Oooh Relent! I've really fallen in love with him lately (and very unexpectedly, as he was initially meant to be less relevant), so here's a few fun facts about him!
Originally was meant to be red herring for The Onirist's identity. Less than 15 minutes into the chat with the DM (before we had even defined stuff like their ancestry), I fell in love irrevocably and ended up being a member of the polycule

One of my very few (if not the only one I can think of) characters who are directly descended from a divine being. His father, Thunder, is a minor god (And also one of the BBEGs of our game)
His name has a lot of layers. It means the same than his deadname. Relente (in Spanish) means (nocturnal) dew, following his family's weather-names tradition. Relé (the short version) means "Relay", which matches his electrical nature + his techyness. Also "Relent" (in English) does match his overall chill attitude.

Final Project Proposal
A Summary of Your Project
My project is going to be an interactive, visual recreation of a koi pond. It would ultimately be something which is zen and feels somewhat meditative. It would have elements such as moving fish and fading lights around the pond.
Vision Statement, Purpose of Your Project
I initially wanted to make this as a response to my memories of koi ponds specifically throughout my childhood. However, the overarching theme/purpose of the project is simply to create something that feels calming when in the presence of the mini installation. I think koi ponds in general are really calming and meditative, I would like to try and recreate this feeling using slight interactive elements and artistic design. I wonder if a similar feeling can be recreated in a room.
Ideal Audience / Venue I intend for this project (or some version of this project) to be placed in a dark room with a single warm light which shines upon it. I choose warm light, as this is often associated with a more meditative ambience. In terms of audience, I don’t think I am aiming this towards a specific group of people. I think if it’s executed well, it can be enjoyed by a wide range of people.
Background/Concept/Story
I initially started with thinking about something that stood out to me in my childhood memories. For some reason, koi ponds came up a lot - my childhood home had one and I liked to spend most of my time there with my dog at the time. I also realised it was something that brought a lot of peace to the home. This project is important to me because it feels personal and takes me back to that time.
Project Description
The audience would walk into the dark room to see a single project on a black table. As the audience gets closer to the table, the lights around the pond would turn on. As the audience gets even closer, they will see that the fish inside are moving. The fish will move with servo motors that rotate when motion is detected by a PIR motion sensor. The pond itself will be made of multiple different materials -- see drawings. I would love to incorporate sound in this if it's possible as well.
How is Your Project Different?
I haven’t really seen anything super similar before - I tried to research artists and designers who may have done installations which relate, however I didn’t have much luck. I think I was mostly inspired by architectural model-style projects and just added elements of interaction.

^ visual of how the exterior/circumference of the pond will work - 4 (?) laser cut pieces of wood stacked on top of each other. the layers of plastic will be placed between these layers and trimmed to size
^ servo motor is in the middle (have to figure out how to trim the sheet to make it fit perfectly)

Story
Intro
Smart Terrarium is the all in one system that provides the necessary information and automation to encourage a full and happy life for your reptiles. This system provides the user with the ability to monitor a variety of sensors in their animals habitat as well as control the lighting and misting system.
Backstory
This system was designed for my chameleon, Curie. She is a veiled chameleon and loves having her cage always kept in the optimal conditions. She is currently benefiting from the daily scheduled misting routines that the Smart Terrarium provides. This keeps her humidity in the appropriate range while also providing her with a nice place to cool off and get a drink.Another great part of having the Smart Terrarium is peace of mind. You no longer need to randomly check on the status of the mister bucket water level. You can always rely on the Smart Terrarium to notify you when you are running low. Also get notifications when the drain bucket is approaching maximum capacity.The most important part of this setup is the monitoring of the UV light. Chameleons require UV-B to produce Vitamin D. When a chameleon does not absorb enough calcium a chameleon can develop abnormalities in bone growth, rachitis, Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) or just get very weak bones that are prone to breaking. The Smart Terrarium provides constant monitoring of UV light and can notify the user when the average UV index is below a certain threshold.
Hardware
This project uses a Raspberry Pi 3, an Arduino Uno, and a ArduinoMKR1000. The Raspberry Pi acts as our main system receiving readings from the Uno and MKR1000. The Pi also acts as a web server which delivers our app to the client when a user wants to monitor their system. They simply log in to a web page allowing them to interact with the Smart Terrarium from anywhere around the globe.
Raspberry Pi 3 A+
The MKR1000 is the main workhorse for getting sensor data and it sends its readings every second over wifi to the web server running on the Raspberry Pi. It has the following sensors connected to it:

