Farmer leaders observe fast, stir regains momentum as Tikait succeeds in mobilising support from western UP

GHAZIABAD/NEW DELHI: Agitating farmer leaders held a day-long fast at various protest sites on Delhi’s borders on Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary on Saturday as the stir against the agriculture laws appeared to regain momentum after rallying support from the agricultural community of the crucial western Uttar Pradesh region. More farmers gathered at Ghazipur, on the Delhi-Meerut highway, that has now become the new focal point of the stir. Union leaders claimed that protesters were also heading back to Singhu and Tikri borders from Punjab and Haryana, days after the crowds had waned following the violence at the tractor rally on January 26. The administration remained on high alert with internet services temporarily suspended at the Singhu, Ghazipur, and Tikri borders of the national capital, as well as the adjoining areas. Haryana has already suspended internet services in 14 districts. Security personnel, including from anti-riot police and paramilitary forces, were deployed in strength. Multiple layers of barricades including concrete blocks were being put at the protest sites. Wearing garlands, the farmer leaders, who had called for observing ‘Sadbhavana Diwas’ (Harmony Day) on Saturday after the immense outrage over violence by protesters during their Republic Day tractor rally, sat on the dais during the fast, as crowds of supporters swelled, especially in Ghazipur where the Bharatiya Kisan Union is leading the protest.

Pankaj Pradhan, 52, head of Charaura village in Bulandshahr, who arrived in the afternoon along with seven other people to Ghazipur border protest site, became emotional, recalling the night of January 28. “We were all awake, watching Tikait ji crying, some were glued to TV sets, others on mobile phones, and we all felt restless. I was moved to tests too, and women too got emotional. But, his tears touched a chord with everyone, and made them connect stronger to the movement,” he said. Farmers also came from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and other parts of Uttar Pradesh, many of whom addressed the crowd at the protest site. Till now, the agitation was seen as mainly being led by Punjab-based farmer unions. A multitude of green-and-white caps, symbolic of the unions spearheading the battle, union flags and the tricolour, planted on tractors, dotted the highway. On various tractors and camps, photos of legendary farmer leaders such as Chaudhary Charan Singh and Mahendra Singh Tikait have been put up. Khatana, who is at the demonstration site with Tikait, said there has been continuous support for the “peaceful protest” against the farmers’ demand for removal of the new agri laws.

Abhimanyu Kohar, a senior member of Samkyukt Kisan Morcha which is an umbrella body of farmer unions, said the ongoing agitation will gain strength as farmers in large numbers will join them in the coming days. Anil Chaudhary, who came from Bulandshahr too, rued what happened at Red Fort and in the streets of Delhi on January 26, and said, “it did hurt our morale”. “But, we feel stronger now, and Tikaitji’s tears brought me here. Every person in my village is touched by his emotional appeal. And, our solidarity will only grow from here, even though they may stack up odds against us,” he said. Farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal said in Chandigarh that he expects a record gathering by February 2 at the border points of Delhi. “People in large numbers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand are reaching the protest sites,” Rajewal claimed. The president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) also condemned the violence in Delhi on the Republic Day and said it was unfortunate. “Possibly by February 2, there will again be a record gathering of people at the protest sites,” he said, adding that the agitation would remain peaceful. Rajewal also criticised the Haryana government for suspending internet services. He accused the Centre of instilling a sense of fear among people by showing pictures of the “unfortunate incidents”, apparently referring to the January 26 violence in the national capital. Rajewal appealed to those joining the agitation at Delhi’s borders to keep the protest peaceful. “It is our responsibility to keep the agitation peaceful,” he stressed. The farmer leader appealed to the Centre to shun its “stubborn attitude” and withdraw the three farm laws. Asked about the next meeting between the protesting farmers and the government, he said, “When they call us, we will certainly go”. To a question on joining the investigation following notices issued by the Delhi Police to farmer leaders in connection with the Republic Day violence, Rajewal said, “We will send them a reply.”

