Help for a world drowning in microplastics
Look around you. How many plastic items do you see? If you are like most people, there are probably a lot.
Research shows that people recycle only nine percent of plastic wastes. The rest — water bottles, pens, shopping bags — can end up in our water, air and soil. Exposed to light and waves, plastic breaks down into teeny-tiny bits. Known as microplastics, they have become a growing concern. That’s partly because when they end up in the environment, they also can end up in animals, our food and our drinking water.
The most recent estimate suggests that Americans alone eat or drink some 70,000 of these polluting microplastic bits each year.
Discarded plastic is not the only source of them. Some bits are made on purpose, for use in skin-care products and toothpaste. They’re used to scrub away dead skin and cavity-causing material on teeth. When we shower or rinse our mouths, those microplastics go down the drain. From there, they end up in our waterways.
Researchers have even shown that washing clothes made of fleece and other types of plastic sheds bits of lint. Those fibers also go down the drains and into the water.
Scientists began reporting microplastics in the ocean as far back as the 1970s. Since then, several hundred studies have shown that microplastics taint the environment. This includes the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers.
But research is underway to slow the growth of this pollution — and perhaps clean up some of what’s already out there.
The problem with plastics
Our drinking water comes from lakes, rivers and groundwater aquifers. Any of these may be tainted with microplastics. Our bodies will pee out plastics we’ve ingested, but no one knows how long it takes for them to move through the body, says Sam Athey. She studies sources of microplastics at the University of Toronto in Canada. The longer microplastics stay in our bodies, she says, the greater our exposure to them.
Scientists Say: Microplastic
Researchers don’t yet know the risks, says Athey. But she finds reasons to be cautious. One is that plastic is made from oil and includes many different petroleum-based ingredients. Scientists don’t yet know how many of these might be toxic.
Ingredients in some plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride, can cause cancer. And phthalates (THAAL-aytes) — used to soften some types of plastics — can mimic the activity of hormones. These false hormones can cause unexpected changes in how cells grow and develop. Such changes may lead to disease.
Plastic also can soak up pollution like a sponge. The pesticide DDT and PCBs (a type of insulating fluid) are two types of toxic pollution found in plastics floating in the ocean.
Plastic bits also have been turning up in fish, birds, corals and other aquatic animals. That’s a problem because plastic does not provide the energy and nutrients these creatures need to grow and thrive.
The case for saying no to plastic
The simple solution is to not buy plastic items, says Peter Kershaw. He is an independent marine scientist who lives in Norwich, England. He wrote a 2018 report for the United Nations on alternatives that could help reduce plastic litter in the ocean.
“Ask yourself,” he says: “Do I really need that plastic bag to carry my shopping home?” Or do you really need a plastic straw to drink your soda or milk?
Tumblr media
Straws make up a lot of the plastic trash found washed up on ocean coasts and lakeshores. One way to cut down on your plastic use is to avoid straws (if you are able to drink without one).Chemist 4 U/Flickr (CC BY 2.0)
The leaders of some countries also have been asking that question. They’ve decided the answer is “no” and have banned single-use plastic items. These are things, such as packaging, that we use once and then throw away.
Bangladesh, Kenya and New Zealand are three countries that have banned plastic bags. Some U.S. cities and a few states also have banned them. Representing 28 countries, the European Parliament has agreed to ban nearly a dozen single-use plastics by 2021. Europe’s ban includes single-use cutlery, plates, straws and drink stirrers. Canada announced a plan to ban these, too, by 2021.
Such bans are a good start. But scientists say people must do more.
The promise and peril of biodegradable materials
One strategy is to find alternatives to conventional plastics. Some companies are starting to replace single-use plastic items with biodegradable alternatives. These new products are designed to break down into harmless chemicals.
Materials decay when microbes feed on them, breaking big molecules into smaller, simpler ones (such as carbon dioxide and water). Other living things can then feed on these breakdown products to grow.
Tumblr media
This environmental activist calls himself the Bag Monster. He posed for the camera at the Oceans Conference in New York City in June 2017. His suit illustrates how many plastic bags an individual shopper might use in a year.Peter Kershaw
Traditional plastic takes a very long time to decay. That’s because it’s made from petroleum, and few microbes choose to eat that. Biodegradable plastic, in contrast, is made from biological materials on which many microbes happily dine. These range from trees, sugarcane and corn stalks to shrimp shells.
But there is a problem with such materials, says Kershaw. They decay only at very high temperatures — typically 50º Celsius (122º Fahrenheit). Plus, those high temperatures must be maintained for several weeks for microbes to do their job.
Some cities have industrial compost systems that meet those conditions. But many do not. Instead, biodegradable plastic items can end up in a cold ocean or lake where they can take decades or even centuries to break down, depending on the type of plastic.
Sunlight can speed their breakdown. But scientists recently showed some biodegradable plastic bags were still strong and intact after three years outdoors. In that regard, they were not much better than regular plastic.
The other problem with biodegradable plastics is that people often toss them into the recycling bin with regular plastic.