Arduino MKR1000
The Arduino Uno is connected to the
Raspberry Pi via USB. It is used to monitor the water levels and also control the relays for the lights and misting pump. It has the following hardware connected:(2) HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor

Misting Bucket, Misting Pump, Drain Bucket with Proximity Sensor
Software
This system leverages the following open source software:Node.jsJohnny-fiveRethinkDBFirmataVue
Backend
The Raspberry Piis running an Express web server which collects readings from the sensors and saves them to a RethinkDB instance. The readings are being reported to the Pi every second so the user has access to the most current measurements.
The readings are saved every 5 minutes in Rethink DB for historical data.The Uno is running the PingFirmataSketch and using serial to expose the proximity sensors and relays to the Pi using Firmata protocol. The Pi leverages Johnny-five to allow the user to program in javascript.The MKR1000 is running a custom sketch using OneWire for the 5 temperature probes and then using analog inputs for the other sensors.
It posts the values to the Pi every second making sure the readings the user sees are fresh.
Frontend
The Raspberry Pi also serves up the front end portion of this app which leverages Vue.js. It allows the user to log in from anywhere having complete control over their pet's environment. The app works on any modern web browser so you can access it from a computer, tablet, or phone.The Smart Terrarium app allows the user to view the latests readings along with a sparkline graph of the previous day's historical data.The user can click through on any of the sensors
to view their history data.
The Measurements page shows a graph with the entire sensor history. The user can select a section of the bottom graph to display a zoomed in version in the graph above. This allows the user to inspect the historic data for any spikes or dips where the environment is out of the norm.The user has the ability to schedule events including lighting and misting events.
The Event page displays the currently scheduled events and allows the user to add, edit, and delete events. These events are used to automate the lighting and misting sessions which provides peace making sure you never forget.
The Controls page allows the user to manually override the scheduled lighting and misting events. The page displays the current status of each relay and allows the user to toggle them with a click of a button.The Admin page allow the user to enter information about themselves for contact purposes. This is for the email notifications on high/low water levels on misting system as well as notifications for when the daily average UV index gets too low. There is also a spot for the animals birthday so we can provide birthday notifications.

Moon, Cygnus, Asteroid?
Moon: What are you currently studying/hope to study?
I guess I’m studying in three areas right now. I’m a professional programmer, so I am always studying code and computer science. I would like to expand that in my spare time to activities like learning Linux, fiddling with Arduino, and playing around with white hat hacking. I’m working with a few different therapists right now to learn about emotional intelligence and change my way of thinking when it comes to stress. I’m really enjoying learning about how a different perspective can really change the way it feels to take on challenges in life. I would like for emotional intelligence to eventually become one of my core values. I am transitioning from male to female, and that brings with it a host of lessons. I am learning about how the world can look very different from a new perspective. I am learning a lot about who I am, as well as what I am made of. I am learning both about what it’s like to play with my outward appearance, and what it’s like to do so knowing that I may never stop attracting negative attention for it. It’s sort of a combination of a lesson in creativity, a lesson in resilience, and a lesson in determination. I feel like a whole new person in ways I never expected to. I expected my body to change. I expected to feel different. I did not expect to need to become kind of a warrior in my own right. I never needed to be as tough when I was living as a man as I do to live one day as a woman. Cygnus: Favourite weather? I love rain. I guess I mean any rain, but what I really love is hard rain. I love chaotic storms, and peaceful, rainy days where it just rains and rains. Other people get grumpy when it’s grey and rainy out; I walk around with a huge grin plastered all over my face. I even like walking in the rain. I love the way it feels, like the world is full of energy and feeling and chaos. I love the moody atmosphere, the reflections on sidewalks, and the shades of grey in the sky. Somehow, it just feeds my soul. Asteroid: What does your dream life look like? Oh, gosh. Where to begin? Of course, my dream life would be one with no gender dysphoria. I would love to wake up in the morning and know that even though my hair is a disaster and my makeup is smudged under my eyes like I’m cosplaying the Crow, I’ll still be happy with what I see in he mirror. I’d like to be a much more talented computer scientist. I don’t need to be Tony Stark, but I would love to be the kind of person who can just adapt herself to any technology and excel at it instantly. I’d like to be artistic. I don’t have to be amazing at it, but I’d like it to be fun. I’d like to be okay at it. I would like to have a cute little house, maybe even just a town home that I have lovingly and beautifully decorated. I’d like to have neighbors who like me enough to say hi once in a while. I’d love to have friends who really like me for who I am. I’d like to feel a sense of peace inside me. I would like to not fear for my safety. I’d like to have the kind of quiet, peaceful, lazy days I used to have before I developed PTSD. You know, the ones where the world seems to just kind of float by because it’s Saturday and who cares? I’d like to be better at relating to myself and other people. I’d like to do it without suffering. I guess my ideal life would be one spent in peace, making beautiful, useful things and cozy places to share with nice people.

