Like a "find out what you love, and do it on purpose" type of thing. When they get back together the last episode it's going to feel even more magical than in Season 1.

Listen. I feel like that dude trying to get Tina et al to invest thousands of dollars to get a job in Napkins. It feels like a scam to tell you all to invest more time and hope. But, imma do it, because it's gonna pay off.

It also doesn't escape me that Strange Currencies, the song they use on the show to signpost Carmy's romantic life, has the lyrics "I need a chance, a second chance, a third chance, a fourth chance"

Carmy had a chance in season 1, he fucked it up by going absolutely bananas in 'Review', he had another one in season 2; and he ran away and then thought he could fix it with a fancy chef jacket and promises under a table, he's had another chance in season 3 and safe to say, he's fucked it again. He's gonna get another, but he better stick the landing.

Prestwald Hall

Hi guys!!

I'm sharing Prestwald Hall . This is the 9th building for my English Manors Collection, and I will add many more!

House History: Prestwold Hall was, for many years, the seat of the Packe family. Before that time, it was the home of the Skipwith family. After the death of Major Robert Christopher Packe (born c.1783) - one time Aide-de-camp to King George III - who was killed during the Battle of Waterloo, the hall passed to his nephew George Hussey Packe who held the hall and estate until his death in 1874.

The Hall was remodelled by architect William Burn in 1842–1844, incorporating the fabric of a mid-18th-century H-plan house. It was Grade I listed in 1951.

One of the finest rooms inside the house is the Entrance Hall with its richly coloured marbled plaster work in the Italian style. The painted ceiling was inspired by Raphael’s Vatican grotesques and incorporates miniature landscapes, showing the house before and after its remodelling between 1842 and 1844. Below the ceiling, wreathing the room, are small medallion busts of the poets from Chaucer to Scott, positioned in the spandrels and are likely inspired by Alberti's external arcade at the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini. An arcade opens on to a vaulted corridor leading to a top lit inner hall: these spaces also marbled. Off the corridor, the cantilevered stone staircase survives from the eighteenth century house, and was given its bracketed brass balusters by William Wilkins (1751-1815) in 1805.

The Dining Room, added by Wilkins in 1805, was incorporated into the remodelling undertaken by the Scottish architect William Burn in 1842. The room is overlooked by two dramatic full length portraits of Sir Edward Hussey Packe, KBE (1878 – 1946) and the Hon. Lady Mary Sydney Packe (née Colebrooke, 1890 – 1973) by the painter Glyn Philpot RA (1844 – 1947). The portrait of Lady Packe, painted in 1911, was described by the art historian Robin Gibson OBE as an ‘amazing feat of virtuosity’. Its elongated elegance and introspective characterisation is totally without the fashion-plate vulgarity of much Edwardian portraiture. Other portraits hang in this room of the Packe family including a painting of Sir Christopher Packe (1595 – 1682) who purchased the house in the 17th century painted by Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen (1593 –1661).

The library extends nearly the entire length of the house when the large doors that separate it from the drawing room are opened, connecting the two rooms. With clever use of constructional steel, William Burn was able to create these long adjoining rooms. The windows rise from floor level and open onto the garden which enhances the notion that Prestwold was designed in the style of an Italian classical villa. The doors and bookcases in library were made for George Hussey Packe (1846–1908) by Gillows of Lancaster and London in 1875.

A conservatory fills the recessed central bay at the front of the house, and projects out towards the garden. Behind the glass and elegant Doric pilasters, are well planted raised beds with a number of exotic plants and flowers

i think this is my new favorite thing ive ever written this is the cutest idea ever

It was early October of 2013. You had joined your boyfriend and his bandmates for a couple of shows on their Take Me Home tour since your schedule freed up for a couple of days.

You and Harry started dating towards the end of June of 2013 and everything had been going perfectly, except for the fact that he was on tour with the boys. You met in the middle of the tour, so you hadn't exactly been able to see him as much as you wanted after you first met. You texted if not called every day. Since you both were so young, it was hard to see each other, especially since he was halfway across the world, but you really really liked each other so you made it work.

Tour was so fun. His band was so fun. He was so fun. You just loved every second you have been there. You and Harry were still in the honeymoon stage so of course, he never wanted to leave your side. The only time you were apart was when he was either on stage or in the bathroom. He stuck by your side everywhere you all went and the PDA between you didn't go unnoticed by his bandmates. Harry isn't the biggest PDA person, especially since he and the boys were growing very quickly in the music industry and people constantly watch and talk about him, but since the relationship is so new and you're the first girl he feels this jittery about, he doesn't mind showing you a little sugar in front of his close friends and family.

It was obvious he was smitten by you. The giggles, the tickling, the cheek kisses, the hugs, the way he looks at you, how he constantly wants you by his side, all of it.