“Once you mix them together — and they look the same, so people do it — it makes it harder to recycle the plastic,” says Kershaw.
Filtering microplastics from the laundry
Tumblr media
Researchers at the University of Toronto are testing this washing machine filter in 100 homes. It is designed to capture microplastic lint from clothing. The researchers want to see how much microplastic pollution it could keep out of local waters.Courtesy of Wexco
Cleaning clothes has become an enormous source of waterborne plastic. Washing machines tumble and wear down fabrics. This releases lots of little pieces of lint. If the fabric was made from nylon, polyester, polyethylene or polyamide, for instance, those lint particles will be plastic.
One 2018 study found that polyester fleece was a big culprit. A study that came out two years earlier showed that washing a single 6 kilogram (13 pound) load of clothes made from synthetic fabrics could release some 700,000 plastic lint fibers into the wash water. That explains why some researchers are looking for ways to keep that lint from going down the drain.
One project has been testing special filters to catch those fibers. It’s being run by researchers at the University of Toronto and at Georgian Bay Forever (a local environmental group). This past July, they installed the test filters on washing machines in 100 households in Parry Sound, Ontario. Parry Sound is on the shores of Canada’s Georgian Bay. It is part of Lake Huron.
The local water-treatment plants aren’t designed to remove microplastics. So any lint microplastics from the town’s wash will end up in the bay. The test filters are about twice the size of a standard water bottle. In recent tests, they removed roughly 90 percent of microfibers, notes project leader Lisa Erdle. She works at the University of Toronto.
Tumblr media
This is how much microplastic lint one family in Canada produced during a month’s worth of laundry. An experimental filter on their washing machine removed the plastic lint before it could drain into nearby Georgian Bay.Georgian Bay Forever
“Testing in our lab shows they [the filters] work in a controlled setting,” she notes. “We’re curious to see if they work [just as well] in real people’s homes.” Whether they do may depend on whether people use the filters properly. For instance, she notes, “How often do they change the filter?”
Erdle and her team tested the wash water before the filters were installed. They are now repeating those tests to see how well the filters reduced the release of plastic lint.
The study will run for two years. Its results will be shared with the public. Because Parry Sound has a population of just 6,400, Erdle suspects the decrease in microplastic fibers will be noticeable.
The ideal solution would be to not manufacture plastic-based clothing in the first place, says Erdle. But filtering lint out of wash water and then burying it in a landfill would at least keep the pollution out of our waters.
Can nanotechnology bring mega benefits?
What about the microplastic pollution already polluting rivers, lakes and the ocean? In July 2019, researchers in Australia reported a potential solution for breaking microplastics into smaller, harmless molecules.
They created nanometer-scale coil-shaped tubes. Made from carbon, these tubes are too small to see (even with a classroom microscope). But they may produce a very visible change in water pollution by breaking down microplastics.
Here’s how they work: The carbon nanotubes are coated in nitrogen. When mixed with a compound known as POMS (short for peroxymonosulfate [Per-OX-ee-mon-oh-SUL-fate]), the nanotubes create new chemicals. Known as reactive oxygen species, or ROS, these new chemicals crumble microplastics into smaller components.
Tumblr media
This tiny carbon nanotube (twisted into a coil to make it more rugged) was imaged by a scanning electron microscope. When mixed in water with a compound called peroxymonosulfate, such nanotubes produce chemicals that break down microplastics. J. Kang et al/Matter 2019
Chemical engineer Jian Kang led the research. He works at Curtin University in Perth. His team added their carbon nanotubes to 80 milliliters (one-third cup) of water tainted with microplastic particles. Then they warmed the water to 120 °C (248 °F) for eight hours. Heating the water speeds the process. Manganese embedded within each nanotube made the tubes magnetic. This meant the researchers could use magnets to pull them out of the water for reuse.
The treatment reduced the amount of microplastics in the water by about a third to one-half, Kang’s group showed. It reported the findings on July 31, 2019 in the journal Matter.
Chemicals produced by the plastic’s breakdown don’t appear very toxic, notes Long Chen. He is an environmental engineer at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. Chen was not involved in the work. The Australian researchers exposed green algae to water containing the microplastic by-products. After two weeks, they saw no change in the algae’s growth.
Clearly, more research is needed. But the early testing does appear promising.
“It’s great to have this option as a tool in a toolbox” to curb microplastic pollution, says Bart Koelmans. He is an environmental scientist at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
However, researchers caution there still is a lot of work to do. What’s more, Koelmans says, such new programs to clean up plastics “should not dismiss us from thinking about what the real problem is — and that’s the [release] of plastic into places where it does not belong.”

ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 2070 MINI Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 2070 Mini is in contrast to other RTX 2070 cards on the market. By, in contrast, I'm talking about the physical size of the card. The Mini moniker at the end of the product name denotes a smaller, more compact version. Over the last few generations of Nvidia cards, Zotac has produced the Mini models. I got my first peek at a Zotac GeForce GTX 1080TI Mini a few years ago at CES and then went hands-on with their mini version of the GTX 1080 here a while back. The Zotac mini cards are designed to fit into most systems produced or built today. With a smaller footprint, they make for some small and powerful systems. But, does the smaller size of the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 2070 Mini hinder the card?     Specifications of the Zotac GeForce RTX 2070 Mini GPU GeForce RTX 2070 CUDA cores 2304 Video Memory 8GB GDDR6 Memory Bus 256-bit Engine Clock Boost: 1620 MHz Memory Clock 14.0 Gbps PCI Express 3.0 Display Outputs 3 x DisplayPort (4096x2160@60Hz) HDMI 2.0 (3840x2160@60Hz) DVI-D HDCP Support Yes Multi-Display Capability Quad Display Recommended Power Supply 550W Power Consumption 175W Power Input 8-pin DirectX 12 API feature level 12_1 OpenGL 4.5 Cooling 90mm fan, 100mm fan Slot Size Dual Slot SLI No Supported OS Windows 10 / 7 x64 Card Length 211mm x 129mm x 41mm (8.3in x 5.08in x 1.61in) Accessories User Manual   Packaging Zotac doesn't deviate too far from their established box art with the RTX 2070 mini. On the front of the box, there is geometric graphics along with the product name. Flipping the box over and taking a look at the backside will give you a lot more information on the GPU housed inside as the back side of the box.   Once you open up the box, you'll find the GPU wrapped in an anti-static bag and sitting in a closed cell insert.
Tumblr media
The Zotac GeForce RTX 2070 mini is, well, just that: mini. It's small size measures in at 211mm (8.3 in) long, 129mm (5.08 in)wide, and 41mm (1.61 in) tall. Even at this smaller size, Zotac was able to fit a 90mm and a 100mm fan to help keep the card cool. On the back, the backplate actually wraps around the back edge of the card. During testing, the back plate did get a bit warm and aids in the cooling of the components. There are two different size fans on the Zotac RTX 2070 Mini and each size fan has unique fan blades, the front fan which is 90mm has fan blades that have a sharper angle to them. This allows the fan to have a higher static pressure. This fan is positioned over key components. The 100mm fan has flatter blades. This is done to maximize the airflow over the area and move as much air as possible. Under the fan shroud, you can get a peek at a couple of the 6mm heat pipes that run through the heatsink. All total there are five heat pipes. The fans, heatsink, and the backplate are all part of Zotac's IceStorm 2.0 cooling solution.
Tumblr media
On the case side of the card, a LED-lit Zotac Gaming logo is present in the center. When in use, this logo lights up in white and cannot be changed. You can also see the edges of the backplate are bend and shaped to meet up with the fan shroud. A single 8-pin PCIe power connector is required to power the GPU.
Tumblr media
At the rear of the card, the back plate again wraps around the PCB and meets the edge of the fan shroud. This is designed to add functionality in the form of protection for the fins on the heatsink and hide the heatsink.  Because of the back plate, there are no exposed heatsink fins on the Zotac RTX 2070 mini.
Tumblr media
While the card is small in terms of length and width, the Zotac RTX 2070 mini is still a double slot card. The I/O is a bit different than other RTX cards we've reviewed. Most do not include a DVI port which Zotac does have. The Zotac RTX 2070 also lacks the VirtualLink connector. The GPU's I/O includes 1x DVI, 1x HDMI, and 3x DisplayPort connectors.
Tumblr media
Included with the Zotac GeForce RTX 2070 mini is Zotac's overclocking and monitoring software called FireStorm.  The software is pretty simple and all the controls are laid out well. Starting at the left side, you'll see three labels, Auto, Manual, and Advanced. These are used to adjust the fan speeds. Under that, you'll see the OC Scanner. To the right, you'll see the adjustments for GPU clock speed, memory clock speeds, power and temperature targets, etc. At the bottom, once you've found the settings you like, you can choose to save it as one of three profiles.
Tumblr media
The latest versions of manufactures overclocking software feature what's called OC Scanner. The software attempts to find a decent overclock. The scanning takes a bit of time however, it doesn't always work. For this card, it actually failed at every attempt but, that's not really surprising considering that OC Scanner fails on most cards I've tested. Auto overclocking, at least in my experience has never worked well. I prefer to tweak individual settings myself.
Tumblr media
Clicking the advanced button on the right side brings up a custom fan curve graph. You can set the fan speeds at a given temperature.
Tumblr media
The gear icon is the application settings as well as a monitor page. You can set up things like autostart with Windows, automatically apply settings at startup, and minimize the application on startup. You will also find help and info pages. The information page gives you specific information on the graphics card currently installed. At stock settings, the Zotac Geforce RTX 2070 mini performed well. The GPU peaked at 1785 MHz with a max temp of 66°c and the fans spinning at 58% of max, this was after 1/2 hour of letting a benchmark loop. At these settings, the card was a bit louder as far as fan noise than the other full-size cards I tested. However, given the small size of the card and the smaller size of the heatsink/fans, this was not unexpected. What was unexpected was the noise level. It was less than I expected. I could hear it on the open bench. It was noticeable but not annoyingly so.