[Gurpreet] fell in love with the peaceful, floaty theme from the Avatar series and bought a kalimba so he could hear it resonate through his fingertips. He soon realized that although it’s nice to play the kalimba, it would be a lot cooler if it played itself. Then he could relax and enjoy the music without wearing out his thumbs.
After doing a bit of experimentation with printing tine-plucking extensions for the servo horns, [Gurpreet] decided to start the design process by mounting the servos on a printed base. The servos are slotted into place by their mounting tabs and secured with hot glue. We think this was a good choice — it’s functional and it looks cool, like a heat sink.
[Gurpreet]’s future plans include more servos to pluck the rest of the tines, and figuring out how feed it MIDI and play it real time. For the demo after the break, [Gurpreet] says he lapel mic’d the kalimba from the back and cut out the servo noise with Audacity, but ultimately wants to figure out how to quiet them directly. He’s going to try lubing the gears and making a sound-dampening enclosure with foam, but if you have any other ideas, let him know down below.
We don’t see too many kalimba projects around here, but here’s one connected to a Teensy-based looper.

Final Project
Koi Pond
For my final project, I decided to work upon one of my previous assignments. My project was inspired by my childhood memories of a koi pond at home; it was where I went to clear my mind or just relax. I wanted to recreate this pond. Initially, I wanted it to be a gallery piece/installation in a dark room where someone would walk in and the fish would start moving and the light would increase in brightness. I aimed to create a zen atmosphere with this piece. The PIR motion sensor would detect motion and trigger the fish to move and the light to turn on.
Process
The first thing I did was laser cut the fish out watercolor paper as well as card. Having both layers would make them more sturdy and less flimsy.


Next, I used watercolor and fine line pens to bring the fish to life.

Next, I started working on the code and the circuit itself. The PIR motion sensor was to detect motion and trigger the servo motor to move at a 60º angle continuously as well as increase the brightness of the lamp. I used an example code to start off (simply using a PIR motion sensor to trigger the servo motor) and then started making adjustments from there.
I had a lot of issues with the circuit itself. I was using the Arduino Nano 33 iot at first and I could not get the servo motor to move or the light to turn on. I thought it was an issue with the code but after checking several times, I assumed it was something wrong with the circuit. I worked on it for a pretty long time and I still couldn't get it to work. Although the sensor was detecting motion, it wouldn't trigger either the motor or the lamp. Then Keru helped me at this point and we tried using the Arduino Nano instead, and the circuit worked perfectly!

I then spent time working on the fabrication, which was probably my favorite part. I loved using the laser cutter to cut out the pond shape and layering each piece of acrylic and bringing the pond to life. Although it was really time consuming, I found it to be really relaxing, which is how I wanted the feeling of this project to be.

I found this whole project to be really joyful and I enjoyed almost every part of it. I loved being able to bring some form of artistic expression in to physical computing and even though the interaction was very minimal, I was still happy with the outcome. It was also great to learn from my classmates as they helped me throughout this process. Whenever I had issues, they would guide me through them (thanks Keru, Peiling and Jeff!!!) It's also been a while since I actually worked on something art/design based, so it was refreshing to bring some of those elements back. I faced many challenges throughout this project, especially with the circuit. I just couldn't figure out what was wrong for a pretty long time which was frustrating. Thankfully, with help, I found solutions for that. I think in general, I also found it challenging to make the motion of the fish to be less robotic - though this is only the first attempt. I think for the future, I could look in to making it smoother, as suggested during the feedback session, and even trying out a dc motor instead. I think this would really help enhance the project and would love to try it out in the future. I might also design it to be geared more towards a piece of art I'd have at home, as it makes perfect sense - wanting this feeling of peace/mindfulness at home after having a busy day. I would love to also try other suggestions that were made, such as randomized movements of the fish (eg speed/direction) which would be a cool addition to the piece.