The Delhi Traffic Police said movement on the National Highway 24 (Delhi-Meerut Expressway) has been stopped. Apart from the three borders of Delhi, internet services will remain suspended in their adjoining areas too effective from 11 pm of January 29 to 11 pm of January 31, a Union Home Ministry official said. The decision has been taken to “maintain public safety and averting public emergency” under Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules 2017, the official said. Thousands of farmers have been protesting at Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, demanding a rollback of the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. The protesting farmers have expressed apprehension that these laws would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price (MSP) system, leaving them at the “mercy” of big corporations. Delhi rape convict on hunger strike, says lawyer; decision on death warrant soon - india news

A Delhi court hearing a petition filed by the parents of 2012 Delhi gangrape victims seeking death warrant for the four convicts reserved its order. The judge is in his chamber, and will be dictating the order soon.At the hearing today, Tihar Jail’s law officer handed over a status report to the court.Special Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan apprised the court about the current status of the case and also stated that three out of four convicts have already exhausted their legal remedies.And as of date, there is no petition pending in any court, Mohan said, arguing that death warrant can be issued. He also mentioned that Delhi High Court had given seven-day time to the convicts and that period is over.Meanwhile, Mukesh Kumar Singh, one of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, told the court on Monday that he does not want to be represented by advocate Vrinda Grover. Mukesh’s mother, who was also present in the court, started crying and pleaded that his son’s death sentence should be commuted to life sentence.Additional Session Judge Dharmender Rana was also informed by AP Singh, the lawyer of the convicts, that one of them, Vinay Sharma, is on hunger strike in Tihar jail since February 11.At the last hearing on Thursday, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana had pointed to the rights of the convicts under Article 21 of the Constitution for posting the matter for further hearing on Monday.The judge had also appointed an advocate to represent Pawan Gupta, one of the four death row convicts in the case, after he refused to take a lawyer offered by the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DLSA) as legal aid.The parents of the 2012 Delhi gangrape case victim, through their lawyer, had told the court during the hearing on Thursday that patience of the society is being tested by this case.The parents of the victim moved the Delhi court for issuance of fresh death warrant after the seven-day period given by the Delhi high court expired on February 12.The date of execution for the four convicts - Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar (31) - was first fixed for January 22 in Tihar jail, was later postponed for 6 am on February 1 by a January 17 court order.The physiotherapy intern was gang-raped and savagely assaulted on the night of December 16, 2012, in a moving bus in South Delhi. She died of her injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital.Six people - the four convicts, Ram Singh and a juvenile - were named as accused.The trial of the five adult men began in a special fast-track court in March 2013.Ram Singh, the prime accused, committed suicide by hanging himself in Tihar jail days after the trial began. The juvenile, who was said to be the most brutal of the attackers, was put in a correctional home for three years.He was released in 2015 and sent to an undisclosed location amid concerns over a threat to his life. Earlier on Friday, Congress and NSUI had held protests across the country against the Centre's decision to conduct JEE and NEET examinations in September. The protests against the decision were held across different states and Union Territories of the country including Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha and Gujarat. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal on Thursday said that the safety and future of the students was the topmost priority with regard to the conduction of the JEE and NEET amid the Covid-19 pandemic. According to prison officials, the incident took place in jail number 3 on Sunday afternoon and he got some minor injuries and was treated inside the prison premises. According to prison officials, Vinay had briefly stopped eating. ldquo;He is irritable in nature and acts different from the other three convicts. His nature is different from the other three,rdquo; they said. ldquo;Sharma got hurt inside his cell after he banged his head against a wall on Sunday afternoon. While he was at it, security personnel saw him, stopped him immediately, and called the doctors,rdquo; a senior jail official said. A Delhi court, on Monday, ordered that Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26), and Akshay Kumar (31), the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, be hanged at 6.00 am on March 3. The court was informed that Vinay was on hunger strike in Tihar jail but he later broke the strike. It directed the jail superintendent to take appropriate care of Vinay as per law. Vinayrsquo;s lawyer had told the court that the convict was assaulted in jail and has head injuries, adding that he was suffering from acute mental illness and hence the death sentence cannot be carried out. The court rejected the ground of ldquo;mental illness,rdquo; saying that the issue was raised before the apex court and it rejected the plea on the basis of the report submitted by doctors, who said the convict was ldquo;psychologically well adjustedrdquo; and the ldquo;general condition of the petitioner is stable.rdquo; According to sources, with the date of execution approaching, the mental health of the four convicts is being regularly checked by doctors. They all are being kept in jail number 3 in separate cells and they are being monitored round the clock, the senior jail official said.