Tumblr media
The maximum stable overclock I was able to get on this GPU was 2010Mhz on the GPU core, 8112 Mhz on the memory. A slight bump in temperature at the 1/2 hour mark from 66° c (stock) to 71°c was recorded. The fans also spun up a bit faster at 62% of max. Again, the results were recorded after a 1/2 hour benchmark run.

With these benchmarks our goal is to do two things: first to show the performance of the card and secondly to make them easy to replicate. With a similarly configured system, you should be able to get similar results to compare your current graphics card against. There will always be a variance from system to system. The game was released on March 27, 2018   Gaming Benchmarks Continued Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a tactical shooter game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective with an optional first-person view for gun aiming. Players play as members of the Delta Company, First Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, also known as “Ghosts”, a fictional elite special operations unit of the United States Army under the Joint Special Operations Command. The game can be played as a single player experience or you can invite up to 3 of your friends to fill out your squad. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is an action role-playing game with first-person shooter and stealth mechanics. Players take the role of Adam Jensen, a man equipped with mechanical cybernetic implants called augmentations. Battlefield V is a first-person shooter video game developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts. Battlefield V is the sixteenth installment in the Battlefield series. Battlefield V features a limited single-player campaign in the form of War Stories, the rest of the missions and adventures are online multiplayer.  For this specific test, I did not have DXR turned on. Raytracing & DLSS Testing At launch, the 20 series GPUs boasted the ability to do real-time raytracing and use a new feature called DLSS or Deep Learning Super Sampling, however, at that time there were no games out that supported either of those features. Without being able to test those features, I think the 20 series got off to a rocky start. Fast forward to Novemberish 2018; Windows 10 1803 update was finally released that enabled the ray tracing libraries in DX12. With that, Nvidia released a new set of drivers and EA/Dice released the 1st patch for BattleField V however, the patch wasn’t without issues and performance was at least halved as compared to non-DXR tests. EA/Dice have now released a new patch that performs quite a bit better. However, there is still a performance penalty for enabling DXR in Battlefield V. For the DXR testing in Battlefield V, I chose to use 1080p as the resolution and the base graphics settings to Ultra. DXR was set to Low, Medium, and Ultra. I also included the results with DXR off as well.
Tumblr media
The different levels of ray tracing start to change the level of detail in the reflections.  I didn’t see much difference on the RTX 2080 Duke between ultra and high and again between low and medium during the benchmark run. The mirror in the image below shows a clear reflection at all levels of DXR, however, the details reflecting in the puddles change quite a bit.

DXR Ultra   Note: Recently Battlefield V and Metro Exodus were released with both DLSS and RTX features available. Another article is coming with our thoughts on DLSS and RTX. The only game to support DLSS at the time of this review is Final Fantasy XV. DLSS leverages Nvidia’s Tensor cores on the RTX 20 series cards. It works by basically rendering at a lower target resolution then, sends the frame to the Tensor Cores and the Deep Learning network to get upscaled and the “AI” fills in the information for the anti-aliasing. DLSS is only available in 4K. For this test, I chose to run the beginning missions around Hammerhead and occasionally heading back to the gas station.
Tumblr media
During gameplay, I didn’t notice too much of a difference. There were some softer parts to the image once DLSS was enabled. As I continue to go through the game, more images will be captured. The Ultra preset settings were used, however, in order to enable or disable DLSS you have to use the custom option.

Final Fantaxy XV DLSS Disabled
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy XV DLSS Enabled To start, no, I did no test DLSS/RTX in Metro or BFV. During the benchmark session, the DLSS patch for BFV had not been released yet. We are currently working on benchmarking both games with RTX and DLSS as well as image quality. The xx70 series is where I get excited. Why? Well, that's because it's where I live. My last 3 personal builds have all been the xx70 series. I play at 1080p and have branched out to 1440. The RTX 2070 does really well at both 1080p and 1440 and reaches above 60 FPS in both resolutions. While my BenQ monitor isn't on the list of G-Sync Compatible monitors, it is A-Sync compatible and doesn't exhibit any issues while gaming on it. At both 1080p and 1440 with G-Sync enabled, gameplay is extremely smooth. With RTX enabled on medium in Battlefield V gameplay was great at 1080p and decent at 1440.

