Today, on our second day in Greece we had the opportunity to play beach volleyball with an Olympian and a student at the Olympic Academy, visit the Olympic Museum, and shop/eat in the Golden Hall. The Golden Hall is a shopping mall here in Athens that is connected to the Olympic Museum. Walking through the mall I could already notice many differences from malls in the United States. The mall here in Athens was much cleaner, less crowded, and had a more upscale look to it. The mall also had many sit down restaurants that looked very nice and would seem to be to fancy for a mall in America. We had the opportunity to have lunch at one of the restaurants called La Pasteria. The food was delicious and very affordable. We also had the opportunity to walk around and shop. Something I noticed was that stores that we have in America were much cheaper here in Athens. For example, the clothing store Zara had much lower prices here compared to a Zara in America. I found this interesting because the mall as a whole seemed very upscale compared to other malls I’ve been to, so I wasn’t expecting it to be so affordable. I also noticed that all of the employees in the restaurants and clothing stores spoke English. In most stores in the U.S. it’s not common for employees to speak a second language. Overall it was so cool to see how a shopping mall is in Athens compared to one in America and we had such a fun day!

Spectember Day Nine: Coevolution

This Early Cretaceous duo are often found together in bone beds and show evidence of dinosaur intelligence and domestication within archosauria.

Baroplosaurus:

This domesticated stegosaur is a close relative to craterosaurus. They live in herds up to thirty individuals and grave on soft plants like ferns and cycads. Their prominent tail spikes and male aggression has been mostly selectively bred out.

Pasteria:

A large allosauroid, these intelligent Dinosaurs live in family groups up to fifteen individuals with a notable hierarchy with the oldest males having breeding rights and younger males protecting the herds. They spend most of their time watching their herd and using their bright blue belly to startle larger predators and chase of smaller ones. They will selectively kill certain individuals if they are males or are too old to reproduce. They make sure there is a constant food supply with new Baroplosaurs being hatched.

Bereits zum siebten Mal analysierte PETA das vegane Angebot zahlreicher Mensen und stellte fest, dass die vegan-freundlichsten in Berlin und Bochum zu finden sind! 👍😎🌱

PETA zur Untersuchung: "Studierende in Deutschland werden in 58 bundesweiten Studierendenwerken mit gastronomischen Angeboten versorgt. Die Auswahl an veganen Gerichten in den Mensen und Cafeterien dieser Einrichtungen wächst von Jahr zu Jahr, denn immer mehr junge Menschen integrieren die pflanzliche Ernährung als festen Bestandteil in ihren Speiseplan.

Insgesamt nahmen 41 Studierendenwerke am Rennen um den Titel der vegan-freundlichsten Mensa 2023 teil. Die Beurteilungskriterien konzentrierten sich vorwiegend auf das tägliche Angebot an veganen Gerichten, auf die spezielle Schulung des Personals hinsichtlich der Zubereitung von veganen Speisen, das Angebot an Pflanzendrinks für Kaffeespezialitäten und Aktionen zum Thema vegan. Aber auch das Gesamtkonzept der jeweiligen Mensa und ihre Entwicklung im Laufe der Jahre spielte eine Rolle.

Da das gastronomische Angebote der verschiedenen Mensen eines Studierendenwerks meist variiert, wurde beim PETA-Ranking nicht das gesamte Studierendenwerk, sondern nur eine Mensa des jeweiligen Studierendenwerks ausgezeichnet – nämlich die vegan-freundlichste.

Um eine 5-Sterne-Bewertung zu erhalten, war es ausschlaggebend, dass die Auswahlkriterien auf höchstem Niveau erfüllt werden. Natürlich muss die jeweilige Mensa auch komplett vegan sein, also keine Produkte tierischen Ursprungs verkaufen.

Zwei Mensen haben die erforderlichen Kriterien in vollem Umfang erfüllt und erhalten daher beide den begehrten Titel „Vegan-freundlichste Mensa 2023“: 1.: „Mensa Pasteria TU Veggie 2.0 – die vegane Mensa“, Berlin. 2.: Vegane Mensa „Rote Bete“ des Akademischen Förderungswerks Bochum."
