Paragliding is a recreational and competitive adventure sport. It allows one to enjoy the most beautiful landscapes in bird’s view. Whenever we see someone up the sky paragliding, we ask ourselves how the humans get up there. Paragliding is like flying like a bird, feeling to be born with wings. Most of the paragliding sites in India provide both solo and tandem paragliding.As the name suggests, solo paragliding is for those who are professional and go solo for the flight. It requires training whereas tandem paragliding is mainly for tourists and an instructor will accompany you throughout the flight. Here is the list of best paragliding destinations in India.

Bir Billing

Green meadows, snow capped mountains as well as favourable wind and weather conditions makes it the second best destination in the world for paragliding after Lake Como, Italy. Bir Billing, visited by a number of foreign and adventure seekers is a must go for anyone who visits the Kangra valley in Himachal.

Bir and Billing are 2 different places located 14 km away from each other. Bir is the landing point located at an elevation of 5000ft and billing is the take off point at a height of 8500ft. The journey from Bir to Billing can be done by car or through an easy trek of 4-5hrs. Billing provides the tourists with an option of camping and both solo as well as tandem paragliding are performed here. The paragliding flight lasts for 25-30 min and one enjoys the Dhauladar range, tea gardens and Tibetan settlements as they go down.

Panchgani

The beautiful scenic valley, panoramic 360 view and gentle breezes, makes Panchgani one of the perfect and most romantic destinations in Maharashtra. The clear sky and open green plains makes the paragliding experience much better.

It is located at a height of 4500ft and is 19 km away from Mahabaleshwar in the Sahydri mountain ranges. The best locations for paragliding in Panchgani are Khinger, Bhilar and Tapola. It generally takes 15-30 min for a flight to conclude and offers both solo as well as tandem paragliding. The major activities to do over there other than paragliding are Caving and Rock climbing. One can also visit the Krishna River and the Pratapgad fort, built by Maratha chief Shivaji that can be reached within 1hr from Panchgani.

Manali

One of the most visited hill station in India, Manali gives a tourist the most amazing experience of their life. There are a lot of spots in and around Manali, which offers paragliding.

Solang valley, 13 km from Manali has a no. of individual operators who take you up the hill through a cable car ropeway. Solang offers tandem paragliding and has 2 types of flights – short flight and high flight. The short one lasts for 60-90 seconds and is not recommended. One should try the longer flight as it gives the real thrill of paragliding and has duration of 15-20 min. On your way to Rohtang, other paragliding spots can also be spotted like Fatru, Kothi and Bijli Mahadev. These are generally for experienced gliders and have longer flight duration of 20-30 min. Both solo and tandem paragliding are performed on these spots. The scenery around the region is ideal for flying high with the company of mighty Himalayas and admiring the River Beas with its exceptional surroundings.

Yelagiri

This is easily the top flying destination of south India because of its easy slopes and wider landing grounds. Groups of youth from both Chennai and Bangalore come to Yelagiri for a road trip terming it as outstanding.

Yelagiri is located in Tamil Nadu and has an elevation of 2200ft. The rose gardens, orchards and green valleys make the paragliding experience one of the best for both beginners as well as the professionals. One can opt for various adventure activities in Yelagiri like rock climbing and trekking. One can eventually trek all the way to the take off point in Yelagiri from Mangalam village, situated at the base of the hill.The flight duration over here is 20 min long and a trekking trip to Swamimalai hills is a must do thing for adventure lovers.

Kamshet

Paragliding in Kamshet is one of the most divine and wonderful experiences one can ever have. Situated just 16 km away from the twin city of Lonavala and Khandala the aerial views of Kamshet are just amazing.

There are 3 kinds of paragliding services provided here – Classic, Instructional and Acro. It is located at an elevation of 2200ft and the duration of the flights are 5-10 min, 15-20 min and 25-30 min long. One has to trek till the top of Sheler hills and the base camp is located near Pavna Lake. The paragliding generally takes place between early mornings to late afternoons thus giving an excellent view of Sahyadri ranges and its valleys. The other attractions to witness here are the Buddhist cave temples and the artificial lake known as the Vadivale Lake.

Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills is one of the unique places in Karnataka which offers paragliding activity. It has one of the most spectacular views of sunrise and sunset in the country with a beautiful set of clouds around it.

Nandi Hills is situated at an elevation of 4849ft above sea level and attracts a lot of adventure enthusiasts, especially those interested in light aviation. Located at the edge of Bangalore, it offers tandem paragliding activity for all adventure seekers. Other activities done over here are cycling and trekking till the top. The gates of Nandi hills opens at 6 in the morning, and while flying it has a flat land all around the hills for landing. Tipu’s drop is a major attraction on the Nandi Hills and it dates back to the time when prisoners of Tipu Sultan were thrown down the cliff.