While the Zotac GeForce RTX 2070 mini is small in size, it is large in performance. This is the first RTX 2070 that I've had a chance to get my hands on and it did not disappoint. As expected, it outperformed the older GTX 1080 and 1070TI by a fairly decent margin. As time moves forward so does technology, I expect to see the RTX 2070 to continue to pull away from the GTX 1080. While the performance of the Zotac RTX 2070 mini is good, it doesn't tell the whole story. The mini-series of cards from Zotac is designed to fit into many cases. A small ITX build is very possible with the mini cards and while they are small, their performance in both games and cooling is acceptable. The GPU in its stock form hit a max of 66°c during my testing. Granted the fans spun up a bit higher than other full-size cards. The RTX 2080 FE during the same test had the fans spinning around 45-48% where the Zotac RTX 2070 mini was spinning at 58% or 1680 RPM as reported by GPU-Z. Now there are two versions of Zotac's GeForce RTX 2070 mini, the OC and Non-OC. Our review sample is the Non-OC version. Overclocking the GPU resulted in a GPU speed of 2010 MHz with memory clocking in at 8112 MHz. This resulted in a temperature of 71° with fan speeds of 62% or 1800 RPM as reported by GPU-Z. Currently, the Zotac GeForce RTX 2070 mini (non-OC) retails for $529.99. The RTX series still demand a premium over the last gen cards however, the jump is a bit easier to manage. I really like the mini-series of cards from Zotac. In the past, I've used their GTX 1080 mini and was impressed then. The RTX 2070 mini is equally impressive from both a performance and cooling standpoint. If you want a small form factor gaming rig that performs well at both 1080p and 1440, the RTX 2070 mini may fill the void.         amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "dewaynecarel-20"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links"; amzn_assoc_asins = "B07M8DY3QY"; amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "06bde0fa29d2ad2fa5b01960f3177fce"; Read the full article

Chris Muir can see the roofline of a storage building that houses radioactive powder from his backyard in the west end.
The building is part of a nondescript plant on Lansdowne, north of Dupont, where more than half the uranium pellets that fuel the nuclear reactors are made each year by BWXT Canada.
Muir said he knew the plant was there when he bought his house in 2015, but he is now one of a chorus of community members who are asking the CNSC to deny the application to renew it's licence for 10 years.
He made up his mind at a public meeting CNSC staff held near the end of January in the Davenport riding.
The Toronto plant has never had an accident.  However, the application to renew the licence, which includes public hearings, is one of the first opportunities many residents will have to ask questions after finding out in 2012 that a Star story that the plant - owned by GE-Hitachi until December of 2016 - was making pellets.
The story was the result of activist Zach Ruiter, a freelance journalist and Trent graduate, who knocked on doors to alert residents that the plant existed.
At that time, signs on buildings at the Toronto plant simply said the name - there was no indication that it was a nuclear facility.
The CNSC required GE-Hitachi to have an outreach program, but most members didn't know what the plant manufactured despite its presence in the neighborhood since 1965.
Now, 250 individuals and organizations have registered to intervene either as speakers or in writing during hearings in March, when the commission will hold two-day sessions in Toronto as well as Peterborough, where BWXT owns another plant.
The licence renewal, which CNSC staff have recommended be approved, is for both.
Despite the assurance, Muir said he didn't feel confident after leaving the public meeting.
There were a number of unanswered questions, he said, including what happens if the tank full of flammable hydrogen - the pellets are baked in a furnace filled with hydrogen - catches fire?
The company says it has an internal plan for both sites, with guidelines for emergency staff and plant personnel, which is sent to the CNSC.
And that “each facility has established emergency programs to minimize the risk of fires and other events, as well as robust plans that prescribe the actions to be taken to prevent or minimize potential hazards,” wrote Natalie Cutler, BWXT’s director of communications and government relations, in an email.
Muir also wondered why, with such an increase in public interest, so few residents knew about the CNSC meeting, where commission staff and experts, together with BWXT employees, anti-nuclear activists and politicians seemed to outnumber the 15 or so people from the community.
Kevin Lee, a senior officer, which employs 900 staff, said the commission couldn't afford to notify the public by advertising in newspapers because it was too expensive.
The application is not only generating opposition in Toronto, but in Peterborough because of a provision in the new licence that would allow them to move it's Toronto operation anytime during it's 10-year period to Peterborough.
Activists there say they are tired of dealing with the legacy waste from the GE-Hitachi plant, which used PCBs, asbestos as well as other chemicals at the Peterborough location, although in manufacturing operations that were unrelated to the nuclear division bought by them.
At its height in the 60s, the GE plant employed 6000 people.  Scott co-founded CARN in April after hearing that they might move the pelleting operation.
Scott was referring to an incident where two workers wore the wrong filters 15 times over a two-year period, until 2017, exposing them to airborne beryllium, a toxic metal used to join parts of fuel bundles together.
Julie Dzerowicz, MP for Davenport, said she has consulted a number of people about the pelleting plant on Lansdowne and has not heard any information that makes her think it's a danger.
Canadians typically receive a 1.8 millisievert dose a year of background radiation, which is found naturally in the air and soil.
They said the annual dose from the Toronto plant was 0.0 millisieverts and that epidemiological studies show there are no adverse effects for any dose below 100 millisieverts
Julie said if anyone presents her with evidence that shows she should be concerned for the health and safety of Davenport residents, she “will take urgent action.”
However, Julie was adamant residents in her riding be allowed to ask their own questions and requested the commission hold hearings in her riding, as opposed to the original location - a hotel near Yorkdale where they planned to simulcast proceedings from a physical location.
