May 10th 1850 Thomas Lipton, founder of the Lipton's grocery chain was born in Glasgow.

While his father worked in a succession of poorly paid jobs, Tommy Lipton’s siblings all died in infancy, leaving him as the family’s only son.

Tommy had to leave school aged 13, because his parents needed an extra income to make ends meet. He also attended night school at the Gorbals Youth School. In 1864, Thomas signed up as a cabin boy on a steamer running between Glasgow and Belfast and seems to have been taken with crew-members' stories about the United States, in 1865, Thomas used his savings to pay for a passage to New York, he spent the next five years there, travelling across the country. During this time he held many different jobs, including work at a tobacco plantation in Virginia; as an accountant at a rice plantation in South Carolina; as a door-to-door salesman in New Orleans; as a farmhand in New Jersey; and as a grocery assistant in New York.

Thomas returned to Glasgow in 1870. After spending some time helping his parents at their shop, he established one of his own, Lipton's Market, at 101 Stobcross Street in the Anderston area of the city. This proved highly successful and Lipton went on to establish a chain of shops, first in Glasgow and then across Scotland, before expanding to cover the whole of the UK over the next ten years. Meanwhile, the demand for tea was increasing among the middle classes and in 1888, by which time Lipton had 300 stores, he set out to bypass the traditional lines of supply for tea by investing directly in tea plantations. The Lipton Tea brand he established offered good quality for low prices and proved hugely popular, expanding the market for tea to all parts of society and establishing it as the national drink of choice.

Lipton was a big fan of promotional stunts. When his first 20,000 tea chests arrived in Glasgow he put on a party, complete with a brass band and bagpipe parade. In 1893 Sir Thomas Lipton officially established the Thomas J Lipton Company, a tea packaging company based in Hoboken, New Jersey . He felt that tea should be a drink for everyone, not just the wealthy , so he strived to make packaging and shipping less expensive.

Instead of arriving in crates, Sir Thomas packaged his loose tea in multiple weight options. The tea was also standardised, so Lipton customers knew exactly what to expect.

Lipton developed a passion for yachting, between 1899 and 1930 Lipton challenged the American holders of the America's Cup through the Royal Ulster Yacht Club five times with yachts he named Shamrock through Shamrock V. He never won the cup, but he was awarded a special trophy as "the best of all losers". This may sound double-edged, but one effect of his efforts to win the cup was to make his name well known across the United States, and his tea very popular there.

Although Lipton, through his yachting, became a friend of royalty, as a self-made man he still had difficulty breaking into some corners of the highly stratified British society of the day. He was, for example, only accepted as a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron shortly before his death.

As well as boats, Lipton will also be remembered for his love of football, and The Thomas Lipton Trophy, This was an association football competition that took place twice, in Turin, Italy, in 1909 and 1911. It is regarded by some as The First World Cup, or certainly a precursor to it, I'm sorry to have to tell you the winners in 2009 were from England, West Auckland Town Football Club from County Durham also defended and won the trophy in 1911.

Lipton died at his home in north London in 1931. He left most of his wealth to his native city of Glasgow. His yachting trophies are now on display at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Sir Thomas Lipton was buried alongside his parents and siblings in Glasgow's Southern Necropolis.

Liptons continues today as part of the multinational Unilever brands, they teas and other beverages still bear his name and are a world known brand, not bad for a young lad born in a Glasgow Tenement to Irish immigrants.

I take the brand new trainline to the airport.

The train is full of information, almost an overload.

On TV screens close to the door of each carriage departure times of planes are displayed.

Then it’s time for news headlines, sports news and world weather forecasts. 

The news tells me that Switzerland has leased a pier in the north east of North Korea; Seoul shares inch up on institutional gains.

The other stories deal with college tuition fees; military medical services; household debt; North Korean military intentions; and that South Korea is to develop an unmanned research ship.

The airport is big, but doesn’t feel overwhelming.

There is much thought given to the traveller and it’s almost a pleasure to be there.

I have no onward flight out of New Zealand, because I don’t need one.

The lady who is checking me in for China Southern Airlines tells me that I should have one.

