Okay i just finished the Villain Arc and
I know Lear has gone character development i know, but he should have been at least a little more angrier at Paulo.
Like i really would have thought it would go like Lear being upset at Paulo for a bit and then just forgive him like;
Tumblr media
He TOOK Hoopa from him, not even without permission and forced Hoopa to go in a Rampage on his whole island! I know he sees his old self in Paulo but like, he should at least resent Paulo a little, pls be angry for a little while it would satisfy my starvation and brainrot about your character Lear.
Yes he is thankful to Paulo for returning Hoopa back BUT it should have been followed with a tiny little bit of anger like him shouting; "how dare you!?" BECAUSE PAULO JUST STOLE A POKEMON FROM A LITERAL ROYAL, and Lear's closest friend!

While I am here, Paulo is such a good villain in concept? Like there is something about a child wanting to be a hero so bad that he chases after the heros, but instead of listening to them, he ends up absorbing the morals of the villains? But he believes that he's better because his version of it is to go against those villains, so he isn't like them. Before finally, he embraces it and decides that not only will he defeat the other villains, he will be the worst one so that no other can rise up?
Like in concpet Paulo is SUCH a good final villain.

“You think you’re that strong?” Lear laughed condescendingly, fury driving him back to old habits. He looked at the pair through rose-colored glasses, furious at Paulo’s lack of reaction. He needed the kid to understand how much this betrayal hurt; how much Paulo had hurt him. He wanted to force the kid to face him. To face his victim.
The prince ripped his shades off his face, revealing the tears clouding his vision. He folded them closed and put them in his pocket. The world felt too bright and too real and too cruel, but he had to bear it. Lear had to make Paulo see the reality of what he’d done.
“I think Hoopa’s that strong,” Paulo responded coldly. His gray eyes were wide as he stared at the mixture of fury and grief on display; a victory for Lear. The prince took another step forward, slowly growing closer to the kid. Paulo began to panic in earnest now, eyes widening. His voice gained a sharp, defensive edge. “That’s why you’re so protective of it, isn’t it? ‘Cause you wanted to make sure no one else could ever beat you. ‘Cause you… you wanted to be better than me!”
“I am better than you.”
Lear blinked. Tears ran down his cheeks in fat, ugly blobs. Paulo stared up at him in fear and guilt. “Is that what you want to hear? That we’ve all secretly looked down on you for losing every fight you’ve ever been in? For not defeating Team Break on your own? For not being able to save Tina? For not being able to save yourself?”
Lear walked until there were only a few feet between him and Paulo. He felt numb as he stared at the child in front of him. The inferno of his anger burned a bright, overwhelming red in his heart. The prince’s sync stone shone just as bright.
“Do you want me to tell you I hate you?” The prince tilted his head to emphasize the question, to draw attention to the tears falling down his face. He hoped Paulo wouldn’t call it out, because then he’d have to tell him yes, your kidnapping of my best friend has made me so upset I can’t stop crying, thank you for asking.

Oof so now that the final part of the Villain arc is over...I felt like they could've done better Like there were a lot of problems with the arc to be sure but the thing that stuck out to me with the finale was how Paulo got talked out of his depression...or rather by who It was one thing to have Tina there because that is his long time best friend...but the fact that Oak was the one who talked to Paulo and not Blue or Cheren kind of rubbed me the wrong way. This isn't a dig at the idea of Oak not having wise words of wisdom but it felt off that the interludes and even the Kanto Villain arc were playing up the idea that Blue was going to help get Paulo to his senses and that Cheren would help. Part of the perks of seeing Lear turn around in the original PML was seeing someone who was more of a peer talk some sense over just some random adult telling Lear to cut it out And I thought they would do the same for Paulo letting his peers talk to him but then the bait and switch with Oak and it felt like it cheated Blue out of I would've even been okay with Oak doing that for Paulo had he been a bit more involved with the story to begin with. Seeing Oak take cues from his anime counterpart and be more involved with mentoring would've been fine. But not him coming at the last minute and taking the chance his grandson and another young gym leader to be able to impart wisdom on someone who was struggling.