They complied and the Toronto hearings in March will be held on Dupont, where Julie plans to speak as an intervener.
Those concerns include more transparency regarding test results of air samples and more audits of the plant by the committee.
They do in-stack monitoring every day and according to the website, the sample results are verified by an independent lab.
Soil sampling is done less often because there has been little change in the concentration of uranium over time, said president John MacQuarrie.
Wastewater used in the plant to clean floors and equipment is held in storage tanks and treated to remove as much uranium dioxide as possible before it is released into the sewage system.
According to company reports, from 2014 to 2018 they emitted 46.2 g of uranium dioxide into the air and 3.6 kg into the wastewater, levels that are far below the allowable emissions of 760 g and water emissions of 9,000 kg per year.
Among the experts Julie consulted was Gordon Edwards, president of the Canadian Coalition, who is contributing to a submission by Canadian Environmental Law, which is intervening at the hearing on behalf of CARN.
Gordon is a former professor of math and science at Vanier and has done consulting in the past on nuclear issues for government and industry.
He said studies about the effects of exposure to uranium dioxide have been largely inconclusive, mainly because there are few populations that have been exposed to breathing in the powder.
But he said the plant in Toronto is giving off a small amount of radioactive powder into the air that if inhaled could go deep into lung tissue and radiate a cell so that over time it could develop into cancer.
They say emissions from the facility are about 1% of the regulatory limit and do not cause any impacts to the public or the environment.
A group of scientists who live near the fuel-bundling plant are also worried about beryllium.
In a letter to the Examiner newspaper, they expressed concern that recent testing showed concentrations of beryllium in local samples had increased since 2014.
Answers to whether that will happen, as well as other questions, may have to wait until commission hearings in March.
A spokesperson said in an email that questions about where the escaping UrO goes and what the health effects are will have to wait until then.

Top 7 Foods to Help Fight Depression
While there are hundreds of articles, dietary strategies, government agencies and food manufacturers designed to offer information on how to fight disease and optimize your health, you may be surprised to find that before the featured study, none concentrated on brain health or mental disorders as recently as 2007.1
In September 2018, researchers reported the results of a study focused on finding the best foods to eat to help fight depression. Dr. Laura R. LaChance and a team from the University of Toronto, and Drew Ramsey from the department of psychiatry at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, tackled the initiative. According to the study:
"A systematic literature review was conducted to derive a list of Antidepressant Nutrients from the 34 nutrients known to be essential for humans using level of evidence criteria.
Nutritional data was extracted for a subset of foods with a high content of at least (one) Antidepressant Nutrient using a USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) database. These foods were analyzed for Antidepressant Nutrient density resulting in an Antidepressant Food Score (AFS)."2
The list of antidepressant foods based on the AFS3 is headed by watercress, the plant food with the highest score of 127 percent, with the highest animal-based food being oysters with a score of 56 percent, as you'll see below.
The prevalence of depressive disorders, as well as the potential expense and current state of inadequate management of such conditions, was the driver for developing the AFS. The researchers stressed that each of the top foods can be integrated into any type of eating plan.
You may notice that not all the foods are necessarily familiar to everyone throughout the world; people in the U.S., for example, especially historically, have not found bivalve foods or seafoods readily available, just as people in some areas may not have access to leafy greens or other vegetables.
However, availability doesn't always mean people avail themselves of the easy access to healthy foods; in fact, most of the adult population in the U.S. fails to meet the daily recommendations for vegetable intake. The Healthy People 2010 initiative, designed to increase vegetable consumption and other healthy habits, revealed that only 27.2 percent ate three or more servings per day.4
What Nutrients Fight Depression Best?
The scientists concluded that the top antidepressant nutrientsshould be considered when other researchers design future intervention studies, and by clinicians developing dietary options to help prevent depression. Their top 12 antidepressant nutrients deemed best for such disorders were:
Folate
Iron
Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA)
Magnesium
Potassium
Selenium
Thiamine
Vitamin A
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B12
Vitamin C
Zinc
The Prevalence of Mental Illnesses and a 'Recipe' for Hope
LaChance and Ramsey's study noted that among people aged 15 through 44 years, mental conditions, including depression, are the leading cause of disability worldwide. Increasing treatment options, including by considering “antidepressant” foods, should be “imperative” for dealing with the growing number of people struggling with such issues. Further:
"A growing evidence base, including the first randomized controlled trial, suggests that dietary pattern and food choice may play a role in the treatment and prevention of brain-based disorders, particularly depression … They recommend following a traditional dietary pattern such as the Mediterranean diet … and avoiding processed foods, for example those high in refined carbohydrate or sugar.
Furthermore, an international consortium of mental health and nutrition researchers recently recommended 'nutritional psychiatry' become a routine part of mental health clinical practice."5
The basis for their research was centered, in part, around a meta-analysis6 involving scientists from Australia, Spain, Finland, the U.K. and France. Its aim was to address such disorders through dietary recommendations, along with a randomized controlled trial from 2017, dubbed “SMILES"7 (Supporting the Modification of Lifestyle in Lowered Emotional States).