Currently, you all were in Sydney, Australia, and were hanging out backstage before the show. Harry had challenged you to a ping pong competition and currently, you were tied with the next point being the winning point. He served the ball to you and you hit it back and forth a few times before he missed his hit and the ball went bouncing on the floor (it was a super easy hit so you knew he let you win but you wanted to tease him).

He groaned and you squealed dramatically. You set the paddle down on the table and ran over to him, grabbing onto him and teasing him, "Harryyyy! You suck! You just got beat by a girl who's never played ping pong!"

He followed your actions and set his paddle down, bending down and lifting you up onto his waist, "whatever I let you win."

"You liar," you grinned while playing with the curls at the nape of his neck.

"Nuh uh," he grinned at you, his lips leaning closer to yours.

"Yuh huh," you giggled back against his lips before he gave you a sweet peck.

Little did either of you know, Niall and Louis were watching you both, grossed out but also happy for Harry at the same time.

"They're disgusting," Louis spoke.

"Try sharing a hotel room with them," Niall rolled his eyes, "she was scratching his back the other day. I wanted to fuckin' vomit."

"Ew, I saw him braiding her hair once," Louis added, "I didn't even know he knew how t' braid hair."

"She probably taught him. He's so in love with her," Niall teased.

"He doesn't hide it at all either," Louis chuckled back, "he's a totally different person around her. It's weird as shit seein' that side of Harold."

"Styles is officially a softie," Niall replied back.

Louis then made a whipped sound effect and Niall giggled at him in agreeance.

"At least he's not like Liam who sticks his fuckin' tongue down Sophia's throat no matter who's around."

The conversation between the boys trailed off and you two were no longer the center of their attention. It was a little bit later and the boys were lounging around in their dressing room, snacking on junk food while Lou pulled them aside one at a time for hair and makeup, Liam currently being the one in the chair, sadly about to miss out on the events that are going to occur next.

You had just got back from the bathroom and Harry patted his thighs, acknowledging that he wanted you to sit on his lap. You walked towards him and sat down on his left thigh, your legs hanging off of his right one before he spoke lowly, "I missed you."

"I was gone for 5 minutes," you chuckled softly at him, wrapping your right arm around his neck.

"Still missed you," he replied before pressing a kiss against your cheek.

"Will you two get a room?" Niall teased you both with a grin on his lips.

You blushed slightly as you and the rest of the boys giggled at him while Harry rolled his eyes, a soft smirk planted on his lips, "Shut up, 'm allowed t' kiss my girlfriend's cheek."

"Yer also allowed t' give 'er some space. Ya haven't stopped touchin' 'er since she got here!"

"Awww Nialler, leave 'em alone. He's in love!" Louis added, emphasizing the last part.

Your entire body heated up and you just knew your face was bright red. Harry was the opposite. The color drained from his face and you could physically feel him tense up under you.

"Oh my god, he hasn't said it yet," Zayn added, noticing Harry's panicked state.

Louis gasped, "You haven't said it yet? Harold, you make it so fuckin' obvious you love her."

"Fuck off!" Harry replied, giggling nervously.

"Y/N, Harry loves you!" Louis yelled as he began running out of the room.

Harry gently urged you off of his lap and you stood up, watching as he chased after Louis, the other boys following to watch the scene. As they left the room, you could hear their running footprints echoing down the long hallway. Not long later, a slight crash resounded, Louis let out a high-pitched girly scream, and all the boys erupted into loud laughter. You couldn't help the giggle that escaped your lips.

Not even 30 seconds later, Harry walked through the door again, closing it behind him. You stood up and walked towards him, a huge grin on your lips at the hilarious events that just happened and at how cute it was seeing Harry get embarrassed for the first time.

"'m sorry about them. They kinda ruined the moment, didn't they?" he chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.

"That's okay," you grinned as you walked up to him, wrapping your arms around each other.

"Kinda wanted t' get you alone to say it, but we haven't really been alone much."

"We're alone now."

"Guess that's true."

There were a couple seconds of silence, a bright red tint on his cheeks. You could tell how nervous he was. You swore you could hear how fast his heart was beating.

"Well," you teased, "are you gonna say it?"

He blushed even harder before chuckling nervously, "I love you."

You couldn't keep the grin off of your face, your cheeks burning with overuse. You leaned up on your tip-toes and pressed a sweet peck to his lips, "I love you too."

"Really?" he asked, his grin mimicking yours.

"Of course."

His hands cupped your cheeks as he leaned in again, pressing his soft lips to yours for another sweet kiss, this one longer and deeper. He pressed a few more kisses to your pink lips, butterflies swarming in both of your tummies.

"Did you think I wouldn't say it back?"

"I dunno," he shrugged.

"You overthink too much."