She’s pretty nice about it. It’s an advisory, not a strict requirement on the part of New Zealand she tells me but I can’t check in without one.

A lady from Korean Air can sell me a refundable ticket for 1 million Won, about 680 Euro.

Instead I buy a flight online myself, from New Zealand to Australia for 100 Euro.

There are no newspapers on sale in the airport.

There isn’t even a bookshop, so I read the newspaper on the plane, the Global Times, a Chinese government sponsored newspaper. 

It’s full of wacky, weird and wonderful stories.

There’s a picture of Colonel Gadaffi playing chess with the Head of The World Chess Federation, who claims that chess is a gift from outer space, he also claims to have been abducted by aliens.

There’s news of a new high speed rail line to connect Beijing and Shanghai which goes at 300km/h, with tickets priced at 555 Yuan, or you can go business class for 1,750 Yuan.

There are also 250km/h trains that’ll cost you 410 and 650 Yuan depending on your class. 

They say there’ll be 63 pairs of trains running at 300km/h.

The article talks about the massive debts that the Ministry of Railways has incurred. A university professor is quoted talking about ‘air/rail intermodality projects’.

Another story deals with the 8,653km long natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to China which cost $22Bn, which is designed to 'feed China’s growth’.

Other stories include two Siberian tigers that are due to give birth in China; flooding in Hunan; the latest on Syria and Yemen; baby trafficking; bribery and corruption; financing of a 'shadow internet’ by the US. 

The business pages deal with Chinese GDP, money supply, the CPI, and IPO’s; the growth of luxury spending in China, the fact that Louis Vuitton opened 27 shops in 22 Chinese cities in two years. 

The United States is warned to stay out of any regional disputes that China may have with Vietnam and The Philippines.

I get the feeling that this story is only covered because they feel they have to, it’s all very low key.

When we land in Guangzhou there is powerful humidity in the air.

We’re so far from the airport that we have to board a small bus to bring us to the terminal.

All the likewise pasty foreigners who are just transiting through China are put aside and our passports taken away.

An official appears 20 minutes later with a stack of passports.

She tries to give passports back to people based on their passport pictures, it’s all a bit hopeless.

She doesn’t believe that I’m the same person as the person in the photo on my passport.

Eventually she gives me my passport. 

I have about 7 hours to wait until my connecting flight to Auckland.

On May 10th 1850 Thomas Lipton, founder of the Lipton’s grocery chain was born in Glasgow.

While his father worked in a succession of poorly paid jobs, Tommy Lipton’s siblings all died in infancy, leaving him as the family’s only son. Tommy had to leave school aged 13, because his parents needed an extra income to make ends meet. He also attended night school at the Gorbals Youth School. In 1864, Thomas signed up as a cabin boy on a steamer running between Glasgow and Belfast and seems to have been taken with crew-members’ stories about the United States, in 1865, Thomas used his savings to pay for a passage to New York, he spent the next five years there, travelling across the country. During this time he held many different jobs, including work at a tobacco plantation in Virginia; as an accountant at a rice plantation in South Carolina; as a door-to-door salesman in New Orleans; as a farmhand in New Jersey; and as a grocery assistant in New York.

The Lipton Tea brand he established offered good quality for low prices and proved hugely popular, expanding the market for tea to all parts of society and establishing it as the national drink of choice.

Lipton was a big fan of promotional stunts. When his first 20,000 tea chests arrived in Glasgow he put on a party, complete with a brass band and bagpipe parade. In 1893 Sir Thomas Lipton officially established the Thomas J Lipton Company, a tea packaging company based in Hoboken, New Jersey . He felt that tea should be a drink for everyone, not just the wealthy , so he strived to make packaging and shipping less expensive.

Instead of arriving in crates, Sir Thomas packaged his loose tea in multiple weight options. The tea was also standardised, so Lipton customers knew exactly what to expect.

Lipton developed a passion for yachting, between 1899 and 1930 Lipton challenged the American holders of the America’s Cup through the Royal Ulster Yacht Club five times with yachts he named Shamrock through Shamrock V. He never won the cup, but he was awarded a special trophy as “the best of all losers”. This may sound double-edged, but one effect of his efforts to win the cup was to make his name well known across the United States, and his tea very popular there.