SMILES, incidentally, involved the collaborative efforts of multiple experts from centers based in neuroscience, psychiatric, dietary, medical and other research centers throughout Australia. It concluded with the premise that "dietary improvement may provide an efficacious and accessible treatment strategy for the management of this highly prevalent mental disorder."8
It also noted that addressing the association between what a person eats and what they don't would very likely impact the number of related deaths. However, the idea for nutritional psychiatry becoming a “routine part of mental health clinical practice” came from LaChance's and Ramsey's use of Lancet Psychiatry's fundamental observation:
"Evidence for nutrition as a crucial factor in the high prevalence and incidence of mental disorders suggests that diet is as important to psychiatry as it is to cardiology, endocrinology and gastroenterology.
Evidence is steadily growing for the relation between dietary quality (and potential nutritional deficiencies) and mental health, and for the select use of nutrient-based supplements to address deficiencies, or as monotherapies or augmentation therapies."9
The Highest-Scoring Plant Foods for Mental Health
One important observation scientists made in the course of the featured study was that deficiencies in long-chained omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, zinc, magnesium and vitamin D are unquestionably implicated in the “pathophysiology” of depression.
More specifically, the impact foods have on inflammation,10 and the influence of dietary fiber on your gut flora,11 are two important factors when looking at the best foods to eat for mental health. One source came from a study focused on the "powerhouse" fruits and vegetables most strongly linked to lowered chronic disease risk.12 That said, the highest scoring plant-based foods for depression are:
Leafy greens - Watercress, spinach, mustard, turnip, chicory and beet greens, Swiss chard, dandelion, collard greens and the herbs cilantro, basil, parsley and kale
Lettuces - Red, green and romaine lettuce
Peppers - Bell, Serrano and jalapeno
Cruciferous vegetables - Cauliflower, kohlrabi, red cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts
Vegetables are highly nutritious, often with an amazing array of phytonutrients that can't be obtained from anything else, but there are downsides, thanks to modern food production.
Case in point: Although it's been labeled a probable carcinogen, glyphosate, one of the most common and problematic pesticides, continues to be used on crops, poisoning many of your foods. Birth defects, infertility, neurological disorders, endocrine disruption and cancer are all listed as potential risks of exposure, according to multiple studies.13
Genetically engineered (GE) growing operations are some of the worst examples of what's being done to your food, and GE crops are commonly sprayed with glyphosate. As a result, an estimated 60 million acres of farmland are now overrun with glyphosate-resistant superweeds, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.14
Based on the USDA's Pesticide Data Program (PDP) Report,15 the Environmental Working Group16 provides annual lists of the "Dirty Dozen," the vegetables and fruits with the highest amounts of pesticide residue (a list that changes slightly year by year) and the "Clean 15," the plant-based foods that are the least likely to contain pesticide residue.
The 2018 list shows spinach as second on the list, and sweet bell peppers as twelfth, but there's a remedy when you're not sure how to deal with vegetables that may be contaminated with pesticides or other harmful chemicals: Scientists report that washing your fruits and veggies in baking soda can get rid of as much as 96 percent of the toxic pesticides that contaminate most fruits and vegetables. Buying organic is also important.
The Highest-Scoring Animal-Based Foods for Mental Health
In regard to eating foods to offset depression, the focus has shifted from studying individual nutrients to evaluating overall dietary patterns. Traditional and whole foods (aka a healthy diet) can definitively be linked to symptoms becoming fewer and further between.
One study,17 among others, notes that people on the so-called "Western" diet, rife with unhealthy fats and sugars, may have a higher risk of depression, attention-deficit disorder18 and other problems.
As an example, an analysis known as the SUN cohort study followed more than 10,000 university students over a four-year period and found that those who stuck closest to the Mediterranean diet model had a more than 30 percent lower risk of developing depression in contrast to those with the lowest adherence to the Mediterranean diet.19
While caribou and whale liver, blackfish, boar, antelope and longan fish were all excluded from the featured study due to the lack of availability, the highest-scoring animal-based food groups include the following foods, followed by possible caveats for your health:
Bivalves (soft-bodied invertebrates in a two-part hinged shell) - Oysters, clams, mussels
Various seafoods - Octopus, crab, tuna, smelt, fish roe (fish eggs), bluefish, wolfish, pollock, lobster, rainbow trout, snail, spot fish, salmon, herring, snapper
Organ meats - Spleen, kidneys, or heart, and poultry giblets
It also should be noted that papaya, lemons and strawberries, each with a score of 31 percent, had higher AFS scores than several of the seafoods, such as snail, salmon, herring and snapper. Fish is considered the ultimate superfood, but be careful when purchasing to make sure it's not on the list of the worst fish, as it's liable to be tainted with heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) and/or radioactive poisons.
There's also rampant issues with concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), which more often than not involve diseases, pollution from excrement, a diet of too much grain and animal byproducts, banned antibiotics and carcinogens, not to mention horrific environments.
Tuna, with a score of 15 to 21 percent on the AFS, is one of the most-consumed seafoods, but it has serious issues for your health due to mercury toxicity. Wild-caught Alaskan salmon is one of the best foods you can eat, but be sure when purchasing that it's not farmed fish, aka "CAFOs of the sea," as it's likely to be toxic due to its diet of GE soy and corn, not to mention mercury and other heavy metals.
Herring are one of the top five healthiest fish. According to NPR, Geoff Shester, California campaign director for the marine protection group Oceanalert, describes it as a "local, sustainable food source," and says, "Herring are delicious, with flaky, mild meat and oil ... ."20 Also, note that smaller fish like sardines, anchovies and herring generally have fewer contaminants and are high in omega-3 fats.
These Seven Real Foods Are Your Best Bet for Fighting Depression
It's very important (not to mention encouraging) that the medical community seems to be grasping the fact that food - not solely medical intervention in the form of drugs and/or psychotherapy - may very possibly be the best hope we have of regaining the mental foothold required, individually and collectively, to both approach and be successful at life. To sum up, the top seven foods to help fight depression are as follows:
Oysters, but avoid those from contaminated waters
Mussels, also be sure they're from unpolluted waters
Seafood, particularly wild-caught Alaskan salmon, herring, sardines and anchovies
Organ meats, but only those from grass fed animals (not CAFO animals)
Leafy greens
Peppers
Cruciferous vegetables
Making it even easier for people to eat good foods without becoming overwhelmed by erroneous dietary restrictions, the researchers of the featured study noted another study from BMJ in 2016.21 It addresses issues with foods that many medical professionals had until recently insisted were "harmful." The old-school narratives on saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium are being overturned based on more recent research.
Moreover, the harmfulness and potential benefit of nutrients such as saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium for both physical and mental health are being reevaluated based on more recent research, and cholesterol is no longer considered a nutrient of concern according to the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
The study authors also observe that mental health professionals may or may not be equipped to support behavioral changes, of which dietary change is simply an example. But the AFS list can be used as a tool, if not by medical personnel to refine their nutritional recommendations for their patients, then by you as a consumer to intelligently refine - or redefine - your nutritional choices.

Bivalves (soft-bodied invertebrates in a two-part hinged shell) — Oysters, clams, mussels
Various seafoods — Octopus, crab, tuna, smelt, fish roe (fish eggs), bluefish, wolfish, pollock, lobster, rainbow trout, snail, spot fish, salmon, herring, snapper
Organ meats — Spleen, kidneys, or heart, and poultry giblets
It also should be noted that papaya, lemons and strawberries, each with a score of 31 percent, had higher AFS scores than several of the seafoods, such as snail, salmon, herring and snapper. Fish is considered the ultimate superfood, but be careful when purchasing to make sure it’s not on the list of the worst fish, as it’s liable to be tainted with heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) and/or radioactive poisons.
There’s also rampant issues with concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), which more often than not involve diseases, pollution from excrement, a diet of too much grain and animal byproducts, banned antibiotics and carcinogens, not to mention horrific environments.
Tuna, with a score of 15 to 21 percent on the AFS, is one of the most-consumed seafoods, but it has serious issues for your health due to mercury toxicity. Wild-caught Alaskan salmon is one of the best foods you can eat, but be sure when purchasing that it’s not farmed fish, aka “CAFOs of the sea,” as it’s likely to be toxic due to its diet of GE soy and corn, not to mention mercury and other heavy metals.
Herring are one of the top five healthiest fish. According to NPR, Geoff Shester, California campaign director for the marine protection group Oceanalert, describes it as a “local, sustainable food source,” and says, “Herring are delicious, with flaky, mild meat and oil … .”20 Also, note that smaller fish like sardines, anchovies and herring generally have fewer contaminants and are high in omega-3 fats.
These Seven Real Foods Are Your Best Bet for Fighting Depression
It’s very important (not to mention encouraging) that the medical community seems to be grasping the fact that food — not solely medical intervention in the form of drugs and/or psychotherapy — may very possibly be the best hope we have of regaining the mental foothold required, individually and collectively, to both approach and be successful at life. To sum up, the top seven foods to help fight depression are as follows:
Oysters, but avoid those from contaminated waters
Mussels, also be sure they’re from unpolluted waters
Seafood, particularly wild-caught Alaskan salmon, herring, sardines and anchovies
Organ meats, but only those from grass fed animals (not CAFO animals)
Leafy greens
Peppers
Cruciferous vegetables
Making it even easier for people to eat good foods without becoming overwhelmed by erroneous dietary restrictions, the researchers of the featured study noted another study from BMJ in 2016.21 It addresses issues with foods that many medical professionals had until recently insisted were “harmful.” The old-school narratives on saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium are being overturned based on more recent research.
But the AFS list can be used as a tool, if not by medical personnel to refine their nutritional recommendations for their patients, then by you as a consumer to intelligently refine — or redefine — your nutritional choices.