Although Lipton, through his yachting, became a friend of royalty, as a self-made man he still had difficulty breaking into some corners of the highly stratified British society of the day. He was, for example, only accepted as a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron shortly before his death.

As well as boats, Lipton will also be remembered for his love of football, and The Thomas Lipton Trophy, This was an association football competition that took place twice, in Turin, Italy, in 1909 and 1911. It is regarded by some as The First World Cup, or certainly a precursor to it,  I’m sorry  to have to tell you the winners in 2009 were from England, West Auckland Town Football Club from County Durham also defended and won the trophy in 1911, the last pic is the trophy.

During the first world war Lipton  Respondied to a national call to action putting his yachts at the disposal of the Red Cross, the Scottish Women’s Hospitals Committee and the Serbian Relief Fund, for transporting medical volunteers, doctors, nurses and urgently needed medical supplies.

Lipton died at his home in north London in 1931. He left most of his wealth to his native city of Glasgow. His yachting trophies are now on display at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Sir Thomas Lipton was buried alongside his parents and siblings in Glasgow’s Southern Necropolis.

Liptons continues today as part of the multinational Unilever brands, they teas and other beverages still bear his name and are a world known brand, not bad for a young lad born in a Glasgow Tenement to Irish immigrants. 

Lipton never forgot where he came from and was famed for his philanthropy, today he is still remembered with The Sir Thomas Lipton Foundation a registered charity who “ care deeply about propelling 10 to 12 year old children – at school in areas of acute social and economic disadvantage - into their critical teenage years with an unforgettable experience of sailing, enterprise and achievement.”

Unmarried and without heirs, his fortune was distributed among friends, servants and to establish dedicated foundations, but the majority of his estate was left in trust to Glasgow, his beloved city of birth. By 1946, all funds had been distributed; the Lipton trust had bestowed £821,000 to various good causes.

272 --- The Property Crisis

I’ve been thinking about the gameplay mechanics of Realm of Order and in particular, borders and territory and how players will be able to claim them. There are some challenges with this and It’s not obvious who has the ‘right’ to build a new city at any given location.  The thing is, now I’m thinking about real-world property rights (which began after I spoke to a friend of mine who is saving up for a house) and I’m rather uneasy about the topic. In Auckland, the city I am living in at the moment, the median cost for property is more than a million dollars [1]. Ouch. That is a lot of money and in order to get a loan for this it is going to cost you a quarter of a million dollar deposit on average [2]. That’s quite some saving to do. Also I forgot to mention, almost 1 in every 10 properties in Auckland are unoccupied [3]. That must be close to 1 in every street! Well with so many unoccupied property in the City, perhaps there just isn’t a very high demand to live or work in Auckland, which I would be tempted to believe except for the fact that both the demand and price for land continues to ‘sky tower’ (as Aucklanders would say).  However, that’s not why I’m uneasy. I feel this way because of a much more sinister situation at play. 

The Property Crisis

Property is, at its core a term used to describe things you have the exclusive ownership right or control of. What I am realising, is that it is fundamentally wrong for any entity (except the crown) to have any kind of ownership right to, or control of, any territory that they are not actively occupying and/or otherwise using for residential or commercial use. This is due to the fact that land is fundamentally different from other forms of personal property. Vehicles, clothing, furniture and other goods can be transported and consumed where as it’s impossible to transport or consume land (because it’s defined as a fixed location). This means that at a fundamental level, renting out property to another party is in fact a violation of the renter’s property rights because if a renter has any kind of ownership or control of the property (such as moving in their personal belongings and restricting who may enter the property) than they must be recognised as the owner of that property. I’m honestly astonished that in the 21st century, the private property rights of millions of people are being breached and worst of all, the state, who are meant to be protecting private-property rights are actively enforcing the breach of these fundamental rights. I don’t think many people realise that this kind of large-scale natural-rights violation could be possible in modern society. Fortunately, there is no need for a civil war or revolution to fix it. There is a precidented method for resolving large-scale gross human-rights violations. In 1833, the UK introduced the Slavery Abolition Act that outlawed slavery and then in 1837 with the Slave Compensation Act ‘purchased’ the freedom of more than 800,000 slaves in order to protect their rights [4]. One thing to note here, is that none of the money went to the those who were freed, instead it was used to cover any losses to any entities incurred by the act. The loan the goverment made in order to cover these payments was not paid back until 2015. Therefore with this precident, a similar act could be introduced today in order to address the Property Crisis. The crown would draft an act to use a loan to purchase the land from any landlords who are not a rightful occupier of that land. The crown would then give the land to the active occupants of the land or if otherwise unoccupied, reserve it as ‘public’ or ‘protected’ land where the crown may sell it or give it to any rightfully occupying party at a later date. To be clear, this would not prevent anybody from selling/buying land but they must vacate/occupy the land within the reasonable timeframe enforced by the crown. Motels and Hotels can still operate as long as they are staffed by people hired by the business. Apartments and any other multi-tenant property would be co-owned by all of the occupants and they must establish their own organisational body exclusively owned and/or operated by its occupants. If land would become unoccupied for any reason for an unreasonable length, that land would be surrended back to the crown. People can still go on holiday and/or homeswap as long as they do not aquire the rightful occupation to a new property.

I believe there would be very positive economic ramifications for these changes. Capital would be freed up and flow into other areas of the economy creating a much wealthier society. Property supply will correspond to occupational demand and therefore land prices should be much more affordable. People who previously rented will have significant surplus cash to spend in the economy and/or save. I expect wages to likely go down by some extent and for industries that rely on the wrongful ownership of land to either adapt or go out of business. The goverment would also need a department to provision land that it reserves the rights to.

I really hope that others will come to understand and/or accept that the current property model for land actually violates private-property rights. If enough people do, the goverment will have the mandate to protect their rightful private-property.

Plan B4 you Party

Porter and Evan stayed for the week and worked out of the Auckland office so they could maximize their time up North. Al, Evan’s partner, joined us on Wednesday night. Our plan was to take Friday off, hike the Pinnacles, stay in the hut, and see the sunrise on Saturday morning from the top. On Thursday morning on my way to work, I got a text from the Department of Conservation stating that the weather was so nice that weekend, that they were closing the entire Coromandel Forest to perform aerial spray for pests. Plans: cancelled.

When we got to work we had to scramble to piece together last minute plans and find new accomodation for the weekend. I put in a request to for a dope Airbnb in Pauanui from Thurs-Sun and then had to leave for a site visit at the tallest residential building in Auckland. I spent most of the site visit in the stair core with very poor reception. I was lucky to have service when I got a message from the hosts asking why I was making such a last minute booking. I told them the Pinnacles sob story and they accepted my request! Things were looking up.

We got dinner in Ponsonby, grabbed some groceries at Countdown, and then hit the road. When we arrived in the Coromandel, Evan made us some quality G&Ts and then we played a few rounds of spicy uno before crashing.

In the morning we made brekkie and ate it out on the deck. We were all very impressed with the cute fish-themed dishware and fancy bread holder. Our first destination of the trip was Hot Water Beach, where mineral water that is deep in the ground is naturally heated and bubbles up through the sand. You can only experience these natural hot pools 2 hours before or after low tide.

We arrived towards the end of the window to see lots of abandoned pre-dug pools, so we were able to shop around before settling in. It was quite a weird experience and pretty hard to get comfortable as the pool water was generally too cold or boiling hot. We had to be careful not to burn ourselves! I’d still recommend going to witness the phenomenon, but if you want to comfortably relax in some warm water, go to an established hot pool or spa.

Next up was the famous Cathedral Cove. We drove up to the top to find that they had closed off all the parking, and we would need to park 10 minutes away and wait for a bus to shuttle us there. We didn’t have enough time for that, and Greg and I had already been to the Cove, so we dropped Evan, Al, and Porter off so they could experience it. In the meantime, Greg and I took a little walk through Te Pare Reserve where we got 360 degree views of Hahei beach. I was not dissaponted.

After scooping the gang from the Cove, we rushed to the SuperValue in Pauanui to get supplies for dinner. All I can say is that the store name is quite misleading; however, it did allow us to cook up a delicious Mexican spread. We had tortillas, creamy queso, guac, slaw, kumara, portobellos, chicken, and more. There was nothing else I could’ve wanted with that meal. We ended the night with a few rounds of Quiplash and a little Trivia Murder Party.

In the morning we had another nice brekkie out on the deck before heading out to Whangamata where we hired kayaks out the back of a small corner shop. The kayaks were half the price of all the other shops and the only catch is that you have drag them out to the estuary. From there we kayaked out to Whenuakura, or Donut Island, which is a wildlife sanctuary island just off the coast of Whangamata. It’s called donut island because it has a small cove you can kayak through to get to the center.

The center is composed of a small beach and a rocky coast. We explored for a while before heading back out on the water and seeing the other side of the island. On the route back we caught some waves with the yaks and had a great time doing it. Before we left Whangamata we had to take everyone to our favorite playground. Porter really enjoyed his time in the round swing.

We hit the grocery store on our way back to build up our supplies. Greg started a pasta sauce at the house before we wandered to the beach in Pauanui where we slung the frisbee and some of us took dips in the ocean. We made sure to snap a few pics during golden hour and capture our best plan b4 you party poses.

Once we built up a proper appetite, we walked back to the house and cooked the pasta to go with Greg’s veggie tomato sauce. It was another good night of quality home-cooked food. The meal was so good in-fact, that I got urged into betting that I could eat a whole 500 g bag of pasta. I stand by that bet. I’m sure there will be updates on this in the future.

After we cleaned up and had a few bevvies, we went back to the beach to watch the stars. This time we came prepared with blankets, sweaters, and a blow-up couch. We were able to see some galaxies, a few planets, and several shooting stars. It was so relaxing that a few of us fell asleep for a bit.

The next morning we made our last brekkie together composed of all the leftovers from the weekend before rushing out to the beach. I have always been a little afraid of waves so Al took me out and tried to coach me through dealing with them. This was the perfect learning beach as the waves weren’t too aggressive and you could walk deep into the ocean and still stand. Next, Greg taught me how to boogie board and I got to catch a few waves! It was awesome. I can’t wait to try it again.

Before we knew it we were headed to the airport to drop off our American pals. It would’ve been harder to say goodbye if we weren’t all meeting up in Wellington a few weeks later.

The gig in Auckland was livened up by the presence of my mate Geordie from Killing Joke, who got completely twatted and climbed the scaffolding at the side of our stage, hotly pursued by security, during our set. The band all watched this spectacle with glee, David turning to me and saying with mock - or perhaps it was real - resignation, "Your mate, I take it?" We had a big party after, the music being supplied by two amazing American buskers David had encountered on the street that afternoon. When he asked if they could do a gig that night they said sadly not, as they were going to see Pink Floyd. "That's okay," said David. "So are we!"

Lipton developed a passion for yachting, between 1899 and 1930 Lipton challenged the American holders of the America's Cup through the Royal Ulster Yacht Club five times with yachts he named Shamrock through Shamrock V. He never won the cup, but he was awarded a special trophy as "the best of all losers". This may sound double-edged, but one effect of his efforts to win the cup was to make his name well known across the United States, and his tea very popular there.

Although Lipton, through his yachting, became a friend of royalty, as a self-made man he still had difficulty breaking into some corners of the highly stratified British society of the day. He was, for example, only accepted as a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron shortly before his death.

As well as boats, Lipton will also be remembered for his love of football, and The Thomas Lipton Trophy, This was an association football competition that took place twice, in Turin, Italy, in 1909 and 1911. It is regarded by some as The First World Cup, or certainly a precursor to it,  I'm sorry  to have to tell you the winners in 2009 were from England, West Auckland Town Football Club from County Durham also defended and won the trophy in 1911.

Lipton died at his home in north London in 1931. He left most of his wealth to his native city of Glasgow. His yachting trophies are now on display at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Sir Thomas Lipton was buried alongside his parents and siblings in Glasgow's Southern Necropolis.

Liptons continues today as part of the multinational Unilever brands, they teas and other beverages still bear his name and are a world known brand, not bad for a young lad born in a Glasgow Tenement to Irish immigrants.
